OTD in Music History: Important French Pianist Robert Marcel Casadesus (1899 - 1972) is born in Paris. One of the greatest pianists of his generation, Casadesus was born into a very musical family and undertook studies at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Diemer (1843 - 1919) from a young age, earning a "Premier Prix" ("First Prize") in 1913. After graduating, he began touring widely throughout Europe and America, and from 1935 on he also held a professorship at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau. (Casadesus and his family spent WWII living in the United States, where they maintained a home in Princeton, New Jersey. Albert Einstein lived nearby, and the two men enjoyed playing Mozart violin sonatas together on occasion.) In the early 1920's, Casadesus also collaborated with composer, conductor, and pianist Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937) on a project to create piano rolls of a number of Ravel's original compositions. Casadesus was one of Ravel's favorite interpreters, and he and Ravel actually shared a concert platform on a number of occasions -- one example can be seen here: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpg42-WO7zt/ A product of the "French" school of 19th Century pianism, Casadesus always played with a classical restraint and a delicate approach to both melody and line. Perhaps not surprisingly, he was particularly admired as an interpreter of the music of W.A. Mozart (1756 - 1791). He also left behind a landmark set of the complete piano music of Ravel, for which he was awarded both the "Grand Prix de l'Academie Charles Cros" and the "Grand Prix de l'Academie du Disque." Sits through horror movies and weird foreign films with you. He didn’t like it at first but he came around and started sourcing out movies he’d think you like.

You taught him how to make flower crowns and now he makes them all the time. He likes to give them to Karen.

When he sees something off-putting or creepy he will immediately take a picture and send it to you.

He likes to go for walks in the forest with you, you guys will look for bugs and pick them up or make them houses of leaves and twigs.

He’ll help you wash the skulls/bones you find.

Never really minded that you were weird, he approached you first because he thought you were hot.

He loves when you play with his hair and tie little braids into it.

You guys tried to recreate The Blair Witch Project but failed miserably when you actually got lost in the woods.

You’ll meet up at the graveyard and just sit in the grass while you talk about ghosts and ghouls. Sometimes you’ll walk around and stop at a specific grave and guess how they died.

Generally goes along with whatever you want to do.

Reader- “Can we go down to the riverbank to pickup fish heads and then eat out their eyes?”

Craig- “Yeah, sure.”

He’ll just watch you roll around in the mud or set little twig piles on fire, he won’t join in but he also won’t interfere.

You’ll talk to Stripe, not in the baby voice that people usually use to talk to animals but your tone will be dead serious like you’re talking to a grown adult.

The two of you will watch true crime documentaries together.

He’ll fuck up anyone who calls you weird or a freak.

When you’re out in public, you’ll point someone out and predict how they’re going to die.

There’s nothing you can do that’ll shock him, he’s unfazed by everything that you say.

Sometimes gets concerned with you around Stripe.

You’ll disappear for hours at a time and he’ll get worried, sending you a million texts then you’ll randomly show up at his door soaking wet or covered in dirt with no warning.

Craig- “Where have you been? You weren’t answering my texts.”

#1124: Henri and Marius Casadesus were a violist and violinist (resp.) who wrote pieces of music and attributed them to popular composers. Marius claimed to have found the "Adélaïde Concerto" manuscript by Mozart in 1931 and re-orchestrated and performed it. it was given a place in Köchel (the standard catalogue of the aforementioned pianist's works) and recorded by Yehudi Menuhin, a renowned player. when Marius failed to present the autograph he stumbled upon, and scholars realised that Mr Wolfgang was not in Versailles at the date claimed on the original, suspicions arose, and in a 1977 copyright court case, Marius admitted to having penned it. similarly, Henri devised concertos accreditted to CPE Bach, JC of the same family, GF Handel and Boccherini. from the beginning people supposed that they could have been by Henri and he never denied it. the concerti are still often referred to in double-barrel between the two alleged artists.

Marius said the trick (called by some "a hoax ala Kreisler" (another famous and similar scandalist who pulled off Vivaldi, Corelli and others)) was almost an accident: he was trying out some tunes in a classical style ready to modernise, but noticed that they sounded like Amadeus. in the hearing, he held that he staged them to his friends and asked what it sounded like - everyone insisted that it was by he who i just named. so he rolled with it.

the reason i found this was because i'm playing one of Henri's concertos and i wondered why some albums listed Henri Casadesus while others listed the more well-known London composer. tbh it's much better than anything else the latter could have dreamed of.
