For my English course this year I wrote an essay on the debate of fine art vs contemporary art and I haven't reread it since I sent it in I wanna see if I can find this shit cause I have no clue what I ended up stating as my opinion
#it was crazy how many people i mentioned it to immediately started shitting on contemporary art#like id explain what i meant by fine and contemporary art and the majority of people would instantly talk about how ridiculous#they thought contemporary art was and how it wasnt real art and shit#my english teacher told me i actually changed his mind about the subject and like ultimately all i did was fairly compare the two#i didnt favour either one i gave them both pretty much equal time i think lots of people just havent actually considered contemporary art#at any length before yk they just go well this is art cause its pretty and theyve painted a thing and i know what it is#and this is pretentious bullshit because i dont think its pretty and i cant tell what its supposed to be by looking at it#i went to a modern art museum recently with my family and there wasthis one exhibition that was an indoor garden thing#and they all kinda went whats the point of that its just plants it doesnt even make a picture and moved on pretty fast#but all the plants had little signs next to them explaining what they were and why they were significant and oh my god#it had a kind of motif of the hanging gardens of babylon but it was mostly about war specifically palestine and the effects the war has had#fuck man. i spent a solid hour in there that shit really fucked me up. i love art.#there was another room filled with traditional south american stuff i think it was?#there was this fascinating film and all these coolpaintings and models but there was also a tiny little boom you could read#and it was of mayan love charms and holy shit Tumblr wouldve loved those i think i have a picture of my favourite page#it was like 'i want to join myself to him. i want this man to be my other half'#mmmm. anyway#tag essay#i love love love talking about art i could sit and talk about art for literally hours#wet floor sign

I mean sure, I can understand this perspective, but I'm not sure whether most people feel less shaken to be thrust into conversations about "self-unaliving" than conversations about "suicide"
and I for one as a survivor would much rather unexpectedly encounter somebody talking about "rape" than somebody talking about how funny it is to have sex with somebody when they don't want to, a normal thing that doesn't need to be named because it's So Normal.
which is to say. this is a post about words. the words are not the distressing thing about the discussion. the distressing thing is the distressing thing about the discussion. sugarcoating, dodging or renaming the distressing thing doesn't make it less distressing but it DOES often make it harder to have a frank discussion about it or address it in serious terms.
[pinch of salt: solid probability from their blog that this person is a Literal 14 Year Old and the perspective from 30 and 14 are very different. I do stand by all the points I'm making but I think this conversation lands a lot different for people at different life stages - there is something to be said for the general issue that the internet has flattened social groups to the degree that I as a 30 year old can make a post to my audience of largely adult millennials that immediately enters the same conversational space as people half my age and still in school. that seems. ungreat. as the primary way we engage in conversation. but I don't have solutions to offer.]
you gotta be able to say "die"
you gotta be able to say "suicide"
you gotta be able to talk about "sex"
they're uncomfortable topics, YEAH for SURE
because LIFE is uncomfortable. Death and suicide and sex and pain are straight up going to happen. not having words for the way it discomforts you doesn't make it more comfortable, it just makes you less able to reach out about it.
even more vital, you gotta be able to say words like "rape", "abuse", "queer" or "racist". cause we fought fucking hard to name those experiences. to identify "rape" as distinct from "sex" and "racism" as distinct from "acceptable behaviour" and "queer" as distinct from "invert"
like the function of communication is not to minimise immediate discomfort. we gotta be able to talk about stuff that's hard or sucks or causes difficult conversations.
#red said#i also wholeheartedly disagree with the rest of your post#all entertainment is political. all of it. because politics is the models we use to describe how we interact as a community#and art is inherently communal. so it's inherently political.#that doesn't mean all entertainment has to be a Pure Political Statement. some stuff is just dumb because dumb shit is fun.#but like it's not. detached from the world. and a lack of political intent doesn't mean it's utterly unchallenging.#ok for example. have you ever. enjoyed watching a cheesy 80s zombie movie and it is gory and stupid and great#but then there's a scene where maybe there's a really fucked-up implication about what we as an audience are meant to think#or a rape scene played for light laughs. or whatever your line is.#and they meant it to be fun. you watched it for fun. but you're not having fucking fun any more. there's a bad taste in your mouth.#contrast. sometimes i am reading a nonfiction article for work or something. it is miserable and grim it is about homelessness and dv#but the writer has put it together so well and made their point so clearly you're like YES! YES! THAT'S IT!!!!#and even beyond that like. i am a disabled multiple rape and abuse survivor. i have been through a non zero amount of The Shit.#and a lot of the stuff i find most entertaining and relaxing is stuff that acknowledges that as a Thing Which Happens#like I'm a nerd man. i like video essays about misogyny and fascism and reactionary homophobia.#i like films that make me cry bc they touch an emotional raw spot. i like tiktoks where people joke about their experiences of abuse#i like SFF stories about trauma and survival and sad robots#and yeah you know sometimes i want to watch a comedy panel show or a tiktok of bottles rolling down stairs#but effective entertainment is a conversation! comedy and chill vibes rest on like. deciding what to riff on#and who your anticipated audience is. and nah actually that's not apolitical and also#identifying common human experiences like death or trauma or marginalisation as inherently Political and therefore Unfun#misses the point that like. the question isn't what you acknowledge but how you acknowledge it.#as a rape survivor. for example. i don't necessarily want to open tiktok to a lecture on rape culture.#but i might well stick about for a standup routine about being a survivor of rape#and i will absolutely bounce from a vid where nobody mentions rape bc they think what they're talking about is fine when it's. rapey af.#anyway. this is a sidebar cause even if i agreed about entertainment v politics my main point would still stand#but i very much don't agree and i think you need to maybe look at how you approach entertainment media as neutral#but also i feel very strongly about this and not to harp on the like aS A sUrViVoR thing but#AS A SURVIVOR my fucking LIFE includes ''dark topics'' like suicide and rape. and i don't appreciate how often that's treated as#an unfair imposition to speak about or acknowledge. 'dark shit' is inescapably a major part of my life/self AND I'm funny + entertaining

I AM A GAMER
I am a gamer, not because I don't have a life, but because I choose to have many. I can immerse myself in personas and personalities different from my own, using my imagination to become someone new. I enjoy roleplaying unique characters in various game worlds. The possibilities are endless when your imagination knows no bounds. For the past 20 years, I have played Dungeons and Dragons, assuming the roles of a male Half-orc fighter, an Elven barbarian, a Tiefling rogue, and even an Elven druid reincarnated as a grizzly bear.
Through my gaming journey, I have had the opportunity to meet people I otherwise would not have crossed paths with. When third edition D&D was released, I was introduced to the game and met the man who would eventually become my husband. Additionally, as a fan of games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, I have connected with numerous individuals online, some of whom have become close friends despite living in different countries. These connections have resulted in lasting friendships, with a few members of our current D&D group being friends for two decades. I also had a dear friend I met through gaming who resided in Belgium, but sadly, she passed away from breast cancer. Gaming has positively influenced my life, teaching me valuable skills such as teamwork, which is crucial for survival in an adventuring party. One person going off on their own could potentially lead to the demise of someone else in the party.
Furthermore, being a gamer has honed my critical thinking abilities. Whether it involves solving puzzles or deciphering the villain's nefarious plots, I have learned to analyze problems and devise plausible solutions. Gaming has encouraged me to think outside the box. People unfamiliar with games like D&D may not realize the significant amount of mathematics involved. This hobby has equipped me with an understanding of low to mid-tier algebra.
I find great joy in exploring the rich lore of the games I play. Most of these games feature high fantasy settings with exotic locations and diverse races. The lore often provides historical accounts of the in-game races and detailed descriptions of various places, including maps of the world. It delves into fantastical wonders like magic. Visualizing being surrounded by an ancient forest or exploring a crumbling ruin has expanded my imagination. Gaming has broadened my horizons. I have experienced characters who can run faster than the wind and battles we've named "The Night of a Thousand Kobolds."
What truly captivates me about being a gamer is the games themselves. It all started with arcade games when I was a child, particularly Ms. Pac-Man. Then I ventured into playing Mario on a Nintendo 64. In the late 1990s, when I received my first computer, I delved into PC gaming. I fondly recall playing Final Fantasy VII and a game called Dragonstone. Currently, my favorite PC games are Mass Effect and Skyrim, both of which I have enjoyed for over a decade. However, the best aspect of being a gamer is the camaraderie I share with my fellow gamers. Gathering around a large table with eight other individuals and genuinely having the time of my life is an unparalleled experience.
I am a gamer. I am creative and imaginative. While I don't engage in it frequently, I have discovered a talent for painting miniatures. Although my skill level may not match that of my husband, who has decades of experience, I find it enjoyable and relaxing. In conclusion, being a gamer has brought me new experiences and a great deal of happiness.

Potential DPxDC Prompt
Danny survived high school with his identity intact. It wasn't easy, and it involved "Phantom" making a deal with his parents to help fight the ghosts in return for their amnesty if permanent banishment back to the ghost zone, but no one was getting zapped or gooped or vivisected, so it's all great! Meanwhile Danny Fenton, though his life, has perfected a near universal stain remover that's not just effective even post-washing, but is also environmentally friendly (thanks ghost zone chemists for working even after death on your craft). He decides to submit it to the Wayne Foundation's Innovations of the Future contest for a potential scholarship (Jazz was already teleprompting him from her college in sending out at least ten essays a week for scholarships from other sources). He gets a full ride to the University of Gotham, along with a hefty contract for exclusive rights to his stain remover formula. The issue? Danny knows the product includes a short-lived form of ectoplasm to work, and he is very, very hesitant to allow something as big as Wayne Corp to learn about that. His parents and their zeal caused so much harm just wanting to learn about the Ghost Zone. How dangerous would it be for an Entire Corporation, whose business is to exploit for gain, to learn about it? He didn't think this scholarship application through, did he? Meanwhile Batco is horrified and aghast that a civilian not only sent in something with Lazarus water in it for a fuckin' scholarship, it is actually useful for something besides raising the dead!
