Mary Wickes (Now Voyager, White Christmas, The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Music Man)—Mary Wickes was 6 feet of Raccoon energy- actually 5'10", but she delivered comic lines like she had just washed them in the creek for you. It's too bad the cutoff for propoganda is 1970 because as she continued working she leaned further and further into crabby and cantankerous comedy. (M*A*S*H IN 72 was a real turning point for her scrungle capacity)
Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz)—Frank Morgan is known for his illustrious career as grand older men who are also a little funny, including his five different parts in the Wizard of Oz. All five parts are weirdos. This explains him better than I can. [link to blogspot post]
This is round 1 of the contest. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. If you're confused on what a scrungle is, or any of the rules of the contest, click here.

Mary Wickes:
youtube
If you need a woman who is "ordinary yet weird," Mary Wickes was the go-to for Hollywood from about the 30s on. with a crackling wit, a bony stature she made the most of, and just a fun presence for classic movies.
[Mary Wickes is the woman in dark gray. At 1:11 she is the one standing next to Hermione Gingold.]

I really enjoy this photo of Frank Morgan and George Gershwin mixing drinks behind the bar at the Biltmore Hotel, Havana, Cuba, 1935.

love when Dracula Daily is going on and people realize that Dracula is all of his own servants because then I get to remind everyone that Dracula is basically Frank Morgan as the Wizard.

Groucho Marx (Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera)—groucho marx somehow manages to be a romantic lead despite every single one of his characters hating romance, hating leading, hating the shit he's going through, and in general being real soft mad about it. but most iconically, and this is important: he is having the time of his LIFE. also important is that my father's one request for his funeral is that "whatever it is, i'm against it" must be played. groucho marx is a scrungle close to my heart and soul.
Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz)—Frank Morgan is known for his illustrious career as grand older men who are also a little funny, including his five different parts in the Wizard of Oz. All five parts are weirdos. This explains him better than I can. [link to blogspot post]

Groucho Marx:
What is NOT scrungly about him? The painted-on mustache and eyebrows (and the countless cartoon parodies thereof)! The rolling eyes and waggling eyebrows! The truly weird ways he moves his body when walking and dancing! But most of all, the wordplay and sarcasm - possibly no actor has ever made me laugh harder than Groucho.
youtube
look just. please. please. his head is in a jug. and i couldn't find the clip on youtube but this scene ends with him chucking fruit at the villain. THAT'S the crowning moment of heroism: throwing fruit at a man stuck in a door. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS MAN AND HIS SONGS ABOUT GOING TO WAR, AND ALSO BEING AGAINST EVERYTHING.
youtube
Listen, his face is literally the glasses we use as a joke. HIS FACE IS JOKE GLASSES. DO YOU SEE MY VISION??
[cw for fatphobic jokes and an insulting word for little person in the clip below]
