Sightings – S1E09 – Cash-Landrum Case – 1992
“In recent years there’s been a marked increase in the number of people who claim to have had contact with alien beings. Some of them tell terrifying stories of abuse, and claim to have real physical scars from close encounters they found terrifying…”
“But the movies we love to laugh at have nothing to do with reality. Reality is a woman named Vickie Landrum.”
“The Cash-Landrum case is a very significant case, because we have a situation where we had a very large flying machine that actually left marks on the road...that left burns on the trees, that left burns on the people, that changed their physiology...it’s a composite of many UFO cases rolled into one, with very horrifying results…”
“The government wanted to experiment on something, and they’ve taken the lives of people to do it.”
“Our system is not set up to explain the unexplainable. People all over this country are mysteriously injured...Vickie Landrum believes some of them have met with deadly alien forces...”
Sightings hits another famous UFO case, and another segment with a very grim tone. The Cash-Landrum case is famous for being a UFO case that left behind physical traces - namely, by causing Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum life-long health problems. Skeptics dispute this: while the problems they suffered were no doubt real, there's a major issue - namely, there's no proof that they were healthy before the supposed incident. Were they the victims of a UFO/government experiment, or were their problems pre-existing and unrelated? Betty Cash died in 1998 and Vickie Landrum died in 2007, without the truth ever becoming clear.
This segment also has a very bizarre intro where he talks about how aliens are primarily portrayed as figures of comedy while the names of alien movies pop up on screen.

the cash-landrum ufo sighting
i skimmed the article and to my understanding, 3 people from Texas (two women in their 50s, Cash and Landrum, and Landrum's grandson, 7) saw a UFO while on a drive home.
later, all 3 were reportedly experiencing "nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, a burning sensation in the eyes, and a feeling of suffering sunburn", though Cash reportedly experienced these to a worse degree. in january 1981, Cash was hospitalised twice for an inability to walk and losing large patches of skin and hair. the Landrums were far better off but still ill, reportedly suffering hair loss, skin sores, and lingering weakness.
some guy named brad sparks, whom is mentioned once in the article so i dont know his credentials here, suggested that Cash, who was treated for radiation poisoning, actually had severe chemical poisoning, "presumably by aerosol".
the women pursued legal action against the US govt for their sicknesses in 1981, and courts ruled the US govt had no ownership of such a UFO, and that no military personell had conducted helicopters at the time, and therefore the US govt was not liable.
both women later died, with Cash dying in 1998, and Landrum dying in 2007.
in 2018, author and skeptic Bryan Dunning discovered that Cash's doctor's notes attributed her hair loss to alopecia aerata, suspecting the other symptoms could be contributed to an illness prior to the incident and noting that Landrum's only documented problem was a cataract in one eye.
the overall article is a really interesting read and i only covered the main beats here. check it out!
The authorities were helping poor rural communities after a disaster but the people had been replaced by human looking creatures.
Only one person noticed this but nobody believed him and he was locked away in a mental institution.

h1 1 was cur1ous, what 1nsp1red your song "I saw something three years ago in an obscure part of the winema national forest"? 1t's one of my favor1te songs and 1'm very 1ntr1gued
omg omg this is so nice omg
so like with a lot of my poetry/songs its kinda hard to explain, at least without sounding like a doofus
but like the main thing is it’s sorta exploring ideas of trust and belief, as applied to romantic relationships and spirituality, as well as to things like ufos and bigfoot and such. it’s full of references to specific sightings (the patterson–gimlin film, the mcminnville photographs, the cash-landrum incident), and multi layered metaphor built on these specific incidents to explore those larger ideas, at least i hope lol what writer can accurately predict what will land
i dont actually remember what inspired it, but i do know i composed the majority of it in one frantic writing session after waking up in the middle of the night, and then spent the next day poring over all my old ufo and cryptid books to make sure all the references were correct lol
#should i tag this something??#ive Never had anyone interact with my songs like this idk lmao#this is all very exciting thank u#rory is a musician#<- there now i have a tag for all my music related things

The Cash-Landrum Incident was a 1980s UFO case. On December 29th 1980, Betty Cash, her friend Vickie Landrum and her grandson Colby, were driving when they spotted a light above the trees. The women thought it was a regular aircraft and carried on. A few minutes later they saw the light again in front of the car and nearly blinding them with the light it emitted. The object was diamond shaped, and the car was stopped in fear that it would be burned. The women went out to examine the object, leaving a horrified Colby in the backseat. The women claimed that the object emitted a heat that made the car's exterior feel like it was sitting in the sun for quite sometime. Vickie pressed her hand into the dashboard and left a handprint, that was later seen as proof of the encounter. The object was soon surrounded by helicopters, and the women drove off. When they returned home, they all experienced nausea and vomiting, and burning sensations. The symptoms worsen over the days, to the point of painful blisters and hospital stays. The women took legal action against the government, asking for them to compensate for their injuries. However the government said they had no knowledge of a diamond shaped object and the case was dismissed.

THE CASH-LANDRUM INCIDENT - On the night of December 29, 1980 - while driving on a rural, tree-lined road near Huffman, Texas - two women and a young boy (Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum, and Colby Landrum) claim to have encountered a fiery, diamond-shaped UFO surrounded by (or, perhaps, being escorted by) a small fleet of military helicopters. The “water tower-sized” object was, reportedly, belching out heat and flames as it crossed in front of their path on the road - causing them to stop their vehicle out of fear for their lives. In the days, months, and years following the famous “Cash-Landrum Incident” - an encounter event that gained the attention of tabloid media, UFO TV shows, and the popular press - the trio claimed that they suffered physical effects and illnesses as a result of possible “radiation exposure.” The “victims” even unsuccessfully sued the U.S. Government/Military for damages in civil court, but were dismissed due to the lack of any proof that the Government/Military operated the “craft” or was at fault for any injuries. Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum have since passed away after a lifetime of ailments that they attributed to their roadside encounter. Colby Landrum, now an adult, still says the events of that night were true. What really happened on the road that evening - if anything - continues to remain a mystery. Was this a “real” (and dangerous) encounter with a UFO from “Elsewhere?” Or was this, perhaps, some sort of military experiment (or accident) gone horribly out of control? Or, maybe, this was all just an elaborate hoax told for gain and notoriety, as some skeptics contend? Numerous questions abound in this intriguing case, which is considered by many researchers to be one of the “Best Cases in UFO Lore.” Research into this noted case continues unto this day, with the hopes of, one day, finding answers (and holding those accountable) to the Truth behind this (maybe, “tragic”) Close Encounter.    The 2017 disclosure of the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) renewed interest in the US government’s post-Project Blue Book investigations of UFOs. The Cash-Landrum incident of December 29, 1980, occurred about ten years after the Air Force study of UFOs came to an official close. Documents prove that there was an official interest in the Cash-Landrum case, so it provides a perfect subject to use in a search for evidence of further UFO investigations by government agencies.

UFOs; The Cash-Landrum Incident
UFOs; The Cash-Landrum Incident
Betty Cash owned a diner in Dayton, Texas just northeast of Houston. On December 29, 1980, Cash, Vickie Landrum (a waitress at her diner) and Vickie’s 7-year-old grandson Colby went looking for a bingo parlor but found the three in the area closed. After grabbing dinner at a restaurant, the trio headed home along FM 1485 through the Piney Woods. It was a little after 9:00pm as they…

The Cash-Landrum Incident part 4 Landrum telephoned a number of U.S. government agencies and officials about the encounter. When she telephoned NASA, she was steered toward NASA aerospace engineer John Schuessler, long interested in UFOs. With some associates from civilian UFO research group MUFON, Schuessler began research on the case, and later wrote articles and a book on the subject. Astronomer Allan Hendry of CUFOS also briefly investigated the Cash-Landrum case. Due to the Chinook helicopters' presence, the witnesses presumed that at least one branch of the United States Armed Forces witnessed the object, if they were not escorting or pursuing it. However, investigators could find no evidence linking the helicopters with any branch of the military. In 1982, Lt. Col. George Sarran of the Department of the Army Inspector General began the only thorough formal governmental investigation into the supposed UFO encounter. He could not find any evidence that the helicopters the witnesses claimed to have seen belonged to the U.S. Armed Forces. Sarran stated that "Ms. Landrum and Ms. Cash were credible … the policeman and his wife [who claimed to have seen 12 helicopters near the UFO encounter site] were also credible witnesses. There was no perception that anyone was trying to exaggerate the truth." Eventually, Cash and Landrum contacted their U.S. Senators, Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower, who suggested that the witnesses file a complaint with the Judge Advocate Claims office at Bergstrom Air Force Base. In August 1981, Cash, Landrum, and Colby were interviewed at length by personnel at Bergstrom Air Force Base, and were told that they should hire a lawyer, and seek financial compensation for their injuries. With attorney Peter Gersten taking on the case pro bono, the case wound its way through the U.S. Courts for several years. Cash and Landrum sued the U.S government for $20 million. #destroytheday
