If I had a remembrance book, I would mark down how it was when we left our little house in the big woods to go west to Indian Territory. We had to go, Pa said, because so many people had come to live in the big woods, there wasn't enough game anymore for him to hunt and he feared we might go hungry. Ma said we might never again see Grandma and Grandpa, or Aunt Docia and Aunt Ruby and Uncle George. Though it made me sad, I still thought it a fine thing to go where there had never been a road before. We'd go where the land was more bountiful, he said, and he sold our house and land and cow, and packed whatever would fit in the wagon. I was glad Pa took his fiddle, for it makes a joysome sound. Mary was afraid to go, but I knew nothing bad could happen as long as we had Pa and Jack. Jack is my best and truest friend and Pa says there has never been a better watchdog. I knew there would be rivers to cross and hills to climb, and I was glad, for this is a fair land and I rejoiced that I would see it.

The real Carrie Ingalls from Little House in the Prairie briefly lived in Colorado
Carrie Ingalls Swanzey was the younger sister of famous "Little House on the Prairie" author Laura Ingalls Wilder. The cold climate of the north was hard on Carrie' asthma. She traveled to several places.

I didn't realize just how much Little Town on the Prairie meant to me as a book. I've barely started and every bit feels iconic. This one and Little House on the Prairie feel more like home than most of the other books do.

I swear if all the women Stephan King puts in his writing/films/etc just had one friend, their stories wouldn’t turn out so dark and sad

Ingall carefully tucked Touma into Kit’s embrace and stalked through the house, dragging every blanket he could find with him. Returning to the couch, he wrapped them all up and nestled behind Kit, curling his tails around them, emitting a soothing low rumble from deep in his chest.
And damn if that didn't work wonders to calm Kit. Her crying subsided clutching Touma close. Finally she went to kiss the top of his head and froze at the sight of him. "Are my eyes still messed up or is my baby gold?"
Before anyone else could answer Kagu leaned forward with a growing frown "Why are your eyes messed up? What in Stars name happened?"
Kit gave a watery laugh, even though none of their situation was funny, and briefly explained about the ambush at the bottom of the hill at the human half of the Shrine and that she'd been shot but Ingall and Kuko had come to the rescue.
There was a beat of silence before Kagu asked again anger growing in his tone "Your eyes?"
"Ah well... he wasn't lying when he said he'd killed me. For all intents and purposes my heart and breathing stopped." Kit managed to offer a watery smile "I think I lost some brain cells and connections from lack of oxygen and they're still working on repairing themselves." she held up her left hand where her pinky twitched on it's own accord "See? I'll be fine eventually." She assured them but her question about her baby being gold still stood.
