How many engines have drivers already used in the 2023 season?
How many engines have drivers already used in the 2023 season? By Balazs Szabo on 28 Jun 2023, 13:13 With only eight grands prix completed and a further fourteen rounds to run, several drivers find themselves on the verge of grid penalties for exceeding their power unit allocation. F1Technical’s senior journalist Balázs Szabó takes a look on the current state of the power unit usage. The current generation of F1 power units features seven different elements: the internal combustion engine (ICE), motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H), motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), turbocharger, energy store (ES), control electronics (CE) and exhaust. Over the course of the 2023 season, a driver may use no more than four ICEs, MGU-Hs, MGU-Ks and turbochargers, two energy stores and control electronics, and eight of each of the four elements that make up a set of exhaust systems. Following Ferrari’s early season reliability problems with an electrical element in its Formula 1 power unit, Charles Leclerc became the first driver to get a grid penalty in 2023 F1 season. The Monegasque retired from the season opener in Bahrain while running third, although he already had a precautionary change of control electronics, and the energy store (battery), after qualifying because an issue was noticed during a fire-up on Sunday morning. Since then, Leclerc has had a few changes, most recently at the Spanish Grand Prix where he finished second to last in the qualifying session which prompted Ferrari to add new elements to his pool. The Monegasque has exceeded his allocation of energy stores and control electronics and has no more fresh internal engine to use in the remainder of the season. Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has also already exceeded his allocation of ES and CE. The control electronics and the energy stores have proved to be the most critical elements so far with several drivers finding themselves on the verge of exceeding their allocation, including Carlos Sainz, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, Logan Sargeant. Gasly, Norris Albon and Yuki Tsunoda also find themselves on the verge of possible further penalties in terms of internal combustion engines, turbocharger, MGU-H, MGU-K. Interestingly, Norris has already used five exhaust systems during the opening phase of the season with the Briton As for the gearboxes, drivers are also limited in the number of gearbox units for the 2023 F1 season. Restricted-number components are components that make up the gearbox, split between the gearbox case and cassette, and the gearbox driveline, gear change components and auxiliary components. Drivers can use up to four gearbox cases and cassettes and four gearbox drivelines and auxiliary components. Drivers will earn a grid-drop penalty if they exceed the gearbox allocation. The first time the allocation of either of the components is exceeded, a five-place grid penalty will be dished out, with the same number applying for repeat offences. Following the opening eight grands prix, gearboxes look set to become a critical part as well as several drivers have already used more than two gearbox units including runaway championship leader Max Verstappen, Leclerc, Ocon, Gasly and Kevin Magnussen. Overall, Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu and Magnussen find themselves in the most comfortable situation regarding their power unit allocation with all of them having plenty of fresh units for the remaining fourteen races. via F1Technical.net . Sporting: Gasly on the verge of penalties after latest engine woes
Sporting: Gasly on the verge of penalties after latest engine woes By Balazs Szabo on 18 Jun 2023, 13:07 Following his engine woes at the opening practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, Alpine racer Pierre Gasly finds himself on the verge of engine penailties later on in the session. F1Technical’s Balázs Szabó reports on the power unit usage at the Canadian Grand Prix. The current generation of F1 power units feature seven different elements: the internal combustion engine (ICE), motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H), motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), turbocharger, energy store (ES), control electronics (CE) and exhaust. Over the course of the 2023 season, a driver may use no more than four ICEs, MGU-Hs, MGU-Ks and turbochargers, two energy stores and control electronics, and eight of each of the four elements that make up a set of exhaust systems. After stopping on track in Free Practice One, Alpine installed a fresh internal combustion engine, turbocharger, motor-generator-heat, motor-generator-kinetic with all elements being his last permitted unit for the remainder of the season. The situation puts Gasly on the verge of engine penalties even if he is permitted to use older parts and combine them freely. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, AlphaTauri racer Yuki Tsunoda and Williams driver Alexander Albon have also received a fresh ICE with all of them started to use their third engine. Furthermore, Tsunoda and Albon will compete with a fresh turbocharger, motor generator unit – heat and motor-genetor – kincetic. Gasly, Tsunoda and the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have also received a new exhaust system. As for the gearboxes, drivers are also limited in the number of gearbox units for the 2023 F1 season. Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg will race at today’s Canadian Grand Prix with a fresh gearbox case, cassette and a new gearbox driveline, gear change and auxiliary components. All three drivers have used two units from both gearbox elements up to the Montreal race weekend, meaning that they still have one fresh unit to use in the remainder of the 2023 F1 season. via F1Technical.net . Verstappen uses his last fresh gearbox at the Hungaroring Technical news
Verstappen uses his last fresh gearbox at the Hungaroring – Technical news By Balazs Szabo on 30 Jul 2022, 11:00 Reigning world champion Max Verstappen will complete the Hungarian Grand Prix with his fourth and final gearbox after Red Bull opted for a change at the last round before the field commences its three-week summer break. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen will complete the Hungarian Grand Prix with his fourth and final gearbox after Red Bull opted for a change at the last round before the field commences its three-week summer break. Formula One has changed the rules regarding how drivers can use gearboxes throughout the season. The 2022 rules split the gearboxes into two parts: casing & cassette and the internal components. The new rules enforce a four casing and cassette limit on the cars taking part in the championship and the same numerical limit will be imposed on the components within the gearbox cassette itself. This means that every driver is only permitted four 'gearboxes' for the season, and can pick and choose from that pool of four to get through the season. Like the power unit rules, once a driver requires more than four casings or internal components, a five-place penalty will be imposed. Championship runaway leader Verstappen received his fourth and last gearbox at Budapest – both a fresh gearbox case and a fresh gearbox driveline. It means he needs to complete the last part of the championship by alternating his previous ones if he wants to avoids a grid-drop penalty. However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko indicated that the Dutchman might exceed his allocation of fresh power units which would make it logical to install a fifth gearbox in to his car. A fifth gearbox would result in a grid-drop penalty, but should Verstappen exceed his allocation of power units and use a fifth gearbox at the same event, he would start from the back of the grid anyway. Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel will also take part at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix with a fresh gearbox, albeit it is only his third unit, meaning he still has one more fresh unit at his disposal for the remainder of the current season. As far as the power units are concerned, there is only one single change with McLaren’s Lando Norris taking on a new exhaust system. Since last year, the power units consists of seven parts: internal combustion engine, turbocharger, motor generator unit – heat, motor generator unit – kinetic, energy store, control electronics with the exhaust system having been added to this list last year. During the current season drivers are allowed to use 3 ICE, 3 TC, 3 MGU-H, 3 MGU-K, 2 ES, 2 CE and 8 EX without penalty. When the use exceeds these amounts of power unit elements the driver of that car will receive grid penalties in the following race. The Bristol-born McLaren racer has used three exhaust systems so far, meaning that he still has four more unit for the last nine races of the season. In terms of exhaust system, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc might face troubles later on in the season as he has already used seven units with only one fresh remaining for him. However, Ferrari might alter his previous ones and he could take new one when he serves further grid-drop penalties when taking new power unit elements after the summer break. via F1Technical.net .
