1980s to 1990s: we can have full on animated Broadway musicals? Wait, what do you mean animated movies can count for the Oscar’s? What do you mean now they get their own catagory because the academy still thinks their for babies? Anime and manga are taking off in the west. SWEET JESUS WHAT DRUGS ARE THE JAPANESE ON SHOWING THIS SHIT TO KIDS. But also why is it so fucking good. Maybe some of these aren’t even meant for kids? Wait We can sell toys to kids with cartoons? 2000s: oh my god, there is this one show that I really like cause it’s really well written and genuinely funny but I can’t talk about it because it’s animated and we all know cartoons are for babies right? Oh look it’s the transformers movie, look how far CGI has evolved so we can make the transformers in a movie.

2010s: holy shit I know these shows are for kids but they’re just well written and have so much meaningful things to say about the world. Wait, it’s cool to like cartoons now? They they have fandoms for this? Fuck yeah I’m in. (Enters one of the most notoriously toxic fandoms of all time) THEY HAVE GAY PEOPLE IN THESE SHOWS NOW? AND COMPLEX EMOTIONAL STORYTELLING? But lately, not only has the show has poor writing and little to no character development, but it's a bad influence on the children who watch it. Miraculous encourages sexual harassment, sexism and abuse of power. The show is encouraging the main character's behavior of stalking, stealing, home invasion and constantly gets away with it with no Any Punishments whatsoever. Ok i watched a couple episodes and i have thoughts.

First off i think it’s cool that the creator uploaded them onto archive.org (although i remember the discourse surrounding them a few years ago so i hesitate to give them any credit for anything lol).

Also the main impression i got from the show is that its format, humor style, production, visuals, etc is very similar to that of cartoons on nickelodeon/disney channel/cartoon network. Even though obviously the humor is much more adult, it’s still totally within the cadence and caliber of the humor on kids shows. That is to say, not groundbreakingly funny. Tho i did find a couple gags pretty funny.

Im sure other people have felt this, but it is definitely something that i would have been OBSESSED with around age 13 when i was still used to the generic format of kids tv but starting to get into edgier themes. This is not an insult btw, 13 year olds need entertainment too (and adults can enjoy kids/childish media obviously)

It also feels like something i would have enjoyed when i was 13 because it feels SO 2013. Like, i find it interesting that queer and leftish people enjoy it, what with all the problematique elements. Not saying anything i saw was as insufferable as south park, but it is reminding me of the south park fandom. Something something young queer people love edgy offensive humor.

Also, i do like some of the character designs a lot - the caveat being that every character design is ultimately really muddy. The voice acting + expressions felt really effective at times, but it was always dampened by me getting distracted by some mismatching marking or accessory. Like, hey this character is pretty interesting, but why is there some random fucking polygon on their shoulder. It makes their designs feel riddled with mistakes even though you know it has to be intentional. All that said, i like the wolf girl and the gay predator owl guy. Maybe them having defined species works in their favor for making the designs a little more coherent.

Also, i was going to watch a third episode but the song toward the beginning was too boring and i decided to call it there. Im sure the other songs are fine but the ones at the start of the show are ..bad. Sorry

Anyway i can see why people like it even though i personally dont. Like i get the desire for something that’s just campy and edgy, i just think the execution is too tacky for something so well produced. And i also dont think im breaking new ground with this opinion or anything.

the fact that kids content is made by adults is the biggest one. like. other adults are behind this shit. they were probably inspired by kids content too.

the idea of just dismissing kids content as "its just... kids stuff" is inherently bad because thats how we end up with shit like post-reagan deregulation cartoons of the 80s! that literally were just toy advertisements! thats bad! kids need good content made by educated adults!

"kids cartoons" are still pretty damn big in pop culture! spongebob for example is/was still, first and foremost, a kids cartoon! about a sponge in the sea! yea it had a lot of adult jokes that kids wouldnt get but... it was made specifically to entertain kids! same with pretty much any other show made by cartoon network/nickelodeon/disney channel in that time period! and same today!

Usually i just rb my popular halloween safety guild but with this year being shit i want to let you know how to stay safe and some fun activities to do,

If your town has canceled trick or treating do not still try to go out, if your town still has trick or treating on top of reading my old post make sure you wear your face mask or if your wearing fx makeup or your costume mask is too big wear a face shield over it, wear rubber/latex gloves since god knows if anyone else handing out candy or grabbing candy isnt washing their hands and if you want to still show off nails decorate fakes and glue them to the glove tips, do not eat anything unless from a home you can trust is 100% healthy without sanitizing the wrapper first, no homemade goodies unless you know the people involved are safe, do not join up with randon groups especially if no one is wearing a mask, carry and use hand sanitizer if gloves wont work, and make sure to keep space inbetween you and others going door to door, and unless you know them do not get physically close to any babies you meet not only because of covid but its flu season and little guys immune systems are garbage, if your handing out goodies this year use a marker leading to your door or take one bucket of social distancing distances so only a small amount of kids come to your door at a time, WEAR YOUR MASK AND GLOVES and please follow the baby rule of dont get close to the barbaloots, wipe your door knob regularly through out the night and keep and animals and young children inside just incase, clean everything at the end of the night

For fun things to do instead get a pumpkin treat and bing watch old halloween episodes of disney/nickelodeon/cartoon network shows or your favourite horror movies, epicgamestore has free horror games right now if possible get some snacks and game out for the night, bing read/watch your favourite horror youtube or podcast who cares if you know each episode? Thats what nostalgia if for, or start a new horror channel or podcast, bake some spooky treats and spend the night watching themed movies (like for a ghost theme casper, beetlejuice, the grudge..ect.) make art projects you dont usually habe time for and listen to spooky music, have a zoom/discord party where you and friends dress up and play a game together like among us or phantasmophobia, if you really wanted to you could even just watch hallmarks xmas movie marathon with a hot drink and set up any xmas tree you have or get started on any doy gifts your making, bing watch a childhood favourite series you usually forget about or think its just for kids, Halloween is about respecting the dead and the harvest so how ever you want to safely and legally celebrate dont let anyone stop you even if its just dressing up in your house alone or using precautions to trick or treat have fun but for fucking fucks sakes WEAR YOUR MASK AND SANITIZE YOUR HANDS AND ANY TREATS YOU GET BEFORE EATING

Yeah okay I watched book 1

So a few people in my family (cough cough @chapter-12 ) have been shoving avatar down my throat. As someone who grew up with Cartoon Network and like 2 Disney shows, the most I watched on Nickelodeon was around 5 episodes of spongebob and pretty much all of rugrats. However I clearly missed out of the main course of the channel because from what I’ve watched so far, yeah:

Avatar still holds up.

So these are gonna just be my first impressions because I’m not gonna form too much of an opinion until I’ve watched it all, uhhh no spoilers for anything past one and yeahhhh I’m gonna watch Korra even though I’m pretty sure it’s bad so no spoilers there either.

Animation

So to start, Avatars got some legit animation. As someone who’s studying animation and works in the artistic field, Avatar genuinely makes me sad with how generic modern TV has gotten (yes I know there are shows that are good in terms of animation but I’m speaking in terms of majority) like seriously whenever someone does bending or fight scenes the way they encapsulate weight and balance is incredible. Much impressed 10/10.

Story

Aight so my boy aang is like 112 years old after getting frozen in some ice and capable and her brother incapable both find him and are like “that’s cool that’s super” so blah blah oooops Caillou accidentally alerts angry boy zuko and his uncle iroh who is without a doubt the best character. So now incapable is like “damn Caillou you stupid idiot” and Caillou leaves on his flying teddy bear. So blah blah zuko attacks Caillou destroys him immediately. One thing I knew about but didn’t like know about was Caillou’s avatar state. I thought he’d get that once he mastered all four elements but nah, he can just activate his sharingan and go super saiyan whenever, which is honestly fine because god knows this group needs it. I found myself more interested in zuko’s subplot seeing as he just seems to have a lot more depth while Caillou just wanted to go to chuckie cheese’s where a kid can be a kid. I’m sure I’ll see more of him in book 2 but boy is that kid the embodiment of “I’m 14 and this is deep”

Season finale

I’m so glad there isn’t a word limit on tumblr. Ok so season finale is wild. Everyone arrives at the water tribe where Caillou is like “whaddup hoes” and shit. Capable wants to learn how to be a dope waterbender but bitchass says no because woman are supposed to be a human band-aid. Capable is like “ok bet” and gets sad like she usually does. So while they’re doing that incapable starts his local rounds of simping and decides to try and get under the sheets with moonlight Raven (yeah that’s a my little pony reference shut up) so fire nations gonna get here soon, iroh is a spy, zuko is angry, capable gets to learn waterbending because bitchass simps for her mom, blah blah blah plot and the fire nation gets here. Caillou needs to talk to Nintendo 3DS’ face raiders villain in order to get help but gets kidnapped by zuko because yes. Everyone was kung fu fighting oh-ah and then Caillou wakes up and zuko passes out in the snow but gets saved because Caillou is a simp. That one guy kills the fish iroh is like “bitch I was gonna eat that” and kicks ass then moonlight raven becomes the fish and sokka fucks the moon. Oh also Cailou became a big fish or something and walks around. Overall pretty solid season finale, though I feel like I didn’t see enough of sokka and Yue in order to really care when she died, yeah it was sad but it just didn’t hit like I think the writers would’ve preferred.
