Just reread City of Heavenly Fire! I can’t believe it’s been 8 years since the last time I read it. I want to share some thoughts- but also, first, here are some of my favorite funny moments from the book:

Anyways, now onto a few of my thoughts:

Recently I saw a post that even though TMI, being Cassie’s first series was pretty poorly written (fair and valid), but it was still fun to read, to follow around Clary and her gang of impulsive friends and just enjoy the characters and world that the author had built. I completely agree, and this reread has especially helped solidify that. Sure, this isn’t ground-breaking, stunning writing. But it is enjoyable!! It’s characters you love and invested in. It’s a world you’ll like reading about and being immersed in! It can be really funny while still having scenes that are really gripping or heartbreaking. Of course there are minor flaws- the pacing is sometimes too slow or fast, and the huge ensemble of characters can make your head spin, but if you like this little group of 6, then the book is good. It’s really, REALLY fun to read. And the characters, despite being not always being the best-written characters she’s ever written- they’re still memorable, and I still love seeing them pop-up in other books- they’re lovable and memorable and just overall, kind of iconic.

Also, one more thing. I think Cassandra Clare has a such a unique style of writing endings. They have such a way of making you give a small sigh of relief, letting you think the big problem is solved, the conflict is over- only for there to be heart-wrenching drop when things don’t wrap up quite right, when you realize that things won’t be perfect yet, there’s still a long road ahead. And even though I knew they WOULD wrap up- I’ve read TDA and I know Helen and Mark get to go home, that Emma and Julian end up happy, that Simon will eventually be happy with his friends again- I was still crying when I read about Simon’s memories getting taken, and when I read the final Council meeting scene. She’s really good at creating that sort of bittersweet, open-ended-ness in her finales. But at the very end, the final epilogue still lets you close the book on a happy, peaceful note instead of a completely sad one. It’s a unique feel, and something that I can’t help but note.

Anyways, to wrap up!! CoHS was a good read! TMi is still fun to read :))) and I’m excited to reread the other books too!

So I've returned from another prolonged hiatus because I'm finally finishing Chain of Thorns after 18 months of terror, and for fucks sake I've read almost all of the book in like two hours, maybe three at this point, time is blending together, I'm at the massive battle climax which is fucking iconic and epic and I'm so fucking scared!

But hey whoever dies can't possibly hurt worse than when Jace Valaryon dies in HOTD season 3 and I have to watch him get shot out of the sky! So optimism, I'll be expressing tears soon, and then, the housekeeping of all the many obsessions I've acquired in recent months. As always, Cassie fucking Clare is murderous with her skill at climax battles

i’m actually really nervous about twow bc i feel like every series i made my whole personality from the ages of 10-17 ended really badly EXCEPT probably farscape and ummmm well…the disney series’ aksksj hsm3 and descendants 3 written by children’s media icon and genuinely amazing director, screenwriter, & choreographer kenny ortega both had really solid endings that fit the characters & themes & also there wasn’t a noticeable decrease in quality of writing. is it unserious to compare grrm to cassie clare, rick riordan, megan whalen turner, or the hacks who wrote once upon a time? absolutely. am i gonna stress regardless? also yes.

A Bright Heart by Kate Chenli (5/10)

If you enjoy the currently very popular genre of stories about girls in historical settings getting a second chance at life with knowledge from their previous one, this has that sort of premise. It’s what initially drew me to the book. However, unless you like the genre, this book is pretty mediocre. The plot is very simple and easy to predict, and the main character, Mingshin, is pretty bland and perfect; she knows how to solve every problem. As such there’s not really that much tension since there are few challenges she doesn’t immediately overcome. The love interest and honestly most of the side characters are pretty one-note, and the writing fluctuates between the flowery words you’d expect from the setting and jarringly modern phrases. Overall, I was really looking forward to this book, but I don’t think I’d like it at all if it wasn’t a plot I know I enjoy.

Ouran High School Host Club Vol. 1 (9/10) & 2 (8/10) by Hatori Bisco

These are rereads, and it’s just so much fun to read this series. OHSHC is definitely a dated manga with some jokes that aged badly and a style that has fallen out of practice, but it’s so enjoyable, especially for someone like me who read it a while ago. It has one of my favorite openings, the chaos of the Host Club gradually discovering Haruhi is a girl, and the chapters, while mostly individual shorts, do a great job of establishing the characters and through lines for once the story becomes more serious. These volumes are honestly so funny, and Haruhi’s one of my favorite manga protagonists (and a genderfluid icon).

The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O’Neill (9/10)

Despite being a very quick read, a graphic novel less than 100 pages long, this was adorably sweet and actually made me tear up. The art is lovely, and characters are very well developed for such a short book with a lot of casual representation in terms of race, sexuality, and ability. The art is beautiful and really enhances the ethereal vibe of the whole story. Also, I absolutely loved the little academic accounts of the different kinds of tea dragons and how to care for them in the back! This is a book that feels like a passion project and is a great cozy fantasy read!

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare (CR, 73%)

Cassie Clare was so close to figuring out that polyamory is an option in this book. She got it eventually, but the amount of times Tessa says she loves Will and Jem or one of them says they wouldn't be whole without the other...you have two hands for a reason! Otherwise, I think the pacing in this book is better than in the first one. I think a large part of that is Will's side of things with his curse and whatnot. Tessa's a lovely person but there's only so many times we can rehash her internal turmoil before it starts to bore.

A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon (CR, 33%)

This book stresses me out, which is part of why I'm making such slow progress. I turn in page in fear of what horrible things will befall the characters. I'm particularly attached to Dumai, and I just find her storyline so interesting.

Lodestar by Shannon Messenger (CR, 24%)

If there's one thing Messenger can do, it's make you empathize with the characters because ugh I just want some answers! I really hope some major leaps are made in this book; I feel like it's been a while since a big reveal (the brother doesn't count we barely know him). Also, it seems this series is really pushing Fitz and Sophie lately, which makes me suspicious. When it comes to the romance aspect, they just seem so bland to me, and I don't quite trust that the story is so adamant about them getting closer.

Kit &  Ty’s reunion (Fan Fiction) - Part 9 (last but not least) - Do I see you?

A little more than three years after the Dark Artifices. The New York Institute’s roof.

Kit and Ty were sitting at the edge of the New York Institute’s roof. They were staring in silence at the lights of the city under the twilight sky.

Ty had fully recovered, but Kit knew a scar could still be seen across his chest, a reminder of his sacrifice for Kit’s life. The scratches on his face, the cut in his lips were still there, but fading. Despite them, and maybe also because of them, all Kit could see was the most beautiful face he had ever set his eyes upon. Ty was wearing a hoodie and it made him look younger, more vulnerable.

“Why did you do it?” said Kit suddenly, breaking the stillness. “Is it because you are a Centurion and have sworn to protect me? Or…” He took a deep shuddering breath. “Or is there another reason?”

At first, Ty said nothing.

After a few minutes, he finally spoke. His voice seemed softer, younger somehow, as if Kit was not sitting next to the Centurion, but next to the boy who had held a knife at his throat, a few years before. “I don’t know. Why do you think I did?”

“Do you… love me?” Kit’s voice was shaking. He was staring straight ahead, not wanting to meet Ty’s eyes.

“You know, Julian once told me that to love someone was to see them. I didn’t understand at the time but…”

“But what?” said Kit, and he forced himself to turn, slowly, to meet Ty’s gaze. 

Kit did not think he had ever seen Ty look at him, at anyone, this way. His silver-gray eyes were piercing, as if he could see through Kit’s. Ty always had an intense gaze, but this was different somehow. His eyes seemed to glow with a secret, like he knew something about Kit that Kit did not.

“When you enter a room, without even having to look at you, my entire body seems to sense you and to relax, as if I had been waiting for you all along.

But when I do look… I see that your eyes are different shades of blue, the way the sky changes colors, all through day and night. I can see the way, sometimes when you are sad, you smile to hide it, but your smile does not quite reach your eyes. I can see the way, when you are truly happy, you do not smile but your whole face seems to light in a fiery glow. I can see that you think sometimes you are a coward when in fact you are the bravest person I know. I can see in the way you hold yourself, in the way you hesitate, that you think you are unworthy. That you don’t deserve anything, any protection or any attention, and when you are shown any affection, you cringe, as if to shield yourself from it, but cannot help the flicker of hope in your eyes. And it makes me want to give you everything I own. So… what do you think? Do I see you?”

Kit had never heard Ty speak so many words in a row before. He didn’t think anyone ever had. He knew, somehow, that this was not a rehearsed speech, that Ty had simply compiled a list of things he noticed about Kit, and kept them in his brilliant mind, the way he would remember the number of windows on a building, the various benefits of bees or the different stages of most animals’ migration cycles.

Kit smiled at Ty then, and it touched his eyes. Tears were rolling down his burning cheeks, alight with a fiery glow, as he answered. “You see me”.

He put his arms around Ty, then, and held him tightly. More tightly than he’d ever held anyone, except for that one time on the London Institute’s roof.

That’s it. That’s the end of my short fan fiction about Kit and Ty’s reunion. The first fan fiction I ever wrote. Although I have a dozen other scenarii in my head of their reunion (yep I am definitely obsessed with them), I don’t believe I’ll write any of them. I just needed to get this one out of my system. I will find other coping mechanisms to deal with Kit and Ty’s absence, while I wait for The Wicked Powers to come out.

Also, my native language is French, and I had trouble sometimes finding the right words. It took a bit of energy.
