Oliver and I went to the brewery tonight. He heard about the newest beer, a “cascadian dark ale/black IPA” and begged me to go (and please not take Sulley or Ella).
By myself, I can only handle one of our dogs at a time. Ella went last time, Sulley the time before that. So I told O-Dog he was indeed my favorite, and that’s why I was bringing him. Ella and Sulley split a Kraft single as their reward for staying home.
That black IPA was excellent. Usually I don’t order two of the same beer in a given night, because I like variety. Tonight though my second one was an identical twin of the first.
In the brewery’s back room had a beer pong tournament going on. Oliver and I stopped to watch. We saw another tri-color minnie Aussie.
Beer pong was before my time. I stayed to watch a bit this evening. Not knowing beer pong in college didn’t seem to negatively affect my life. It seemed rather dumb now, though maybe I didn’t understand the rules.
I wasn’t at all hungry when I got to the brewery. But, dang, the food truck’s brisket mac and cheese, expensive as it was, really called to me. However I had already eaten dinner, so I saved room for beer.
Oh good grief! I didn’t charge my phone today. Being near single percentage digits is making me uneasy. Also, I forgot my backup battery pack, as well as my EDC flashlight. The Boy Scouts would certainly kick me out tonight.

Available in all markets in six-packs Firestone Walker Brewing announces the return of Wookie Jack Black IPA.
https://bit.ly/3YAM2rJ image courtesy Firestone Walker Brewing Company Press Release Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker’s mythic Wookey Jack is back for a limited seasonal release. Born more than a dozen years ago, Wookey Jack (8.3%) is a Black Rye IPA whose legend continues to grow. This latest edition is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in six pack (12-ounce can) and draft formats for a limited time, adding to the lore of this three-time gold medalist at the Great American Beer Festival. “Wookey Jack has a hardcore following and we get asked about it all the time,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It’s a beer for those in the know and those who want to discover something different. Everyone loves the visual trick of Wookey Jack—it’s as black as a stout but drinks like an IPA.” The latest edition of Wookey Jack remains faithful to the original recipe, which includes loads of pearled dark malts with rye adding a rustic grain element. The hops are sticky Citra and dank, pungent Amarillo, both of which are incorporated into a massive dry-hop regimen. As always, the brewing team claims to have incorporated a bit of “Wookey Dust” as well. Wookey Jack now reaffirms its title Firestone Walker’s wooliest IPA, offering big, toasty malted rye flavors with a balanced bite on the finish. It is, in Brynildson’s words, “gnarly on the outside, yet refined on the inside.”   Origin Story Wookey Jack was first brewed in 2012 as Firestone Walker’s riff on the emerging Black IPA style. Wookey Jack came into the world at a time when Cascadian Dark Ales were starting to storm into California from the Pacific Northwest. Also known as Black IPAs, these beers brought a unique regional expression to the exploding IPA genre.  With Black Rye IPAs gaining a foothold, Brynildson decided to put his own stamp on the style, adding rye malt to bring a spicy, rustic element to the beer he would call Wookey Jack. It was an instant hit that would spawn many imitators. After later going on hiatus, Wookey Jack has re-emerged in recent years as a seasonal release.  “It’s a beer that just seems right for fall and winter,” Brynildson said. “The Wookey never dies—it just hibernates.” # # # Founded in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker, Firestone Walker is a second-generation, family-led brewery based on California’s Central Coast. Helmed by highly decorated Brewmaster Matt Brynildson, Firestone Walker's main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio including 805, California's #1 craft beer brand; Mind Haze, a top 5 national hazy IPA; and Cali Squeeze, one of the nation's fastest-growing beer brands. The Firestone brand family also includes iconic beers such as DBA, Union Jack, and Pivo Pils, as well as the storied Vintage Series of barrel-aged strong ales led by Parabola. As a California beer company, Firestone Walker also has two additional locations: the Barrelworks wild ale cellar in Santa Barbara County and the Propagator R&D brewhouse in Venice. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine. National American Beer Day đŸ»
Brewing beer in America begins long before Europeans arrived since Native Americans brewed beer from a variety of ingredients. They used corn, birch sap, and water to ferment their beverage. Then when the first colonists arrived in Virginia, they began combining their brewing traditions with the supplies at hand - that included corn, too. Since then, brewing and brewers became a principal occupation in the colonies.
More than 2,100 breweries are manufacturing beer in the United States. They range in size from industry giants to brewpubs and microbreweries.
Beer styles originating in the United States include: American pale ale, Pennsylvania porter, American IPA steam beer, amber ale, cream ale, Cascadian dark ale.

Brew Review - Ethereal Void by Unseen Creatures
Oh my Cascadian Ale, how I have missed you. They have long since fallen from popularity, but I was incredibly happy when the Cascadian, or Black IPA, ruled the roost. Okay, it never truly ruled, but it was popular enough to where it was available most places you wanted to find a quality beer. It’s a really wonderful style, pairing richly dark roasted malts with the amped up bitterness of an

Number of the Beast
6.66% ABV, 66.6 IBUS, Dark Thoughts is a wicked brew.
I’ve never been entirely sold on Black IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale, the premise always seemed a little silly. A mix of stout and IPA? Who asked for that? But it’s held on as a style for a reason, that peculiar blend can be very tasty.
Dark Thoughts smells like oranges and burnt wood. It’s not smoky. It’s like peeling a tangerine sitting near last nights campfire. It’s fruity upfront with an ashy finish. It sounds weird, but it is really good.

Russell Brewing - John Mitchell Signature Cascadian Dark Ale
RUSSELL BREWING - JOHN MITCHELL SIGNATURE CASCADIAN DARK ALE REVIEW By @BeerSeekers Recently, there was big news in the BC craft beer community around the 40th Anniversary of the origin of craft beer in Canada. For the occasion, a special collaboration tribute beer was organized at Surrey’s @Russell_Beer. This beer isn't just for fun; it's also a fundraiser for the John Mitchell Legacy Endowed Scholarship, open to students in the @KPUBrew program at BC’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). The BeerSeekers experienced the beverage from the can; on tap at the brewery; in a growler; and best of all, in a cask at the official launch of the beer. In this review we’ll submit our own thoughts on this historic beverage.

(Note: This is a modified version of a piece I wrote for the Stormcloud Brewing Co. mug club members.)
Stormcloud opened the summer after I got my first job in the brewing industry, and I was just beginning to develop my craft beer palate. At the time, Brian’s delicious brews definitely contributed to my love of Belgian-style beers, and many other beer styles as well. Stormcloud was the first

Vader (Gilgamesh)
Tumblr media
Brewery : Gilgamesh Beer : Vader Style : American Black Ale / Black Ale / Black IPA / Cascadian Dark Ale Variance : Brewed with Governor’s Cup Coffee
8 / 10
I’m not sure if you were a fan of Boy Meets World when you were younger but there was a jolly fat (eventually famous) character in the show named Frankie Stecchino. Basically Frankie was a huge pussy and wanted to grow up to be a poet but his dad was no other than Leon Allen White AKA Vader. If you don’t know who Vader is, your childhood probably sucked because he was a big and bad ass wrestler who wore a red mask and finished his opponents with none other than the Vader Bomb. For as bad-ass as he was, this beer stays right up there with him with it’s super interesting flavors and drinkability. This has a nice floral hop start to it with some brightness and bitterness before some smoke and coffee mix in with some delicious roasty-ness towards the middle before ending with more floral hop bitterness to close. The only thing that sucks about this beer is that it’s the last Gilgamesh beer I have for now to review but at least it is a great way to end things. When it comes to black IPAs, this is definitely an interesting take on the style even if the coffee isn’t necessarily as prominent as I was hoping it would be. If you want this to be your first venture into the darker side of IPAs I’d say it’s a good choice because even though there are some bold flavors here, they all blend together nicely enough to make this super sessionable. For you bastard drinking crew members, pick this up and Vader Bomb it down your throat because it’s definitely worth a few bucks and your time. Cheers!

Dark Ale Two-fer: Absolute Horizon CDA (Bomber Brewing) / The Obsidian Dagger IPA Noire (Dead Frog Brewery)
While the swirling chaos featured on the label of Bomber Brewing’s Absolute Horizon Cascadian Dark Ale may look somewhat ominous, this hearty brew draws you in with dark roasted malts and a choice variety of hops, swirling together rich notes of pine and tobacco along with an earthy bitterness. Add to this an awesome label packed with imagery that includes a TARDIS and a TIE Fighter (among other visual treats) and you have the perfect beverage for both beer and pop culture fans to geek out over.
The Obsidian Dagger IPA Noire comes from Dead Frog Brewery, home of their Super Fearless Imperial IPA, along with one of my recent entries, the award-winning Nutty Uncle Peanut Butter Stout. Dead Frog’s take on this style is kicks in hard from the first mouthful with a thick hoppy bite of flavour, bursting with notes of chocolate and caramel along with a spicy, bitter, roasted edge that stays around long after the bottle has been emptied and enjoyed.
