I'm seeing The Jellicle Ball at PAC NYC tonight! Currently waiting in the lobby lounge and if I might say, this venue is swanky! I bought a fan at the merch table and a glass of rosé at concessions. My ticket is right up against the stage, at one of the cabaret tables. I'll reblog this post with more thoughts once I'm in my seat and again after the show!

colorful cats nonrep redesign -- some info under the cut

i finally pulled together my two-year-old colorful designs--and filled in the rest of the cast--so i can finally share!

it's a bit underbaked: i don't have a setting in mind, other than perhaps a colorfully painted junkyard, but color in general would be very, very prominent in the show--with grizabella having lost all her color except for her one final pink heart, and macavity's fight sequence ideally being illuminated only by a set of sodium lamps--causing the entire stage to appear monochromatic--taking color away from all the other cats until mister mistoffelees returns it in his number.

overall the main point was to introduce bright or unnatural colors to all the cats; I really liked how mexico '18 included a bit of pink and a few bright colors in their designs, so I wanted to go a lot further with that, and use the london costume style

later on i would like to expand on the designs since i obv used the same silhouette for everyone when there SHOULD be some variation in the wig shapes and shoulder-fluffies placement, etc, but i definitely didn't have the time or energy for that this time around lol

note: the 'chorus' cats are all my pre-existing ocs except for tabbyswing!

hi i know you had posted about perth cats back way back in march but i was wondering if you knew anything more about the production? i’ve went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out who is what cat and who plays who using your list as a base to go off of and several hours and a good little stockpile of images later i still haven’t found anything more.

what i have found though is jemima’s actor’s full name is charlotte louise, victoria’s actor was an actor called avie grey (though i don’t know what cat is victoria) and other actors of unnamed cats include: lisa williams, tori brown, ella tweedle, rebekah wilson, lavina monk, caitlin atherton, jordy andrews and jaxon coke (all found through tagged images and birthdays posts by platinum productions on facebook) i can provide images of each of these unnamed actors so there is a cat face to attach to them just not any names still - @themagicoolcat

Not weird! I haven't looked much into Perth lately but I took another peek around with the names you listed. I didn't find much (but I did stumble upon some of those birthday posts you mentioned, I don't know how I didn't find them the first time).

It looks like Avie Grey played the clown cat, so if she's Victoria that means Vicky is the clown?

Plus Tori Brown would then be straight-haired pink cat, but I didn't see any names for that character.

I did find some of costume pictures of Sooz Bennet/Bennett? who plays Skimble, so based off of my (poor) sense of facial recognition, I think the orange long-haired one is Skimble

Only other thing I really came up with is that I think (think) Tara Lynette Elliot mightve been on the production. Specifically and only bc she's been employed by the same company for other musicals + she looks a hell of a lot like the half pink-half orange jacket cat, which could mean nothing but I'm choosing to believe.

Given that it seems like none of the ensemble characters have ever had their names posted (by official or cast accounts) I honestly wonder if theyre just not named characters. Notably this cast skews heavily female, and quite a few of the usual Cats ensemble characters are male. So it's very possible that they just weren't named if their role wasn't 1-1 to some replica character's role (Demeter, Bomba, Victoria, etc).

I feel like the cast members would say something in the caption alongside a picture of their role ('had fun playing Alonzo in Cats this year!' or whatever) if they did have names and yet I have yet to come across anything of the like. Which is the lame disappointing answer unfortunately, but this production wouldnt be the only nonrep (or rep honestly) with a handful of unnamed ensemble or swing characters.

his name is periwink hes my baby. he thinks he is an AMAZING painter (he is not). uuhh shortly after making him i found another Painter cats oc but 😵‍💫 i promise i wasnt trying to copy them. i just happen to paint and own six cats (horrible mix) and that was my inspo. anyway this guys name was almost canary but i went with periwink because periwinkle is my favorite color:D! i have a post about him somewhere around here on this blog

My disorganized two cents about PAC NYC Cats being humans:

I think the more divorced from the original cat context the nonrep is the funnier it is that they talk about everything from an explicitly cat perspective. Like "yeah that extremely debaucherous sexy human person rum tum tugger gets stuck in drawers and chases rats and mice. And we all want him carnally for it"

It's different and that's good!!!!!!!! If you're gonna deviate from the og production I love to see folks doing something VASTLY different and transformative. Like 90% of nonreps still play them as cats. It's fun to see them as not-cats imo.

Like I'm not gonna go to a nonrep wanting to see the normal dynamics and characterization. If I wanted them to be the same I'd watch 1998 again, give me all the recharacterizarions and reimaginings. Scrap Munk as a character and invent a new one that has a different deal.

Excited to see how certain characters are re-characterized or scrapped or invented?? Like strictly the only characters they gotta to keep are the ones that have their own songs for the most part. And those song characters may be interpreted VASTLY different as to how they're usually portrayed and I for one am pumped to see new shit

I get the thought of like "if you're gonna make it so different then why even do cats at all" but like. I think given the fact that Cats the Musical took the very basic and simple collection of Old Possum's poems and radically recontextualized them into the musical we all know and love, I think its actually very much in the spirit of Cats to take something's base form and give it a complete makeover

Like "ALW if you wanted to do a hypersexual dance show then why did you base it on children's poems?" well because wouldn't that be just a fun thing to pull off?

i wanted the kittens to be furby babies for obvious reasons. they are so small

the adults are standard furbies and all the song cats (minus the OLLDDDD elders) are special edition/prize furbies

aforementioned elders are 2005 furbies. i love those things

i chose mostly off vibes. colors, cool features, names, gimmicks that matched--some are closer to their replica costumes and others are just. my desire for batshit colorful nonrep designs

I was watching a video about the "punctual whenever", a linguistic phenomenon in which people use the word "whenever" to refer to a single, nonrepeated point in time. For example, "Whenever I was at the gas station the other day, I say Eliza". As somebody from southeast Ohio, I heard this a lot growing up and it always drove me crazy. I thought it was bad grammar. But, of course, it's not. It's just a dialectical feature that's existed in the English language since the 17th century.

Looking into this a bit more, it's listed as a feature of the "West Pennsylvania English" dialect, which makes sense, because east Ohio is basically the same as west Pennsylvania. But, to my surprise, there was something listed on there as an unusual feature that I assumed everybody did. Apparently, statements like "the cat wants petted" and "the dinner needs made" aren't the norm! The more common ways to say these would be "the cat wants to be petted", or "the dinner needs making". I don't dispute that those are ways you can say those, I just never would have thought that the local variant here wouldn't be the norm

happy birthday to jemima <3 (atleast my birthday hc for her). i wanted to post something for her today, considering she’s my favorite, so here are some of my favorite jemima/sillabub designs!

first, the london design. it’s the most known and fits my girl the best <3 i love the red details sm (especially bc it makes her look like bombas kitten) and it’s just so nice visually.

next, gothernburg jemima. im not a big fan of nonreps, but i think gothenburg jem is adorable. this is kinda funny to say about CATS the musical, but she kinda reminds me of a puppy in gothenburg.

finishing off with a sillabub, I adore hamburg sillabub <3. her makeup especially is adorable, and she’s become the picture in my mind for when i think of sillabub.

So like big question how are you gonna handle grizabella on ur cat ballet au/nonrep?

I have her inspiration as the sugar plum fairy for reasons I cannot recall (made the pinterest board a while ago) so I might make a sort of tattered/old ballet costume like with pointe shoes that look dead? I'm not entirely sure what my stratergy is but we'll see if I manage it lmao
