THE MEET & GREET EXPERIENCE: WALLOWS
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dbe9c035f1b8fbfbfc5f625e36acd421/b325d179a529969c-98/s540x810/396aef87d75c59c2b7a331b1051bf58e1effbd19.jpg)
Jackson, Chris, and Gavin had been inseparable since they were kids. Their friendship was built on a shared love for music, and at the center of that passion was the band Wallows. The three friends had spent countless hours listening to their albums, watching their interviews, and dreaming about what it would be like to meet them. Each of them had their favorite member: Jackson admired Dylan Minnette for his brooding charisma and intense performances, Chris was captivated by Braeden Lemastersâ effortless cool and stage presence, and Gavin idolized Cole Preston for his quirky energy and offbeat humor.
When they won VIP tickets to a meet-and-greet at Wallows' latest concert, it felt like the universe was finally aligning in their favor. The thought of seeing their idols up close, let alone meeting them, was almost too much to handle. The days leading up to the concert were filled with excited chatter and planning. They debated what to say, what to wear, and how to make the most of their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The night of the concert, the atmosphere was electric. The stadium was packed with thousands of fans, all buzzing with excitement. But for Jackson, Chris, and Gavin, the real thrill was knowing they had backstage passes that would take them beyond the barriers separating the fans from the stars. After an explosive performance that left the audience screaming for more, the boys were finally led backstage. Their hearts pounded with a mix of nervousness and anticipation as they were ushered into a private room where Wallows was waiting.
The moment they entered the room, it felt surreal. Wallows stood before them, just as theyâd always imaginedâDylan with his intense gaze, Braeden with his relaxed confidence, and Cole with his playful smirk. The band members greeted them warmly, shaking their hands and thanking them for their support. It was everything they had hoped for and more.
As Jackson shook Dylan's hand, he felt a strange tingling sensation in his palm. At first, he thought it was just nerves, but then it spread up his arm and through his entire body. Chris and Gavin, too, felt an odd energy coursing through them as they interacted with Braeden and Cole. Each of the boys carried a secret item tied to their favorite band member. Jackson had a guitar pick heâd bought at a Wallows show years ago that he always kept in his pocket. Chris wore a bracelet that supposedly matched one Braeden had worn during their early tours. Gavin carried a lucky coin that had once been owned by Cole, a prized possession he had won in an online auction.
As each boy touched their respective idol, the energy from these items seemed to merge with the strange sensation they were feeling. The room started to spin, and the boysâ vision blurred. They looked at each other, their faces contorted with confusion and fear as they began to change.
Jackson was the first to notice something was happening. His face started to tingle, almost like pins and needles, and when he looked in the mirror across the room, he could hardly believe what he was seeing. His eyes, once a deep brown, were lightening to the piercing blue of Dylan's. His nose, previously a bit crooked from a childhood accident, was straightening, and his cheekbones were rising, giving his face a chiseled look that mirrored Dylanâs. His dark, unruly hair began to lighten and shorten, transforming into Dylan's signature tousled look. Jackson watched in awe and a bit of terror as his body followed suit, his shoulders broadening and his frame becoming leaner, mirroring the physique he had admired in countless music videos.

Chris was next. He felt a warmth spreading across his skin, and when he looked down at his hands, he saw that they were changingâhis fingers elongating and becoming more delicate, the nails neatly trimmed and clean, just like Braedenâs. His face was transforming too, his jawline sharpening and his chin becoming more prominent. His hair, which had always been a bit wild and hard to manage, was smoothing out, turning into the sleek, dark waves that Braeden was known for. His posture adjusted as well, becoming more relaxed and confident, almost as if he were naturally assuming Braeden's laid-back demeanor. Chris could feel his muscles adjusting, not becoming overly bulky but lean and toned, the kind of body that fit perfectly under a leather jacket on stage.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f60659911c2ee874e4b1f8b8113d7580/b325d179a529969c-1b/s540x810/74ecc146009320a8e7c80ab3c01ba5988c544ab2.jpg)
Gavin was the last to experience the change. His heart raced as he felt his body start to morph. His usually round face began to narrow, his eyes taking on the mischievous twinkle that was so distinctly Cole. His hair, which he had always kept short and neat, began to grow out, curling into the messy, yet somehow perfectly styled waves that Cole rocked effortlessly. Gavinâs body also started to slim down, his limbs lengthening and his torso becoming more defined, the transformation giving him the wiry, agile build that was ideal for a drummer. He felt an unfamiliar energy in his hands, a rhythm that seemed to pulse through his veins, almost as if he had always known how to keep the beat.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d31505efe032ff9d149beeab0c91e9dd/b325d179a529969c-77/s540x810/e5fb917966cec7c886c0233bdbffee8e0faeea9c.jpg)
As the transformation completed, the boys stared at each other in disbelief. They were no longer themselvesâthey had become Wallows. Every detail, down to the smallest mannerism and expression, was identical. But as they marveled at their new appearances, the real Wallowsânow trapped in the bodies of three ordinary teenagersâwere panicking. They tried to speak out, but their voices were shaky, their protests confused and disoriented.
Before anyone could fully grasp what had happened, a security guard entered the room, alarmed by the commotion. He took one look at the sceneâthe disheveled, panicked boys who looked like nothing more than overexcited fans, and the calm, collected figures of the now-transformed Wallowsâand made a quick judgment. âHey, whatâs going on here? You boys need to leave,â he barked, grabbing the real Wallows by the arms and hauling them towards the door.
The real Wallows, trapped in the bodies of Jackson, Chris, and Gavin, tried to resist, shouting out their true identities, but their cries fell on deaf ears. The guard, convinced they were troublemakers, escorted them out of the venue, leaving the newly transformed Wallows alone in the dressing room. For a moment, the room was silent as Jackson, Chris, and Gavin processed what had just happened.
Then, slowly, a smile spread across Jacksonâs face, followed by Chris and Gavin. They had always fantasized about being in the band, but never in their wildest dreams did they think it could actually happen. âWeâre⊠weâre really them,â Jackson said, his voice now Dylanâs deep, smooth tone. âWeâre Wallows.â
Chris, now Braeden glanced at the instruments lying around the room, feeling an overwhelming urge to pick up the guitar. âThis is insane,â he murmured, strumming a few chords effortlessly. âItâs like Iâve always known how to do this.â
Without a momentâs hesitation, the boys made the decision to embrace their new identities. The thrill of fame, the rush of performing, and the adoration of millions were theirs for the taking. They stepped into their roles with surprising ease, as if they had been born for this moment. The concert that night was a roaring success, and the fans didnât suspect a thing. To them, Wallows was as great as ever, maybe even better.
As the days turned into weeks, Jackson, Chris, and Gavin fully steped into their new lives. They reveled in the freedom and power that came with being rockstars, enjoying every moment of their new reality. They quickly adapted to the demands of fame, learning to navigate the spotlight with the same ease and confidence as their predecessors.
Jackson, now Dylan, found himself thriving in his new persona. He enjoyed the attention, the way people hung on his every word, and the influence he now wielded. He loved the way his new body feltâstrong, lean, and capable of commanding a stage. He began to adopt Dylanâs signature brooding intensity, a look that made fans swoon and critics take notice.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dafe0a506ce812b0198858fd97402e22/b325d179a529969c-94/s640x960/ce3d09da63296d1e16fe14ff08477dacdaf78905.jpg)
Chris, as Braeden, embraced his role with a laid-back confidence that felt surprisingly natural. He loved the thrill of performing, the roar of the crowd, and the way his guitar felt like an extension of himself. He quickly picked up Braedenâs mannerisms, the easy smile, the casual swagger, and found that he could slip into the role without even thinking about it. It was as if he had always been Braeden, and the world was none the wiser.
Gavin, now Cole, dove headfirst into the bandâs creative process. He discovered a natural rhythm and skill on the drums that amazed even himself. He relished in the playful energy that came with being Cole, enjoying the way fans reacted to his quirky sense of humor and spontaneous antics. He felt more alive than ever, as if he had finally found the perfect outlet for his boundless energy and creativity.
The new Wallows began writing new songs, drawing on their own experiences while seamlessly blending with the bandâs established sound. Their music soared to new heights, and their popularity skyrocketed.
The fans and the industry embraced the new Wallows with open arms, unaware of the transformation that had taken place. Jackson, Chris, and Gavin had become not just replacements, but the embodiment of everything the band wasâand more. They were living their dream, and nothing could hold them back.
The Old Wallows' Struggle while the new Wallows basked in their newfound glory, the original band members, now trapped in the bodies of three ordinary teenagers, struggled to adapt to their new lives. The shock of the transformation had left them disoriented and desperate.
Dylan, Braeden, and Cole, now in the bodies of Jackson, Chris, and Gavin, tried to explain their situation to anyone who would listen, but their please were dismissed as delusions or desperate attempts at getting attention. The real Wallows were forced to confront the harsh reality of their situation. Stripped of their fame, talent, and identities, they had to navigate the mundane lives of the three boys. School, part-time jobs, and the daily grind were a far cry from the excitement and luxury they had once known. They quickly realized that the world had moved on without them, and their former lives were now in the hands of the very fans who had once idolized them. Frustration and bitterness began to set in as they watched from the sidelines, powerless to change their fate. They tried to reach out to their old contacts, to prove who they really were, but their efforts were met with skepticism and ridicule. The world had accepted the new Wallows without question, and there was no way to convince anyone otherwise...

(even more camp camp season 5 teaser spoilers but this time is the last time probably, I'll just watch the whole thing and put my thoughts here)
-so cj is like some kind of dudebro influencer streamer type, I wasn't too far off. cj seems like the type of guy to carry a tiny microphone around a mall and interview people đ and I definitely get to have my little dynamic I predicted before because ross WOULD hate him for that
-on the topic of cj I don't know how I missed his mullet oopsies
-mahogany đ
-i have a lot to say about this image actually. I screenshotted it so I could talk about how max is willingly hugging another person, I wanna say it's only the second time in the series he's done this? but then while looking at it I noticed neils earring?? he went to claires?? and he either only has one or gets them pierced at some point during the season
-also I just think it's funny that max is still freaked out by harrison like 2? 3? seasons after Mind Freakers. poor boy
-space kid??? hello???
-I see they finally got tired of animating prestons weird little shoulder things and did away with them entirely. im guessing the reason for his new outfit is that hes getting more into modern musicals and leaving behind the shakespearean stuff? I haven't seen newsies but it's very newsies to me. hey, this gives me an excuse to use the new ross design anyways I guess
-the long awaited sequel to the extremely detailed bread basket: extremely detailed popsicles
(come to think of it, here's neil without an earring again. maybe a one episode thing? also, idk why this screenshot is so dark)
final verdict: we are so back!!! I heavily enjoyed this promo and now I am so excited about this season. I wasn't sure I was gonna like this season, either due to it actually sucking or because the last time a new season of camp camp came out I was fourteen years old. but clearly I must like it if I just wrote a whole analysis of like every other scene in the teaser. really my only regret is that the season, or at least what's coming out at this time, is so short

Exclusive Interview: Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Logan & the cast of They/Them on creating an empowering queer slasher movie
Exclusive Interview: Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Logan & the cast of They/Them on creating an empowering queer slasher movie
They/Them (pronounced âThey-slash-Themâ), marks the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated veteran screenwriter John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator), who brings his own script to the screen with his queer take on the slasher genre. As a lifelong committed horror fan, Logan had longed to see himself represented in the genre. âWhen I was growing up, queer characters were for the mostâŠ

so, How do you think the companions would react to finding out sole has advanced prosthetics from their time in the war? (i headcannon fem sole as some sort of SOF during the war, coz lawyer is just boring >.>)
Fallout 4 Companions react to Sole having advanced prosthetics from before the bombs fell.Â
Hey anon, thanks so much for the ask! This was really interesting to think about, and yeah, I also headcannoned one of my OCs as a soldier before the bombs fell, cuz yeah... not sure how helpful being a lawyer would be in post-apocalyptic times đ
I hope you enjoy!
Cait:
Her eyes would fall to the line across Soleâs right elbow, wondering how she hadnât noticed it before. She wouldnât care too much, and wouldnât treat them any differently, but she would be interested in how Sole had gotten their injury, and would certainly try and coax the whole story out of them (resorting to the use of alcohol if necessary to loosen their lips). She was so bold about her own traumatic past experiences, so Sole could surely tell her about this one thing, right? The brawler might also be interested in the physical abilities of their prosthetic arm and hand, wondering if it would give them an edge in the next bar fight they found themselves in.
Curie:
She would be very interested in every detail Sole could provide regarding their prosthetic shoulder, left chest plate, and arm. The scientist wouldnât be able to contain herself, asking question after question about its functionality, the nature of Soleâs injury before they received the prosthetic, their rehabilitation process, the way the prosthetic interacts with Soleâs body and how it's able to move. As Sole stood there, trying to figure out where to begin, Curieâs eyes would widen in surprise at her own rudeness, she would apologize and ask if Sole was comfortable discussing their injury with her. As she finds out more, Curie would begin to try and create her own prosthetics based off of Soleâs in order to help any handicapped patients she came across in the Commonwealth.
Danse:
The paladinâs eyes would widen at Soleâs words. He never would have guessed that Soleâs entire left hip and leg was an advanced prosthetic, and the commanding officer would be curious as to why they hadnât mentioned it to him earlier. He would feel guilty as he thought back on all of the times he pushed them harder, told them to gruffly to keep up or to continue moving after it seemed like they needed rest. He would apologize and ask how he could help to better accommodate Sole, offering to speak to Proctor Teagan and Proctor Ingram about Soleâs circumstances and possible improvements to their power armor or the prosthetic itself. Danse would be a little hesitant, but ultimately he would gain the courage to ask if they would be comfortable telling him about how they were injured, going so far as to share some of the stories surrounding his own battle scars with them in return.
Deacon:
Deacon would have been curious as to why Sole always wore their sunglasses, he often thought perhaps they were simply mocking him. But one night, as they removed their shades and locked eyes with him, he would notice the difference in coloration and ask them about it. When they told him one of their eyes was a fully functioning prosthetic, he'd be a little shocked, not even aware that those existed, but interested nonetheless. Apart from the occasional joke about Sole getting an eye patch, being a pirate, or just sight-related puns in general, he would be pretty chill about the whole thing. If Sole wanted to tell him more about it, he was open to it, but he wouldn't mind if they wanted to keep it to themself. No matter how much he knows, Deacon would be protective of his partner, and would try his best to keep their prosthetic a secret from as many people as possible, since it is such a unique feature of theirs.
Hancock:
He wouldn't even break eye contact with Sole when they told him about their prosthetic right arm and shoulder, he would just ever so slightly raise the ridge above his eyes in surprise at having never noticed before. It really wouldn't matter to him, and he would treat Sole the same way he always has, just maybe he would try and stick to the right of them more often since he knows that it's their weaker side. If they're ever in any pain, he'll of course have a plethora of chems on hand to help relieve them of it. He won't be one to openly ask about their past and their injury, but if they want to tell him, he's all ears and no judgment.
MacCready:
He would try to act nonchalant when they told him about their prosthetic forearm, wrist, and hand, but his expression would clearly give away his shock. What do you mean itâs not real!? How does it work? What happened to your real arm? Can you still feel stuff with it? Does it make it harder to aim? How does it move? A hundred questions would tumble into his mind, but he would try his best to keep them all from spilling out of his mouth at once, putting on a cool front, heâd simply nod and tell them that heâs glad they felt they could tell him about it, and that would be the end of it for now. As they continue traveling together, he would periodically voice one of the questions he had thought of before, still trying to seem aloof about the whole thing. In reality, he thinks itâs really cool, and it reminds him of a few comic book characters heâs read about.
Nick:
The detective was nothing short of astounded when he looked into Soleâs eyes for the first time after finding out they were fully functioning prosthetics. He couldnât believe it, they looked so realistic, he never would have known if he hadnât been told. Finding out about Soleâs eyes honestly made the synth feel more at home around them; not that they had ever made him feel alienated as a synth, but now he felt like they could empathize with him a bit more easily. Although, he must admit, heâs a little jealous of their normal-looking eyes in comparison to his own. The older synth has made his peace with who and what he is, having been this way his whole synthetic life, but he may just approach Sole and speak to them about where, hypothetically, he could find prosthetics like theirs, and would consider speaking to Dr. Amari about installing them. Sole, of course, would help him out, all while making sure Nick knew how much they liked his eyes the way that they are.
Piper:
The reporter's eyes would slowly widen with each inch Sole's pant leg was rolled up to expose their prosthetic ankle, shin, and knee. She would then try to contain her shock, but would fail pretty miserably as her interviewing instinct kicked in and she began firing off every question that entered her mind. Most of them had to do with how Soles life changed after they had their injury, and then received their prosthetic limb, and Sole would answer a few to appease her before she realized how insensitive she was being. Piper would then instantly make up for it by apologizing to them, and offering to help them out with anything they may need. More often than not, while they were traveling, she would offer to carry more, would try and take more rest stops, and would offer even more snacks and beverages to Sole along the way. Sole would insist that they're okay, telling her about the fully functioning nature of their prosthetic, but she would still take efforts to help them out more often.
Preston:
He would start by apologizing to Sole after he found out, but he wouldnât be sure exactly why he felt the need to apologize. Perhaps because he felt sorry for them, and the injury and rehabilitation they had to live through? Or maybe it was because he felt like he had put too much pressure on them from the start? He had asked them to take down a dozen raiders and a deathclaw on the first day heâd met them, and then offered them the position of general, and all this time they had been helping those in need of their help with two prosthetic legs. They told him briefly that they had been injured before the bombs fell, but he hadnât realized it had been this extensive. He would be sure to take it a little easier on them, and would be more conscious of their well-being, offering to rest more when they were traveling, and giving what missions he could to other minutemen. Preston wouldnât pry, but would be ready to listen if Sole ever wanted to tell him more about their injury or their experience living with their prosthetics.
X6-88:
X6's expression would remain ultimately unchanged as they told him about their two prosthetic hands, but he would marvel at their authenticity. How had he not known that they were prosthetics? The courser would ask if they were fully functional, if only to ensure that the prosthetics wouldn't be a danger to Sole in combat, but once assured that they were, he wouldn't treat Sole any differently. Inside, he would be curious about how Sole had sustained such an injury, but he would never voice it. If they did choose to tell him the whole story, he would simply listen and nod, a little confused as to why they felt the need to share this information with him. Though he didn't know why they told him, he would feel a strange lightness in his chest at the fact that they trusted him enough to share something this personal with him.Â

We've had so much happy sappy things lately. How about some angst? Companions react to sole getting super pissed at them and just leaving forever?
Oh, no..... I knew this was going to come soon enough... All good things must come to an end, after all đđđ
All jokes aside, this literally broke my heart to write, but I very much enjoyed your suggestion for the new perspective it gave and the opportunity to write some good, old-fashioned angst đ„° I didn't provide an explanation for what they said or what they did to make F!Sole mad, which I hope is okay! (I couldn't picture my F!Sole leaving any of them for any reason but I'm sure everyone's Sole varies in that respect)
Warnings: Light mentions of suicide, heavy mentions of drug and alcohol use.
Cait - Falls back into chems and will likely drug and drink herself to the grave. She can't believe that she went and screwed everything up again. She let down and upset the one person she vowed to never do that to, and now she's alone. Again. She's managed to run off the one person in her whole lifetime that actually cared about her and all she knows is that life is not even really worth living sober if she has to endure pain like this.
Piper - Cries herself to sleep for many nights after and sometimes finds herself crying during the day while she's typing an article or doing small mundane things, her guilt and sadness consuming her. (If F!Sole let her interview her back when she first came to Diamond City) Piper keeps a copy of the View from the Vault articles beside her bed and numbly reads them sometimes before going to sleep just to remind her of the only best friend she had ever had in her life. The only person that had stuck by her and tried to look out for her since her dad. Eventually she stops crying, but it takes a long time for her to rebound and her smile to come back. It never is as bright as it used to be when F!Sole was there, though.
Curie - Breaks her heart and completely destroys her. She cries for days, weeks, forever. All she knows is that there is a huge hole in her heart and she thinks of F!Sole every day. Her humanity is a constant reminder of the great person that she had lost and she will forever blame and kick herself for being so horrible that F!Sole would leave her. Curie will always care about F!Sole even if F!Sole doesn't care about her and Curie will forever miss her.
MacCready - Ends up heading back to go be with Duncan permanently. F!Sole was the only thing keeping him in the Commonwealth but now that he screwed that up, there is no reason left to stay. He was originally going to have his son brought to him as soon as possible, but he decides that they're better off away from where all of the sad memories are lingering. When he returns to his son, he is very happy, but he soon falls into a basic routine, trying to get through his grief of losing a true friend because of his own stupidity. He will eventually come out of the depression, but he will always carry the intense guilt of driving her away for good.
Deacon - Despite the fact that he just continues on with that constant mask of looking like he's just as calm and happy as anyone else, he is hurting deeply on the inside. It is easy to tell because of how he seems even more distant than usual and he very rarely ever comes back to the Railroad HQ. Guilt turns him into someone even more detached than he used to be before she left. However, he sometimes goes undercover just to watch her at a safe enough distance to keep her from recognizing him. After all, he has not changed his face since she left, preferring to keep some souvenir from his time with her. Unfortunately, his face is all he has left of those days.
Codsworth - Is broken-hearted and is at the epitome of guilt because he cannot believe he has made her so mad that she will have nothing more to do with him. He has absolutely no one left to serve and there is no one left who cares about him at all. He ends up falling into a state of denial, somehow glitching and convincing himself that she, sir, and young Shaun are simply away and will come back eventually. He sadly remains in this deluded state for the remainder of his days.
Hancock - Somehow does even more chems than before, knowing it cannot kill him but needing the rush to distract him from the complete and utter pain after sending away one of the few people that actually stood by him through thick and thin. He goes back to being the full-time mayor of Goodneighbor, but when he falls so deeply into the chems, the citizens begin thinking that it would be best to overthrow him. When he figures this out, he knows he has to stop doing the chems quite so much. He cuts back just enough to be coherent and make speeches to inspire people, but anyone can see that he is by no means doing as well as he used to before F!Sole left. At some point he is completely numb and he takes the chems to just feel something besides this deadness inside.
Danse - Is devastated. She is all he had left after being kicked out of the Brotherhood. He can't believe that he drove away the person that convinced him to see his own worth despite his true identity. He finds himself in deep, inescapable depression, and he eventually loses sight of why he should even keep going on at all. After all, he is just an instrument of evil that breaks friendship, families, and all good things. Why would the world need something like that?
Preston - Despite the fact that he does not believe he can do it, he forces himself to take up the mantel of General. He tries to lead and maintain a brave face even though he feels like he is falling apart. He knows the Minutemen are depending on him, and he feels so helpless. Eventually, he hands leadership over to Ronnie Shaw, returning to a second-in-command position as he throws himself into duties and work to try not to think about the loss of one of the few people that actually saw his vision and tried to help him achieve his dream. However, he can't quite forget the fact that it's all his fault that it ended up like this.
Valentine - Honestly cannot believe it and is in pure shock and devastation for several days before the grief and depression finally sets in. He throws himself into his work and becomes even more self-endangering, caring very little about himself and what happens to him. He knows he still has Ellie and the agency, but it just kind of seems to fade in importance as he thinks of F!Sole and how he drove her away. If he doesn't manage to get himself killed during this period, Ellie has a stern talk with him, and he actually does start being a little more careful. Not quite the level of careful he was when he had both F!Sole and Ellie on his back about it, but he tries for Ellie's sake if not his own.
X6-88 - Is quite angry at himself for angering and isolating such a vital and valuable asset of the Institute, but there is something else inside of him that pricks and pokes at his mind and gut. It is something he cannot identify and something he has never experienced before. It frequently brings her face to the forefront of his mind, homing in on just how angry that she looked and how she looked like she would rather be looking upon a pile of Brahmin dung than to be staring into his face. It bothers him for some reason, and when he returns to the Institute and expresses his thoughts, it is the last thing on his mind before they wipe his memory of her and reset him entirely.
Dogmeat - Tries to follow her even though she does not want him to. When she screams and throws things at him, he lowers his ears and tucks his tail, confused at what in the world he did wrong. He just wants her to love him again like she used to. He could be a better boy. He could stop pooping in Cait's shoes and stop chewing holes in things. Eventually, after weeks of following her and being rejected, he finally leaves her alone, heading back to Red Rocket Truck Stop where he decides to wait for her in hopes she will one day come back and give him all the pets or at least one pet. He ends up living his days waiting for her and pacing the place, waking up every morning with hopes that the sunrise will bring her back to him until he doesn't see the sunrise again.
Strong - Stays mad at her forever. However, he sometimes does wish that he had tiny human to help him with some things like fighting or cooking, but he quickly remembers that he's mad at her and tells himself that super mutants don't need puny humans. But there is something strange in his stomach when he thinks of her, but he usually smashes something to try to make himself feel better. The feeling never goes away quickly, though.

So I was tagged by @yesgreenstuffhere and I figured Iâd join in!Â
Fallout 4 OOC Companion: Candy Jones. (Ex-Courser, Hunter)
Candy Jones is a woman of few words, and can be a bit of a jerk sometimes. Sheâs very much âget to the pointâ. However, she might warm up to some people if sheâs around them long enough (and she decides she likes them). Sheâs an ex-Courser from the Institute and wants back in to overthrow Father and change how things are run.
Name: Candy Jones
Found: CIT Ruins
Companion Perk:Â âThe Hunterâ. Do 20% more damage to animals when traveling.
Weapons of Choice: Sniper Rifles
-Long Distance Relationship: a hardened sniper rifle
I think we should travel together:
âIf you say so.â
âYou must be pretty desperate if youâre asking me to come along.â
âJust donât piss me off.â
Use Melee:
âOh sure, make the one eyed woman fight up close and personal. What could go wrong?â
âSeriously? You want me to bring a knife to a gun fight?â
âI better not lose my other arm because of this. Or my other eye.â
Use Ranged:
âFinally, someone who appreciates shooting from the shadows!â
âNow THIS I can work with.â
âTheyâll never know what hit them.â
Open Inventory:
âYou better give me something good.â
âDonât touch my Sniper.â
âWhat am I? Youâre pack mule?â
If Overencumbered:Â
âIâd offer to carry something for you, but this is funny to watch.â
âHow many times does this have to happen before you learn to stop picking up EVERYTHING you come across?â
âIf you break your back, youâre on your own.â
Stay Close: âOkay, but if you start to stink Iâm moving back a bit.â
âOnly if you agree to spot for me.â
âFine.â
Keep Distance: âIâll watch your back from the shadows.â
âFine, I didnât want to stand close to you anyway.âÂ
âIf you move too slow, I might just slip away. And youâd never know.âÂ
Stealth:
âStriking from the shadows, one of the best ways to kill.â
âDonât make too much noise, if you blow Iâll cover Iâll just shoot you myself.â
âDonât rush, youâll get us killed that way.â
Be Passive:
âSeriously? I came here for some action!â
âYou better hope this doesnât come back to bite you in the ass.âÂ
âBooooring!â
Be Aggresive:
âNow weâre talking!âÂ
âNow itâs a party!â
âGood. For a moment there I was worried you were going soft on me.â
Use Stimpak:
âI think I lost my other arm!â
âI think my good eye is hanging out of the socket.â
âAs much as I hate to admit it, I need some medical help over here!â
Wait Here:
âDonât have all the fun without me.â
âGood idea! Maybe if I stand around and wait long enough, the action will come to me.â
âIf you take too long Iâm leaving.â
Follow Me:
âFinally! I was getting bored.â
âTook you long enough.â
âI almost left, donât take so long next time!â
Dismissed:
âYour funeral.â
( in a sarcastic tone) âAw, and I was just starting to like you!â
âI would say you know where to find me, but Iâm going to make sure you canât find me.â
Her Reaction to Companions:
Dogmeat:Â âHeâs got a good nose, that one. Be safe out there boy!â
Preston:Â âSeriously? Youâre taking the goody two shoes with you? Thatâll be a snooze fest.â
Piper:Â âIf Piper asks me for an interview about the Institute, the answer is no.â
Nick Valentine:Â âYouâre lucky Iâm no longer a courser Valentine, I couldâve turned you over to the Institute several times over by now.â (note: sheâs just saying this to mess with him.)
Maccready: âThis oneâs got great aim, but a shit attitude.âÂ
Hancock:Â âSo you and the ghoul are gonna go have fun without me?â
Strong: âYou travel with a super mutant? You know what? I shouldnât even be surprised.âÂ
Cait:Â âMy kind of gal! Donât have too much fun out there without me!â
Danse:Â âThis guy is almost as boring as Preston.â
Deacon:Â âIâve been watching this one for a while. Heâs not as sneaky as he thinks he is.â
X6-88:Â âHere to try and steal my thunder X6?â
Codsworth:Â âSeriously? The cleaning robot? What is he gonna do, scrub them to death?â
Curie:Â âYou know the institute is gonna want to kidnap you now that youâre in a synth body right?â
Old Longfellow: âFinally someone who can hold their liquor!âÂ
Gage: *snickers*Â âNice eyepatch nerd.â
Ada:Â âI donât know how to feel about this one.â
Companions Reactions to her:
Dogmeat: Wags, happy barks
Preston: âBetter to be a âgoody two shoesâ then get killed picking fights.â
Piper:Â âPsst, hey Candy. Whatâs it like inside the institute?â
Nick Valentine:Â âYa know for someone named Candy I figured youâd be sweet.â
Maccready:Â âHey Candy, want to engage in a shoot off sometime?â
Hancock: âSure we canât bring this one along? We could have one hell of a time.â
Strong:Â âLittle lady will be smashed by Strong!â
Cait:Â âHey if you let me come with you two, we can have ourselves a girlâs night out.â
Danse:Â âShe may be ex-Institute, but sheâs still a synth! Why are you traveling with the enemy?â
Deacon:Â âOh shit, Hi Iâll be going now!â
X6-88:Â âYou are Institute property. I should reclaim you myself.â
Codsworth:Â âAre you sure itâs safe to travel with this one sir/mum?â
Curie:Â âOh, a fellow synth! Maybe you can teach me how to use this body.â
Old Longfellow:Â âNow hereâs someone Iâd like to get drunk with!â
Gage:Â âYouâre lucky I donât just shoot you on sight, one-eye.â
Ada:Â âA courser could be a great help with your goal sir/maâam. Good luck out there!â
Send Home (CIT ruins):
âWhatever. I didnât want to travel with you more anyway.â
âMaybe now I can find a way back to the Institute.â
âGood. I can get some target practice without interruptions now.â
Enemies (long-range):
âNever knew what hit them!â
âNow THIS is the way to fight.â
âOops. Looks like I got them all!â

Companions react to Danse stepping out of power armor for the first time!
Cait:Â
She would look Danse up and down very obviously and grin which would make him extremely uncomfortable.Â
âYaâoutgha get out of that thing more often Dansey. Who knew there were cookies in that tin can of yours.â
She obviously isnât actually interested in Danse. Way too boring. But sheâs not one to toss out eye candy just cause it isnât her favorite flavor. She wouldnât actively follow him but for fun and also to get on his nerves she would definitely cat-call him everytime he was in hearing range. Deacon and Hancock might join in for a few comments if they donât have anything better to do.
She would not stop unless sole made a convincing plea or reason for why she should and maybe not even then.
Danse would not respond or look at Cait but he would be very red and never get out of his suit in front of her again.
Codsworth:Â
âWhy Paladin Danse I dare say youâve been keeping up your workout routine! Cheers to your excellent health whether in or out of your power armor!â Codsworth is reassured that his owner is traveling with someone so equipped for the struggles of the wasteland.
âUh, thank you, Codsworth.â Danse would feel a bit awkward but he would appreciate the compliment.Â
âMight I polish that for you while you're otherwise engaged? It seems to be in a just dreadful state and I would like nothing more than for you to be looking your best in your wasteland escapades!â Though he is reassured by Danseâs physical state and abilities, he is mortified by the state his armor is in. All the scratches, dings, and dirt? Itâs just horrible. Codsworth has always wanted an opportunity to fix that suit up and is pretty happy that the day has finally arrived.
âI- If youâd like to you can.â
âOh good! I do so love a difficult task!â With that Codsworth would zoom away to procure the necessary supplies to return Danseâs armor to itâs original state. Danse didnât really know whether or not he should be offended at the robotâs comments but he decided to just continue about his business and not think about it too much.Â
Curie:
âOh Monsieur Danse, you are quite zee lovely specimen! I would be eager to do a physical examination if you would allow me to.â Ever since leaving the vault, Curie has been astounded at how many different sorts of humans there are. Danse is particularly interesting to her because of the amazing athletic feats he does so regularly. She is also interested in studying the effects of constant power armor usage on the human body. When she sees him step out of his suit for the first time and sees his overly muscular physique, it just tacks on another reason she wants to study him.Â
Before Blind Betrayal:
âThe only specimen that needs examining is you, synth. Donât talk to me unless youâre submitting yourself to the Brotherhood.â The only reason Curie isnât already on the Prydwen is because Sole thinks itâs their friend. It bothers Danse immensely that Sole hasnât destroyed or used this inhuman thing already.
(Donât get mad at me he literally says this in game.)
Curie is very hurt, she expected this reaction but it still hurt. She was still getting used to feelings such as the pained ones she felt in moments like these.
After Blind Betrayal:
âNo. Thank you.â Danseâs words were strained. Being around Curie was pretty awful for him. He had treated her so terribly before and he still had strong feelings of disgust towards her despite what he knows now. Everytime he sees her and has those feelings of hate and disgust, he remembers that he and Curie are the same. Heâs still struggling to overcome the years of propaganda that were drilled into him.Â
Curie is disappointed. Did Danse not see they are the same? If he didnât believe in her humanity then he would have to not believe in his own. It is very confusing for Curie. She hopes that he will eventually go back on his denial of her offer. He would be a very interesting specimen.
Deacon:
He would be surprised that Danse would be able to wear that clunky thing so much in the first place. He wouldnât be surprised at how muscular he is under the suit though. It takes a lot of strength to operate those suits. Heâd read that before they were fully developed, a lot of trial runs had resulted in really terrible accidents. The kind of accidents that crush all of your bones at once or remove your top half from your bottom.
Deacon would definitely make a few jokes. âHey the sardineâs outta the can!â âIsnât getting out of that bulldozer against Brotherhood policy or something?â âAnd I thought it was glued on! Learn something new everyday.â
Danse would scowl at his comments but say nothing. He did not like Deacon one bit. That manâs hiding something and if it turns out what heâs hiding will harm Sole or the Brotherhoodâs mission, there was gonna be hell to pay. Danse couldâve sworn heâd seen him on the Prydwen a few times but whenever he looked back again to check, he was gone. Danse didnât much like the idea of leaving his power armor alone with Deacon around but Sole assured him heâs harmless. Weâll see...
Whenever Danse returned to his suit Deacon would stand suspiciously close to it and act like he was trying to play cool after almost being caught doing something nefarious. He would never get tired of watching Danse carefully inspect every part of the armor before apprehensively getting in. Man that guyâs fun to mess with.
Dogmeat:Â
He was so surprised! He thought this human was just made of metal! But now Dogmeat can play and jump and lick! Yes!!
Danse has no idea how to deal with a dog he wasnât allowed to kick so he would just try to awkwardly push the pup off until Sole took care of it.
Hancock:Â
Oh HELL YES! Hancock has wanted to punch this fucker since he first laid eyes on him. âHEY SOLDIER BOY, TIME TO SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO OUT OF YOUR DAMN COWARD COFFIN!â He would make a beeline towards the paladin and the paladin would speed walk towards the ghoul as well. Sole barely let him insult the damn freak but this was a direct attack of which he was most definitely gonna defend himself from.
Sole would freak out a bit and try to get in between the two. They would both try to get Sole out of the way so they could pummel each other. A brief alliance in order to facilitate their battle. This was too sweet of an opportunity to miss.Â
âSorry Sunshine, this is happening.â
âSole, it has directly started an altercation with me and I intend to see it through.â
If they both had a great relationship with Sole after a bit of panicked begging to both parties, the men would begrudgingly back off. They would, however, insult each other viciously despite Soleâs protests.Â
âYou have no fucking idea how lucky you are meathead. I swear to god if they werenât hereâŠâ
âYou call me a meathead but youâre the one whoâs rotting, ghoul.â
They would continue to jab each other until Sole dragged Danse off to do what he got out of his suit to do in the first place.Â
If one or both of them didnât have a close relationship with Sole, well, it wouldnât be pretty. They would forcibly move Sole out of the way and fight for a while. Though Danse is much bigger than Hancock, Hancock is quicker and better at hand to hand. Danse, being unused to fighting outside of his armor, was ultimately unable to beat the ghoul. Hancock landed one final blow to his face, knocking Danse flat. When he stayed down Hancock laughed loudly and spit at him.
âDone in by the best, lucky you.â It would be a huge blow to Danseâs ego and heâd resent Hancock even more now. Hancock would gloat constantly when Danse was around. âHeyyy, thereâs my favorite punching bag!â âCome on over Dansey I wonât bite!â He wouldnât out of shame, but if Danse ever did try to retort, Hancock would just taunt him. Saying something like âOh yeah? Ya know my favorite way to settle conflicts is by beating the other asshole into the dirt. Hop outta that suit and we can go for round two.â
MacCready:
Macâs always thought of Danse as an annoying asshole. He still thinks of him this way but when he stepped out of that armor for the first time. Ho lee sh-crap. MacCready might have to look into joining the Brotherhood if the rest of those guys looked the same as Danse. He had expected him to be strong cause of the whole carrying 500 pounds of steel everywhere but his body was something Mac was not expecting and something he could look at for a while.Â
If Danse came near the merc he would probably clam up and blush a bit. If Danse caught him staring, he would annoyedly ask, âIs there a problem, civilian?â
âI- uh no.â any other day he wouldâve fired back some snide remark but he couldnât quite seem to think of one right now.Â
Nick:
Nick really couldnât give less of a damn. He hated Danse, Danse hated him, and the two did their best to ignore each other.Â
Piper: Piper didnât really care either. Sure he was muscular but she was very turned off by the everything else about him. All she really payed attention to was the possibility of an exclusive interview or an inside look at the Brotherhoodâs workings. Danse would never agree to either of those though. Preston: Preston didnât care. He already knew you had to be strong to wear power armor especially if you wore them as much as Brotherhood Paladins did. He didnât like the Brotherhood and by extension, he didnât trust Danse. Preston was mannerly of course, for Sole, but he knows Danse thinks very little of the Minutemen so he didnât try too hard to be kind. Strong: Strong thinks this is good time to smash strong human. He has killed many brothers but he wears metal suit. He is weak without metal suit. Human friend tells Strong that if Strong smash, Strong will not find milk of human kindness. Strong angry, Strong want to smash, but Strong not smash.
Danse would never get out of his suit near Strong unless he absolutely had to. Sole insisted that the abomination wasnât going to be a problem but he didnât believe it for a second. It took all of his willpower to not open fire on the thing whenever he saw it. Sole has poor taste in companions...
X6:
X6 wouldnât care. He would consider taking this opportunity to get rid of the high ranking Brotherhood soldier, but it would make Sole upset and would do relatively little to the Brotherhood as a whole.Â
Ask and ye shall recieve! I decide the winner on Hancockâs one by their special stats. How the hell does Hancock have such good stats and heâs still terrible in a fight??

How will the companions react to a sole who speaks foreign language (like,, they could speak english too but they often use their native language)
Cait:
As crazy as it sounds, sheâs actually a little distressed. In case you havenât noticed, she speaks with a heavy accent so if you happen to as well..well the likelihood that most wastelanders will be able to clearly understand you is somewhat low.
Regardless of that, she thinks itâs hilarious if you cuss people out in your native language.
Curie:
Another one of the sweeties with a thicc accent (plus she speaks French occasionally), so she finds some level of comfort in you being able to speak different languages.
If you happen to speak French, oh sweet baby lord, youre gonna get an earful by an overly excited synth woman.
Danse:
Automatically sees the tactical use in your linguistic abilities and is openly quite impressed.
Sometimes asks you how to say certain words in your language, then will write them down and study over it. It may be useless to do it, but one day heâd actually like to be able to carry a conversation with you in your native tongue.
Deacon:
Ummm, youâre spies. This is an advantageous attribute you bring to the team and he is loving it. He knows a couple languages as well, so if you happen to share one in common, heâll speak in super secret âcodeâ with you..even around HQ.
Gage:
He thinks itâs pretty amusing, especially if you switch between languages like some people do. Nonetheless, he will occasionally become frustrated if you speak with too thick of an accent and he canât understand your orders- but because of his fear of being cussed out....heâll bite his tongue.
Hancock:
Oooh~, Hancock is all about the unique and exotic. You speaking different languages around him immediately piques his interest and heâs quick to ask you to speak in it more often. Even if he canât understand it, he finds it insanely beautiful.
Macready:
Will be the kind to assume that youre talking shit behind his back...
Maxson:
Depending upon your native tongue, heâll likely reassign you to the linguistics division or have you teach communications a couple things. Bringing something new to the BoS is a sure fire way to gain his favor btw.
Nick:
Finds your ability to go between languages insanely charming. However he sometimes serves as translator without you asking him, which leads to you grabbing his trench coat and reassuring him that you can still speak English.
Old Longfellow:
Doesnât really care either way out of all honesty...speak it if you please, he doesnât have too strong of feelings.
Piper:
You kidding? Why didnât you mention this in the interview? What if your language is extinct now???? ADVGWHSISJEBR?!??!?
Preston:
Gets real interested in your culture more than your language. Even if youâre native to America and just speak a different language, heâll still be excited to learn about what you know and can tell him about. If you like to sing, please do!
Sturges:
Honestly thinks itâs pretty nifty. He just likes the sound of your accent when you speak...it admittedly sends chills down his spine.
X6-88:
It kind of causes a slight existential crisis. He thought he knew everything about father, so finding out that his parent obviously...different...made him overthink perhaps a little too much.

Bless us with more Chromeskull! â€ïžWith a feisty and sarcastic s/o?
Jesse Cromeans/Chromeskull x Feisty and Sarcastic Reader
You two would probably meet when you start working at his company
Think sexy secretary and her devious boss... at least thatâs what Jesse saw
During youâre interview, he could tell you werenât exactly qualified to replace Preston... but something about the way you walked into the room
Jesse chose to conduct the interviews himself--mask and all
He wanted someone fearless... and damn if that wasnât you to a T
The very first thing you said when you saw him:
âFuck, I forgot it was creepy killer mask day! Wouldâve worn my skin suit if I knew.â
And all with a goddamn smirk... yep, he was gonna like you.
From then on it was a myriad of snide comments about your skirts and frequent âaccidentalâ touching
...and that was just on your end.
What can you say? The whole tall, dark, and mysterious vibe Jesse had got you hot, despite the adamant warnings from your co-workers
Of course, you know Jesseâs a killer. That was the fun of it all!
Literally poking the bear every time you leaned a little too far over the desk to hand him something... it felt fucking exhilarating
Of course, Jesse would eventually have to punish you for all your teasing
Heâd call you into the office, his jacket already off, and ready to play
âDo you understand why I called you in here, Y/N?â he signed
âWhatever it was, it was definitely Spannâs fault.â
You couldnât quite tell if it was a laugh or a growl under the mask but you were glad it got you off the hook
At least until Jesse started walking closer and closer to you until you were pressed up against the door of the office
He slowly reached over, you could only assume for one of his knives...and locked the doorÂ
âFucking finally!â you groaned and immediately pulled his neck down to kiss and suck on
His moans were all too perfect, and for a moment, you actually thought heâd let you take control
God were you wrong...
He suddenly grabbed you by the waist and practically carried you over to his desk to sit on, taking control and undressing you quickly
To his surprise, you werenât exactly wearing much underneath
Seeing his confused look, you explained, âWhoops, mustâve forgotten my panties this morning. I probably left them on the floor after I... finished.â
There was no confusing the guttural noise that left his throat
And for a split second... you kinda regretted being such a smart ass

SEASON OF GLASS (AND ITâS COVER)...
I used a photo I took of Johnâs blood-stained glasses on the record cover. The record company called me and said the record shops would not stock the record unless I changed the cover. I didn't understand it. Why? They said it was in bad taste. I felt like a person soaked in blood coming into a living room full of people and reporting that my husband was dead, his body was taken away, and the pair of glasses were the only thing I had managed to salvage â and people looking at me saying it was in bad taste to show the glasses to them. "I'm not changing the cover. This is what John is now," I said.
â âONOBOXâ by Yoko Ono.
''What was I supposed to do, avoid the subject? ...A lot of people advised me that I shouldn't put that cover on the record, but I really wanted the whole world to see those glasses with blood on them and to realize the fact that John had been killed. It wasn't like he died of old age or drugs or something. People told me I shouldn't put the gunshots on the record, and the part where I start swearing, 'Hate me, hate us, we had everything,' which was just letting those feelings out. I know if John had been there, he would have been a lot more outspoken than I was. He was like that.
''My bedroom was right on 72d Street and on the night of the death, the fans kept playing this one record of John's. I was like a zombie, just lying there and hearing him sing 'Imagine' over and over and over. For about 10 days, it went on like that...â
â âYOKO ONO ASKS, 'WAS I SUPPOSED TO AVOID THE SUBJECT?'â by Robert Palmer (The New York Times, 1981)
John was killed, and it was very important for me to show that to the world, and for people to remember. Because I think that all of us are responsible of his death, of course including myself and both John and I were always trying to make a peaceful world. Â And itâs very ironical that John who loved peace so much, died in a violent way.
â Yoko Ono, Ina France television interview (1981)
âŠIâve seen a floor with a pond of blood. And that was the reality. And this was like a very, very, mild expression of that. And I was totally amazed that people felt that I was exploiting him. It wasnât that at all. I felt the oneness with him and we were saying, `Please look at me. This is what you did to me.â I mean, thatâs what John wanted to say, I think.
â Yoko Ono, âOno--Oh Yes!â by Jody Denberg (The Austin Chronicle, 1997)
âŠI would stick by it. That made that album not commercial and the record company called me and said, âLook, you have to change the cover otherwise we canât put it out because all the shops say theyâre not going to carry it.â And I said, âWell, weâll just have to take a chance.â To have those glasses on the cover was important because it was a statement and you have to understand that it was like John wanted you guys to see those glasses. Because that was what was done to him. I saw what was done to him. It was worse than that cover shows. Iâve seen the worst of it and that cover was just like a very mild statement, a little message to you from John.
-- Yoko Ono, âWho the Hell Does Yoko Ono Think She Isâ by Tom Hilbert (Q Magazine, 1988)
When I started to sing I noticed my throat was all choked up and my voice was cracking. I seriously thought maybe I should quit making the album because, as some people had advised me, âIt was not the timeâ.
But the question was, when would it be the time? I thought of all the people in the world whose voices were choking and cracking for many reasons. I could sing for them. I could call it a âchokeâ or âcrackleâ. Well, wasnât that what the critics had been saying about me for all these years anyway? That gave me a laugh, and it became easier. Many amazing things happened during the recording session. All I can say is that John was right there with me, busy trying to arrange things for me. That is why this album is not dedicated to him. He would have been offended. He was one of us.
â Yoko Ono (notes on the album)
...Ms. Ono, 80, posted on her Twitter account four antigun messages with an image of the blood-splattered glasses that Lennon was wearing when he was gunned down outside their Manhattan apartment building on Dec. 8, 1980. With the photo, once used on a 1981 album cover and in a 2000 antigun billboard campaign, she wrote: âThe death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him. Yoko Ono Lennon.â
...She also used the image of the bloodied glasses on billboards that she paid for to help carry her message [of ending gun violence] in New York, Los Angeles and Cleveland. She used language similar to what she posted on Twitter this week on some of the billboards: âOver 676,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980.â
â âYoko Ono Details Why She Posted Lennonâs Bloodied Glasses on Twitter â by Jennifer Preston (The Lede)
John Lennonâs name isnât mentioned in any lyric, but his presence is everywhere â from the cover photo of his shattered eyeglasses to Onoâs moving liner notes, which explain that the album wasnât dedicated to Lennon because âhe was one of us.â
â âSeason of Glassâ by Stephen Holden (album review for The Rolling Stone)
[Season of Glass] marks the point in time when we all lost a legend and not only encapsulates Yoko's sadness, but the world's. But more than her sadness, Season of Glass displays Ono's remarkable strength through this period.
â Ryan Schreiber
"Season of Glass was the salvation for me," Yoko said of her 1981 album. "I had gone into an uncharted period in my life, with no reference points... Music was the most natural thing I could think of. It was part of our life." The album's cover is a photo of John's blood-spattered glasses. As painful as it was to take the photo, Yoko knew that only she could "get it right."
â âYoko Ono: Collector of Skiesâ by Nell Beram, Carolyn Boriss-Krimsky
For an artist who always had been uncompromisingly candid in her work, Ono's 1981 album Season of Glass, produced and released in response to Lennon's murder in December 1980, served as a deeply emotional--and inherently publicâcatharsis.
...And ultimately, Season of Glass offers heartbreaking testimony, not only through its wrenching music content, but directly on its face: Ono's photographic still life of Lennon's broken, blood-stained glasses next to a half full/empty glass of water on their apartment windowsill.Â
â âYes Yoko Onoâ by Alexandra Munroe, Bruce Altshuler, and Jon Hendricks
A glass half empty. Her dead husbandâs eyeglasses smeared with his blood. The window, the camera lens. All glass. Transparent. A misty rainy-day photograph viewing the New York City skyline through several gloomy horizons â taken from their bedroom window above Central Park. Their home. The city that John loved.
This was Yokoâs fragile world in December 1980.
...On the album cover, Yoko shares her nightmare â illustrating what the world had done to John and to her. Yoko reflects the horror right back on society, just as Jacqueline Kennedy wore her blood-stained Chanel suit in public for the remainder of the tragic day that she experienced the exact same trauma of seeing her husband killed in front of her. Yoko lets us see through the shattered window of her world and hides nothing â as always.
-- âSHATTERED. SEASON OF GLASSâ by Madeline Bocaro
âspring passes and one remembers oneâs innocence summer passes and one remembers oneâe exuberance autumn passes and one remembers oneâs reverence winter passes and one remembers oneâs perseverance
there is a season that never passes and that is the season of glassâ
â Yoko Ono (1980)

Beast Tamer SoSu
This is long and random but bare with me here
Sole survivor who is simply known as âThe beast tamerâ and they can tame pretty much any animal. Like they have a baby deathclaw with them at the time and itâs an albino and it will lay in their lap or curled up beside them all protective like because they are basically the mother to the deathclaw and all the animals they tame they treat like their own children. Like theyâre known for providing settlements with protection such as pacified mirlurks if they live by the ocean, or mutant hounds to patrol the boarders.
The first time the companions meet the sole survivor aka âThe Beast Tamerâ they have their baby albino Deathclaw curled up beside them and a Mutant hound curled up behind them. They also have some regular junk-yard dogs with them, and some wolves from far-harbor too, possibly even a baby gatorclaw egg? Oh and we canât forgot a couple of cats in the general area. Maybe even some birds? Like the sole survivor is just humming some lullaby to the Deathclaw and theyâre just like âoh hello. What can I do for you?â All calm like theyâre not surrounded by a bunch of dangerous animals.
Like I can imagine a Full grown deathclaw walking up behind them and acting like a big baby wanting attention and 10/10 the sole survivor would let Deacon name one of the deathclaw hatchlings Fluffy.
I can also see the BoS trying to recruit them because they could get even more powerful allies on their side. Even if they were abominations, however due to that notion the sole survivor wouldnât side with them because that would mean the BoS would wipe out their animal friends.
And now, for a couple companions and what I think kind of animal they would get from the sole survivor.
Nick - Dogmeat or a Junk-yard dog, dogmeat would probably be his first pick and since he already knows dogmeat. But who wouldnât want two dogs who can kick ass and help you track down suspects?
Hancock - he would probably try and convince sole he was responsible enough to look after some type of Clawâ but would end up with a super mutant hound instead and would end up loving it. The hound would be super loving too, of its new owner once its gotten use to them, and sole has taught Hancock the proper care. Or maybe even a snake if they managed to survive, ((just imagine Hancock carrying around this tiny little garder snake in his hand.))
Deacon - no secret he would want to keep the Clawâ he named fluffy but Desdemona would probably say no, but deacon would keep it anyway. Probably sneak out to meet Sole so the Clawâ and itâs mom got use to Deacon and knew it could trust Deacon with its child.
X6 - He would probably get some cats, he seems more like a cat person and the cats would definitely fit him. Theyâd probably learn to perch onto his shoulder and do commands (somehow this man has extreme patients) that would get the cat to do certain small tasks.
Preston - Heâd probably be very hesitant about letting the animals into the settlements at first but after seeing how the kids like to the play with the dogs ((who are very gentle with the kids)) heâll let them slide. Though personally I do think heâd probably like cats much like X6 does. But still loves to play with the Junk-yard dogs.
Maccready - absolutely not, he would be terrified out of his mind when he saw Duncan petting some Deathclaw sole had tamed. Oh god he wouldnât want anything to do with them at first, but I think in the end heâd get a bird. Seems fitting for a sniper a birds eye view if you will. Maybe a crow or a raven, or a red-tailed hawk if they still survived. ((Bonus ; almost had a heart attack when he finds sole trying to teach Duncan how to tame the animals like Deathclaws))
Piper - some kind of marmot if they survived and it would probably be a Ferret letâs be real here. Nat would love it to death and much like Duncan might get caught taking some lessons from sole though Piper might be a little more forgiving if she got a five hour interview with sole.

whisper fiddles with the knobs on her pipboy, switching between diamond city radio and radio freedom every other word. the minutemen are calling for their general. the ink spots donât want to set the world on fire. and whisper remembers everything that happened yesterday.
but dr. amari should be finished with nick by now. itâs been exactly fifteen minutes since irma left and came back, and the hostess has even set up a customer in their own memory pod. a ghoul, likely reliving pre-war memories. eyes closed, a small smile tugs at the corner of their mouth. happy memories to relive, at least.
whisper remembers - almost everything.
click, set the world. click, calling general alice. click, on fire. click, to the castle. click, i just. click, calling general - click, want to start - click, alice to - click, a flame - click, the castle - click, in your heart.
âhey, doll.â
ânick!â whisper jumps to her feet and looks him over. hard to tell how heâs doing, glowing eyes giving away absolutely nothing. he doesnât wear any signs of fatigue or duress. at least his voice is his own. âhow are you feeling?â
he brings a cigarette to his lips. doesnât light it. maybe itâs just about the comfort of it. âiâm fine. the doctor told me about my passenger. he didnât do anything to you, did he?â
with a jerk of her head, she leads him to a side room, empty but for another memory pod and decorated with old paintings on the walls. whisper walks to the middle of the room, her arms crossed. nickâs eyes narrow. âalice, if he hurt you - â
she raises a hand. âwe talked. we - really just talked.â
âyou talked.â
even to her ears it doesnât sound real, and sheâs the one that sat with the mercenary. the man that murdered her husband, stole her child. talked. she runs a hand through her hair. âdo you remember anything?â
ânot a lot after leaving the memory pod.â
âand before that?â
he stares, frowning. âhow much do you want me to remember, doll?â
she sighs. too much unraveling. âideally? nothing. i only ask that you donât talk to anyone about it.â
âand your friend?â
deacon - âespecially not him. everything is.. complicated.â
after a moment, he nods. âthings often are. that little boy, was that your son?â
âshaun,â she says on a sigh, her eyes watering. âyes, it was.â happy, reading comics, smiling.
ânot a baby, though.â
whisper frowns. âno, i guess - i lost more than i thought.â two hundred years is two hundred years, but to lose those years watching their son grow up on top of everything?
nick grunts, tucks away the unlit cigarette. âcan i ask how long you were down there?â
âthis is the real interview, then?â she tries at a smile. âtwo hundred years.â
âyou were frozen pre-war, then.â
âthe last thing i saw was the bomb drop before the vault elevator took us down.â she keeps her breathing surprisingly even. but she doesnât want to talk about more, has to steer this away from her or she might remember that she canât - ânow that you know, i have a question of my own.â
âwhatever you need.â
âare you the real nick valentine? iâm familiar with him, and operation winterâs end, but this - â she waves a hand. âi donât understand how he would be here.â
âi - â he pauses, trying to collect himself. âhe was being treated at CIT for PTSD, and they scanned his brain. the institute took those memories and uploaded them into me. kelloggâs werenât the first memories iâve had in my head.â
âi - iâm sorry. i didnât mean to put you through that again.â
âthe institute is to blame for this one, doll. iâm here to help you, and you arenât alone.â she blinks, eyes stinging, and throws her arms around him. just to know that someone else understands that shock of waking up in a different world.
a soft knock on the door makes her step back, and deacon sidesteps into the room. âwhy am i never invited to parties anymore?â
nick looks to her, unsure, so she goes along with it, like theyâre who they were before yesterday and she can still look him in the eye. âyour invite must have gotten lost in the mail,â as if he understands the postal service. she taps a finger against her chin. âdid i even mail it? who knows these days.â
deacon pouts. âmaybe one day iâll be cool enough for your parties, partner. anyway, i bring word from the commonwealth!â he announces like a town crier. thankfully, nick prompts deacon to continue. âour stalker from last night was... apprehended the other night.â he looks to her - or somewhere over her shoulder. âyou remember?â
âi remember,â she says, a little too quickly.
deacon shoves his hands in his pockets. âhancockâs men killed him. turns out he was a synth. they picked him up going into the rexford.â
âlooking for us,â she figures. âdodged a bullet there. literally.â
nick looks between the two of them, probably deducing where the âcomplicatedâ is coming from. âwell,â he starts, stepping around deacon toward the door, âiâll leave you two to handle the rest. alice,â she looks over to him. âremember what i said.â
âthank you, nick.â
he leaves them alone with only their tension to fill the void. though deacon still stands with his hands in his pockets, his shoulders are still held high. whisper, for her part, wraps her arms around her stomach, looking everywhere but at her partner. now, sheâs face to face with her shame, her guilt. itâs only been a month since nateâs death - has she been unfaithful in a way? acted in poor taste?
deaconâs likely here to tell her sheâs lost her position in the railroad. crossed a line because there were definitely better options in that alley, and she didnât choose those. instead she gave into the cigarette smoke on her tongue.
maybe sheâs the only one worried about it, the only one making a big deal of it, because deacon breaks the silence with a grin. âsecrets, partner?â
she attempts to mirror the grin. âplanning our next party, obviously. consider this your invitation.â
âlooking forward to it,â he says. then, âthought you took off without me this morning. went to face the horrors of the glowing sea all by yourself.â he adds, âagain,â almost sternly.
she left before he woke up. leaving a note might have been proper etiquette, but really she just wanted to avoid a morning-after conversation. oh well. âdidnât want the radio to wake you up.â she tunes into the radio. static hisses from the speakers before radio freedom begins to play. the recorded message loops again, calling her to the castle. someone is there who wants to meet with her. repeat.
didnât take long for them to call her back, so she has to wonder who this person is. not a regular recruit.
âwell, then, whatâs the plan?â
she turns off the radio. âi have to go see what this is about, obviously.â she leans back against the wall, feels wallpaper flake off as she shifts. âmaybe cash in on that brotherhood information, get a set of power armor that can withstand the radiation.â her suit from the museum of freedom is missing parts and the parts it does have need to be repaired, still. another group could scavenge for new parts -
âi can hear the gears turning in your head, you know.â he sighs, eyes the door. âin that case, iâll head back to hq, tell them about our tail, and see if tomâs got anything that can help us in the sea.â
whisper stands up straight. âyou donât - you donât have to go out to the glowing sea.â
âof course i do. knowing you, youâre going to throw yourself at a deathclaw the size of a skyscraper if iâm not there.â
she huffs. âi would not.â then it hits her: heâs not coming with her to the castle, to the brotherhood.
itâs like he reads her mind in her sudden frown. âi shouldnât show my face too often on that flying tin can or else iâll have to get a new one.â
âand iâm so fond of this one, too.â that gets a genuine smile out of him. âi understand.â not that she wants to. what she wants to do is ask him to stay with her, her singular constant in this new world. but sheâs monopolized his time enough. âhopefully this whole.. endeavor doesnât take long.â
âeager to go swimming? iâll find you when youâre finished.â
âgo back to your old stalking habits?â
he grins. âyou leave a trail wherever you go. youâre hard to miss.â
she clears her throat. âsure. take care of yourself, okay?â
he looks like he means to move toward her, but instead veers to the door. âyou, too.â
-
boston seems bigger when sheâs alone. without deaconâs constant chatter, she has only herself to talk to, her inner monologue to keep her company. herself and travis on the radio, tearfully talking about how theyâre all going to die, the poor guy sounding like heâs two seconds away from a full blown panic attack. lately, she can relate, but she keeps the radio on for white noise, humming along to the songs she knows from before.
travis does eventually report the minutemen taking the castle, along with their influence spreading throughout the commonwealth. she smiles, âsee, deacon, weâre making a,â she trails off, âdifference.â at least no one can hear her talking to herself. before the war, she would definitely have earned herself some strange looks.
nowadays, thereâs no one to even notice her walking down the street. with a sigh, she continues her solo journey toward the castle.
-
water sloshes against her ankles as she walks down the flooded street to fort independence. but where the street used to be littered with moss and seaweed, carried in from mirelurks as they crawl in from the sea, the roads and even nearby buildings have been cleared. whisper jogs the rest of the way up the street and runs into a familiar face near another abandoned building.
âgeneral! good to see you.â
âsturges? whatâre you doing out here?â
he gestures around to the street, the buildings. âpreston wanted me to do some tuning up on the area. whole place got hit hard by mirelurks, but preston said youâre turning the whole place into a new settlement?â
âthatâs the goal. maybe some place their families can live, so theyâre close.â like an old military base without the strict military rules. minuteman families and anyone else just looking for a safe place to stay.
âi get it, boss. they were talking about some lady at the castle needinâ you though.â he heaves an exaggerated, put-upon sigh. âiâll be cleaninâ up the streets if you need me.â
she nods. âthen be careful out here by yourself. some mirelurks might still be hiding in the shallows.â
he pats a flare gun on his utility belt. âiâm not alone, maâam.â
-
ronnie shaw recites the history of the minutemen while they clear out more rubble in the generalâs quarters. past generals, past battles, the people sheâs lead and followed in her time. ronnie wouldnât be out of place pre-war, dressed in her army fatigues with a beret atop a head of short cropped hair. the way she tells the stories, with a voice rough after years of service but warm enough to relay the fond memories - it makes whisper think sheâs done something right drawing her here.
preston says as much as they heave the rubble out of the way. âi figure we must be doing something right if ronnie shawâs come back.â
the woman enjoys talking in the way mama murphy enjoys talking. to be heard and remembered. to pass on her knowledge, whether it be drug induced future-sight or memories of the past. shaw still leads them with purpose, pointing out landmines hidden under scattered pieces of paper even as she notes which general might have left them behind. whisper disarms each one while penny puts them in her bag.
the group skirts around barrels of radiation and weaves through the storerooms of the basement. there are supplies sturges could use for the neighborhood and more food to back their stores. across the storeroom, under the other end of the courtyard, is another side room lined with barrels of gunpowder.
âjust through here. on the other side should be stairs up to the armory.â
âokay.â whisper steps through to the other room, preston at her shoulder. theyâre greeted immediately with the sound of machinery booting up, low beeps and a sharp hiss of air. whisper draws deliverer and aims at the other end of the room at a sentry bot lifting itself to its full height. âwhat is that?â
ronnie pulls up behind them, her shotgun drawn, before lowering it. âthatâs just sarge. he was programmed to protect the armory.â
âso, weâre safe?â whisper asks, and ronnie hums in agreement.
âdonât know âbout that one,â penny says, pushing forward, her laser musket buzzing with energy.
âintruders,â sarge intones in a deep, robotic voice. âleave the area or be met with lethal force.â
âcâmon, sarge. weâre minutemen. you donât have to protect anything from us,â ronnie reasons.
sarge halts with a low series of beeps. âminutemen database corrupted,â he states after a moment. âintruders, leave the area or be met with lethal force.â
âgeneral,â preston hisses, backing slowly out of the room. âwe canât fight that thing in close quarters like this.â
heâs right. the tunnels under the castle are capped with an arched ceiling, and sarge stands as high as the arch, with his body half as wide as the room itself. and then thereâs the fact that sarge has miniguns for arms.
âpenny, ronnie, back up,â whisper commands. âwe arenât prepared for this. letâs retreat for now.â
âthe armory - â
âisnât going anywhere. we come back with bigger guns and we move sarge by force if we have to.â
whisper waits until penny has backed up to the other room to make her own retreat. however, sheâs stopped by sarge breaking his repeated warning to leave. âdatabase accessed,â he says suddenly, ignoring whisper raising her gun once more. âcitizen of the united states, acknowledged.â sarge lowers his weapons and seems to stand down.
âwhat did that thing just say?â penny peers back through the door.
sarge picks himself up again, provoked to an alert stance. âintruder - â
âpenny, back up.â she does, and sarge cools back down. âyouâve got to be kidding me,â she mutters to herself. âiâll see what i can do from here, i guess?â
âsargeâs terminal is at the back of the room. itâs a shame, but if heâs corrupted, we have to shut him down. the password is... uh,â ronnie pauses. âone if by land. try that one.â
âokay,â whisper says slowly, and approaches sarge with as much caution. the sentry bot shifts slightly to follow her, turning on the wheels of its legs. whisper picks up her pace to the terminal at the end of the room.
âcivilian, step away.â
whisper types the password quickly, one if by land, and - nothing.
âcivilian - â
âronnie, that didnât work,â whisper shouts over sarge. he looms over her, one minigun pressing between her shoulder blades.
âtry: for the commonwealth,â ronnie shouts back.
sheâs almost knocked over when sarge whips around to the door, but she takes the distraction for what it is. for the commonwealth - nothing. quickly, she tries two if by sea and... no. ânot it.â
âcivilian, you have ten seconds to cease this activity.â nine, eight -
behind her, she hears preston and penny pressing for another password as sarge turns his attention back to her. seven, six, five - âokay, okay. united we stand!â
four, three, two - whisper types as quickly as she can, the sound of miniguns spinning up loud in her ears. there - and thankfully the option isnât difficult to find. one - shut down, sarge.
âshutting down,â sarge announces over the pounding in her ears. hands braced against the desk, whisper sighs heavily.
âgeneral!â preston runs up to her. âjesus, are you all right?â
âall in a dayâs work,â she says. âiâm fine, preston. thank you.â
down a level from sargeâs shutdown option is the key to open the door to the other side of the tunnels. the door swings open to another room, and there they find the long dead body of a previous minuteman general dressed in clothing that wouldnât be out of place in a museum: a navy blue coat over a dirty white dress shirt, with four stars stitched into the collar. though the late general supplemented heavy coatâs defenses with a custom combat armor chest piece. and there, on the mummified generalâs head, is whisperâs true reward.
âmy hat,â she says lamely, drawing attention from her companions.
preston catches on quicker than the others, bending down and picking the tricorn hat off the body. âyour hat.â he chuckles, likely remembering their conversation from so long ago. it fits neatly on her head, but it smells, so she carries it under her arm instead. it can wait until she finds a box of abraxo.
from there, they head back upstairs to find themselves on the other side of the castleâs hollow walls. ronnie flips a switch, and the metal arm blocking the entrance to the courtyard rises. a handful of minutemen gather nearby to be led to the armory.
even whisperâs jaw drops when they get there. shelves full of stockpiled microfusion cells, different kinds of laser muskets, turrets, grenades, and schematics for each. on the back table is another set of blueprints for artillery. âthere we go. thatâs what weâre here for,â ronnie says around the commotion of the other minutemen moving supplies from the armory.
âpreston, can you get sturges?â to ronnie, she says, âhe can put these together in the morning.â
âgood. over there are smoke grenades, you can use it to test the aiming on those old things.â
whisper cants her head. âyouâre not staying?â
âi think iâm getting too old for this stuff, you know? not sure if i could have kept up if sarge actually attacked.â ronnie shrugs.
but whisper can see the reluctance in her. âwe could use someone like you around here. once people know ronnie shawâs on board? more people will join the minutemen, and theyâll need to be trained.â
ronnie smiles wide, easily swayed. âall right, kid, you got me. i can see youâve got a good thing going here. hard not to listen to all the tales that kid on the radio tells.â she sighs, wistful. âtime to whip these youngâuns into shape.â ronnie makes a show of rolling up her sleeves before walking over to a group of minutemen carrying a crate of ammunition.
âoh boy,â comes pennyâs voice at her shoulder. âwhat have you done?â she asks, even as she grins at the sight. the younger minutemen stand up straighter with ronnie at their backs, barking orders.
âmade things more entertaining around here.â whisper grins.
penny exhales heavily. âspeaking of entertainment, whereâs your shadow?â at whisperâs furrowed brow, penny clarifies: âthe one with the bad wig.â
it surprises a laugh out of her. âheâs, uh - â her smile fades. âheâs working on something else,â she finishes lamely.
âtrouble in paradise,â penny surmises. whisper canât be bothered to correct her, not when sturges approaches soon after. preston doesnât join them, instead follows ronnie shaw and the other minutemen. she leads sturges over to the artillery blueprints and breaks away from the others as they prepare to work into the night.
chatter that would have kept her awake now acts as white noise while she attempts to fall asleep. no one comes after her; her job is done until the next step with the artillery, and even then they shouldnât need her help with testing. preston can be trusted to know if a shell hits its target.
whisper presses the heel of her hands against her eyes. sarge recognized her. pulled her from some old database, knew she was out of place. everything coming apart all at once. but sheâs one step closer to shaun, and thatâs what she focuses on as finally falls asleep.

Mitchell Leisen: Howâs About It?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/116c6e27fbe466d4607e3516e6b4b723/f8d005d6b112ed53-71/s250x250_c1/95a3a9008123ae6d641ef73f6ffae425584f044f.jpg)
Mitchell Leisen was a major American film director. He belongs in the first rank, not the second tier, where he has often been placed by those who value the scripts he was given by Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett more than what he actually did with those scripts. Leisenâs name was usually written in sloping cursive in his opening credits, and that set the mood for what he had to offer. His was a gentle style, a deliberately unobtrusive style, smooth and gliding, attentive to nuances, visual and emotional.
Leisen made a point of nearly always moving the camera only when it is following a character who is moving right along with it, and the edits in his movies are as invisible as possible. He made three films that are undisputed classics: Easy Living (1937), written by Sturges, Midnight (1939), written by Wilder and Brackett, and Remember the Night (1939), written by Sturges. All three of these classic Leisen movies are partly about pretending to be something youâre not in order to move up or over into another social atmosphere or class and take on a new identity, and this theme is something that always interested Leisen particularly.
He got his start making costumes and dressing sets for Cecil B. DeMille, and he also made costumes for Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. That training shows through in his later work, that sense of fantasy and beauty for its own sake. Leisen had a fetish for absolute authenticity when he did period pictures, and he took this fetish to nearly Erich Von Stroheim lengths if he had the money to spend. Remember the peacock headdress that he designed for Gloria Swanson in DeMilleâs Male and Female (1919), or the sexy harem pants he put on Fairbanks for The Thief of Bagdad (1924), or the barely-there garments he designed for Claudette Colbert in The Sign of the Cross (1932) and you can get a first sense of Leisenâs aesthetic: hopeful, fantastical, erotic. And he was a pretender himself on some of these early movies because he was very skillful at making sets and crowd scenes look more opulent than they actually were given some of the budgets he had to work with.
He took the reins from nominal director Stuart Walker for two films that proved his range: Tonight Is Ours (1933), a high comedy that begins with a sexy masked ball, and The Eagle and the Hawk (1933), as grim and concentrated an anti-war film as you will find from this era. Leisen next graduated to prestige pictures like Cradle Song (1933) and Death Takes a Holiday (1934), with its high-flown Maxwell Anderson script. Leisen was fond of Death Takes a Holiday all his life, and he even wanted to re-make it in the late 1940s, but it has not held up as well as some of his lesser-known pictures from the 1930s.
After Murder at the Vanities (1934), a backstage movie with some odd musical numbers, Leisen took flight with three pictures that demonstrated the full scope of his talent. What makes a really great director, a major director? The ability to take a poor script, like the one Leisen was given for Behold My Wife! (1934), and make it into something that moves like a dream and seems inevitable. While you watch Behold My Wife!, there is a double consciousness of how outlandish and slapdash the plot and dialogue are and how Leisen transcends this through pacing, framing, and staging, so that there is always something to delight the eye. Leisen movies generally have a difficult-to-describe kind of creamy look, as if every person and table and chair were covered in the same sort of protective satin sheen.
He used a similarly fast, super-controlled pace for Four Hours to Kill! (1935), another backstage movie where Leisen himself plays the orchestra leader but you never see the numbers on stage. A kind of musical proto-noir, this movie depends on Richard Barthelmess, who is playing a criminal waiting to be taken to jail, and Leisen is alert to Barthelmessâs needs and sensitive to his big scene, where his character talks about his unhappy past. And then Leisen was given a script (by Norman Krasna) and two stars, Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray, that were particularly congenial to his style, and the result was his first classic, Hands Across the Table (1935), a rather anguished comedy about love and the urge for security. Leisen had mastered form, and now he mastered the content that interested him, good-bad people navigating their own wants and desires and what they will do for them. For Leisen, mixed emotions are really the only emotions possible.
In all of his most characteristic films, Leisenâs characters are at a crisis point and need to decide to take a chance and see what they can get away with to become another version of themselves. There is lots of comedy in a situation like this, of course, but Leisen always hints at the dark underside of pretending. There is an American urge in these pictures that says, âWhat I say I am is what I am,â and that urge is usually naĂŻve (think of early Joan Crawford heroines). Leisen looks at this urge from a height of sophistication, almost always warmly and tenderly, but sometimes he lets a really grim insight slip through. Think of Carole Lombardâs anti-social asides in Hands Across the Table, or that harrowing scene where Barbara Stanwyck goes home to her grudge-holding and cruelly puritanical mother in Remember the Night and you will feel the hurt that animates Leisenâs search for a created world of his own.
In many ways, the 1930s were Leisenâs best creative period, where he turned out beautifully balanced and finished entertainments like 13 Hours by Air (1936). He was a romantic who had a special way of visually enfolding the lovers in his movies that is almost Frank Borzage-like, and he glorifies very different women in what must be the best close-ups of their careers: look at some of the close-ups of the melancholy Sylvia Sidney in Behold My Wife! and then look at the close-ups of the wised-up Joan Bennett in 13 Hours by Air and see how Leisen gives them the same glamorizing treatment without ever losing what makes them so individual. Even pure assignments like Artists and Models Abroad (1938) glow with a kind of dreamlike assurance, as if to say, âWhy shouldnât a comedy look beautiful?â
And when Leisen had a meatier script, like Swing High, Swing Low (1937), which also starred Lombard and MacMurray, he was capable of virtuoso work that blended comedy and drama so seamlessly that itâs difficult to tell where one leaves off and the other begins. He did some Sturges-like slapstick for Easy Living, including the famous automat scene where the windows fly open and everybody grabs at the food, which was his idea. But for Remember the Night, Leisen pared down the Sturges script, cutting unnecessary scenes and verbose dialogue until he had what he wanted, a portrait of a hard-boiled woman who starts to long for the warmth of a âwhy not?â idealized mid-West home. Remember the Night is probably Leisenâs finest film, and a peak in his career, a comedy-drama or a dramatic comedy all whipped together until the consistency is exquisite and just right.
After the very sensitive Hold Back the Dawn (1941), a Wilder-Brackett script about a hard-boiled male gigolo (Charles Boyer) pretending to love a sheltered, repressed girl (Olivia de Havilland) until his feelings actually become genuine, Leisenâs career settled in for a few years to minor comedies, as if wartime austerity had affected his budgets, his scripts, and his imagination. In 1944, he did two movies in color, Lady in the Dark and Frenchmanâs Creek, one anti-feminist and one feminist, and both rather nightmarishly disconnected and self-indulgent.
Leisen was going through a crisis in his personal life by the mid-1940s, and it showed in his work. He was mainly gay, but he didnât want to be, and so he had married a fledgling opera singer (âa horrorâ according to the sharp-tongued Ray Milland) and he was carrying on a tortured affair with costumer Natalie Visart while also pursuing men. Leisenâs loyal secretary Eleanor Broder told David Chierichetti, the author of the definitive Leisen book, Mitchell Leisen: Hollywood Director, that her boss tried taking hormone shots at one point because he thought they might eradicate his homosexuality, but of course that didnât work. Leisen lived with the pilot Eddie Anderson in the late 1930s, and Anderson left him for Shirley Ross, the actress who talk-sings âThanks for the Memoryâ with Bob Hope in The Big Broadcast of 1938, an unusually sentimental scene within his work that Leisen insisted on. When that picture finished, he had a heart attack, and his health was never quite the same afterwards.
In the 1940s, after Visart had gotten pregnant with his child and lost it, Leisen took up with the dancer Billy Daniels, and his unhappiness grew. Daniels dances in what has to be Leisenâs worst feature, Masquerade in Mexico (1945), a semi-remake of Midnight that is so distracted and poorly timed that it would seem to give credence to Billy Wilderâs many complaints about Leisen over the years in interviews; if you were to watch Masquerade in Mexico right after Midnight, it would seem like a mark against Leisen as an artist in his own right rather than a servant of superior scripts where he could get them. Daniels is actually the only thing this movie has going for it: heâs an exciting dancer, and an intriguing screen presence, sexy, petulant, a little dangerous. Many in Leisenâs inner circle disliked Daniels, but maybe Masquerade in Mexico might work if it could just be Daniels dancing as Leisen watches.
The blandness of the dĂ©cor in something like Suddenly Itâs Spring (1947) is a real comedown from his Art Deco 1930s pictures, but Leisen rallied in this period with some of his best and most personal films, starting with Kitty (1945), a sumptuous Gainsborough period piece with all the trimmings and a Pygmalion subject that activates all of Leisenâs interest in pretending and âpassingâ as something you are not. Best of all from this time is Song of Surrender (1949), an uncommonly severe movie about a New England girl named Abigail (Wanda Hendrix) who finds a way out of her repressive environment by listening to music. What Abigail feels in Song of Surrender is surely what Leisen himself must have often felt as a young man growing up in the mid-West at the turn of the last century, and so this picture, which he said he didnât much like, is his secret movie, his confession movie. Itâs a great film, daringly stark and stripped-down, and it is as unerringly paced and controlled as all of his best 1930s work; there are moments when it feels like a precursor to Jane Campionâs The Piano (1993) in its insistence on the will power needed for a woman to find aesthetic and sexual fulfillment.
Leisen did an intriguing noir with Stanwyck called No Man of Her Own (1950) and an overlooked, charming adaptation of J. M. Barrie called Darling, How Could You! (1951), which is filled with longing for family life that Leisen certainly knows is a fantasy like any of his others. (How poignant it is when Joan Fontaine says in that movie that if her children are going to love her they mustnât âthink me over first.â) He spent twenty years working at Paramount Studios, and he was a creature of the studio system; when the studio system went, so did he, but not before one more diverting small musical, The Girl Most Likely (1958), which was the last feature made at RKO. âWhen the studio decided we no longer needed a certain department, it was shut down and if we needed something after that, we had to make do ourselves,â Leisen said. âIt was really eerie.â
Ill-health and an unwarranted reputation for spending too much money kept Leisen mainly working for TV in his last years, so that he was back to low budgets and bringing in his own furniture to dress his sets. He had been fired from Bedevilled (1955) for hitting on one of the straight actors he was working with (the actor complained to MGM), and this put another shadow over his reputation. He had made Fred MacMurrayâs career, but when he tried to get work as a director on MacMurrayâs hit TV show My Three Sons, it was no go. âHe sent me a telegram asking for the job,â MacMurray said. âHe was, well, you know, a homosexual and he had gotten into some trouble on a picture he was making in Europe. With the three young boys we had working on the show, I just didnât think it was right. So I never answered the telegram.â
It was his women who stayed loyal to Leisen in his final years, both his secretary Broder (who was a lesbian), and his old lover Natalie Visart, who had never really gotten over her love for him and came to stay with him toward the end (Visartâs son Peter was killed in a gay-bashing in the 1970s). Leisenâs responses to David Chierichettiâs questions in their interview book are unfailingly candid, insightful, and juicy, but his standing has never ascended to the level of that of Preston Sturges or Billy Wilder, even though his visual style was far more developed than theirs, and his point of view arguably more sophisticated and certainly more kind-hearted. He was a romantic with an edge of disquiet, and this made for matchlessly rich pictures, pulsing with hope and with pain.
Leisen knew about all aspects of picture making, and he has the requisite number of classics for entrance to the pantheon, plus a whole slew of other pictures of interest. He made Remember the Night and Song of Surrender. He made Midnight and Kitty. And he made Easy Living and Darling, How Could You! Those are all heights, and from different periods, and they prove the consistency of his inventiveness and the distinctiveness of his talent. His creativity came out of personal unhappiness on the one hand and unprecedented creative license and support under the old Hollywood studio system on the other. We will not see that particular combination again.
