Okay, so obviously, the blurry footage that exists of Windward Circle, in addition to the CA stuff from “Here Comes The Son,” is a little cringey and doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense. (How and why DOES Jess know how to skateboard that well????? Why is everyone in California inexplicably an asshole to him?)

That being said, I am picking up on threads of what Windward Circle could have been had the network picked it up. Aside from the fact that shooting on location in Venice was never a feasible option, the show would have needed to set an entirely different tone from Gilmore Girls proper to actually succeed. Like, you can’t put Jess and Jimmy into a Rory and Lorelai look-a-like contest and expect an audience to respond in the same way. In other words, you can’t just make Gilmore Girls with “less skirts.”

The meat of GG is the evolution of their close mother/daughter friendship. I just can’t imagine Jimmy and Jess in the same light or situations. It would look a lot more like: the fight on the boardwalk AND the scene where they meet at the diner: yelling/fighting or uncomfortable silence.

Now, I would find THIS sort of show compelling, if ASP had struck the right tone, setting, and back-and-forth between them (i.e. turn down the quirk and amp up the edge). I am intrigued by the idea of Jess the New Yorker finding himself in Southern California with his absentee father and his new, pseudo-family. However, I also wonder how Jess the Character would have carried a show, considering just how often he internalizes things and how little he engages with most people. The draw of GG is the push-and-pull. It’s both the said AND unsaid from Lorelai, Rory, and their family and friends. How would monosyllabic Jess play against Sasha, Lily, Jimmy, etc.? How would he fit into a SoCal world?

the biggest issue with a gilmore girls spn au is that dean winchester is like if you split luke and lorelai in half and made them one person. the second biggest is that cas is obviously neither of them, but he really REALLY isn’t lorelai so i had to make him luke, but the background of shitty rich parents you can’t help but love fits him so much better and the background of dead dad he can’t let go of + secret love child he never knew about fits dean so much better. alas.

one of the funniest documents on my google docs is gilmore girls but the names have all been changed to supernatural characters. like i copy pasted tons and tons of scripts of episodes of gilmore girls to a google doc then edited them (mostly just names and pronouns, only the Occasional story modification like sam being dean’s brother rather than son and lisa just being an almost rather than an absent father). literally nothing in this world is funnier than imagining john winchester reciting emily gilmore’s lines.

buddie: you know this one HAS to be MAKES SENSE AND COMPELS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen man, the will? the coparenting? it's eddie's house, i'm not a guest? the shooting??? the grocery store fight during the law suit? the way they match each other's freak? the way they're genuinely best friends and we can see why they get along so well but also they do really unhinged irrational things when they think the other one is dying? they make sense! and they have so many fascinating things going on that compel me too! i think another thing i love about them is that if they ever become canon, they'll be the only long-term will-they-won't-they ship in the show. hen and karen were already established, bobby and athena got together and solidified things pretty quick, and while chim and maddie had more ups and downs they still met each other, liked each other, and started seeing each other within the same season. shows these days don't trust that they're going to make it multiple seasons, so i feel like they have been speed running romances these days rather than drawing them out for multiple seasons. PLUS, due to the way that modern tv is structured to be more short form with renewals up in the air, if buddie ever becomes canon it'll be arguably the first and maybe last gay ship to be given the will-they-won't-they-partners-in-a-network-tv-show treatment that couples like booth/brennan (bones), mulder/scully (x-files), and luke/lorelai (gilmore girls) got. spn got close to this, but did it in such a homophobic way and then didn't actually make it explicitly canon on both ends, just had cas confess and die while dean shed a few tears. with more and more tv shows getting 8 episodes a season and getting cancelled randomly, i'm not sure tv is in a format that will cater to something like that again. i feel like shows with canon gay couples feel the need to speed run the process now (tk and carlos in lone star, lucy and whistler in ncis hawaii), so from a narrative tv format perspective buddie really appeals to me in that way, on top of the things that make them interesting characters and a compelling ship.

at the crux of it though, i really really love co-parents to lovers/single parent-best friend aus. that's actually one of my favorite tropes, so that's also a big reason that buddie appeals to me lol

Ember was born to Faith and Louis Wilder, who called a small trailer home to themselves and their three children. Ember was the youngest of the three, worrying that she was a burden to the ever-growing family, another mouth to feed when resources were already slim.

Despite feeling like a burden to the rest of her family, Ember always had a close relationship with her father. A daddy's girl by nature, the two were thick as thieves and he supported his little girl every step of the way.

As for her mother, when she wasn't at work -- Ember found herself competing for her attention with her two older brothers, who their mother clearly favored. However, this gave her more motivation to keep her head down and put her everything into her academics.

When she was fourteen, she came home to find a note on her bed letting her know that her father had left her behind with the rest of their family and he had no intention of coming back. Papers were filed through his lawyer, and there was little else for the family in Georgia. It was an impulsive decision, but with her brothers now out of the house -- Ember and her mother relocated across the country to Southern California.

It was here where she met Chase Williams -- who she never thought would give her a moments notice. And yet, she did. Ember was a loner, kept to herself as she struggled to make friends with the kids who had practically spent a lifetime together. She fell head over heels in love with him and for the first time, she saw a future together outside of a trailer residence and beer cans collecting in every corner. She could have a life.

College was never really in the cards for her, considering her financial situation. Her mother had nothing saved, already living paycheck to paycheck and her brothers were forced to put themselves through school. This didn't stop her from going to a trade school nearby Notre Dam and becoming a certified mechanic.

At nineteen, she found herself unexpectedly staring at a positive pregnancy test. Even if she hadn't anticipated it, wondering if she was ever meant for motherhood -- she had every hope that she could give her daughter the best possible life that she could.

She remembers getting to hold her daughter like it was yesterday. She was absolutely perfect in every possible way. However, everything would soon change when one moment, the happy family were driving home and suddenly -- she was back in the hospital.

When Chase told her that their daughter had died in the crash -- something in her broke. It opened up and it felt like the universe was swallowing her whole. It didn't take long for her relationship with Chase to unravel, another casualty alongside the loss of the daughter they had brought into this world together.

For a couple years, Ember was restless. She found herself traveling all over the country -- rarely residing in the same place for much more than a year. Things were just easier on her own, evident by the way her father walked out of her life, her mother's near absence and the loss of her child + the man who she believed she would spend the rest of her life with.

This outlook turned her cold. Very little brought her joy, and she made very few friends. And while she never thought she'd return to California -- she soon found herself settling down in Aurora Bay about one year ago.

As she nears her thirties, she's begun to find some recognizable amount of stability. Things finally make sense. While she once lived in Ocean Crest, she relocated to Seabrook Quarter about four months ago and has lived there ever since.

Two weeks ago, she received an e-mail from a man who claimed to be her father, and that there was more to the story about the reason why he really left so suddenly. However, Ember isn't quite sure if she wants to hear it. Thus, she's found herself ignoring his messages. However, the more that come in, it's getting harder and harder for her to resist writing a response...

𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒.

If there's anything that's been noticeable about Ember's grieving process, denial is a consistent trait. She's been avoiding the loss of their child ever since it happened as a form of self-preservation.

She's had very little consistency when it comes to her romantic life or friendships, that is, until she arrived in Aurora Bay. While being back in California has triggered a lot of old memories, she's found herself returning to some sense of normalcy.

For some reason, Ember is made deeply uncomfortable by being alone in her house for too long. Thus, she can often be found at the bars after work, avoiding the inevitable journey home.

A fan of the ripped jeans, flannel shirt and sneakers combo. A fan of denim in general. However, she practically turns into a different person on nights out.

Castiel blinks.

His alarm goes off at six forty-five am precisely, tearing without warning into an unpleasant electronic war cry at a decibel that startles him straight into wide-eyed, heart-pounding wakefulness. Groaning, Castiel smashes the snooze button and drops back down onto his pillow with a sigh of relief. He’s still got time, and a few more minutes of shut-eye would do him a world of good after last night, he’s sure.

Just as he’s drifting back off, lulled by the familiar sounds of Claire doing her morning puttering, another alarm goes off; this time, it’s a shrill, metallic ringing from across the room – that cute red analog clock that Dorothy scored for him at a flea market a few years ago, which he mostly keeps around for show. He doesn’t remember setting it, but he figures that Past Castiel must have been trying to look after the needs of sleep-deprived Future Castiel, and so he only curses Past him out a little bit as he hauls himself up to go turn it off.

Ahhh, peace and quiet.

Squinting, Castiel gazes back at his still-warm, rumpled bed with all the ardour of a lover. He’s technically the boss – he could probably start at ten today, if he wanted. Michel would grumble of course, but then again, bitching and moaning is sort of Michel’s bread and butter, and Castiel is loathe to deprive him of his primary motivation. All he knows is that his sheets are never quite as enticingly soft as they are at seven in the morning, and that he wants nothing more than to sink back into their comforting embrace for another hour or so. So he does, pausing to text Claire before he pulls the blanket over his head.

Not ready to face the world yet! Take 20 from my wallet and get a cab to school, please. Will pick you up after. Maybe Dean’s? XOXO

Sleep rushes back in and pulls him under so quickly it might as well be a tide, and he the moon. He drifts there fitfully, just under the surface of consciousness, receiving vague impressions of colour and light and motion around him. Somewhere deep inside of himself, he registers the thought: this must be how babies feel, curled up in the womb. He chuckles, pleased with his own childish wisdom, and the vibration of it ripples outward in luminous concentric circles.

Castiel blinks.

His alarm goes off.

Actually, he realizes fairly quickly, it’s not just one alarm clock, but a multitude of them, all over his room, every size, colour, and shape that he could possibly have imagined – all of them buzzing and beeping and whirring and screaming and honking, even one blasting hard rock music at a nearly inconceivable volume.  

“What,” says Castiel, “the fuck?”

It takes him nearly ten minutes to locate all of the clocks and subdue each one by whatever means necessary, near-frantic in his urgency, his ears throbbing painfully under the assault. The last one - a cheap, dinky little thing with the dollar store sticker still on – almost proves to be his undoing; it only goes quiet when Castiel wrenches his window open and chucks it into the road, where someone in a noisy pickup truck promptly runs over it. “And good riddance!” he shouts. He winces as he slams the sash down slightly harder than he meant to, but thankfully nothing breaks.

“Claire!” He yells down as he dresses himself, scarcely bothering to look at the clothes he’s grabbing from his dresser. “I hope you find murder just as funny as that little stunt!” Castiel jogs down the stairs in his bare feet, catching a whiff of bacon as he goes. Now he’s really confused - practical joker or not, since when has Claire ever in her life cooked him breakfast? “Is it my birthday, or are you just trying to butter me up so I don’t – oh!”

“Hey baby,” says Dean, looking back over his shoulder to flash a lazy smile at Cas. His voice is rough, sleep-worn and sexy; Castiel tries not to adjust the front of his trousers too conspicuously. Dean’s wearing his thinnest, most frayed Zeppelin t-shirt, the one that’s way too stretched out at the neck, and a pair of tight red boxer briefs that Castiel belatedly recognizes as his own. “You want some coffee? It’s fresh.”

“Nnggh,” Castiel agrees through gritted teeth. He inches his way over to the coffee maker without taking his eyes off Dean, who’s back to focusing on his pan of bacon as though he hasn’t another care in the world. He pours himself a cup and takes his first sip, still staring holes into the back of Dean’s skull as though the answers to Castiel’s thousand questions might be engraved on his brain. I must be dreaming, Castiel thinks desperately. Dean is not in my kitchen. Dean is not cooking me breakfast in my own kitchen wearing my underwear right now. I have to be dreaming. Wake up, Castiel. Wake up!

At any rate, even dream-Castiel turns out not to have X-ray vision, and no matter how long he stands there watching Dean, he just won’t disappear. Eventually, he gathers up every shred of courage he can find, clears his throat, and asks, “Dean…do you mind explaining what the hell is going on?!”

“Shit,” says Dean, looking back at him again. He sighs. “I knew you were going to notice.”

“Of course I was going to notice!” Castiel splutters. “How could you possibly think I wouldn’t?”

Dean chuckles. He starts lifting cooked bacon out of the pan onto a plate lined with paper towel, then drains the grease into an empty tin can. “I swear, Cas,” he says, shaking his head, “you shouldn’t be able to taste the difference between decaf and regular coffee.”

“First of all,” Castiel spits back, “shut your filthy mouth. That is utter sacrilege, especially coming from a supposed connoisseur like yourself.” He paces over to Dean and gets right up his personal space, poking one accusing finger into the dead centre of his chest. “Second – I demand that you tell me what you’re doing here.”

“Trying to prevent future generations from getting their developing brains addled, dumbass,” Dean says. He pauses just long enough to crack a pair of eggs into the still-hot pan, then turns back to a bewildered Castiel with a shit-eating grin on his face. “God, you’re adorable when you’re pissed off, you know that? But you heard what the doctor said, sweetheart. You have to limit your daily caffeine intake, or else it could have a negative impact on the babies.”

“Sweetheart,” Castiel echoes. Suddenly, his ears are ringing again. “Babies.”

Just as suddenly, Dean is on his knees. Castiel looks down at him, only to realize that Dean’s head is dwarfed by Castiel’s enormously swollen stomach. Holy shit. Is he pregnant? “How are my little Clarence and Clarice today, anyway?” Dean coos, lifting Castiel’s shirt so that he can place a series of tender kisses around his navel. “These kung-fu fighters keep you awake all night again, Cas? You’re looking kind of out of it.”

Castiel blinks.

His alarm goes off.

It’s 9:32 AM; he’s clearly right on the edge of a mental breakdown, and more than that, he’s definitely going to be late for work.

“Oh my god,” he whispers to the ceiling.
