CATL Unveils TENER: Zero-Degradation Energy Storage Breakthrough
CATL Introduces TENER: World's First Five-Year Zero-Degradation Energy Storage System with 6.25MWh Capacity
On April 9th, CATL revealed TENER, the world's inaugural mass-producible energy storage system boasting zero degradation within its initial five years of operation, in Beijing, China. With comprehensive safety features, a five-year lifespan free of degradation, and a robust 6.25MWh capacity, TENER is poised to accelerate the widespread adoption of new energy storage technologies and propel the sector toward higher quality standards.
Pioneering Mass-Production of Zero-Degradation Systems
While maintaining capacity over the first five years of use marks a significant leap forward in battery lifespan extension, ensuring zero degradation of power is equally crucial for energy storage power plants seeking to align with the demands of emerging electric power systems. By harnessing biomimetic SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) and self-assembled electrolyte technologies, TENER has overcome barriers to lithium ion movement, achieving zero degradation in both power and capacity. This guarantees consistent auxiliary power consumption levels throughout its entire lifecycle, effectively creating an "ageless" energy storage solution.
Empowered by state-of-the-art technologies and advanced manufacturing capabilities, CATL has addressed challenges posed by highly reactive lithium metals in zero-degradation batteries, thereby mitigating thermal runaway risks stemming from oxidation reactions.
Unmatched Energy Density in a Compact Form: 20-foot Container housing 6.25MWh Capacity
TENER boasts an impressive 6.25MWh capacity within a TEU container, marking a 30% increase in energy density per unit area and a 20% reduction in overall station footprint. This innovative design enhances energy density and efficiency within limited spatial constraints.
CATL's cutting-edge cell technology underpins the system's outstanding performance. TENER is equipped with long-lasting, zero-degradation cells tailored for energy storage applications, achieving an impressive energy density of 430 Wh/L, a significant milestone for LFP batteries used in energy storage.
Dedicated Quality Management for Ultimate Safety
In pursuit of ultimate safety in energy storage, CATL has established an end-to-end quality management system encompassing technology development, proof testing, operation monitoring, and safety failure analysis. Tailored safety goals are set for different scenarios, with corresponding safety technologies developed to meet these objectives. To validate these technologies, CATL has created a validation platform simulating safety tests for energy storage systems across various power grid scenarios. Post-deployment, CATL continuously monitors system operation via AI-powered risk monitoring and intelligent early warning systems, calculating product failure rates throughout their lifecycle to refine safety design goals.
CATL has reduced cell failure rates to parts per billion levels for TENER, translating to lower operating costs and significantly enhanced internal rates of return when extended over the system's full lifecycle.
Energy storage plays a pivotal role in the green energy transition, and CATL is committed to delivering world-class solutions to customers globally. The introduction of TENER marks another milestone in CATL's ongoing commitment to energy transition. Looking ahead, CATL will continue its dedication to open innovation, collaborating with industry partners worldwide to lead the charge in innovation and advanced technology.

CATL said at the event that the Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery is capable of adding 248 miles (400 km) in 10 minutes. The new battery achieved fast-charging over a wide temperature range. According to CATL, it can still charge 0 to 80% in 30 mins, even in temperatures as low as -10℃ (14℉). In addition to fast-charging, CATLs new LFP battery can deliver over 434 miles (700km) range on a single charge.
Mass production is expected by the end of the year with new EVs equipped with the fast-charging battery available on the market in the first quarter of 2024(..)!!!
P.S. If the named numbers are correct, then this is a new step forward in the development of LFP battery technology. CATL is able to produce LFP batteries cheaply in large volumes. This means that the experts hired by "big oil" greatly underestimate the pace of introduction of affordable long-range electric cars equipped with LFP batteries.

⚡ - Charging Towards a More Electrifying Future
1. The Kissimmee River has been brought back to life—and wildlife is thriving
The Kissimmee River in Florida was straightened in the 1960s, causing a sharp decline in wildlife and ecological problems. But in the 1990s, a $1 billion restoration project was initiated to restore the river's natural state.
Today, nearly half of the river has been restored, wetlands have been reestablished and rehydrated, and wildlife has returned, including rare and threatened species. Already the biological impact of the project has become clear. As the wetlands have come back, so have the birds.
2. Plastic wrap made from seaweed withstands heat and is compostable
A cling film made from an invasive seaweed can withstand high temperatures yet is still easily compostable. The material could eventually become a sustainable choice for food packaging.
Scientists started with a brown seaweed called sargassum. Sargassum contains long, chain-like molecules similar to those that make up conventional plastic, which made it a good raw material. The researchers mixed it with some acids and salts to get a solution full of these molecules, then blended in chemicals that thickened it and made it more flexible and pliable.
3. An Eagle Who Adopted a Rock Becomes a Real Dad to Orphaned Eaglet
Murphy, a bald eagle that had been showing fatherly instincts, has been sharing an enclosure with an eaglet that survived a fall from a tree during a storm in Ste. Genevieve. Murphy, his rock gone by then, took his role as foster parent seriously. He soon began responding to the chick’s peeps, and protecting it.
And when, as a test, the keepers placed two plates of food in front of the birds — one containing food cut into pieces that the chick could eat by itself, and another with a whole fish that only Murphy could handle — the older bird tore up the fish and fed it to the eaglet.
4. World's largest battery maker announces major breakthrough in energy density
In one of the most significant battery breakthroughs in recent years, the world’s largest battery manufacturer CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg which it says will go into mass production this year.
“The launch of condensed batteries will usher in an era of universal electrification of sea, land and air transportation, open up more possibilities of the development of the industry, and promote the achieving of the global carbon neutrality goals at an earlier date,” the company said in a presentation at Auto Shanghai on Thursday.
This could be huge. Electric jets and cargo ships become very possible at this point.
5. Cat with '100% fatal' feline coronavirus saved by human Covid-19 medicine
A beloved household cat has made an “astonishing” recovery from a usually fatal illness, thanks to a drug made to treat Covid-19 in humans – and a quick-thinking vet.
Anya, the 7-year-old birman cat, was suffering from feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a “100% fatal” viral infection caused by feline coronavirus. That was, until Auckland vet Dr Habin Choi intervened, giving Anya an antiviral used to treat Covid-19 called molnupiravir.
6. Kelp forests capture nearly 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually
Kelp forests provide an estimated value of $500 billion to the world and capture 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from seawater each year. Most of kelp’s economic benefits come from creating habitat for fish and by sequestering nitrogen and phosphorus.
7. Medical Marijuana Improved Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms in 87% of Patients
Medical cannabis (MC) has recently garnered interest as a potential treatment for neurologic diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). 87% of patients were noted to exhibit an improvement in any PD symptom after starting medical cannabis. Symptoms with the highest incidence of improvement included cramping/dystonia, pain, spasticity, lack of appetite, dyskinesia, and tremor.

China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market.
Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing’s priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China’s annual parliamentary meetings.
One of those reports, from the Ministry of Finance, said the central government would allocate 10.4 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) “to rebuild industrial foundations and promote high-quality development of the manufacturing sector.”
While that’s down from the 13.3 billion yuan earmarked for the same category last year, the sector overall gained greater prominence. In 2023, plans to spend on industrial development came second to support for consumption.
“Unlike other economies that went through a wrenching adjustment in their housing market, China’s investment rate isn’t falling,” HSBC’s chief Asia economist Frederic Neumann and a team said in a report Friday. “Instead, [capital expenditure] is shifting towards infrastructure and, importantly, manufacturing.”[...]
Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers’ high reliance on debt for growth. Property sales have since plunged while developers have run out of money to finish many projects, cutting into what was once about 25% of China’s GDP when including related sectors such as construction.[...]
Despite widespread attention on whether Beijing would bail out the property sector, real estate got no mention in the finance ministry’s spending plans, and limited attention in a ministry-level press conference about the economy during the parliamentary meetings. Instead, the housing minister was included in the lineup for a press conference about people’s livelihoods.
“Supporting the modernization of the industrial system” came first in the finance ministry’s report, followed by “supporting the implementation of the strategy of invigorating China through science and education.”
Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. Amid high youth unemployment, especially for university graduates, electric car company BYD and battery maker CATL are among those working with vocational schools to train staff for their expanding workforce.[...]
The report from the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planner, reiterated government plans to support some developers’ financing needs — under the eighth item on the priority list that called for preventing financial risks. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

China will improve home sales in a "forceful" and "orderly" way, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong said on Saturday (Mar 9), as weak demand in the country's beleaguered residential property market persists.[...]
Some developers should be allowed to go bankrupt or restructured according to legal and market-based rules, Ni said told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of parliament in Beijing.
Premier Li Qiang said this week that China will quicken the development of "a new model" for the troubled sector, focussing on building more affordable housing and meeting demand for homes.
But China will insist that "housing is for living in, not for speculation" when formulating a new development model for the sector, Ni said, reiterating an official line against property speculation.
