"Farmhouse oak"? Analysis of Casio's new G-Shock GA-2100-1A transformation
The G-Shock GA-2100 launched by Casio in August 2019 can be said to be eye-catching. Specifically, this watch still continues the very solid design of the Casio G-shock series, but has made many "modern" changes. For example, the most surprising thing is the octagonal bezel design. Which is the most famous watch with this shape? Most cousins should smile knowingly, it must be AP! But AP's Royal Oak is of course great in design, workmanship, and storytelling, but the price is also great. For many friends, it is not suitable as a watch for daily wear. And the price of this new Casio watch at the thousand yuan level is quite reliable. No wonder many cousins affectionately call it "farm oak tree": But don't be fooled by the simple appearance of this watch. In fact, Casio has worked very hard this time. One of the major design innovations is the continuation of the "digital" + "analog" dual clock design of Casio's mid-to-high-end models in recent years. In the lower right part of the dial, there is a multi-function digital display, which displays the second hand and date calendar every day. It can also be used to configure the alarm clock and display some working status. The traditional analog display includes hours, minutes, and a week calendar. In this way, the disk partition looks very intuitive, taking into account the overall sense of functionality and consistency. It shows Casio's excellent design ability in this category. In addition to this relatively traditional black background and white needle design, Casio also provides an "all black" all black design, which is more low-key overall and is suitable for friends who like this design style. In addition to the unique design of the dial, this time Casio also made a certain "slimming" design for this watch. We know that Casio's G-shock series, as a military-grade hard-core watch, has always had a relatively large and rough design route. It is often a large dial design of 46mm and 48mm. The advantage of this is that it can be worn with gloves, or worn over a compression garment while cycling. But on the contrary, if it is worn in school or office every day, it will be a little exaggerated. So this time Casio chose the "Carbon Core Guard" process on the farm oak tree, which is the so-called "carbon fiber core" technology. By using liquid synthetic resin material with carbon fiber elements on the inside of the watch, it achieves great hardness and fit after cooling. While reducing the size of the bezel, it still meets G-shock’s stringent drop-proof, shock-proof, and waterproof standards. . In addition to this carbon fiber core, there are still Casio's signature plastic shells and large buttons with good feedback performance. That's right, it's still a familiar formula and a familiar taste.

G-Shock/Baby-G Catalog (US Market) from the 90s
Here’s an old G-Shock catalog that I got hold of recently. I can’t find the year printed anywhere on it but I believe this catalog is from anywhere between 1996-1998. - yeomanseiko.com

—G-Shock DW-6600 revival model — part of the Vintage Product Series, which also includes the GA-400PC-8A. The series is inspired by the colours of electronic devices and computers from the 1970s and 1980s. The colours of the DW-6600PC-5 remind me of the Apple II and Commodore 64 home computers, and the green-tinted LCD display is reminiscent of the green monochrome CRT displays of the time. ⌚️
