5 min read Indigenous Student Brings Skills, Perspective to NASA Internship Alyssa Warrior, who is Onödowá’ga’(Seneca) and belongs to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, was an intern at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in summer 2023.Credit: NASA/Ellen Bausback On hot, summer days when Alyssa Warrior was growing up, she spent her time outside by her home on the Seneca Nation Cattaraugus Reservation near Buffalo, New York. She lay in the creek to escape the boiling sun, ran through the woods with her sister and five brothers, picked raspberries and wild onions, and lounged in a hammock. When night came, her father started a fire and told scary stories while hot dogs and s’mores sizzled. Her family sunk down in lawn chairs after the fire turned to ash and gazed up, searching for lights in the sky. “Looking at stars was always my favorite thing,” Warrior said. “I think I’ve always been interested in the natural world.” With a blanket wrapped around her, Warrior walked barefoot in the dewy grass, staying out long after her family retreated inside. Other nights, she lay with her face pressed against the sliding glass door in her living room, hoping to catch just one more glimpse of the sky. “I was always like, ‘One more, just one more shooting star,’’ Warrior said. “I just couldn’t stop. I loved to see them.” In summer 2023, Warrior – now a physics senior at the University at Buffalo – interned at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, where she used software to validate and verify a model of a control system that could be used in future hybrid-electric aircraft. Adjusting the model and combing over code for hours to make improvements reminded Warrior of her skywatching memories. “At one point, I needed to stop,” Warrior said. “But I’d be thinking, well, maybe I’ll just make one more adjustment and that’ll help.” Warrior, who is Onödowá’ga’(Seneca) and belongs to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, never expected to come to NASA. But after attending an American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) conference and meeting Glenn engineer Joseph Connolly, she was recruited as an intern. Outreach is integral to bringing more Indigenous people to NASA, says Connolly, who shares Warrior’s Haudenosaunee background and has mentored a handful of other Indigenous interns during his 19 years at Glenn. “I think one of the reasons that it’s really important to get more Indigenous people at NASA, and just people with different perspectives, is because the problems that we work on are ridiculously hard,” Connolly said. “If we have all of the smartest people, but they get trained the exact same way, sometimes you just don’t have the insights that can give you the ability to look at problems in a new way.” Building connections with fellow Indigenous employees is another way to help inspire the next generation, Connolly says, and Warrior connected with many through an online Natives at NASA group. “It’s been really great to see other Native people working here at NASA – people that looks like me or look like my family – because it’s not something I see or that I’m used to,” Warrior said. “Everyone I’ve met has held some sort of information or knowledge that has improved my time here and will improve my future.” Alyssa Warrior (far right) poses with other summer 2023 interns outside a small-scale electrical lab at NASA’s Glenn Research Center.Credit: Joe Connolly Warrior sees a clear connection between Indigenous people and the STEM fields. “I think a lot of Native people specifically are connected with nature and have an interest in learning from it,” she said. “I think that’s its own science.” In addition, working on hybrid-electric aircraft and sustainability aligned with Warrior’s cultural values, she said. “Within Native communities, that is very important,” Warrior said. “It’s not always just trying to go to space, it’s also just trying to improve the planet that we’re on now. “ Besides recruiting and speaking at conferences, NASA Glenn works with Cleveland organizations, like the Lake Erie Native American Council and the Cleveland Metroparks, to support Indigenous Peoples Day events and other gatherings. NASA also supports a high-powered rocket competition for Indigenous students called First Nations Launch. Within the agency, the Science Mission Directorate hosts monthly conversations with Indigenous scholars. “It’s incredibly important to make sure that Alyssa and some of the other students see that these communities exist, because when I was getting started [in STEM], I had no idea they did,” Connolly said. Along with continuing outreach, Warrior suggests that those at NASA and others seeking to connect with Indigenous people learn about Indigenous heritage and history. “Those are all really important things to know before even trying to open your arms up to Native people because then you‘re aware of where they’re coming from and certain struggles that they face,” Warrior said. “That makes it easier to reach out.” Warrior says she is proud to have been an intern at NASA and hopes she’ll inspire younger Indigenous people, like her nieces and nephews, to reach for the stars. She knows she’ll continue to draw on the lessons of the natural world as she pursues a future STEM career. “It’s always with me, this mindset and maybe looking at things a little differently. I feel more comfortable outside, seeing green,” Warrior said. “I think it’s definitely affected who I am today. I’ve got to put my feet in the grass sometimes.” Explore More 4 min read NASA Glenn Helps Military Service Members Transition to Civilian Life Article 5 days ago 4 min read Aviones de movilidad aérea avanzada: un viaje suave en el futuro Article 3 weeks ago 4 min read Submit Your 2024 Event Proposal to NASA Glenn Article 3 weeks ago

The Dog Days of Winter - is That a Thing?
The Dog Days of Winter – is That a Thing?
Are the dog days of winter a thing?
I was out fishing on the Lower Niagara River with Chuck and his bride Sara a few days ago when the concept of the “dog days of winter” popped up. Not even a week earlier, he and I both had strong days in the same spot using the same tactics. That day, however, action was sporadic. Not so slow as to make us lose interest but slow enough for us to start…

The fuiting stalk/berries of Arisaema triphyllum. Books usually call it “Jack in the pulpit”, which is a reference to the spathe (the bit that turns into the berries) inside a pitcher-shaped leaf thing, imagined as a person speaking from inside an enclosed pulpit. . . . In the mountains where i grew up, in Lee county Ky, it’s usually called “Indian turnip”, in reference to its starchy underground corm, which can be sliced thin and allowed to dry and age for about a year before becoming edible. If you eat it before that, it stings your mouth like thousands of needles. . . . In the place where i was born, in Cattaraugus co., Ny, its indigenous name is gë:öshä’ , the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca) language word for cradleboard, again a reference to the spathe/spadix arrangement, this time imagined as a baby inside a baby carrier. . . . There’s a traditional prank involving getting someone to take a bite of this root vegetable. It takes a second before the stinging starts, during which it doesn’t hurt. I tried to pull this prank once, on my little brother @bentleypm , but he just said that it tasted good, sort of like a potato, and took a second bite of it. And then when nothing happened i took it back and took a bite of it myself, thinking maybe this one somehow didn’t have any sting to it. And then a second later the stinging hit and i was trying to spit it out and rinse my mouth with creek water. He just stood there completely straight-faced, and said “what? What’s wrong?”. He later went on to earn some advanced degrees in theater. . . . . . #herbs #herbalmedicine #plants #plantmedicine #wildedibles #poisonousplants #nativeplants (at Lexington, Kentucky) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrROeKpBRxH/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bfzqfwdpk195

I went looking for more info on this woman, and there was a fair amount to be found!
born in Salamanca, NY in 1892, to Jacob and Eliza Jamison, she also went by Goldie Jamison (Conklin, after her c. 1912 marriage to Charles Conklin). she seems to have lived on the Alleghany Reservation until her death in 1974, at one point running a small farm in Silver Creek, NY with her husband
this image and many others were part of a modeling job she took for Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. of Little Valley, NY; they were used on postcards to sell a line of inexplicably Indigenous-themed knives the company produced. door-to-door knife salesmen would use the postcards as calling cards for prospective customers, sometimes offering larger copies of the photo in question as a freebie with every order. the phrasing used in describing the photos was...Not Sensitive, to say the least
source, with some reminiscences from Conklin’s grandson

Winter Fishing in Buffalo Niagara – 20171218 - 20171225
Winter Fishing in Buffalo Niagara – 20171218 – 20171225
Winter Fishing in Buffalo Niagara – 20171218 – 20171225
Winter fishing in Buffalo Niagara can be magical. Right now, as I type this, there are thousands of steelhead and brown trout in the lower river and great lake tributaries throughout the region. While cold weather keeps many anglers and would-be anglers inside, those that avoid the shack nasties will capitalize on relatively unpressured…

Joe Nichols Announces New Music
Joe Nichols released new music this week and announced that his first album in almost four years will be available July 28. Never Gets Old will be released via BBR Music Group/Red Bow Records and will feature 12 tracks that a press release described as having "a traditional, timeless, country sound."
Songwriters featured on the record include Chris Stapleton, Zach Crowell and Shane Minor. The title track was written by Steve Moakler and Connie Harrington.
youtube
The first single off the project, "Never Gets Old," is a mid-tempo track featuring Nichols’ smooth baritone voice combined with a simple guitar picking melody. While viewed as a more traditional country singer, Nichols had radio success with "Yeah" and "Sunny and 75," as both pop-infused country songs made their way all the way to the top of the charts.
"Never Gets Old" does not stray from his time honored twang. The track is a love song that gives insight into how sometimes the same old experiences are the glue that holds a relationship together:
"Sometimes it feels like a broken record but baby you never do / never gets old, watching you laugh / feeling your kiss, kissing me back / I never get tired, tired of that / no it never gets old / it never gets old holding your hand / gonna stay young being your man loving you over over again no it never gets old."
Artist: Joe Nichols. Photo: Joseph Llanes
Fans of Nichols will appreciate the singer going back to the roots of his first album. When describing his latest record, the country singer said, “I tried to round this album out with what my first album was like — traditional country, what got me started, what I love, what I’m passionate about, I think it finished out well. I’m really proud of how country the label allowed me to be.”

Excerpt:
New York State blocked the Northern Access Project on April 7, a pipeline that would have carried fracked gas from Pennsylvania to Canada via New York. This is a huge victory not just for New Yorkers but for the entire planet.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), after a careful and exhaustive study, exercised its right under Section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act to deny certification to the proposed 24-inch diameter, 99-mile pipeline. Without 401 certification, the natural gas pipeline cannot go forward within the state.
Gov. Cuomo and DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos have shown exceptional leadership in denying the permit. This project was a serious threat to water quality, wildlife, trout streams and other habitats, as well as to air quality in the North Country and Western New York. The pipeline would have directly harmed 192 streams, 600 acres of forests and more than 17 acres of wetlands in the state and would have crossed one sole source aquifer—the Cattaraugus Creek Basin Aquifer System—the sole source of drinking water for 20,000 residents in Cattaraugus, Erie and Wyoming counties in New York.

Fishing Buffalo Niagara - Fall 2017 Update
Fishing Buffalo Niagara – Fall 2017 Update
Fishing Buffalo Niagara 2017-10-11
Fishing Buffalo Niagara Fishing this fall has been excellent. From salmon to smallmouth bass to steelhead to musky – choosing what to fish for is a tough call. We’ve been focused mainly on salmon and musky lately. Although our love for smalljaws is powerful, it’s nice for us to give them a break for a bit. Both for our sake and for the benefit of the fish.…
