Hey, for your rugs, did you spin the wool for it?
heck no! 😹 I may make a lot of handspun, but I am not yet so filthy wealthy with it to chuck it in for a felted rug, and most of what I spin is not hardy enough for that kind of wear because I like to work with finer fibers.
I shop here for rug wool. 20lbs of neutral wool for $100, dye it whatever you like, or $50 for 5lbs assorted colors.
If you DO want to spin your own for this purpose, may I recommend a breed like Texel or Border Leicester? They are super long staple and hard-wearing fleeces, a bit rough on the hands to spin, but the final product is bulletproof...and also the kind of fabric that makes people think of wool as "scratchy" (good for carpet).

Vampire Short Story Pt.1
A while back, @roses-red-and-pink was interested in reading a story about a vrykolakas, a vampire from Greek Orthodox folklore. I started writing one featuring one of my original characters, and, since October is upon us, here goes part one.
Rain cascaded like blood from an open wound in the October nighttime dark, and Detective Inspector Deborah Kilroy was racing through the streets of Leicester in her car, clutching the wheel with her pale bony hands and staring at the satnav with intense sky-blue eyes foggy with sleep. She’d woken up at half past one in the morning for this, awoken by a call from Morgan. The traffic light turned green; she hit the accelerate and exhaled a breathy, desperate prayer. A left turn past a row of charity shops and independent cafés and straight ahead. 128 Goodwood Road, she repeated to herself. A few more minutes and the house was in view.
She undid the seatbelt and pulled her ivy-green raincoat over her tall, bony body, tucking her blonde ponytail into her hood. Having exited into the rain, she looked back and forth; no police cars. Walking towards the house, she pinned on her badge, and felt the second one in her pocket.
Before her was a small, compact house of tan-coloured brick with a square balcony over a porch sunken into the wall and a low wooden fence around a grass-filled front garden; it was rather like the house her grandparents lived in. The gate was already open, permitting her to walk down the brick path to the front door. She rang the doorbell, and a few seconds of silence dissipated when the door opened. Standing in the tan-carpeted and white-walled hallway was a tall, heavily-built Asian woman with black hair just past her shoulders and bright red lipstick, beckoning Deborah indoors. Deborah looked at the woman behind her while walking past family photos beside her and the wall, and saw a leather jacket and tight black trousers, the smell of blood emanating from her.
Deborah sat down in the living room on a burgundy pouffe next to tight-drawn white curtains embroidered with forget-me-not patterns, a television atop a stack of white Ikea drawers to her right and a sobbing young woman with her mother’s dark hair in a pale pink nightdress on a blocky red sofa. She breathed in awkwardly, disconcerted by the situation in front of her and the task ahead. Nonetheless, she spoke. “Detective Inspector Kilroy from the PIT. Your names?”
The woman on the sofa retracted her hands from her eyes, revealing a round, adolescent-looking face of a very pale brown, discoloured eyes of a darker hue staring sullenly and sorrowfully at Deborah. “Lucia. And what’s the PIT?”
“Police investigation team”, Deborah spat out mechanically. It was one of many assumed names for the group. “It’s just a nickname we have in the department.” That was the necessary follow-up, lest someone attempt to research them.
Deborah pulled her notepad and pen from her pocket and said, “so, what’s happened?”
The older woman – Mishita, she gave her name as – sat down, shuddered and began talking. “My son was killed by my husband.”
Deborah’s stomach rocked and reeled; even after years of being in the PIT and years more in the police, it always hurt to hear these stories. She looked up at Mishita, whose eyes were now wide and bloodshot.
“And my husband’s been dead for eighteen months.”
Deborah pushed down her shock – she was a member of the PIT, after all – and replied softly. “Describe what happened. Describe it in as much detail as you can.”
Several gasps and tears later and Mishita started narrating what had happened. “I woke up in the middle of the night and … and I heard my son screaming. He’s … he was … he was only eleven.” The tears quickly resumed. “I ran in and switched the light on and … and …”
While pitying the woman, Deborah was glad for the tears; it provided more time to write notes.
“I switched the light on, and there he was on his bed being pinned down … by a man; the fattest man I’d ever seen. And his neck … his neck had been slit open. Blood everywhere. I just … I just froze. And the man looked up at me.”
Deborah laid her pen to rest for a moment and looked at Mishita. “Continue.”
Mishita nodded. “I saw his face … it was my husband. His hair was all the way down to the waist and tangled … but it was him. He moved his hand down to my son’s throat and lick … Licked the blood of his hand.” Deborah nearly retched at the thought, but suppressed it well. “I started backing away, going to call the police … and he lashed out at me. Long sharp nails, cut my throat. And … and … I just ran and ran and left him to…” She collapsed into weeping.
Deborah cautiously asked “Are you ready to share anymore?”
Mishita shook her head. Deborah responded with “can I go to the room?” Mishita nodded.
Deborah finally stood before the door; even outside the room, the stench of blood was palpable. She reached into her left pocket for the blue plastic footwraps used when entering crime scene, and put them on. Breathing heavily, she pulled down the brassy handle on the pale wooden door, descended the step and choked. She looked at the white cupboard, a few flecks of blood visible and a shard of glass embedded in it. Still averting her gaze from the bed, she saw the bare floorboards littered with magazines and underwear and shards of broken glass. Her gaze moved slowly up the bed, seeing a waterfall of dried blood against the white sheets, her eyes tracing it back to its source.
It was a boy with the same dark hair (shaggy, in his case) and light brown skin as Lucia, wearing striped white and dark red pyjamas. But he was sprawled over the bed, his throat cut open along the side, fresh blood pouring onto a marble-hued mattress. The window had been smashed open, releasing the rain into the room, the spots of water matching the spots of blood.
She choked a little, and felt her eyes prick with tears. She recalled Stanhope, her mentor in the police force, murdered before her eyes by an occult monster. She pushed down the memory, subduing it with incantations of “must get the job done”. She pulled her phone out, and dialled Morgan; the woman who had adopted the position of Stanhope as she had been drawn into the PIT.
A half-minute and Morgan’s sharp-edged Welsh voice was heard. “What’s the situation?”
“Standing in the room with a dead kid. From what she said, it’s a vampire.”
Morgan’s voice grew harder. “Yeah, gathered that. What did it look like and do?”
Deborah searched her mind for the descriptions she had been given. “It looked like the woman’s husband; long hair and nails. Drank blood by putting its hand in the blood and lapping it up. Said it was the fattest man she’d ever seen.”
“Is her husband alive?”
“No” said Deborah.
Morgan replied “So d’you know what her husband looked like?”
Deborah responded “also no. I’ll ask her for a photo.”
Morgan hung up, and Deborah slipped her phone back into her pocket. She turned around and walked downstairs, shaking with the visions of the dead boy dancing in her mind.
Mishita and Lucia were waiting downstairs, huddled together, each with a cup of tea in shaking hands. Deborah sat down with them, declined the offer of tea, and began talking, her own voice shaking a little.
“What… what was your husband like?”
Mishita wiped her eyes and spoke slowly. “Not good, not good at all. Usually absent, often drunk, sometimes violent. Had a new scar every few weeks and a new mistress every few months; if my parents and his hadn’t chosen him I would have divorced him.”
Deborah shook her head while her pen hand scrambled over the pages of the notepad. Unhappy marriages, violent lives, trafficking, substance abuse – she’d seen it all. But there was little she could do but be kind and polite and track down the culprits. She was no therapist, but an investigator and hunter – formerly just of criminals, and now of the things behind the veil.
Deborah laid her pen down and looked up. “Can I have a photograph of him?”
Mishita nodded, and walked a little way away. She took a purse out of a bag suspended from a hook near the hallway, and from that a photograph. She walked back, and pressed it into Deborah’s hands. It was a wedding photo, showing an Asian man stocky with muscle – no more than twenty-five, looking at him – with slicked-back hair that terminated at his neck, with his arm around his new wife’s shoulder, both of them smiling. Mishita quietly asked “will this do? Do you want to take it?”
“Yes to the first, no to the second” said Deborah with a tone fit for a funeral, and got up. She shook Mishita’s hand while the two shared a silent gaze, and returned to the dark streets.

London’s Historic Cinemas
As some visitors at Park Avenue Hyde Park may be aware, the London Film Festival finished its annual tenure in the city for 2021. Hosting new work from international auteurs and up and coming filmmakers, the London Film Festival is one of the most influential and reputed in Europe, often seeing red carpet appearances from some of the best-known celebrities in the world.
Whilst the film festival has closed for this year, the cinemas that hosted this exciting festival are a massive part of the experience. From West End gems to cutting edge gateways into new districts, taking a trip to one of the many historic cinemas in London is an enriching way for Park Avenue J Hotel London Hyde Park guests to get to know the city. Below you can find out more about the revolutionary, historic and all-around magnetising cinemas in the English capital, and the types of events that take place there.
Regent Street Cinema
The Regent Street Cinema is one of the most famous in London and was opened in 1848 as a theatre for what is now the University of Westminster. Often cited as the “birthplace of British Cinema” the projection capabilities of the 187-seater on Regent Street allows it to screen 16 and 35 mm film reels as well as 4K digital formats. This means that cinephile guests at hotel accommodation London can expect a varied programme of often never before seen movies. Another historic accolade held by the Regent Street Cinema is that it was the first in the UK to show X-rated films, although now it is rather more family-friendly!
Prince Charles Cinema
A firm favourite for cult films, the Prince Charles Cinema is the home to some of London’s best movie marathons and is easily reachable for guests at the Park Avenue J Hotel London. From Lord Of The Rings all-nighters to late-night Halloween specials, Prince Charles was built in 1962 as a theatre but was developed into a cinema for adult movies before its expansion into a fan-favourite repertory cinema. The Prince Charles Cinema, which is located just off of Leicester Square, is famous for hosting regular Q & A’s and for its seasonal Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sound of Music singalong screenings, making it the proud last independent cinema standing in the West End.
Brixton Ritzy
Not only is the Brixton Ritzy a social hub and community-oriented south London cinema but is a Grade II listed building too. With its music and spoken word staging second-floor cafe bar, the Brixton Ritzy has been establishing itself as a cinema for the people since it was opened in 1911 as the “Electric Pavilion”. With a long history of name changes and left-wing political advocacy, the Ritzy is accessible for all and wears its historic London reputation proudly.
Rio Dalston
The Rio in Dalston is a two-screen cinema on Kingsland High Street that has been open since 1915. Originally an auctioneers shop, the cinema was redeveloped in the art deco style seen today in 1933 and was refurbished once again in the 1950s’ after suffering damage during the Blitz. Its history as a foreign language and adult film cinema during the 70s’ saw it grow into a much loved independent movie hub in later decades. Now the Rio is registered as a not for profit charity, in keeping with its long history and stellar international programming.

It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. There’s a lot of chatter and rustling from the audience, but the sound is otherwise excellent. Includes playbill scans.

NOTES: Really beautiful shot in an intimate space. Lots of zooms, but a good amount of wider shots too with a very limited (almost nonexistent) amount of heads. The lighting in this theater really liked my camera and I know the show almost “by heart” so I think I followed the action as well as possible. My battery died during the last song, but it starts at the very beginning with only one drop out during dialogue.

NOTES: An adorable and charming new show premiering at Berkeley Repertory. Samantha, Adam, and Savvy are fantastic in their roles, the music is gorgeous, and the sets are beautiful and clever. A very nice capture with just one quick dropout and one small head that can occasionally be seen at the bottom of the screen but never blocks the action. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show runs 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. A

NOTES: This show is magical, Phillipa is captivating, and the entire ensemble is perfectly quirky. There have been a few changes since Berkeley that tighten up the show a bit and make it ready for Broadway. A near perfect capture with no washout, no obstruction, and just one very quick dropout. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

Anastasia - Broadway - March 31, 2019 (Matinee) (Closing Night) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Christy Altomare (Anya), Cody Simpson (Dmitry), Constantine Germanacos (Gleb Vaganov), John Bolton (Vlad Popov), Vicki Lewis (Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch), Penny Fuller (Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna), Delilah Rose Pellow (Little Anastasia / Prince Alexei Romanov), Gail Bennett (Tsarina Alexandra), Tally Sessions (Tsar Nicholas II / Count Ipolitov), Allison Walsh (Olga Romanov), Shina Ann Morris (Tatiana Romanov / Dunya), Maria Briggs (Maria Romanov / Marfa), Molly Rushing (Young Anastasia / Paulina), Ken Krugman (Gorlinsky), Ken Krugman (Count Leopold), Allison Walsh (Odette in Swan Lake), Kyle Brown (Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake), Matt Wiercinski (Von Rothbart in Swan Lake), Wes Hart (Russian Doorman), Colby Dezelick, Janet Dickinson, Jennifer Smith, Justin Scott Brown
NOTES: Closing show! Or “rock concert” if you ask Christy Altomare. Yeah so this is a pretty obstructed video. Everyone was really excited so people were standing up, people were moving around, and honestly I had a little trouble paying attending to my viewfinder with all of the tears streaming down my face. Like Beetlejuice I would say it’s mostly like highlights, but all of the things that happen in the center part of the stage are captured really well and the video is DEFINITELY Christy centric. “Journey to the Past” is complete and gorgeous and you will cry. First act starts around when Anya meets Dmitry and the second act starts during “Crossing A Bridge.”

NOTES: This first attempt at a sequel to Annie, Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge, opened at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in December 1989 to universally disastrous reviews.
Extensive reworking of the script and score proved futile, and the project ended before officially reaching Broadway; newly surfaced video was filmed from the balcony. Shot between heads, and the balcony railing is visible, but not too bad-you still get a good feel for the show. Recorded at the second night performance. Some generational loss. B

“Are you ready honey?”
You heard your husband calling you from downstairs. You looked at yourself in the mirror one last time, checking your hair and your makeup. Well, there was not much more you could do. You had tried to hide the tiredness but you were afraid it was still showing. You grabbed your little clutch on the bed and joined Gwilym who was waiting for you. He was so handsome in his suit, you could not believe that was the man you had married one year ago after three years of perfect love.
“What a lucky girl I am” you said, pecking his lips.
“You look amazing darling. Should we go?”
“Absolutely”
You were both going the London premiere of the new film your friend Ben was starring in. He had kindly invited you and you were really excited to go. He was part of the family now. You were really happy that he was part of the great cast Gwilym had worked with. He was there at your wedding and often came to the house for dinner. Of course you would be here to support him in this new project.
It was a lovely night and the temperature was perfect for you not to have a wear a coat with your dress. The cab was waiting for you in front of the house, the journey was going to take some time, especially with the evening traffic but you did not mind as long as you were with your man. He had come home from rehearsal just in time to start getting ready and you were happy to have a little bit of time to talk. He was really into this next play, Richard II but at least you were glad he did not have to go away to shoot a film.
“How was your day love?” you enquired
“It was good. We’ve started working on the last act so it’s pretty exciting”
“Can’t wait to see that. You know it’s one of my favourite play”
“I know and it’s stressing me out”
“Please, you’re going to be amazing. And you know I’m never wrong”
You were so proud of him and could barely believe how talented he was. He was so smart in his choices too, he was always so careful about his roles and you were really happy to see him going back on stage. You loved cinema of course but you loved live performances even more.
“Tell me about your day” he said
“Well… business as usual. We had a little party and that’s it”
“A party. What for?”
“Alice, one of my colleagues. She’s pregnant with her third kid so she’s leaving us to become a full time mom. She’s been here for quite a while so we decided to do a little something.”
You tried to say it as naturally as you could but it was hard, extremely hard. The cake, the kisses and congratulations had been a real torture for you. The reason was simple, you were not able to get pregnant even though you had been trying for more than a year now. You had stopped taking the pill a few months before your wedding, knowing that it could take a little bit of time and you did not want to waste time. But months had gone by and nothing. You wanted this kid so much. When you were younger you always said that you were not sure about having children, that it would depend on your future life, your partner and your position. Now you had almost everything and the only little thing that was missing from your life was destroying it.
“Was it okay for you?” Gwilym asked
He grabbed your hand inside his. He knew you were suffering from the situation. He had gone with you to all the doctor’s appointments, listened to your complaints and comforted you when you cried. He wanted to make a family as much as you did and he was being so patient. All the results had came back clear, there was no reason you could not conceive and that was the thing that made you the angriest. Age was a factor of course and there was nothing you could do about it.
“It was okay.”
You tried to smile at him. You had decided to stop feeling sorry for yourself. You would find a solution. You knew time was running, especially as Gwil was getting older and he wanted to enjoy being with his kids as much as he could. You have talked about adoption but it was still to soon for you to think about it, to give up on your dream of giving birth. You had agreed on making a pause, stop trying to control it too closely, because maybe you were thinking too much.
“Love, you can tell me about it”
“Don’t worry. I’m not going to become mad everytime I see a pregnant woman you know. It’s a wonderful thing for Alice”
“I know. But it’s alright if you’re upset”
He knew you so well. You rested your face on his shoulder, taking a deep breath. If fact you had cried today. It was just too much, all the smiles, the touching the belly, talking about pregnancy, you had gone to the bathroom to let it go and came back with a fake smile on your face. You had tried to keep things a little more for yourself lately. Gwilym was extremely supportive and this was a battle you two were fighting but you did not want to put too much weight on his back. This new play was extremely important for him and you were tired to see life turning around your dream of becoming parents.
You had so much to be happy for. You had a work that you loved and you were hoping for a promotion in the near future. You had the best friends in the world, even if some were miles away they were always here for you no matter what, especially for the crazy moments to share. And you were going to spend the rest of your life with the most perfect human being on earth. It was enough you thought, it should be enough.
You were worried most of the time and it made you think that the stress was what kept you away from getting pregnant. You had nausea and terrible headaches just as you used to have during exam periods at university and that was not a sweet memory. You were going to see your GP tomorrow to see if there was anything to do about it. You had been able to hide from Gwil because you knew it would worry him and that was completely useless.
Gwilym saw that you did not want to talk about it anymore and changed the subject. You talked about next Christmas even though you still had a few months and how you would split your time between both of your families. It was one of you favourite time of the year because you were not able to see everybody that often anymore but it also meant buying presents and you knew that was going to be your job to do so. Gwilym hated to do Christmas shopping and was often clueless about what to buy. A few months ago you were dreaming about spending that time with a round belly and tell the news as a Christmas present this year, but you were going to have to pick socks and scarves as usual.
The car was pulling off and you could hear the screams of the fans in front of the theatre in Leicester square. You were not a big fan of these kind of events but it was for Ben and not much was asked from you. You would simply smile next to your husband until you got inside to enjoy the movie and congratulate your friend. The door opened and you took a deep breath, putting a smile on your face. You waited until Gwilym was next to you and put your arm around his, that made you feel more confident. You joined the line and waited until it was your time to go on the red carpet. Gwilym turned to you and looked at your whole look, by his gaze you could tell it wasn’t as bad as you thought.
“Honey”
“Yes?”
“This dress, it perfectly highlights your boobs”
Before you could say anything back you were asked to move on. That little shit, it was so him! He looked so innocent on the outside but he was the master of these kind of moves because he knew you would make him pay for it later on. But right now you were not turned on, you were just highly uncomfortable. You tried to look your best for the photos and smiled as some fans were really excited to see Gwilym. You knew some of them were probably here because of Ben and their friendship was something they loved. He took a few pictures with some of them with you waiting patiently but you did not mind at all. You loved to see him so happy.
Still, you felt a lot better once inside. You were again surrounded by people you didn't know but the pressure was minor compared to outside. You knew Gwil would probably have to say hi to a lot of people and it was the perfect time for you to go to the ladies. You kissed his cheek, telling him you would not take long and went.
You found the bathrooms quite easily and you were surprised to see they were empty. You looked at your reflection in the mirror and focused on you breast, mentally cursing Gwilym for his little comment earlier. He was not wrong though. Your boobs looked bigger in it than they had when you had bought the dress a few weeks ago. You touched them and felt they were sore even though they were not especially compressed. You frowned and went in one the cubicles to do what you had to, not an easy business with that dress.
You heard someone getting inside the toilets and some noises. As you went outside you found a woman desperately trying to find something in her purse.
“I’m so sorry” she said to you “but would you have a tampon or sanitary towel”
You looked inside your clutch and handed a little tampon. You always made sure to have one on you, since you had stopped taking the pill your periods were highly irregular and you felt like a teenager all over again so you always came prepared.
“Thank you so much! You’re a life saver!”
You washed your hands and went back to your husband. The whole film you felt like something was wrong. You could not put your finger on it and that drove you mad. You were not even paying that much attention to the screen and you were not proud of it. You fingers were intertwined with Gwil’s and you tried to let the feeling soothe you.
You hated that kind of feeling, something was right under your nose but you did not know what so you felt like your brain was about to explode. The film ended and you applauded fondly even though you had no idea how good it actually was.
You had to wait before being able to see Ben, of course everyone wanted a word with him. You were extremely happy for him and chatted patiently before it was your turn. As soon as he saw you he hugged you both before kissing you on the cheek.
“How’s my favourite couple !? I’m so happy you could come !” He said
“We’re great thanks Ben. Thanks for inviting us” you answered, preferring not to say anything about the film
You talked for a bit, about life and things. You did not see him as often now, he was mostly filming abroad which was really good for him. Soon he had to go and talk to other people. Gwilym and you decided that it was time for both of you to go. You were still a little upset without knowing exactly why. Once again you had to go to the toilet, your bladder was really weak today and that irritated you even more.
“I’ll arrange for a taxi, just meet me outside alright?” Gwilym said
You hurried, and remembered the girl who had asked for your tampon and then it hit you. How your boobs were sore, your headaches and dizziness, you wanted to throw up regularly and most importantly, this tampon which had been going from purse to purse for weeks now. Because you wanted to not become too control freak you had decided to stop watching your cycles too closely but it became clear, even if it was messed up, it should have arrived by now.
You started to panic. Your head was going in a million directions at the same time. Could it be possible ? Could you be pregnant? You did not want to make any assumptions based on so little. The symptoms could just be periods coming a little late or even being a bit different. You felt dizzy and put some water on your face. You were breathing heavily. Now really was not the time for a panic attack. You tried to compose yourself. You were tired, you had had a really long day and were completely stressed out, you were probably just imagining things. You felt your phone buzzing and answered it. Of course Gwilym was starting to worry, you followed his instructions and joined him outside, hanging up as soon as you saw him.
“Honey, what’s going on? You’re so pale! Are you okay?”
You could see the worry on his face and that killed you. But you could not tell him because it would make your suspicion plausible and there would be hope and you were not ready to be crushed once again.
“I just feel tired, it’s okay. If we can just stop on the way if there’s a Boots open, I need to buy some stuff…”
You did not give any details and you knew he would not ask for them. You both went inside the taxi and he gave your address before asking him to stop if any drugstore was open on the way. You smiled at him before kissing his jaw. You were so lucky it was almost unbelievable. You talked a bit about the film and tried to avoid going into details but you did pretty fine. The car suddenly stopped and you saw the shop right next to you.
“Do you want me to go?” Gwilym asked “Just tell me what you need, I don’t mind”
You knew he did not but you said you were fine and went on your own. Gwilym was not the type of man afraid to buy a box of tampon for his girlfriend and you liked that, but this was not exactly what you needed to buy right now. You tried to make it quick as possible not to look suspicious although it was ridiculous, it was your husband in that taxi and you had nothing to hide from him. You bought the usual pregnancy test (you had gone through a few of them during the past few months) and a box of tampon. At least if the first thing proved to be inconclusive the second one would come in handy. You paid for your items, took the paper bag and got back to the car thanking them for waiting.
The rest of the travel back home was quicker than the outward journey. You were both so tired that it was completely silent. Gwil’s thumb softly caressing your hand. Once home you were welcomed by your little dog jumping all over the both of you. You had adopted Dusty one year after moving in together and you loved him so much.
“Someone is excited to see us” you said, petting his head
“You want to go for a walk buddy?” Gwilym said, joining you in the petting “That’s what I thought. I’ll be back in fifteen minutes alright?”
You thanked him and kissed him before going upstairs, the paper bag still in your hand. You were glad you hadn’t gone to the toilet earlier in the cinema after your little epiphany. You took off your dress quickly in your bedroom before going to the bathroom. You took a deep breath, you had done it so many times. During the first few months of you trying to get pregnant it was almost compulsive but every time became harder and harder. You peed on the little stick and tried to occupy your mind while you had to wait. Removing all the jewelry and the make up while always checking time on your phone. And then, suddenly, you didn’t want to know anymore, you were too afraid so you decided to take a shower to cool down.
You were almost finished when you heard a knock on the door. Gwilym was back and you suddenly started to panic again. Before you could tell him to wait he was already inside, going to the sink to brush his teeth, his eyes suddenly looking down on the stick.
“Honey, I thought we said we would …”
You knew what was he was going to say, you were putting too much pressure on yourself and you had agreed not to think about it for a while. But he did not finish his sentence so you ripped the shower curtain open, looking at him. He had the pregnancy test in his hands and you could see his eyes watering. Your heart almost stopped.
“Gwil… I’m sorry… I know it’s stupid but I thought that maybe… I didn’t want to make you sad…”
You felt awful, you did not want him to feel the disappointment, to see you fail once again. You wrapped yourself in a towel, and he eventually looked a you but his eyes were not full of sadness, it was something else and before you knew it his arms were around you.
“It’s positive Y/N. IT’S BLOODY POSITIVE”
You snatched the test from his hands and as soon as you saw what was written on it you feel down on your knees, tears coming out of your eyes. You could not believe it, what was written right in front of you, you were pregnant. Gwilym’s arms wrapped you once again and for a few minutes both of you were just a crying mess, overwhelmed by joy on the bathroom floor. You finally looked at him, the perfect man who was going to be your partner in the greatest adventure in your life.
“I love you so much” you said
“Honey… You have no idea how much I love you too. My beautiful wife. The beautiful mother of our child”
You bit your lips, unable to hide your happiness. He took your hand and helped you get back up, kissing you before pressing his forehead against yours. The moment was so magical, so pure. You went to bed peacefully that night. You would have much to worry later on but the feeling of failure that had been haunting you for the past months had left and in Gwilym’s arms you fell asleep ready for the next day more than ever.

My Day in London: A Review
I just thought I’d share a few points of my day down in London earlier this week.
1. Missed my fucking train. I’d forgotten that there were some major road works going on and didn’t allow enough time to get to the station. The taxi driver very helpfully spent the last ten minutes of the journey telling me that I should have allowed more time until I wanted to knock his block off. However, he made up for it earlier by telling me a story about how he knew all about the history of my home town, Kidderminster, and how in the second World War the British Sikh regiment captured all of the Italian military (no they didn’t), brought them back to England as POWs (no they didn’t) and didn’t have enough prison camps so they closed down all of Kiddermister’s carpet factories (nope) and made people live there and that’s why Kidderminster doesn’t have any carpet factories any more (it has several) and why most of the townsfolk have Italian names (seriously? It’s full of chavs!).
2. Got another train and ended up sitting next to a man who was talking in his sleep in, I think, Korean. I wish I’d known what he was saying, because his two travelling companions sitting across the aisle from us seemed really embarrassed for him.
3. Went to the V&A museum. The guard on the way in to the tunnel entrance gave me the glad eye and told me I didn’t have to have my bag searched because I was too pretty to be a terrorist. This made me feel neither complimented nor particularly safe, but at least I got to take my bottle of Oasis into the museum unhindered. Mmm, delicious Oasis. Even tastier when it’s contraband.
4. I searched for but failed to find @atlinmerrick‘s favourite statue that looks like Martin Freeman in the nip with a peach bum. I did however see some wonderful statues, some nicely gothic ironworks, a lot of beautiful kimonos, and some truly fuck ugly high fashion clothes in the Balenciaga exhibit.
5. Took the tube to Camden and managed to find exactly the same pub that my friend @bagelofdeath and I went to for lunch last time we met up. They do really good pizzas and cider, and have a little upstairs room overlooking a busy junction. So I sat at a table right in the window, looking out at the rain and the traffic, listening to indie rock music and cramming my face with carbs and rocket. Which is a very London thing to do.
6. Wandered up to the lock market for a bit of Christmas present shopping and did my best to avoid the storekeepers trying to ingratiate me. Saw many stalls selling the exact same products, the stall keepers of which all hurried to assure me were handmade by themselves that very morning. You wove all these printed scarves by hand in a morning? Why are you not in the Avengers?
7. There were way more shops selling bongs, marajuana sweets, and similar stuff than last time I was there. Sign of the times, man.
8. As I walked past one shop front the guy at the counter cat called me, which I hate, but he yelled “Hey darlin, where you from?” and when I ignored him he bitterly added “Oh yeah, that’s a really pretty name”, like he couldn’t remember what he’d even asked me, and it was funny enough that I didn’t really care.
9. He did exactly the same thing when I went back down the road an hour later. What a bell end.
10. So. Back on the tube and up to Leicester Square. I had a wander around the Lego store without buying anything, as you do (honestly, it’s more of a museum than anything else), and then popped into the M&M store which smells fucking awful. How do you manage to have a shop full of chocolate products and make it smell like the back of a printer? And who loves M&Ms that much that they want their whole wardrobe to feature them? They’re just Smarties’ inbred cousins! They were having a German Christmas market there too, but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as ours. Fuck yeah Birmingham!
11. Found a tiny second hand bookshop staffed by a woman who was the most perfect fit of a librarian stereotype I have ever seen and it’s genuinely tragic that she doesn’t work in a library. Tiny build, twinset and bead necklace, decorative chain on her wing glasses, nervous demeanor and a itsy bitsy high pitched voice. She was so cute. I bought a book just so she’d talk to me a bit more (and the book turned out to be quite good) and managed to put the Evangelist who had been badgering her into enough of a snit by interrupting him that he left.
12. It was 7pm by now, and time for the actual reason I’d gone down to London in the first place, the stage musical of Young Frankenstein at the Garrick Theatre! It was fantastic. Ross Noble, one of my favourite stand up comedians, was playing Igor and he was great, really enjoying the hell out of his costume and his occasional use of a French Horn. The songs were hilarious and, though they didn’t include my favourite moment of the Affectionate Elbow Nudge, the song that replaced it, ‘Don’t Touch Me’ (Tits! Tits! Tits!) was a real highlight. As was the extended performance of ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’, and Lesley Joseph’s (72 and still a fox) Frau Blucher who was getting really annoyed with those damn horses. I loved it! If you can get to London before the end of February, give it a go.
13. Back on the train to come home, and spent much of the journey listening to the conversation of a young couple at the table seats opposite who were really not at all on the same wavelength. He would tell her about how often his brother threw up on trains and she would reply that yeah, the special effects on the music video she was watching on her phone would make anyone hurl, and he replied that he didn’t like Spotify either and it made everything look weird, and it was like that game where you’ve got to come up with names that start with the last letter of the name that came before it, except with entire concepts. Also, I played quite a lot of Kitty Powers’ Matchmaker, which was good fun, highly recommended.
14. Birmingham New Street Station is really, really creepy when you arrive there at 12.30 am and nobody is around and you can fool yourself into thinking that you’ll never find the exit and you’ll be wondering around in a tasteful but poorly signposted interior for the rest of your life like a brushed chrome pergatory until you’re suddenly outside and almost falling into a flowerbed and you don’t know what happened.
15. You know that thing where you and a stranger going in opposite directions nearly walk into each other, and you stop, and you move to your right and they move to their left, and you’re still in the same place, so you apologise and both move the other way, and oh no, ha ha, what a to-do, until one of you makes a break for it? While walking home through a pedestrian underpass I got trapped in that idiot dance for a good thirty seconds with the biggest fucking rat I have ever seen. She was the one that made a break for it, and I was honestly surprised not to see a small cowboy riding on her back as the ran past me.
And then I got home and went to bed, the end :)

I looked at Slavery, child abuse, addiction as well as people who had a significant effect on the fashion industry, mental health is another topic that is always looked over and maybe a bit Hush Hush both within and outside of the industry, I looked at cases listed above and if there has been a deep dive through any other podcasts, to which I can honestly say none of the cases that I am considering, have not been looked at previously. There are many booked, articles, documentaries, which I am hoping to use to produce a podcast that takes a deep dive into them.

My plan was to go to the cinema all day but the Leicester Square Odeon where they do all the red carpet showings is closed, and the Leicester Square Cineworld is also closed??? So I had to travel quite far to find another one and saw a movie there, then walked past a guitar shop...and ended up buying another acoustic 😅 oops

Leicester Square, October 5th (by request)
Overview: Tucked up next to Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, bordered by the rear of the National Portrait Gallery on one side and the bookshop-filled Charing Cross Road on another, lies the peculiarly-pronounced Leicester Square.
It is primarily known as London’s film centre, hosting numerous red-carpet film debuts. Most of the surrounding shops are designed to cater to an elite crowd, with plenty of up-scale restaurants, casinos, and clubs.
Paradoxically, it is also a hive of youth activity, with hordes of music devotees crowding the streets for the chance to listen to someone performing a Michael Jackson cover.
Experience: I was there in the late afternoon on a Thursday, but it was clear that my visit coincided with several other events: the aforementioned music concert (which was only beginning to get set up) and a film debut of some sort, likely associated with the London Film Festival, which had advertising plastered everywhere. All this traffic also attracted several street performers, both of the musical and magical persuasions.
The first thing you notice upon entering the square—apart from the red carpet, hordes of people, and distracting restaurant fronts—is the fountains. Circling the slouching Shakespeare’s plinth is a ring of fountains in the form of jets of water spouting up out of the pavement. They are synchronized, either shooting up all at once, working their way around in a circle, or operating in some nebulous pattern. There’s enough space around the statue and fountains to walk without fear of getting wet—unless you’re one of the boys purposefully trying to step on the jets of water—but the sound of the water slapping into the pavement makes them impossible to miss.
The square is much busier than any of the nearby streets, but it is navigable as long as you avoid the main masses of people. It is a bustle of activity, with music from the concert, the sounds of the street performers, the continuous faint roar of many people speaking to each other, the patter of the fountain, and a hundred other small noises all pushed together to form an unorchestrated symphony of humanity.

1932 Rockne Model 65 Balances Style and Performance
For a dedicated hot rodder, unique opportunities exist around every corner. You never really know when that moment in time may come, but it’s always looming on the horizon. Regardless if it’s stumbling upon that one hard-to-find part to complete a project or uncovering something truly mystical that you never anticipated, fate plays a heavy hand in the union. For Ron Perkins of Paxton, Massachusetts, the visit to a cobweb-filled barn in rural Vermont to check out a 1932 Plymouth for his son opened up a portal into the past, uncovering a dormant pile of steel that had been asleep for decades.
While reviewing the Plymouth, Ron’s eye caught a form lurking in the shadows in a distant corner of the barn. Curiosity waved its wand, and further inspection proved that it was an old coupe, picked clean and left for dead. The body, however, possessed very unique stampings, ones that he had never before seen, adding to the allure. Even though the shell and frame were void of any identifying badges, there was no way it was going to remain in suspended animation. Without wasting a moment, a deal was made, and the mystery coupe was hauled back to the home garage for evaluation.
When you step off the beaten path onto one less traveled, you encounter the true quest to uncover just what you’ve found. In Ron’s case it meant plenty of late nights on the keyboard trying to reveal the lineage of the early ’30s-style body lying dormant in the shop. After extensive research and phone calls, it was determined that he had unearthed a 1932 Rockne Model 65 coupe with matching frame. In confirming the car’s rarity, he discovered that the Rockne had a very short production run, spanning from 1932 to 1933, and that it was built in conjunction with Studebaker.
The comparison of Rockne production numbers seems remarkably minute when reviewing them to those of Ford for the same year. Rockne’s total production of 23,709 units was easily overshadowed by Ford’s total production, 341,988 units, making the fact that the coupe survived even more remarkable. There was a lot to be done before the build could even get started, since it meant starting the search for many of the missing parts. The five-year mission led Ron to creating countless contacts in the very small web of enthusiasts who covet the Rockne. He even sourced parts from such unlikely places like garage sales and random web-based ads.
As a young rodder, Ron grew up listening to stories from his dad and uncle, Billy O’Neil, racing at the Orange Drags while also spending late nights on Mill Street in Worcester running hard under the lights. In designing the car in his mind, he wanted to create a fusion of style and performance with elements embodying the best bits from the Rockne and Studebaker lines to create a classic ’50s-style hop-up. To get started, the original frame was stripped, boxed, and treated to custom crossmembers for added strength. Out back a vintage Halibrand Culver City quick-change rear was packed with 3.90:1 gears and suspended in place by custom Rockne-style parallel leaf springs and Pete & Jakes tube shocks. To set the stance up front, a 4-inch dropped Super Bell axle with matching spindles was matched to a Posies leaf spring and Pete & Jakes tube shocks. When it’s time to drop anchor, a Pete & Jakes dual master pushes fluid through stainless lines to 1940 Ford juice brakes at each corner wearing 45-fin Buick aluminum drums. Linking it all to the street are a set of classic 16-inch Artillery wheels with knock-off Cragar-style caps and trim rings wearing 8.90×16 rear and 5.00×16 front rubber from Firestone/Coker.
When it came time to selecting power for the coupe, Ron wanted to embrace the Studebaker’s performance history. Again, it was a time when perseverance paid off in locating a number of rare NOS parts to build a race-bred R3 Studebaker V-8. He contacted Bob Munter of WCD Garage in Northborough to begin assembly. He massaged a 1963 Studebaker R2 289ci block to R3 specs at 304.5 ci and filled it with an NOS R3 rotating assembly including a forged steel crank linked to matching rods wearing forged aluminum pistons getting a bump from a Studebaker cam. A set of reworked factory high-performance heads make seamless power especially when matched to the knockout punch of a factory aluminum intake with a 625-cfm carb and Paxton SN92 supercharger. It sparks to life thanks to a Mallory ignition while dumping spent gases through factory-tuned port exhaust manifolds to a 1 ½ -inch exhaust with NOS polished stainless Hollywood mufflers. To move the goods a Tremec TKO-500 five-speed trans links to a custom driveshaft from Mitchell Differential to lay down the power. It’s all good for solid 400 hp at 6,000 rpm.
Thankfully the coupe was kept dry and out of the elements for decades, resulting in a body that needed very little rust repair. Locating all of the missing parts, however, was another story, taking years to source. Once everything was found, the body was stripped and delivered to Jim Morancy of Spencer to work his magic. Before long the vintage steel was brought back to perfection and metal finished with all the gaps set. Ron decided on a very subtle Axalta Grey to bring the project to life. More cool elements include 1932 Studebaker Dictator headlights, custom rear bumper, and 1937 Studebaker wigwag taillights.
Inside, there’s plenty of traditional vibe, starting with a factory dash packed with vintage Stewart-Warner curved-glass gauges to monitor the vitals. A 1937 Studebaker banjo-style wheel mounted to a factory column steers the course, while shifts fly through a custom stick, and a kit from EZ Wiring makes it all complete. For comfort, Ron sourced a pair of 1957 Triumph TR3 bucket seats and contacted Seamless Custom of Leicester to wrap them in a classic combination of black and gray leather with matching side panels accented by charcoal square-weave carpeting. This is a truly unique hot rod that fuses a rarely seen Rockne with Studebaker R3 performance making it a standout, and we totally dig it.

Away from the kids - at Claridges
Is something – or someone – making you feel tired, stressed out and miserable? Then leave them at home and get away from it all
Our eldest sprog is quickly approaching her seventh year, yet Duncan and I couldn’t remember even one night that we had spent together away from the kids (having Number Two and Three overnight in hospital didn’t count).
So we were delighted to accept an invitation to spend a night at Claridge’s – arguably London’s grandest hotel – and be able to get away from it all (and them).
There are two things I can’t stand about fancy hotels (apart from the largely inflated prices). I hate overly-obsequious staff who hover over you, anticipating your every whim to the extent that often your plate is whisked away before you’ve even put down your knife. I also despise hotels that look identical, as if the same overly zealous property developer had gone mad after purchasing a job lot of identical granite worktops, marble tiles and beige paint.
So you can imagine how relieved – and happy – I was to find Claridge’s didn’t fit into any of the above. The suite we were given was elegant and individual, and although it had obviously been modernised fairly recently it had kept its old-school charm and was a bit frayed around the edges.
The corridors were largely empty, with plain carpeting that didn’t appear – or smell – as if it came straight from an Alan Partridge Travelodge. Best of all, the staff were polite yet reserved, showing us around, making sure we were comfortable, then getting our of our way.
After retiring to our room and dining on fresh fruit and mineral water, I placed my tiny backpack in the cavernous dressing room before using the sumptuous bathroom suite (we also had a cloakroom for guests we sadly forgot to invite).
After dining in town we retired back to our suite and spent the rest of the night in deep repose, confident that no children would wake us up wanting milk, to be taken to the loo, or to have their vomit/poo/wee wee cleaned up.
Of course our lie-in was not to be, as I am now trained to wake up at precisely 6:59, come hell or high water. But Duncan did a lazy crossword while I had a long soak in the tub before we ambled into The Foyer for a simple breakfast of ham omelettes and toast, washed down by exceptionally good coffee. Again, the service was excellent, unobtrusive yet helpful.
Sadly, our budget would not stretch to a frequent weekend at Claridge’s. But if it did, you can bet I’d be there in a New York second. And once I got used to having a bit of time to myself, I might even consider taking the kids with me. Then again, maybe not.
About our stay: Dating back to 1812, this beautiful hotel has always attracted both British and foreign aristocracy, from the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia to H.M. The Queen. But even mere mortals are allowed on its precious soil, as witnessed by our recent appearance – sans enfants.
On-site activities: Lounging in our enormous suite was great fun – until we got itchy feet and decided to venture further afield. But to be honest, we could have spent all day trying on our fluffy slippers and matching bathrobes, reading our complimentary newspapers and dining on the complimentary fresh fruit and mineral water whilst watching telly and then ordering room service.
Claridge’s offers several eateries. The Art Deco Reading Room serves lunch and dinner, as does the Art Deco The Foyer, on the ground floor. If you prefer more European cuisine, try Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s a la carte menu at £60 per person. We opted for a cheaper option and saw a film at Leicester Square before eating at nearby Yo Sushi, which came to £20 a head, including drinks. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to sample either of the hotel’s two fine bars: Claridge’s Bar or The Macanudo Fumoir, a smoking room that features 20 Cuban cigars and the largest selection of Macanudo cigars in Britain. Known as a great place for a seductive nightcap.
The Hotel’s Olympus Beauty and Fitness Suite has views across London – and the gym is available free to all hotel guests. A wide range of exercise equipment is at your use, and therapy rooms offer massage, facials and specialised body treatments, as well as a wide range of beauty treatments. Personal trainers are also available on demand. Sadly, there is no swimming pool.
Local activities: With the fine shopping of Bond Street on your doorstep and more affordable Oxford Street just a hop, skip and a jump away, there is no shortage of things to do. If you’re coming from far away, making an itinerary and booking things beforehand won’t be a waste of time.
Wish we had known: That we’d be allocated a two-room suite. We would have invited friends over to boast, then after giving them a quick drink made them all go home.
Our top tip: Tell your babysitter not to call you unless it’s urgent, and don’t tell anyone else where you are – unless you want to ring your friends and gloat, as Duncan happily did (I gloated after the fact, when people asked me where I had been over the weekend).
Kids say: ‘It’s not fair! I want to come!’ said Josie, six. ‘Why are you going without us? Who’s going to look after us?’ chimed in Tilly, four. ‘Bye-bye, Mummy,’ said two-year-old Clementine. Happily, they weren’t invited!
Getting there: Claridge’s is on the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in central London. Most people take a cab there – we took the Tube and embarked at Bond Street, then walked. Rooms start at £300 and go up to £5,000 per night for the two penthouses, but families can have two Superior King rooms, either adjacent or interconnecting, staring at £375 per night for two adults and two children. Kids will get a complimentary age-appropriate gift and children’s amenities are available on request.
