For ficlet friday - Henry Tilney telling Catherine ghost stories, maybe shortly after they're married would be so cute
Thanks for the ask! Great idea!
Ficlet Friday: newlywed ghost stories
"Now that you are mistress of Woodston, I can no longer hide its greatest secret from you, Catherine," Henry said in a grave tone.
Catherine moved closer to him in the bed. "Oh! What is that?"
"Did you not notice the old garden shed when I first took you about the grounds?"
"Yes."
"And yet I have never shown you inside it."
"Surely that is just because it is an ordinary shed, nothing of importance."
He shook his head against his pillow, still wearing the same grave expression. "No. It is because it is haunted."
"Haunted! Oh no, that cannot be true."
"It is quite haunted," he insisted. "The spirit of the old, murdered gardener lurks within its rotting walls."
"Oh! How frightful!" She shuddered against the sheets, and he threw an arm over her waist to draw her closer against him. "Well, and what if I was to go inside?"
"You would take a lamp with you, creeping slowly through the creaking old door, but as soon as you were inside, the door would slam itself shut"—he threw the blanket over both of their heads—"and your lamp would snuff out, as if an invisible hand had extinguished it, plunging you into complete darkness."
Catherine trembled within the dark cocoon her husband had put them in, reveling in his horrid tale.
"You would try to pry the door open, but find yourself utterly trapped—but not alone. No, the hairs on the back of your neck"—he stroked his fingertips there, making her shiver—"would rise as a cold presence made itself felt in the dank air behind you."
"Oh! Henry! This is too horrid!" She snuggled against him. "What then?"

Reign challenge (XIII) –  Funniest scene
[Caption: Catherine and Henry are kneeling down the floor trying to clean blood andcover the death Henry caused. She complains that it’s leaving a stain, and Henry asks why is it so difficult and rambles about how their clothes “go away dirty and come back clean, wondering how the servants doing it. Catherine replies that she doesn’t know, that they “dip them in something”. Once done Catherine tells him to pick up “the solid bits” to try and make the stain look like spilled wine, and she starts covering the girl’s corpse with a rug, telling Henry to help her with rolling it forward “the way [her] chefs do stuffed pastry”. Catherine states the plan to get the girl to her original chambers and make her fall from them. Then, she complains that the rug in the room was her favourite coverlet, and Henry tells her to add it to the list of his debts to her.]

I wake up from 12 hours of sleep (thanks, going-on-9-day stomach bug, really🙄) to see that baby boy is a pick to be the next James Bond.
Tumblr media
Here I had it backwards in thinking that Daniel Craig should play Arthur in flashbacks with Rachel Weisz playing Catherine and they clearly don't know that he's a man of infinite hobbies ... except going out in public.

I will forever be sad we don't have the actual dialogue of his proposal, but still 💕
Tumblr media
Northanger Abbey Readthrough Ch 30
Despite having ten whole children, Mrs. Morland notices that Catherine is acting oddly and is concerned about it. She waits a few days before talking to Catherine, which honestly sounds very wise, kudos to her. Then she gets it into her head that the high life at Northanger Abbey has ruined Catherine for home. She's wrong of course, but she is trying her best. How often do parents understand their kids anyway?
I think Jane Austen gets a kick out of bringing in a hero, unlooked for, mid paragraph. It happens here with Henry Tilney, who shows up during Mrs. Morland's search for an essay, it happens with Mr. Darcy turning from the stables at Pemberley, and with Captain Wentworth's arrival in Bath!
I just love this so much:
He was not ill-inclined to obey this request, for, though his heart was greatly relieved by such unlooked-for mildness, it was not just at that moment in his power to say anything to the purpose. Returning in silence to his seat, therefore, he remained for some minutes most civilly answering all Mrs. Morland’s common remarks about the weather and roads. Catherine meanwhile—the anxious, agitated, happy, feverish Catherine—said not a word; but her glowing cheek and brightened eye made her mother trust that this good-natured visit would at least set her heart at ease for a time, and gladly therefore did she lay aside the first volume of The Mirror for a future hour.
Henry can't talk, Catherine is just sitting there all heart eyes. It's so cute! It's so real! I love it so much. I can't even.
Mrs. Morland runs out of things to talk about and Henry finally lightbulb-moments his way into a walk to the Allens. Which Sarah ALMOST RUINS! Thank you, Sarah. Oblivious younger siblings remain a timeless problem. But Mrs. Morland luckily catches on and sends them on their little solitary walk. Mrs. Morland's "silencing nod" seems to be much more effective than Mrs. Bennet's winks at Kitty, by the way.
Such a short proposal description, but it's so lovely:
Some explanation on his father’s account he had to give; but his first purpose was to explain himself, and before they reached Mr. Allen’s grounds he had done it so well that Catherine did not think it could ever be repeated too often. She was assured of his affection; and that heart in return was solicited, which, perhaps, they pretty equally knew was already entirely his own
Now, a lot of people hate this:
I must confess that his affection originated in nothing better than gratitude, or, in other words, that a persuasion of her partiality for him had been the only cause of giving her a serious thought. It is a new circumstance in romance, I acknowledge, and dreadfully derogatory of an heroine’s dignity; but if it be as new in common life, the credit of a wild imagination will at least be all my own.
I have already talked about why a girl liking a boy first is bad (stupid notions of female modesty basically), but I don't understand why people dislike this so much. Yes, it wasn't love at first sight, but there is nothing wrong with liking someone because they like you first! That is literally what happened with Elizabeth Bennet! And it's not like that is the only reason Henry proposed, he realized that she is awesome! It was the regard for him that made him take notice, but that isn't why he defied his father, rode over, and proposed.
I love this, what did the Allens think of them? A very short visit to Mrs. Allen, in which Henry talked at random, without sense or connection, and Catherine, wrapt in the contemplation of her own unutterable happiness, scarcely opened her lips, dismissed them to the ecstasies of another tête-à-tête
Am I saying I love too many things? I WILL KEEP LOVING THINGS! This book is the best! I love it with my whole heart.
Here is a nice rendering of Henry's conversation with his father if you like fan fiction:
In Just Defiance
Now the crazy thing is how important John Thorpe was to the plot. His bragging about Catherine's wealth is the whole reason that Catherine was able to visit the abbey and probably secured her relationship with Henry Tilney, Thorpe's second interference has her sent home in disgrace, the catalyst for Henry's proposal. I don't even know if Henry and Catherine would have got together if it wasn't for that stupid idiot Thorpe! What a weird story!
I love John's lies though, exaggerating wealth and then poverty:
The expectations of his friend Morland, therefore, from the first overrated, had ever since his introduction to Isabella been gradually increasing; and by merely adding twice as much for the grandeur of the moment, by doubling what he chose to think the amount of Mr. Morland’s preferment, trebling his private fortune, bestowing a rich aunt, and sinking half the children, he was able to represent the whole family to the general in a most respectable light.
and then
They were, in fact, a necessitous family; numerous, too, almost beyond example; by no means respected in their own neighbourhood, as he had lately had particular opportunities of discovering; aiming at a style of life which their fortune could not warrant; seeking to better themselves by wealthy connections; a forward, bragging, scheming race. The terrified general pronounced the name of Allen with an inquiring look; and here too Thorpe had learnt his error. The Allens, he believed, had lived near them too long, and he knew the young man on whom the Fullerton estate must devolve.
"lived near them too long" is a great way to describe neighbours who have grown tired of each other.
It says that John is, "spurning a friendship which could be no longer serviceable" which makes me think that he actually ended things with James, not the other way around. Come on, James!
I love Catherine's ultimate conclusion about General Tilney, because I'm totally with her! He's the worst:
Catherine, at any rate, heard enough to feel that in suspecting General Tilney of either murdering or shutting up his wife, she had scarcely sinned against his character, or magnified his cruelty.
Oh the romance of it all, and the first time Henry defies his father:
The general, accustomed on every ordinary occasion to give the law in his family, prepared for no reluctance but of feeling, no opposing desire that should dare to clothe itself in words, could ill brook the opposition of his son, steady as the sanction of reason and the dictate of conscience could make it. But, in such a cause, his anger, though it must shock, could not intimidate Henry, who was sustained in his purpose by a conviction of its justice. He felt himself bound as much in honour as in affection to Miss Morland, and believing that heart to be his own which he had been directed to gain, no unworthy retraction of a tacit consent, no reversing decree of unjustifiable anger, could shake his fidelity, or influence the resolutions it prompted.
I do think it's a sign of Henry's growth that he finally defies his father, but I also get the feeling he's just never had any reason to go against him. It's my impression that he mostly maintained a civil relationship with his father so he could keep visiting Eleanor. Catherine is just the first thing to be important enough for him to fight back. *heart eyes*

Hi I recently discovered your account and I’m obsessed your writing is amazing and I don’t know if you’re still doing Tudor!reader Fics but if you are I have a request. So reader is Anne Boleyn’s eldest daughter and had to watch her mothers execution (for the storyline reader was 12 or so years old) and never forgave her farther so when she’s like 15 (maybe the day after Catherine Howard’s execution) she overthrows him as revenge. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say total understand if you don’t want to right it. Have a good day/night❤️
A/N: I love how kooky the timeline would have to be warped for this to be possible but I absolutely love the idea of this! So sorry for taking so long to write this, real life does enjoy getting in my way :(
Revenge
Tumblr media
Someone had to stop King Henry VII, your father, from his increasingly brutal reign. Lady Mary, your half-sister, seemed unable to do anything without the counsel of her precious Ambassador Chapuys. Elizabeth was of course just a child, too young to rule. Edward was a mere baby. It seemed to you that the responsibility of saving the realm fell solely on your shoulders. It was a burden you were glad to take.
You were grateful that you’d had enough time being raised by your mother Anne Boleyn, that you had learnt how to be as cunning and manipulative as she had once been. Of course, having Mary as an older sister helped solidify those ideals, as Mary was able to inspire a great deal of loyalty in others when she wanted to.
It had been a long, arduous task to slowly turn the King’s courtiers against him. An entire year had passed before the perfect opportunity had finally arisen. Only two days had passed since poor Queen Catherine Howard had been executed on your father’s orders. Though you hadn’t been the greatest fan of the silly child, she was just like you… an innocent girl. Too many young women’s lives had been destroyed on the whims of an undeserving King, and the unrest among the populace seemed at its highest. It was the perfect time to strike.
The foundations you had laid throughout the year, telling little white lies here and there, promising things that you’d never do in order to gain the loyalty of the courtiers, would serve you well. The King had noticed some changes but could never trace them back to you. Often you would have agents loyal to you do the work that needed to be done while you were at home with Elizabeth in the country, creating a wonderful alibi.
Knowing that the King seemed to be favouring Catherine, the Lady Latimer, as his potential sixth wife, you realised that she would be the perfect distraction for your coup. You knew she wanted to be with Thomas Seymour so she would be likely to help you, especially as you had always had a good relationship with her growing up. Elizabeth, of course, was easy to manipulate into playing the part that you needed her to.
You dressed in your most regal black dress, deliberately picking out jewels and a French hood that made you look like a true ruler. You took a deep breath in and out to try to calm your nerves and your trembling hands before you went into the court. You gave a subtle nod to Catherine Parr who, along with Elizabeth, went up to the King to talk to him and distract him.
As soon as the King had begun discussing something with them both, you gave the signal to your loyal people who captured his guards and those you knew were still loyal to him, discreetly dragging them away.
You gave a sly, satisfied smile as you secretly prepared your weapon behind your back. You knew that your father’s greatest fear was getting sick, so you poured a poison on your blade before walking up to him, curtsying, and then holding the blade tightly against his throat. “Y/N! What is this?!” King Henry asks incredulously, clearly not believing one of his daughters could pull this off, his face grew white as he saw all the people loyal to you with their weapons drawn.
“I am now your Queen. You will take orders from me, and no one else.” You call out to the people in the court, who begin to cheer. You smile smugly to yourself as you see your father’s world crashing down around him.
“Why, Y/N? Just… why?” You give an incredulous laugh, sneering at him. “Why, father? For my mother.” You lean forwards, your breath touching his face as you snarl your words.
You turn to your guards, and give a sweet smile. “Throw him in the tower.” You command, pushing your father towards them. You sit on the throne, looking around at your successful coup. Allowing yourself a few moments to gloat in your glory, you immediately turn to your advisors. The Queen had work to do.

Just wondering…are we gonna get a story with husband’s daughter anytime soon? Maybe like a lil cute princess tea party?
Oop. I sooooort of forgot about his daughter, but here's the fic!
Yandere husband thought his daughter’s version of princess tea time was ridiculous. If she had asked to be flown to Paris or Italy, where they could enjoy actual delicious crumpets and have people dote on them hand and foot, he would have agreed in a heartbeat. However, she seemed content to be in their cold, dark living room, and instead of having professional workers or servants, she enlisted her bratty older brother, Henry, to drop off the tea.
Yandere husband adjusted the childish accessory on his head, which threatened to cut off his circulation, and muttered his thanks to the pre-teen waiter. Henry held out his hand, and your husband slapped another dollar into his palm with a scoff. The fake plastic tiaras hurt his scalp, and no matter how many times he insisted that his daughter get a real one, she was always drawn to the ones advertised on television. To be fair, the tiaras endorsed by her favorite child pop star did look pretty cool. Every Sunday, he’d see that ad. The moment he heard the mind-numbing lyrics, he knew Moira’s face would be squished up against the screen. The shiny effects made the tiara look ten times prettier, and the promise of 'real' gems must have been appealing to an infant who could barely read the tiny disclaimer at the bottom of the screen.
He hated the tiny, uncomfortable chairs he was forced to sit in for hours. His large frame was on the verge of breaking them each time, and he swore he saw the legs of the chair bend under his full weight. The table where they held their most important princess meetings was never tall or big enough, yet the little girl in front of him couldn’t care less about his discomfort.
Ah, Moira. The most perfect, beautiful, adorable, sweet, charming, caring, imaginative, headstrong, brave, lovely, smart, free-spirited baby he had ever created. And then, well, there’s Henry too.
It took yandere husband some time to warm up to Henry; he’d had his reservations. He’d always wanted a child who looked like his wife, and on the second try, he finally got what he wanted.
The man reached over to gently adjust Moira's tilted crown, smiling as she babbled in response. "Are you hungry?" he asked, reaching for the organic peach puree beside him. He scooped up the smooth baby food and brought it to her lips. "You must be—especially after telling me all about your plans to take over the neighboring kingdom," he said, amused.
Moira squealed, nodding her head excitedly. For a split second, a look of naughtiness crossed her face—a glint of mischief sparkled in her eyes as she clapped her hands together. Yandere husband just knew she’d raise hell the moment she could speak and start bossing him around. And it would be a job he’d carry out no matter the ask, as if his life depended on it.
Eat up, dear. Sleep awaits you, and when you wake up in the morning, we’ll have another tea party,” Yandere husband murmured, watching as the infant swallowed her food and opened her mouth for another spoonful. “And perhaps we can discuss your plans to dethrone your mother, hmm?”

How would Catherine or Anna boleyn feel when the reader given birth to healthy triplets (2 boys and 1 girl) after she had Elizabeth also what yandere henry reaction to finally having the son he wanted???
Tumblr media
Old Catherine is too smart to react too strongly. She feels disappointed and resentful. She is very afraid for his daughter Mary. She's worried about her daughter's throne. She prays that her daughter is not harmed and that she can ascend the throne.
Anne tried to get rid of the reader at first. She has endeavored to eliminate reader and babies without giving birth to babies. She will be very angry. She was jealous of your reader, but now she's too jealous. She will try to do something to get rid of the reader and the babies. But Henry will fail because he is too protective of the reader and his babies. They will soon be executed for their actions.
Henry was frustrated after Elizabeth's birth. Anne became pregnant again but gave birth to a stillborn son. This had exhausted Henry's patience. He was both angry and very angry. He finds happiness in the reader in a short time. Henry makes your reader her legitimate mistress. Henry is overjoyed when the reader becomes pregnant. He protects and cares for your reader throughout her pregnancy. He is very happy and proud when his healthy triplets are born. He had never been this happy in his life now that he had male heirs. He tells the reader how he is proud of her and loves his. He will marry the reader. He will declare the triplets heirs to the throne. No one can stop Henry.

I too desperately want those cute/sneakily sexy letters! I wish I had the capacity to write them myself, but I do not think I'm as witty as Henry.
I also love picturing Henry back at his house, fretting over making it perfect for Catherine, and totally impatient about when she will be able to come to live there and see all the sweet little things he set up for her. So adorable.
Ugh this book is just so freaking delightful! Everybody, read it!
Thank you for your daily write-ups, Bethany!
Northanger Abbey Readthrough Ch 31
Whew, I have reached the end. That was a lot of work. We'll see if I do another one of these...
but as nothing, after all, could be more natural than Catherine’s being beloved
Awwwww...
Also, the Morlands 🤝Jane Bennet, believing that their beloved person will obviously be beloved by others:
Miss Bennet’s astonishment was soon lessened by the strong sisterly partiality which made any admiration of Elizabeth appear perfectly natural -Pride & Prejudice, Ch 40 (This is when Elizabeth tells Jane about Darcy's first proposal)
having never heard evil of him, it was not their way to suppose any evil could be told.
This becomes a really big deal in Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, and Persuasion, Elinor is constantly asking for more information about Willoughby, Meryton's not knowing about Wickham's character causes havoc, and Mr. Elliot is another case of hidden information revealing his character. Fortunately for Catherine, Henry is perfect.
Now, Henry may have been cut off from his father, but he's by no means poor, Of a very considerable fortune, his son was, by marriage settlements, eventually secure; his present income was an income of independence and comfort, and under every pecuniary view, it was a match beyond the claims of their daughter. It sounds like Woodston is a very good living, probably similar to Edmund's £800/year, so Henry is fully independent without any help from his father. It sounds like he will also inherit a portion of his mother's dowry when his father dies. Catherine bagged a catch! (without knowing it)
Henry returned to what was now his only home, to watch over his young plantations, and extend his improvements for her sake, to whose share in them he looked anxiously forward; and Catherine remained at Fullerton to cry. Whether the torments of absence were softened by a clandestine correspondence, let us not inquire. Mr. and Mrs. Morland never did—they had been too kind to exact any promise; and whenever Catherine received a letter, as, at that time, happened pretty often, they always looked another way.
Oh it's so cute. I can't even. But also, I WANT TO READ THOSE LETTERS!!!! Cruel Authoress, Jane Austen, giving me that tease. I want to read Henry Tilney sending little Gothic stories to Catherine with subtle sexual undertones...
Anyway
Then the narrator is like, "It's obviously the end of the novel, so you know this will resolve soon." Ah yes, so we do. Excellent observation.
Eleanor marries Lord Laundry List and paves the way for Catherine to get her man. This explanation of it is just so good:
I have only to add—aware that the rules of composition forbid the introduction of a character not connected with my fable—that this was the very gentleman whose negligent servant left behind him that collection of washing-bills, resulting from a long visit at Northanger, by which my heroine was involved in one of her most alarming adventures.
To begin perfect happiness at the respective ages of twenty-six and eighteen is to do pretty well
The narrator really comes back in this last chapter and teases us with this immoral "moral" message:
and professing myself moreover convinced that the General’s unjust interference, so far from being really injurious to their felicity, was perhaps rather conducive to it, by improving their knowledge of each other, and adding strength to their attachment, I leave it to be settled, by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience.
Lady Catherine plays this same role in Pride & Prejudice, as an aside. But yes, is the moral of this story that parental tyrants are good for love, or that being a rebellious son is rewarded? Either way, not the sort of moral a good, upstanding citizen should want.
What more can I say? I love this novel. It's so relatable, it's so human, the characters are so well drawn even though they are parodies! I want to be Catherine's best friend but I also want to steal her husband. General Tilney needs to fall down a staircase (a recently renovated one).
