Billy knows your whole thing is being one big tease to him, to other too, but mostly him, and he is close to losing it.

He already had a rough morning after getting barely any sleep. Why, he wasn't sure, but the heaviness in his head was weighing down on his day from the very start. He forgot to pay the innkeeper, borrowing money from Jesse to pay off his room, but now he owed Jesse money. Billy planned on going to the saloon later that day to play poker, but he was dreading it. He knew his tiredness would make it harder for him to play and play well at that. Most of the gang left him alone, seeing the permanent furrow in his brow and the way his shirt wasn't even buttoned right, it was clear it was an off day for him.

But then there was you. You knew he was having a bad day, but you couldn't help it. You always teased him and he always bit back. Not as hard as you would hope, but the game was always a thing. You follow him around that day, having nothing of importance to do for yourself.

He thought it akin to a puppy following you around and every time he turned and saw your smiling face, he'd roll his eyes, his jaw clenching so tight, you were sure he was gonna break his teeth any minute.

"Bonney, do you think I'd look better with your hat?" You run up to catch up to him as he walks.

"No," he replies, his eyes looking anywhere but you.

"Really? Cause I was thinkin'-"

"Can you stop followin' me?" Billy interrupts, his gaze still ahead, so he misses your eye-roll.

"Listen, I have nothin' else to do so I-"

"Well, 'm goin' to take a piss, so I don't think you should follow me," he says, his tone sharp and he looks at you, giving you the quickest, fakest smile he could have. It only brightened your grin.

"Oh, c'mon, I'll just look the other way, I've been around you guys far too long to get weird about that," you tell him, and he seems to know it's the truth, he can’t fight it. He shakes his head. "Leave," and he points back to where his and your horses were.

You're not that easy. Billy knows it too, but he prays to God that you'll see how annoyed he is in this moment and how he wants his time alone. You poke his arm, then jab your elbow at him, "I think I'll stay with you, Bonney."

"I need-"

"I can keep quiet if that's what you really want, but I think it's best if I stick around, what if-"

"Will you just shut up?!" His voice raises, stilling his walking to turn fully towards you. Your eyes are widened a little, but you don't answer his question.

"There's no way in hell you can keep quiet, 'cause all you do is talk. You bother me so much like...," he trails off, then lets out a harsh chuckle, swallowing his words before he spits them out at you, "you're...you're like a pest. I don't get it one bit how anyone likes you. ‘M…’m done with it, I can’t I…you really are a fuckin’ pest.”

His words sink into you. It stings, though you know he's got merit to his words. That you shouldn't have bothered him as much as you were today, that you should have just left when he told you to, but you thought it as much a game as playing poker would be. But Billy is fuming. You can see the anger in his eyes, the way his words rolled harsh on his tongue, the only time you've heard him speak like that was to people the gang was rivaling.

It's hard to stop the tears from welling in your eyes. Your chest burns and you feel the familiar ache in your heart. You try to stop it, but you've never been very good at that. "Pest...okay. 'M sorry, Billy," you say, your voice breaking on his name as your tears start to stream, falling to your cheeks as you sniffle. Once it’s starts, you know you really can’t stop it. You turn your heel and walk away from him. Part of you didn't want him to see that side of you, but it was also too late. Billy's heart drops at the sight. His words echo in his own head, realizing how bad they sound. "Shit, wait," he says, but you keep walking.

Billy's shoulder slump. He's never seen you cry, let alone speak so quietly. He was beginning to think nothing ever upset you until now. He knows he lashed out, but he hopes you at the very least understand why he did. However, to him, he knows he shouldn't have said that. You're a piece of glue for the gang, even he could admit that. Your pure nature was friendly, he knows why people like you so much, but he still said what he said. He thinks about going after you, but he can't. His feet are stuck to the ground as he swallows the lump in his throat.

"Shit," he mumbles to himself, rubbing his hand over his face, pinching at the bridge of his nose.

“Thought you couldna live without me, eh?”

You tackle Soap in a hug, tactical gear and all. "Shut up. Shut up. God, you're alive."

He laughs and returns the embrace. "Too stubborn to die. I thought I told you not to worry about me."

You grip the straps on the back of his vest and keep your face in his chest to hide the tears threatening to track down your cheeks. "You can't just say that and go MIA. They talked about putting your name on a memorial and everything."

"You know me. Always gotta do things my way."

"Your way is stupid."

He chuckles and rubs your back. "Yeah, I'm stupid. I've missed you, though. I haven't stopped thinkin' bout you."

"Really? Cause I..." The dam breaks. You can't stop the flood of hot, angry tears. "I missed you too." Then you start sobbing. God, it's embarrassing. But you refuse to let go of him.

He strokes your hair. "Hen, don't cry. Please. I'm here and I'm not goin' anywhere. I'm your man, aye?"

You shake your head, stubbornly refusing to move.

He rests his cheek on you. "I don't want you to be sad. I'll make it up to you, I promise. I love you."

Hearing him say that just makes your heart skip before the tears come out faster. You love him, too, more than a friend should. How could anyone not fall in love with him? He's Johnny. It's just that you were always too chickenshit to tell him. You thought you lost your chance.

"Come on, look at me."

"No," you mutter, refusing to unbury your face from his shirt. Scared to, maybe. "I don't want you to make it up to me. I want to stay here."

"That's no problem. We can stay here for however long. I just need to know you're not upset at me. I can't stand seein' you sad. Makes me sad."

You sniff. "You deserve it."

"Aye, I do. But what can I do to cheer you up'?"

"Nothing," you mumble into his chest. "I've been crying for two weeks because of you."

You try to collect yourself anyway, wiping your eyes with your sleeve. His squadmates stand a little ways away from the terminal, looking curious at this scene you're causing. This isn't exactly how you wanted to meet them. You're supposed to be Johnny's cool best friend, not a weepy mess.

Johnny recaptures your attention, wiping away a stray tear track with his thumb. "You've been cryin' about me?"

You shove him, but it's light and there's no anger in it. "Of course I have, asshole, you're my best friend. They said you were MIA. Why wouldn't I cry?"

He grins. "But I'm here now, though. Could use a wee bit of comforting myself. You mind?"

You sniff, nodding as you press your sleeves into your eyes one more time to dry them. He's right. He's the one who's been away from home for a month. Probably endured some draconian shit, missing for two weeks and all. But the way he's looking at you through those blue eyes of his... it's not fair how easy it is to fall under his spell again.

"Yeah. I guess. What do you want? More fawning and crying?"

He laughs softly and pulls you into another tight hug. He presses a kiss to your temple, and you have to act like it doesn't make your heart explode into tiny pieces. He rests his chin on the top of your head, content to keep you here, totally enveloped in his frame. "Mm, that'll do. Just to start."

ik what you may be thinkin; that’s only two artists what kinda playlist is this?? but that’s actually intentional. josh is the voice of character a and taylor is the voice of character b (and in my mind they also play the characters). some context: josh’s character is wildly imaginative and quite emotional as well. the story starts w his pov - but he’s a completely unreliable narrator (we all are really and so are these characters). what you can gather from his two songs are that he’s in love w taylor’s character (obvs). but the first impression you get is he’s talkin about someone he’s loved his whole life (which he has) who has died (which is what he feels like). these characters are the ones who’s moms were best friends so they grew up as best friends and as they got older they got closer. they went away to college together fell in love it was beautiful it was comfortable it was happy.

‘promise me’ is character a asking character b to stay with him til death. she refuses. he feels the separation like it’s a death. he wanted them to stay young and stay together and go home to live the rest of their lives just like the beginning. she wants something else.

“We're getting old now (they’ve graduated college it’s time for them to move on to the next chapter)

But I don't feel it (A feels like there’s no question where his life goes next. he’s known his whole life he wanted his life w B he’s always imagined)

only love explores the way he feels in the aftermath and some time following the break up. he’s reflecting on the way he felt during the relationship and the pain he’s in since. we even get a glimpse of how it’s affecting his life as he tries to cope with and mourn the loss of the life he thought he’d have.

gotdamn that hurts.

the slight pause represents time passing and the pov shifting

right where you left me shows how B feels similarly to A after the breakup in that it felt like time stopping, life ending. character B is the storyteller of the two, so we get more details from her pov but it is still filtered through her feelings. in right where you left me, she plays the victim almost - not exactly but she’s also not entirely taking responsibility for it and instead ties it into what’s happened in the time passed. in champagne problems she reveals the depth of the situation and she takes the credit for the “betrayal”. she also reveals some of what has happened since the breakup in these songs, but w midnight rain we get the whole story. past, breakup, post breakup - all of it is revealed.

the last song was added after several listens through the playlist thus far. and while it was revealed the depths of each character’s feelings around the end of everything, it didn’t feel complete. this song is a big song for me personally and so i added it just to try it on and now i can’t imagine this playlist without it.

so the whole story really only takes place at the time of the breakup and the midnights following when the two reflect on the breakup.

so, break up… character A’s midnight breakdown… character B’s midnight heartbreaking storytelling. which took place so far after the fact bc she refused to even process it emotionally until she found out that he really did move on.

i like to imagine that now both characters are happy and grateful for the whole thing. they loved and lived a beautiful life together at the beginning. then they each got what they wanted (after lots of processing and pain, but eventually they get there). perhaps i’ll add more to show that, idk... actually i’ve already got some ideas but i’m really a perfectionist when it comes to these playlists so i need the lyrics and the vibes to flow right otherwise it won’t tell the story right. this is the first playlist tho where the irl singers are consistent with the characters. usually the characters have no gender and any gender in the song (from the singer to the pronouns used) may or may not be relevant. but the characters always have consistent vibes that are represented in the songs. this is becoming one of my favorite creative hobbies actually.

don’t even get me started on whole “what if i took this dagger in me and removed it” because enzo quite literally killed himself to get damon to care

YOU'RE RIGHT!! YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!

The lyrics fit a little too well but honestly, that's the case for a lot of Taylor Swift songs and Denzo. They just go hand in hand, really. I will prepare you, I did just sit for roughly 6 hours going through every single Taylor Swift song and working out which specific lyrics fit Damon and Enzo, so this is a rather lengthy answer to... a question that you didn't even really ask, to be honest. But I hope that you get some enjoyment out of this anyway!

From her first album, we have "Tim McGraw" but only these lyrics below because imagine Damon and Enzo on their murder spree, so it gets a rating of about 2/10 for Denzo vibes

"On backroads at night And I was right there beside him all summer long And then the time we woke up to find that summer gone"

Coming in with some heavier Denzo vibes, we have "Pictures to Burn" which is already off to a good start considering it has burn in the title

"State the obvious, I didn't get my perfect fantasy I realize you love yourself more than you could ever love me So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy"

"There's no time for tears I'm just sitting here planning my revenge"

Tell me that doesn't sound like Enzo. 3/10 because those lines are perfect but none of the other lines really fit.

"I'm Only Me When I'm With You" gets a solid 8/10 because nearly the entire song is just written for Damon and Enzo

"Sometimes we don't say a thing Just listen to the crickets sing Everything I need is right here by my side

And I know everything about you I don't wanna live without you

I'm only up when you're not down Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground It's like no matter what I do Well, you drive me crazy half the time The other half I'm only trying To let you know that what I feel is true And I'm only me when I'm with you"

And on a similiar note of songs just being written for them, "Invisible" is another great example, scoring at a beautiful 7/10 for angsty Enzo point of view and his jealousy of Damon and Elena, ESPECIALLY if his own feelings are unrequited

"A Perfectly Good Heart" also has a similarly angsty feel to it, focusing on the fire of Augustine and scoring it a 5/10

"Maybe I should've seen the signs, should've read the writing on the wall And realized by the distance in your eyes that I would be the one to fall No matter what you say I still can't believe That you would walk away It don't make sense to me but"

ONTO ALBUM 2. FEARLESS.

Only about one verse from "Fearless" fits the Denzo narrative so we're gonna give it a 2/10 because while the verse is good if you imagine it during their murder spree, it takes a bit more imagination than canon

"So baby drive slow 'Til we run out of road in this one horse town I wanna stay right here in this passenger seat You put your eyes on me In this moment now capture it, remember it"

"Love Story" scores a good 5/10 with the focus on them going on their murder spree together (but also the lyrics can fit well with Damon's call to Enzo telling him he'll go to Cape Horn with him)

"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes" Romeo, save me, they're tryna tell me how to feel This love is difficult, but it's real Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes""

"White Horse" again doesn't have much of a denzo vibe unless you're looking at the chorus with angsty unrequited lenses so let's go with maybe a 4/10 or a 5/10

"Maybe I was naive, got lost in your eyes And never really had a chance My mistake, I didn't know to be in love You had to fight to have the upper hand I had so many dreams about you and me Happy endings, now I know

Let's be honest, "You Belong With Me" is kind of hilarious to imagine as a Denzo song but at the same time, part of the chorus does work again for an angsty, jealous Enzo! Gonna give it a 2/10

"If you could see that I'm the one Who understands you" "So, why can't you see? You belong with me"

"Breathe" is like... THEIR song okay. But specifically from Damon's point of view after leaving Enzo in Augustine and then proceeding to spend 50 years with no humanity because he left him. 9/10

To be fair, a lot of "Come in With the Rain" feels like Denzo to me but I can really only pinpoint two lines that actually feel like I could explain WHY, and that's because I imagine it as Damon not wanting to remember or talk about Enzo because it would also mean remembering and talking about Augustine. 1/10 but to me it's higher

"Mine" but specifically this one verse because it reminds me of Damon being infected with the ripper virus and telling Enzo to leave, but Enzo refusing and staying with him even at risk to himself. 2/10

It would be a 2/10 for the whole song but for this verse specifically it's 4/10

"All Too Well" is a painful song in general, but adding a little layer of angst from Enzo's point of view just makes it more painful. 2/10

This part of "How You Get the Girl" just makes me think strongly about both Damon's and Enzo's persistence to stick by the other, no matter what has happened in the past (and even because of the past). 3/10

"This Love" has some haunted Damon vibes but from Enzo's point of view. 6/10

"I Know Places" satisfies the Murder Husbands side of Denzo fairly well, with them on their murder spree but trying to hide at the same time. 7/10

"Wonderland" is kind of perfect for their murder spree actually. Those last two lines also feel kind of Augustine-era because 'Wonderland' could be an interesting metaphor for that. 7/10

"That's When" very much makes me think about when Enzo found out Damon killed Maggie and decided to turn off his humanity rather than hate him. (Aside from the line at the end because that is basically what Enzo asked Damon when they reunited for the first time.) 9/10

Steve asked Heidi out because she was his type - beautiful, kind, outgoing, and had a smile that lit up a room. She was fun, a good escape. Hell, a great escape from the life he was currently living. 

But whenever his eyes met hers, he couldn’t see her. 

She wasn’t alone, of course. Steve courted and slept with a couple of gorgeous and incredible women and each time he looked at them, he found himself in another world where they were a different girl. One girl, in fact. 

“What an incredible game!” Heidi raved. 

Steve listened to her ramble on as the two walked with the crowd out of the Hawkins High School basketball gym. He was enjoying her company. 

Then his eyes wandered and landed on her.

Far across the parking lot was Y/N L/N. He recognized her side profile anywhere. His eyes shifted over to see she was with him. Him, being her boyfriend, Eddie Munson. 

The two began dating a couple months after she and Steve broke up. The two met when she went to pick up Dustin from Hellfire Club the one time Steve couldn't. Dustin swore he tried to keep the two apart, but Eddie was ruthless in courting her and she was too damn charmed by him (according to Dustin). 

Steve wasn’t mad at Dustin. He wasn’t even mad at Eddie or Y/N. He didn’t have the capacity to be mad. 

He watched as Y/N threw her head back laughing as Eddie went on and on. As the long-haired guy talked, her eyes light up in excitement, holding on to his every word. Steve loved that about her. He loved how her eyes radiated joy and excitement when she listened. Eddie moved closer to her, brushed the hair from her face, and kissed her nose before her going for her lips.

Steve remembered how her cheeks would blush when he would do that. He thought it was the cutest thing in the world so he did it as often as he could. It felt like he had the magic touch. 

Now, his powers were stripped. 

“Steve?” 

He turned to see Heidi smiling at him. “Ready to go?” 

He nodded. “Yeah, let’s head out.” 

The car ride was short and Steve tried to enjoy himself, but Y/N lingered in his mind. He looked over occasionally at Heidi hoping to find Y/N there instead. She always loved riding in the car with him.

“Steve, sing with me!” 

“Baby, I’m driving...” 

“C’mon!” 

She turned up the radio dial and screamed along to Foreigner. 

“ I wanna know what love is,” she sang. “I want you to show me!” 

She turned to him, leaning over to where he is. “I wanna feel what love is, I know you can show meeee!” 

She kissed his cheek before sitting back in her seat and rolling down the windows. The wind blew in her as she continued to sing along. 

Steve looked over and smiled, taking a mental photograph he could hold onto for forever.

Dustin and Max took over Family Video the following morning, both Steve and Robin letting the kids do what they had to do as they worked.  

After finding out what had happened with Eddie and Chrissy from Max, Y/N consumed Steve’s mind. While Max’s confirmation that Y/N wasn’t there was a relief, his urge to go to her house and hold her and protect her was becoming too strong to ignore. 

And then Max and Dustin called Y/N and now she was on her way. 

The second he went to turn and announce he was “going on his break”, Robin turned and grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into Keith’s office. “Before she comes in and you go all lovesick puppy on her, I need you to remember that she needs a friend right now. That’s all. A friend.” 

“A friend, yeah,” he agreed.  

Robin exhaled softly. “Steve, I’m serious. I know you’re not-.” 

“I’ve got it,” he cut her off. 

He walked out of the office to find Y/N walking into Family Video. Her eyes were glossed in red, tears pooled in. She trembled and just as Steve went to rush to her, Max pulled her outside. 

He watched as the red-headed teen talked to Y/N, who lowered her head sobbing. 

Steve went to go to her, only to be stopped by Dustin. 

“Not a fucking chance, Harrington,” he said. “First, we need to find Eddie.”

They figured out Eddie was most likely hiding at the residence of his supplier, Reefer Rick. They looked inside the residence, only to find it empty. 

Y/N stayed quiet the entire time, understandably. Every time Steve’s eyes met hers, she looked like a shell of herself. He wanted to hold her, tell her everything would be fine. He wanted to fix it, make it go away. 

But Robin was right. Y/N needed a friend. 

It was then Max spotted a boat house and the group searched in there. 

As Steve stabbed around the place with an oar, Max, Robin, Dustin, and Y/N searched with flashlights. 

“Over here,” Max said, shining a light at desk with crumbled wrappers. “Someone was here.” 

“Maybe he heard us,” Robin suggested. “Got spooked and ran.” “Don’t worry, Steve will get ‘im with his oar,” Dustin remarked, pointing to Steve who was stabbing a tarp. 

“I know you think you’re being funny, Henderson, but considering that nearly everyone in this room has nearly died about a hundred times, I don’t personally find it funny-.”

Just then a figure rose from under the tarp and grabbed a hold of Steve, shoving him to the wall. The flashlights from the group revealed it was Eddie, who was holding Steve by the neck in one hand and a chipped bottle in the other. 

As the group begged for Eddie to stop, one voice that grabbed his attention.

“Eddie!” Y/N screamed. 

Eddie let go of the bottle immediately, running toward Y/N. The two embraced as Y/N sobbed. 

Robin rushed over to Steve. “You ok?” 

“Somewhat,” he exhaled softly.

His eyes stayed on Eddie and Y/N, their emotional reunion making him sick to his stomach. 

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she sobbed. “Why didn’t you come find me?” 

“I wanted to keep you out of this shit,” Eddie sniffled.  “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I’m so, so, so sorry.”

“I know you didn’t do it. I know you wouldn’t have.” 

He grabbed Y/N’s face and pulled her in for a kiss. 

Now Steve was wishing Eddie had just cut him with the bottle.

As Dustin explained to Eddie the upside down, Steve watched as Y/N rubbed Eddie’s back.

She had that magic touch for comfort that Steve yearned for. It felt like being wrapped in velvet. Her touch was an honor that no longer belonged to him. 

Eddie turned to Y/N for final confirmation of what Dustin was saying, she took his hands. 

“You know those nightmares I have?” she said. 

Steve pursed his lips back. He remembered being the one to hold her after she would wake up from those nightmares. 

Eddie’s eyes widened. “That’s what it is?” 

She nodded her head, the tears coming back. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you.” 

He pulled her to him. “Baby, baby, it’s ok.” 

Steve was gonna be sick. He left the boathouse to get some air, only to find Robin had followed him out. 

“Steve-.” 

“I know, Robin! I know what you said, but I can’t do it, alright?” he said. “I can’t. Not now at least.”

He went to the car to cool down.

When he came back, he saw Y/N standing outside the boathouse. 

“Where is everyone?” he asked. 

“They’re in the boathouse,” she said, wiping her nose. “I, um...I told Dustin that I’m gonna stay behind with Eddie. I think it’s for the best.” 

He couldn’t say he was relieved or surprised, but he understood. 

“No, yeah,” he replied, giving a nod. “It’ll be good for you. For both of you.”

He went to go inside when he heard, “Steve?” 

He turned to see Y/N looking at him, a small smile on her lips. He couldn’t remember the last time she gave him a genuine smile. She always gave him a courteous and kind smile, but this one was beyond pleasantries. It was honest and God knew how much Steve missed that. 

“Thank you for helping me,” she said. “I know that was a lot-.” 

“Don’t mention it,” he waved her off. “It was more Dustin than anyone else but-.” 

“No, but I know...with us and whatnot...I really appreciate it.” 

He gave her a small smile back. If he had it his way, he’d run over and kiss her like he used to. He’d kiss her with the same urgency and hunger. 

But it was too late. 

He may have lost the girl, but he’d hold on to the memories forever.

A Prom in S4 Theory & Music Coding Predictions

Some leaked set pics indicate that there MAY BE a junior/senior prom at Hawkins High, which they are calling the "Lover's Ball". It's unclear if this prom will be included on screen, or if it will just be mentioned as an event coming up at Hawkins High because this flyer could just extra set decor. Regardless if the prom happens on screen or not, there will probably be some tension about 'who's asking who' to the prom that we will see in s4. Given that this picture was just leaked a few weeks ago, it probably falls closer to the end of the season sequentially.

Having a big school dance in s4 is suspiciously close to how they had the Snowball scene in s2. This would certainly follow the even/odd season patterns, (and actually add to the list of the patterns), which kind of makes me think we will see this prom on screen, or at the very least it will be mentioned in the course of the season.

The Duffer Brothers love Steven King and reference his work and especially 'IT' a lot in the show, but they haven't done anything with Carrie yet so maybe we will get a Carrie moment this season at the prom...

Carrie was on the video store fridays movie inspiration board for ST4.

At the "Lover's Ball", there will be definitely be some music coding relating to Byler. Since music coding is kind of a key thing in the show, I've been rifling through 80's songs to try and find some that may fit with s4's themes/character storylines (and I may do a seperate post about that later), but for this post I'm just gonna focus on what they might use at the prom for relating to Byler.

Since the season is most likely going to take place in 1986, I only selected songs that had a compatible release year so it would be historically accurate. (these songs would also be great for a byler playlist!)

Some strong contenders for the songs that might play at the prom to reference Mike and Will's relationship could be:

This song is honestly too good of an option for them not to use. I'm reallllyyy crossing my fingers for this one.

This song is on Will's Spotify playlist, and I thought it could also be used at the prom since it's a romantic song. I see it as an 'entrance to the prom' moment song, almost like a 'first look' - like the Mike and El moment at the snowball when she first walks in, but with Mike and Will this time. I think the lyrics clearly hint to this kind of 'first look' moment as well.

This song was originally meant to be included in the snowball scene from s2, but it ultimately was not used and "Every Breath You Take" was used for this scene instead. Since it was intended to be a part of the s2 dance, that's why I think it may be used at the prom this season. (you can read the scripts on 8flix)

——— I forgot to include this explanation originally BUT, I think this song might be used to show some anger/resentment between the two, and to show a decent amount of tension, depending on their development this season. Like maybe Mike is kind of leading Will on in private by continuing to initiate intimate scenes between them, but in public Mike is still trying to put on his “straight boy act” and kind of being a jackass about it, and this song could be used to show the tension between them that has caused.

David Bowie was bisexual. A cover of his song “Heroes” is used in the show twice already, sung by Peter Gabriel. The song plays when they pull Will's fake body out of the water in season one and Mike cries in his Mom's arms, with some very queer-coded lyrics in the background, and after Hopper's letter in s3 (which is very Byler-centric)

I just thought the above songs might be some highly likely possibilities given that they fit the year of the s4 and also make references to not only love, but the idea of hiding, pain, shame, longing, etc., and can make some (partially stretching here) references to other things in the show such as:

RAINBOWS and TRUE COLORS, SHINING THROUGH (rainbows imagery is always associated with Mike & Will in the show and a is symbol of lgbtq+ pride, True Colors shining through = who you really are on the inside finally coming out)

IF THIS WORLD MAKES YOU CRAZY ("crazy together", "only love makes you that crazy" and references the "world" motif in the show)

YOUNGER YEARS, ONLY YOU AND ME, YOUNG, WILD AND FREE (references "not wanting things to change" and wanting "to make things go how they were" part in Hopper's letter, and the "But we're not kids anymore" comment during the Byler fight)

Byler @ Prom Possibilities:

If Mike and Will did dance together at the prom, they will probably get bullied because they live in a small conservative town. They will probably either run out, upset, or Eleven will step in to protect them which could lead to the Carrie moment.

Or Mike and Will will not dance together in the actual dance room, but instead sneak off to somewhere else in the school and have a private Byler dance moment where they can't be teased and it's just them together.

OR Mike and Will are still acting weird at this point in the season because neither of them is communicating what needs to be said out of fear, or one of them has confessed or done something to indicate how they feel, but the other hasn’t so everything is weird between them. There would be lots of tension from this and we would get lots of longing looks and adoring moments between the two of them from the sidelines. (I think this one is the most likely)
