They Came Before Us - Natalie Mitchell
“In 2019, I joined a collective of women dedicated to uncovering the UK’s history of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority Women as part of the Collage Arts Heritage Lottery project. The series focuses on the story of Catalina De Cardones, Lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon. These images play with the traditional positions of power that would’ve existed between a Queen and her Lady-in-waiting. This is not to say that Catalina is master over Katherine, more a display of Catalina’s care towards Katherine. Catalina would have cared for Katherine. She would have been her interpreter, helped her in a foreign land far from home; away from everything the two would have known.”

“ In the records, Catalina is identified as a slave and royal bedmaker. She is not accorded a surname and Catalina was probably not her real name. She was born in Motril, Granada, which until 1492 was an autonomous Muslim kingdom. As such, she almost certainly grew up a Muslim moor. But before 1501 she was enslaved, probably converted and placed in the service of Catherine of Aragon.
- By 1527, Catherine was menopausal and only one living daughter was born to the couple. Henry sought an annulment on the grounds that Catherine’s marriage to Arthur invalidated their union. Catherine insisted her first marriage had never been consummated. Catalina’s first-hand knowledge of the princess’s bedsheets became a matter of national importance.
By this point Catalina had left Catherine’s service and England, marrying a Moorish crossbow-maker called Oviedo in Ezcaray, northern Spain. To travel freely and marry, Catalina must have been liberated from slavery. It is not clear whether Catherine manumitted Catalina formally (in Spain this usually involved the payment of a redemption fee) or if Catalina’s service in England, which lacked a code for modern slavery, freed her. Catalina returned to Granada. She and Oviedo had two daughters before he died in Malaga, by 1531. As a widowed mother, Catalina moved back to her hometown of Motril. There, she was sought by Spanish agents seeking to confirm Catherine’s story, but if Catalina provided testimony about Catherine’s virginity, it has not been recovered. After 1531, Catalina disappeared from the records.” The Other Catalina, - Lauren Johnson

Everything wrong with Spanish Princess-1x01
The story of 1st episode. To sumerize-they didn’t do well at all. There are plenty of massive lies, already within first 2 minutes of 1st episode.
It starts with Catherine praying in 1501 and from very first costume to the last, you don’t see single remotely accurate headwear or dress on no female character, whetever in Spain or England. Costumes look like from Renaissance fair-all over the place, not fitting anywhere in particular.
Then the very first monolog-the introduction how England is desperate for rich allies to keep the French and Scottish at bay is extremely false. England had peace with France and peace with Scotland-whom they were actually defeating pretty well last they invaded! Henry VII by this point was also well-off financially.
(Not richest man in Europe by any means, but he certainly was no longer poor. He was also by this point secure on throne. Yes two more claimants were about to raise against him, but he didn’t even notice they left England in August. It wasn’t on his mind. He wasn’t desperate at all. He was only anxious, because Catherine was supposed to arrive in 1500! She arrived with delay of 12+ months, and he started to wonder if her parents were backing up from the alliance. As to whom was really desperate for that alliance to keep France from their lands, i recomend you read my posts about corespondence of Catherine’s parents with their ambassadors.)
This is big misrepresentation already in first scene!
2nd big misrepresentation is black lady Lina. Yes, there were black people at Tudor court(John Blanke probably from 1480s already!), but those people of colour which infanta brought with her to England, were not nobles. But slaves! Black Lina in Catherine’s household, was slave. Not her bestie! Catalina of Motril was not Catalina de Cardones.
They then have Catherine setting across Spain, to get on ship to England, with Isabella acompanying her and even fighting of rebels-personally in battle.
Catherine meanwhile prays as crazy person would, already suggesting the mental issues she clearly has for next 2 seasons.
(And we see in background Spanish carrying flag of St. George-English flag, why on their own territory would they do this empty gesture, when nobody can see it?! Also, Isabella tells Catherine to be loyal to Habsburg Empire-even though she and Ferdinand actually never liked Philip. Make it make sense-you can’t!)
The golden haired, fair-skinned Isabella, whose health was getting worse continously since late 1490s, who never fought personally in any battles, is seen destroying the rebel army, in full armour with sword in hand-and gets dark hair and tanned skin. Because she is spanish! So why not?(and why not set grounds for Warrior Queen Catherine in season 2.)
Nevermind it was actually Ferdinand II who went to handle those rebels, and upon whose return Catherine waited on, before she set North-
by herself(with her household of 50+ people), by way of Santiago-to Santago de Compostela, making that pilgrimage.(showing it would be accurate display of piety at those times. They skipped it.)
Like I get budget restrictions, but just 2 ladies? Rich daughter of Spain could affort only two ladies to accompany her? No Elvira, no Ines Venegas, and her daughters etc. Not even 5 ladies?!
They could at least give her 2 ladies which were historically accurate. Rosa didn’t even exist in real life!
The english scenes prove big plotholes in timeline. Elizabeth of York wasn’t pregnant in late 1501. Henry VII had tons of finances, tons of men, and saying otherwise is getting ridiculous! Why would Spain even want ally who would be unable to stand on its own? Zero logic!
Ovieto was moorish cross-bow maker from Spain, which Catalina of Motril, upon returning to Spain(as freed slave) married. No records places him in England. Why couldn’t they have John Blanke at court instead?
(In later episodes there is black man named John who is in-between Ovieto and Lina, so perhaps they tried to give us John Blanke, but failed miserably to present the few facts we know of his life.)
Also, they showed just 1 storm, through which Catherine had to go through, while in fact she survived two. 1st returned her all the way back to Spain, causing big delay, (and made Henry VII even more anxious to see her, because he thought it was possible she’d die on the journey). Henry VII sent his own man(a captain) to guide Catherine’s ship across water.
Another issue i had with sea scenes, was how the arrogant Catherine(that alone irks me) ordered her people to set sail to Plymouth instead of Southampton. She is told that they are not expected there, yet she commands it. This is supposed to show Catherine as authoritative, decisive, strong figure.
But it ignores facts. Catherine’s parents decided that should weather allow it, she should sail to Southampton OR alternatevely to Plymouth. (It’s in their corespondence with English side). That is why there was welcome party ready for Catherine. Otherwise the locals wouldn’t be nearly so ready to welcome her ‘as if she was saviour of the world.’(which actually was ment she was welcomed with pomp). So the whole scene where she disembarks by tiny boat and is immediately , welcomed by common local pople is total crap! She docked at port, where welcome party was ready for her.
By the way, already when Margarte of Austria was sailing for Spain, it was planned ahead-what if weather brought her to English shores(and it indeed did, she spent month in English harbour!), several years prior to this! They didn’t understimate the weather of English channel.
The scenes with Pole family is there solely to set up ground for villying Margaret Beaufort and making her into overbearing hag, the villain set to destroy Catherine in the future. Lady Margaret is set as horrible woman, her speach full of arogance, demanding respect she supposedly wasn’t entitled to(Princess courtsying to Margaret standing on high platform) and wishing Catherine would learn the english ways straight away. Even though, adjusting to local customs would however actually be expected from any foreign bride, and without a word complain. That is not lady Margaret being evil, that is actually what Catherine’s own parents in their letters were telling her to do! It was expected at those times.
The journey of Catherine soaked in rain, is totally ignoring that they used to have covered vagons(predecesors of carriages) already back then!(and that they were prepared for her arrival).
Conversations of Catherine with anybody in English since arriving to England are purely fictional-as she didn’t speak English! I also dont get the flirtatious tone of Buckingham, he wouldn’t dare!
Then we have prayers of English royals once again in empty chapel, with no priests, no servants around. Why?! Can’t they accurately show catholic faith in this tv show at least once? Or courtier/royal relationship and behaviour?  (I’ve seen it before, so i can answer-nope, they won’t give it to us!) Whole scene is there solely to set up ground on evil Henry VIII. He was mean to his sister and throwing tantrums all day! Because he is evil! And doesn’t care about his sisters.
One fish-net and horns on Catherine’s head later(true to Philippa Gregory’s intentions!), Catherine arrives to house with less than 40 people in total. And less than 10 wait to meet her there.
There Lady Margaret speaks Latin(which according to Puebla she did not)-correction: he was actually speaking about English ladies in general not about lady Margaret and Elizabeth of York), and the arogant princess replies she speaks English perfectly, and is horribly rude! Overbearing, commanding. And tbh, she stays same bitch entire 2 seasons! Sorry, i didn’t mean to say it, actually, yes i did. They made my good Queen Catherine into bitch!
Siesta i don’t mind, the notion however that Catherine would be so f-cking rude that I mind very much. She’d be raised to be always polite and respectful.
Notion that Margaret Beaufort never ever seen parrot before, is also untrue. Exotic animals were delivered to England pretty often, and many people kept them as pets. Idea of exotic pets was not introduced to England by Spanish Princess!
Then they try to excuse Catherine’s rudeness as mere insecurity.
(And continue to excuse the character’s bad behaviour for 2 whole seasons.)
By the way the house they are in is build after Henry VIII’s lifetime. At least the windows and ceilings are. And more of such interiors and exterior, which are after reign of Henry VIII, can be seen throughout the series.
Henry VII didn’t wake Catherine from siesta. He arrived after nightfall and at those times people already went to sleep with sunset. He didn’t bang on door, he asked to see Catherine, and though her duena refused, Catherine graciously agreed to meet him.
She wasn’t rude, she didn’t say they needed her more than she needed them, etc. If so, the benefits or no benefits, Henry VII would be livid. And given how rude they show Catherine  to all english royals so far, they are setting Catherine’s poverty as-she caused it by herself, had she not been so rude, they’d help her!
The freely falling hair, the oufits with non-white linen, omg-what the heck is with Arthurs codpiece. Why is it jumping up and down? I’ve seen recreations, it doesn’t do this if tied properly. It looks like somebody tied piece of fabric over what he wears underneath, instead being part of it.
Arthur and Catherine couldn’t speak to one another without translator. That is actually pretty famous point of their meeting! I had arguments about why that occured!
Henry VIII was 10 when Catherine arrived and he mostly didn’t share residence with Arthur. No way he could sent letters instead of Arthur for months!
Why is Margaret pointing out that Catherine is rude spoiled brat set as bad thing? At those times it was seen as good thing to be humble and obedient. Whomever wrote this cannot be fan of 15th nor 16th century, otherwise they’d know.
I didn’t know this, but Thistle pointed out that lots of scenes were filmed in Caerphilly castle, which is almost complete ruin.I agree it’s certainly not how English royal residences would look at those times. If you played Kingdom Come Deliverance, you might get idea how castles actually looked like on inside and the sterotypical barren stone, dark interiors are certainly not it. Also the typical tops Tower of London has, has only been given there by Henry VIII during his reign. Thistle thinks such derelict locations were chosen to sell idea of English being impoverished, and it seems so.
Once again, Henry was 10. He was head shorter than Catherine, child, and though appeared to be smitten by Catherine, he certainly wouldn’t flirt with her.
Henry starting to like crossbow upon seeing it for first time? Proper englishman was learning how to lean into English bow and shoot that way. and Henry was no exception. However, it certainly wouldn’t be first time Henry ever seen a crossbow. French used them already in Hundred Years War!
I also don’t see him destroying the expesive tapestries in his father’s properties. Some of those tapestries sometimes cost same or more than a warship! This is just for setting ground for Henry being brat!
By the way Henry VII spent massive sum on celebrations of Catherine’s arrival and her wedding to Arthur, so these baren undecorated interiors are very misrepresenting. Once again selling false narrative England poor and desperate, vs rich Spain.
Arthur says Henry was belittling him, making fun of him over the letters-how when they barely ever share residence?! It’s so false! Also there is no evidence of Henry VIII ever being jealous of his brother being heir instead of him!
As is Buckingham seducing the non-existent Rosa(yes that is false character), and English soldier attempting to rape Catalina de Cardones, which wasn’t royalty(that is false also). The soldier would have to be insane to atempt to rape one of infanta’s ladies while at court, and makers just want to set narrative for noblewoman cardones marrying beneat her to common soldier, english being rotten(seducing and raping girls, being racist).
Elizabeth of York and Catherine of Aragon, being same height. Omg. Really?!Nevertheless the conversation is false, Catherine didn’t speak English.
Hope of England and Spain, AND of Hasburg Empire?(again?!) What has it do with Catherine?! Also, being Emperor being Habsburg didn’t make all of Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Empire, the term started to be used about lands of Charles V, because he had very large holdings, and relatives in all places. it’d not at all be used around 1501.
Elizabeth of York supposeldy sexist-asking for sons only, no girls. Catherine in real life was regretful over blood spilled before her arrival.
Why the kisisng?! No reason for it at all.
Columbus gives Catherine compass? Is he the only histirical figure they could remember to place in Catherine’s path?
God, the actress is so skinny! At the time that was actually discouraged, and Catherine was actually pleasantly plum.
The wedding dress imo is strongly  resembling that of Princess Diana’s.
Also, they used satin damask. Damask, no matter if some parts of it are in satin weave, is not pure satin. Catherine’s wedding dress was described as being of white satin. Even if it is satin damask-it is still the wrong fabric!!!
And from rest of the dress and headwear, only the lower part of sleeves is accurate. Maybe the pearls and golden embroidery-though tbh, not really. Because it is supposed to be spanish embroidery-and what they created doesn’t resemble at all any which I’ve seen in historical portraits of Spain at right time.
Rest from head to toe, the outfit is wrong, including her chopines, as at spain at the time, they had much broader sole.
Another big mistake is Catherine saying:”daughter of Spain, wife to prince Arthur, and soon Queen of England.”
Saying she is soon to be Queen of England, would be clasified at those times as wishing King to die! They believed that by saying such things, you could curse person to die, so they took it very seriously. As a treason, when you spoke of King dying.
Catherine as foreigner would probably not viewed as traitor, but it would still result in English side being horribly insulted and cause big diplomatic dispute.
They should have used ‘And future Queen of England’.
Honestly by end of 1st episode you can conclude it is stuff of nightmares. And you think you cannot be more disapointed that this. But each episode, you get more and more disapointed and more like WTF?! No, they didn’t screw Catherine this badly, did they?! This has to be joke! It cannot be so innacurate.
Why I am returning to the show which already aired and long finished?
Because this tv show claimed to honour Catherine’s life, to show us true Catherine, to show us what she should be admired for. And instead they showed such innacurate false unlikable character, that many people instead started to dislike her, to be disgusted by her, and even to hate her! Because they believe this tv show.
Because tv show makers mislead them into thinking they care about accuracy and about real story. While in fact there is very few things even remotely accurate/tiny bit accurate etc. It is rightfully criticized as horrible, in all aspects.
Plotline, personalities and looks of characters, costumes, the period. All of it, is grossly misrepresented. Except good acting of few actors, there is no other thing to praise it for. Which is shame. If they fallowed real events, it’d be way better!
But they decided to screw over our good Queen and it still irritates me.
As for the supposedly accurate auburn hair:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This dude has hair like Catherine:
Tumblr media
Or these ladies are pletty close:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this gorgeous girl’s hair is also better to fit to Catherine’s real hair:
Tumblr media
They claimed they looked at Catherine’s hair in her famous portrait and then dyed actress hair this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You might try to excuse that red hair vs strawberry is not a big deal, that they are not that different-except actually they are. Catherine’s real hair was closer to colour of gold(not blond) than to red.

i know, i know, i know. it’s not worth complaining about a show that’s so objectively bad, but good lord does the spanish princess make my blood boil. emma frost and her hacky pseudo-feminist writing make my blood boil. the fact that she just spouts off woke sounding phrases like empowerment and agency in interviews makes my blood boil. having elizabeth of york get raped by henry vii in the white princess and claiming it was actually a really empowering moment for her. turning margaret beaufort into a shrill zealot with virtually no redeeming qualities - but oh, it’s ok, she effectively utilised girl power when she had the princes in the tower killed & then murdered jasper tudor when he found out about it! claiming that catherine of aragon coming to england is an “immigrant story” (ok, it was charlotte hope who actually said this one lol). giving your protagonist a black best friend and patting yourself on the back about it, whilst completely ignoring the historical context about the real lina (catalina of motril), who was a slave. claiming that catherine of aragon began her marriage as an equal to henry viii but then was “turned into a brood mare” (direct quote!!!) having catherine actually fight at the battle of flodden because you can’t be bothered developing nuanced characters and plotlines that actually make sense, so instead you just put her in armour, give her a sword and slap a hacky tagline like “fight like a woman” over it all. i hate that in the year of our lord 2020 network executives see this shit and say “yep, sounds great, go ahead!” everything about it is so fucking insulting.

I don’t like to get into polemics because I’m a calm person, but for second and last time I will answer. I acknowledge Katherine’s flaws, I have no problem admitting that she was astute and intelligent as a politician woman (and it makes her fascinating to me). She struggled to survive in a men's world. Also she was naive because she trusted too much in the people she wanted. Katherine was a perfectionist and she was slow to admit her failure to other people: fear of ridicule or other reasons. She was dramatic as when she pressured her father with an ultimatum: her return to Spain to enter a convent or she would commit suicide. Dramatic sometimes, but not always.
We cannot say that Katherine was hysterical because she had three moments of fury: her fight with Doña Elvira Manuel, her first and only jealous attack and when Henry Fitzroy was promoted. She was a woman of strong character behind a sweet and calm appearance, many people loved her. She was stubborn and rancorous. Katherine had periods of depression and melancholy, but she was not crazy. She was a very religious woman, but not the only one.
Teatrical sometimes, but not always. Blackfriars? If your husband subjects you to a great public humiliation, I believe that you will defend yourself with nails and teeth of a false accusation. She had the courage to become her own lawyer and defend herself before the king, a court and the people.
She was a warrior Queen but not a Salomé. Flodden? I think that Katherine's letter to Henry is misinterpreted. According to many historians, Katherine had the intention of sending James’s body (some even say “head”) as a trophy to her husband, but the Englishmen thought it was too crude so she settled his bloodstained coat instead. There are people who say that Katherine intended to send James as prisoner to France, in exchange for Henry sending her the Duke of Longueville – that’s what she meant by saying she intended to send the king’s person, but the stout ‘English hearts’ would not stand for it (and killed James) so she sent his bloodied coat instead.
“ In this your Grace shall see how I keep my promise, sending you for your banners a king’s coat. I thought to send himself unto you, but our Englishmens’ hearts would not suffer it. “
If Katherine wanted to send the king’s body (which had been suitably ‘bowelled, embalmed and cered’) in a coffin to France … Why it is insufferable for the Englishmen’s hearts? The soldiers shed much blood on the battlefields: beheadings, disembowelments, mutilations … and public executions are not pleasant to see. They could leave James IV alive and not kill him. For me the supposed cruelty of Katherine and the supposed sensitivity of the Englishmen does not make sense, sorry, it is my point of view.
About Katherine's slave, some time ago I wrote a post about Catalina de Motril.  I am absolutely against slavery, it seems to me one of the most shameful and cruel acts that the human being has committed. Unfortunately, this practice has existed since immemorial times from the first civilizations to the present. In my country during the Middle Ages the Christians had Muslim slaves, and the Muslims had Christian slaves. Katherine was a girl when her parents gave her slaves to her service. Catalina de Motril received her freedom in England and to my knowledge, Queen Katherine did not mistreat her.
I have the right to put a pinch of salt on SOME pro-Boleyn historians by biased (as Joanna Denny), as they on Eustace Chapuys and other reports. Nobody is perfect. Peace and love.

Spain claim their eighth Blind Football European Championships title * Euro Weekly News Spain
Spain take on gold and qualify for Tokyo 2020 CREDIT: Fispic @Fispic_official Twitter
Spain were crowned winners of the Blind Football European Championships by beating France in Rome this afternoon (Tuesday).
Both teams secured a place at next year’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo by reaching the final of the Blind Football European Championships in Rome.
Spain qualified for Tokyo 2020 after beating England in their semi-final.
Although England’s keeper saved Spain’s first effort in the shoot-out, they were successful with the next two and two saves from their own keeper ensured their progress towards the final and towards the 2020 Paralympic games.
The English players offered an honourable campaign throughout the championships and had finished the top qualifiers of their group, only to be overtaken on goal difference by France.
Spain having come through the tense penalty shoot-out against England to advance to the final, enjoyed a more clear-cut match against France.
The Spanish team produced an impressive display to earn a 3-1 victory against their rivals. It was the first time since 2013 that Spain had won the title, when they also defeated France in the final. With this title, Spain have won the championships a total of eight times of the 12 editions of the tournament.
England recovered from their semi-final loss by winning the third-place play-off against Turkey. England faced another tight match which was ultimately decided on penalties. This time England edging their rivals 1-0.
Following the conclusion of the event, three Paralympic qualifying spots remain.
Two places will be on offer at the Asia Regional Championships in Thailand later this month, while the final spot is decided at the African qualifier in November.
Spain and France have joined world champions Brazil, Americas qualifiers Argentina and host Japan in next year’s Paralympic Games tournament.
Hosts Italy finished sixth at the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) European Championships after suffering a heavy defeat to reigning champions Russia.

Catalina de Motril, credit to sheebsfeedandseed on Instagram
“In the records, Catalina is identified as a slave and royal bedmaker. She is not accorded a surname and Catalina was probably not her real name. She was born in Motril, Granada, which until 1492 was an autonomous Muslim kingdom. As such, she almost certainly grew up a Muslim moor. But before 1501 she was enslaved, probably converted and placed in the service of Catherine of Aragon.”

Everything wrong with Spanish Princess-1x02
I won’t go over repeated mistakes(or at least I’ll try).
First shot of walking from Cathedral-Arthur’s sleeve is f-cking disgrace!  He too, was supposed to wear white satin. I also think it big mistake that they skipped whole wedding ceremony, and the famous ‘Paul’s walk’(really long journey from one end of Old St. Paul’s Cathedral to the other’),
Tumblr media
and great many rich cloths that were placed all over Old Cathedral at time of wedding. (But that would show that England wasn’t poor!)
Also, it is bloody obvious wedding is not filmed at November! You can see the plants in background, so freshly green(and no those were not fabrics with tudor colours-white and green).
On her wedding night Catherine burns the fictional letters. She waits alone in bedroom, no ladies, no priest-no people which would customarily settle married couple into bed, close the courtains and only then leave!
Arthur and Catherine talk in English(which she didn’t speak!) and she is insulting Scots. And tells him to butcher them! (OMG!!! They really set her as blood-thirsty arrogant bitch!)
Arthur replies that his father has worse panishment installed-sending his brother Harry to them and to marry some Scottish lady. Which is totally untrue. By that point it was already suggested(though not yet official, just as peace with Scotland was not yet oficial, but two countries have for 3-4 years been in peace)that it’d be Margaret Tudor who will marry Scotland, and had prince Harry married Scottish lady, she’d be moving to England. Not other way around!
Honestly given her atitude i am very surprised they showed Arthur going for her-all eager!
She kneels him?! WTF? That is supposedly why they didn’t consumate?! (no it isn’t, but more about it later.) Then she has flirtatious dream about boy of ten. Arthur’s nighthown is so not early 16th century.
Arthur warns Catherine about dancing and says she must dance English dance. However, in real life she and her ladies danced spanish dance and english danced english dances, there was no issue with this!
Henry VIII and Arthur’s conversation is so rude, and so not true. Harry was ten. And he wouldn’t speak of Catherine as of horse. Not in public! even if he thought of her
Labelling Lina as Exotic maid and it having some sort of bad canotation? Oh once again they go with English being racist. Untrue. Black people at renaissance courts(if they were free, and not slaves-then it’d be different) were treated basically same way as for example somebody suffering from dwarfism. As curiosity. But very well treated!
And given John Blanke might have been part of English court since 1488, would English in 1500s still find somebody of dark skin so interesting? Maybe newcomers to the court, but mostly no! They’d be used to it. Sure, some men are into women of exotic looks, but the word would quickly spread it is one of infanta’s close ladies, and nobody would dare to aproach such lady with disrespect, for fear of insulting the infanta! (And for fear of King being angry with them for insulting the infanta.)
That was how servant-master relationship worked. Even if we talked about historically accurate Catalina of Motril, she’d still be shielded by high status of her owner. To be aproached like this in public and be treated with great disrespect would not have happened. Not directly. Some snickering in distance, maybe, but direct confrontation? No.
But I wonder, why they didn’t show Thomas More writing his not politically correct viewpoint about non-white people in Catherine of Aragon’s household, upon her arrival.
(Considering we have him in season 2, they could have already show him!)
Lady Margaret being matchmaker for Catherine’s ladies is also untrue! And she certainly wouldn’t toss anybody from court, without King’s permission.
Catherine and Arthur lived one month together in London before going to Welsh Marshes. But supposedly they leave tomorrow?! 2nd day after wedding?! They skipped Tudor christmast! All 12 days of it!
Also in this scene birds are chirping. I am not saying they never do it in late autumn, however, as i am keen bird-watcher, it sounds to me as happy spring/summer chirping. As do costimes without furs, the greenery you can see behind windows etc.
No way lady Pole would think of Catherine as of child. Catherine was 15, nearly 16. Not 13. And they go again with Lady Margaret being like lord Varys-the spymaster, always paranoid.
More greenery, Elizabeth of York with fur-but rest of costumes and all the background giving it away it is not late autumn. I am born at that time of year. Leaves should be fallen everywhere!
Interiors of Tudor royal residence is so tiny! Sure, I didn’t expect Westminster Great Hall, but really they could have spent budget on decent interior!
By the way I forgot to mention. Upon Catherine’s arrival to London, she didn’t stay at Tower of London(that was reserved for nights before coronations), she actually stayed in house of Archbishop of Cantenbury, in Lambeth in Lambeth Palace. To there she returned after first visit of London, exchanging gifts, dancing etc. Thistle pointed to me, that there in Lambeth would be the ideal spot to introduce some characters important in season 2-namely the commander who lead English into victory at Flodden. He had house just next to Archbishop’s Palace. I agree, this is huge oportunity wasted! Plus the Lambeth Palace is still standing! They couldn’t even use footage of its exterior?!
Also, wife of this commander is very infamous Tudor character, and she loved their residence in Lambeth. (So maybe instead of Columbus, they should have given us her! She was actually Catherine’s lady once Queen!)
But back to wedding celebrations-in that ‘Great’ Hall is totally not Tudor chandelier. And since it is  hanging so low, you can see it most of time!
The costumes go from bad to worse.
Scots arrive late-because they are barbarians(apparently), and Catherine will have to go and butcher them all! Because she is bloodthirsty bitch! (At least in this tv show.)
By the way Henry was 10, Margaret was about to turn 12. They look adult to me, in those scenes!
Even as Queen of Scotland, 1,5 years later, aged 13, Margaret looked as kid!
Tumblr media
Thomas Wolsey became chaplain to Archbishop of Cantenbury in 1502! To Henry VII only in 1507! He was not yet chaplain and would most likely be too unimportant at those times to attend the wedding celebrations at court. (They should ahve given us different characters instead of him)
More of Buckingham’s seduction. Awkward dancing, which actually never took place. Catherine finally having some regrets about death of earl of Warick and beg for forgiveness? Too late, you already made her into coldhearted bitch before, so her initial reaction to this-i dont care, is not being forgotten over this ‘show of regret’.
(and honestly, they do this several times in the show-present her as coldblooded bitch and then she changes her mind and we’re supposed to forgive all that she has done. HELL NO!)
Catherine and future Henry VIII didn’t dance together back then. He danced with his sister Margaret.
Margaret Tudor being surprised over Scots being interested at her, when her possible wedding to Scottish King was already discussed in 1497?! And 4 years later she is surprised? Tbh, that marriage was already discussed before January 1502. They just pushed it foward, since Arthur’s marriage was already concluded and they had free ambassadors etc. Margaret’d know about at least of posibility of such match!
Another of Catherine’s ladies falling for seduction, hence is actually of rotten character, by catholic standards back then.
Margaret Tudor would certainly not insult the ambassador of Scotland. Margaret admiring Catherine and saying she’d kill Scottish King with her bare hand?! WTF?! What is there to admire?!
(They push narrative of arroganta and rude Catherine being admired for no reason several times during the show.)
Catherine blames Elizabeth of York for killing Warick?! And blames Arthur for not touching her? When she kneeled him?!(in this tv show) Mocks him? Etc?!
OMG-she insults england-as dark little country and proclaims herself daughter of two greatest monarchs the world has ever known?!
WOW. I forgot about this scene. But still Wow!
Even if real Catherine thought that way, she’d never be as impolite and rude to say it outloud!
Catherine’s real life motto was  ‘Humble and loyal’. It seems whomever made this tv show didn’t know of it!
This Tv show really grossly  misrepresents the real Catherine’s personality!
Had Catherine been so rude, Arthur would be all within his rights to punish her for her rudeness. At those times, men could legally beat their wives, and misbehaving wives could be publically punished etc. And i am not for domestic violence. But that bitch’s rudeness was slap-worthy.
And that was before this comment:
“If you challenge me I shall defeat you?!”
That is threatening her husband with violence, and those times, she wouldn’t be the boss. Not even gentle Arthur would allow her to talk to him this way! (And petty me, certainly would not.)
Princess Margaret and Catherine being close? Not in real life. And once wrong season! They travelled in winter!
Also they misinformed us about Sweat. There was no outbreak before Arthur and Catherine even left London. Outbreak near Ludlow must have been pretty small. Which makes sense because it wasn’t usual time of year for Sweat.
The incompetent prince Arthur hitting tree in frustration instead of actually managing his lands, as he did in real life.
Catherine tries to make amends? After being b? All is forgiven if you are rude, horrible and then do bit of nice for the other person? I’d sent her to hell.
Pious Catherine says she sees beauty of islam. THIS IS BEYOND BIG MISTAKE. Hell no! Maybe islamic architecture and outfits, but not of the religion! (If they didn’t mean the religion, then once again very poorly chosen words of dialog alias lazy writing!)
From her description you’d never be able to able to imagine Alhambra. Why would Arthur be intriqued by those few words? It’s so bizzare. So poorly written!
She says word-and he jumps?! Like puppy on leash? Maybe, if he already thought about sex.
And they consumated the marriage-no other possibility. The White Queen made us wonder who killed the princes in the Tower(which I liked, even though I know one of those alleged possible murderers is highly unlikely to have been involved). Here no room for discussion! No making us wonder etc. No, let’s make her into BIG LIAR AND HORRIBLE CHRISTIAN.
If i was Arthur, I’s still let her eat it later. But he seems to have forgotten and forgiven entirely later on. Sure some relationship use sex as way to make peace, but this is ridiculous. She insulted his country and mainly his mother!
Margaret insulting Scots again, being against the marriage to old King James, thinking he might die next winter. He was at that the time 28! Old?! This trully was written by teenager, wasn’t it?
English cannot affort 100,000 crowns dowry for Margaret?! Their treasury is empty?! This is such a lie! Plus half of Catherine’S dowry already arrived and Henry VII received it! 100,000 crowns of it! Literally impossible scenario!
Margaret’s tender age was reason why lady Margaret and Elizabeth of York were adamant to not have Margaret Tudor sent to Scotland. Because she was 12! Lady Margaret wasn’t uncaring grandmother!
Shoulders uncovered? This is not supposed to be victorian drama! Also, they are kissing in public, for everybody to see and she gets away with lying about consumation?! How would she?!
Lina discussing with Rosa that they must marry Tudor? Only unmarried Tudor at the time was prince Harry! They mean somebody on Tudor’s side, loyal to them, which at those times would be any Tudor courtiers presumably, until proven otherwise.  These are avoidable mistakes in script! Lazy writing!
Lina gets sweating sickness and is horribly sick, and wanders off to forest, Ludlow has castle walls, gates, and would have had guards. She’d not wander away without being noticed.  Accuracy of her chemise is also horrible. What’s up with linnen being colourful in this tv show?! The white linnen was statement of power and wealth. Because it didn’t stay white for long.  By making almost every chemise in tv show non-white, they are setting characters to be of lower class in eyes of Tudor. Poor people, basically.
Whole scene of Ovietto saving Lina is to set fictional relationship between noble lady and common soldier. Untrue!
But in this tv show, Catherine doesn’t catch the Sweat later on. Which is horribly inaccurate! Catherine nearly died!!!
(That is why she couldn’t say she was virgin and not pregnant straight away. She was still weak weeks later! (Yes she was moved in real life, but she just made it through worst of the disease and was still very weak. Her being moved in such state   proves that in real life there must have been outbreak of some disease(and you can catch sweat more than once!), otherwise Catherine wouldn’t be moved so hastily. That is detail, people should not overlook when trying to figure out how Arthur died!)
More of inaccurate chemises. Catherine allowed to freely enter room when sick is kept? They’d not allow it! (also continuity mistake, because in season 2 everybody is so scared of Sweat and flee immediately, including Catherine.)
Also statement that thousands died when Tudor army brought it to England, is incorrect. It is a myth. Several things actually suggest Sweat appeared before Bosworth. (I am planning to do post about Sweating Sickness, I’ll explain there.)It is widely spread myth, by those who wish to present Tudor dynasty as evil-making plague appear when Henry VII arrived to take throne(evil timing, signaling bad omen). It didn’t happen that way.
Arthur’s parents were informed of him being dead, not of him being sick.
They didn’t travel to Ludlow in real life.(and it’d be suicide to do so!and for Catherine to be by Arthur’s side as he was sick.)
Also in previous episode Elizabeth of York cannot travel because she is with child, and suddenly she can? Continuity mistakes!
Catherine making peace with lady Pole wouldn’t happen as Catherine was still not recovered.
By the way why would Arthur assume Catherine was sent away? If they consumated the marriage, he’d hope she had a child and stayed in England.
Arthur’s body didn’t go to London but to Worcester Cathedral! Completely different part of England! Catherine didn’t attend the funeral, nor his parents or close family. Such was the custom at those days!
Oh, again with curse from White Princess! It is such fiction! Curses?! Really?! This is screaming fiction! Why do people think this was real?!
By the way, does anybody knows if Mantilla(if this is supposed to be it) was worn at turn of 15th and 16th century? And if so, if it looked like this:
Tumblr media
It doesn’t seem right to me. And like nothing Isabella of Castile wore when mourning, and from what i could find online, Mantilla starts to take of in late 16th century. But I am not from Spain.
Hope you’ve enjoyed this post.

Victory for Esquina walking football team * Euro Weekly News Spain
WINNERS: ESQUINA Park Rangers Walking Football Team
ESQUINA Park Rangers Walking Football Team were in action on Friday 20th September, playing against Hondon Valley Flyers.
Beardy Geoff was Ref for this game and kept the boxing to a minimum.
Esquina pounced first with Stuart the former Chester Casual somehow nipping the ball into the net.
Big Dave Meldrum with more tattoos than Edinburgh, played in goal and kept out Hondon for a while until Big Andrew Webster tripped over his shoe-lace and encroached on the six-yard box giving Hondon a penalty.
Hondon stepped up and despite Dave’s best effort, scored making it 1-1.
Hondon went 2-1 up as the Esquina Players moaned about a high ball which deflected off a player’s nose. Geoff was having none of it and the goal stood.
With Esquina on the back foot, Dangerous Darren, managed to toe-poke the ball past their stranded keeper, making it 2-2.
Esquina had a couple of players sin-binned for two minutes each, Gordon being the first for an accidental slide tackle and Stuart for squaring up to the Hondon player who no-one can understand.
Into the last quarter and both teams were looking for the winner. It was Esquina’s persistence that paid off with Big Graham Cockburn toe-poking the ball into the corner of the net.
Esquina held on for a deserved 3-2 victory against a stubborn Hondon team.
Next Home Game is Friday September 27 at 11am against St. Patrick’s Evergreen.
All spectators welcome.
