hi shal!!!! long time no see it seems like.... i have a favour to ask… im doing a school project about media in the early 2000s and how they treat women and minorities, and i want it to be centred around supernatural. ive been looking around spnblr for essays about this, but the most on-topic i could find were meta, and i want to look at the context in which the show was created instead and use the show as evidence, yk? do you have any recs or nah? thank you for your time ily forever

That is.... so very cool. Despite dabbling in what you kids call meta these days, I'm not super great at calling up this stuff in my head. I think you could look through @drsilverfish because there are some era-specific motifs and @cassierobinsons has some meta that might be helpful.

Off the top of my head, one of the things that struck me growing up in that time is how my peers were so disgusted by the Jessica Simpson weight fiasco of 2009. I had peers refer to her as a cow and other derogatory insults. Just two years after that, 2011 and the Leviathan season hits the air with a lot of fat-shaming. There was one scene in season 7, I think it was REPO MAN, where Sam is sitting in a library and there is some shame heaped at the female librarian there to me feels very of the era. I remember laughing at the time and thinking, "Oh, like Jessica Simpson."

Yes, the "Lucifer" in the show is basically the thoughts Sam has and is unwilling to voice, so it makes a lot of sense that he's so judgmental about weight (and women) at this point, especially in light of his perfectionistic obsessions with weight and food. Sam/Lucifer is weird about not just the librarian "chubby" but also the mother of the kidnapped boy (Nora) "stupid cow."

It's still incredibly of the times the way it's written.

the woman coded thing is so stupid bc like not only are there actual women in spn, you can also apply storylines usually involving women to men, it doesn’t make them female coded it just means they’re being given a specific role in a story?? also half the stuff they claim is supposedly woman coded is straight up gender essentialism, like babes having long-ish hair is not at all related to gender
