Put Your Hand in the Hand. They don't write or sing them like this anymore. Written by Gene MacLellan and first recorded by Anne Murray in 1970. It's performed here on The Johnny Cash Show (probably in '70 or '71) with an all star cast featuring Johnny Cash, Anne Murray, Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens, the Carter Family, The Statler Brothers and Homer & Jethro. There are likely a few other well known names among the backing musicians.
Elvis Presley was known to be a fan of Murray, who had a distinctive 'contralto' voice, and recorded a version of both this song and her earlier hit Snowbird, which again had been written by MacLellan.

I Never Will Marry (1933)
Carter Family
One morning as I rambled all down the seashore The wind it did whistle and the waters did roar I heard a fair damsel make a pitiful sound It sounded so lonesome in the waters around
I never will marry or be no man's wife I expect to live single all the days of my life The shells in the ocean shall be my deathbed The fish in deep water swim over my head
She plunged her fair body in the ocean so deep She closed her blue eyes in the waters to sleep My love's gone and left me, the one I adore She's gone where I never will see her any more
I never will marry or be no man's wife I expect to live single all the days of my life The shells in the ocean shall be my deathbed The fish in deep water swim over my head

IT'S INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY! STORY + SONG OF THE WEEK! “Workin’ on a Building” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/workin-on-a-building-live-9-02  …For years this gospel song has been a staple of my live set, and I’ve played it with equal fervor in dive bars, churches, concert halls, and wherever else. It’s believed it came from a 19th  Century calypso work song sung by slaves in the Caribbean, and that crossed into the lexicon of Negro spirituals. In the 1920s it became popular and is now a blues-gospel standard, famously played by BB King, Bill Monroe, Elvis Presley, The 77s, Swan Silvertones, and other notables. I learned it from the Blue Ridge Rangers/John Fogerty version, which he drew from the touchstone 1934 Carter Family record—Oddly, A.P. Carter copyrighted it and added his writing credit even though it was already credited to Lillian Bowles and Winifred O. Hoyle (with slightly different lyrics). Meanwhile, you don’t have to be a carpenter to get the floor plan of this song… https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/workin-on-a-building-live-9-02

I still listen to the same old black-and-blue blues. Tommy McClennan, Lightnin’ Hopkins, the Carter Family, the early Carlisles. I listen to Big Maceo, Robert Johnson. Once in a while, I listen to Woody Guthrie again. Among the more recent people, Fred McDowell, Gary Stewart. I like Memphis Minnie a whole lot. Blind Willie McTell. I like bluegrass music. I listen to foreign music, too. I like Middle Eastern music a whole lot. Umm Kalthoum. Nana Maskouri.

♫ Blowin' In The Wind ♫ (Redux)
I have our friend Keith to thank for this one.  Last night in our comment chat, he quite innocently said, “The answer is blowin’ in the wind” and that was all it took!  BAM!!!  The song was firmly planted in my head and I knew it wasn’t going to leave until I shared it with you guys!  Muchas gracias for the earworm, Keith!  I haven’t played this since 2022, so not too soon for a redux, is…

Pop culture is a portal. Here’s a historical FYI on *that* album title—which seems more intentional than one might think.
MYTH: The CARTER Family is called “The First Family of Country Music,” for “inventing” country harmonies and a guitar picking style now named after them that shifted the genre.
TRUTH: they learned that style from a Black man, Lesley Riddle, and took much of their music from Black and Mexican musicians and families. It’s now called the “Carter Lick,” not the Riddle Lick 🥴
