trying to find a way to explain how Weird my music taste was throughout my entire childhood/teen years only to realize it's Weird in Norway Specifically, but actually perfectly normal and acceptable in the czech republic. it turns out i am Like This because i've been listening to folk music + blackmore's night every time my mom drove me anywhere, and because some family friends gave me copies of The Best Of Enya and Mike Oldfield's Millenium Bell at a formative age that i promptly absorbed into my soul. i'll be like "huh nobody in norway seems to have any clue who mike oldfield is????" and then i'll hear moonlight shadow play on the radio at the hair salon in brno and i'll be like OHHHH OKAY I SEE. i am not at all in touch with contemporary czech culture and i have no idea if my mom's friend circle were the cool kids or not but i guess that's the music culture i inherited!!!!

I really don’t have a list of favorite fics; however, I managed to bookmark more than 100 during my time on ao3, and they are ALL kinds of fics: show fics, book fics, perhaps even movie fics, RPFs, and crossovers.

As you seem to be mostly interested in show fics, I must say that the more time passed since the first season ended, the fewer fics based on the show were available. Authors developed their fics with more courage. And good! You wouldn’t have any Louis/Armand fic if you only followed the show canon… Or Armand/Daniel. Or any other pairing. Authors are so amazingly creative, and although I was skeptical in the beginning, too, I find human AU fics as interesting and compelling as these that stick only to show/vampire ones.

However, you asked for a list of preferably show fics. So here are some I can recommend with all my heart. There is no order here. I will also not tell you why I liked them because… they’re just so delicious! These authors did an incredible job. I know that they repeat, but what can I do? They’re great!

Turns out we should have started eating the rich centuries ago.  Otakar Vávra’s potent Communist show trial allegory takes historical horror and brands it with political intent.  It’s ironic that between this and The Crucible, the same basic template can be used to satirize both the Red Scare and the Reds themselves, just speaking to how fundamentalist ideologies are all different ways for the elite to oppress the masses.  This takes a much more brutal approach than the Miller play, applying torture to women and watching utterly brutalized bodies submitted to endless indignities.  It needs little more poetic shorthand than an ever-growing forest of stakes to signify the naked greed, corruption, and misogyny disguised as a pious Make Moravia Great Again.  

Witchhammer diverges from folk horror insofar as there is no fantasy.  Witches aren’t real, Satan doesn’t exist, and nobody’s sticking candles up one another’s asses.  At least on Walpurgisnacht.  And without my participation.  This is all real.  The film has the Czech mentality to deliver the most brutal end text bloc in film history, assuring the frustrated and infuriated viewer that, yes, Jindřich František Boblig of Edelstadt lived to a ripe old age and had a fulfilling life.  Instead, this horror embeds itself within the mentality of the then-contemporaneous populace.  Boblig makes it clear his intent to rob blind this community he’s been invited into, singling out the stupid and/or the wealthy in a great purge with the aid of his perhaps lover, the slimy Ignác and the board he keeps under his thumb.  He certainly doesn’t believe in witches, but knows how to use the vocabulary to achieve his desired results.  Others, however, are not so aware.  To them, the confessions of fornication with Lucifer aren’t so much convenient shorthand for eliminating dissent as literal truth, fear rippling throughout the base and the willfully ignorant elite, quaffing wine as innocents burn.

Louis followed, dazed, as Lestat led him over to their mirror. Lestat turned him gently, guiding Louis to stand before the mirror, Lestat pressed to his back and peering over his shoulder with wanting eyes. Louis’ face felt hot as he willed himself to look at his reflection. The long, slender planes of his dark chest and arms contrasted against Lestat’s pale form looming behind him. Lestat was watching him closely, making Louis’ skin crawl, but he forced himself to keep looking. Following the dark trail of tight curls down from his navel, his eyes drifted to the dark silk of the garter belt. The elastic bit into the slight softness just below Louis’ waist. Lestat’s hands trailed up and down Louis’ sides, making him shiver, before coming to rest over the belt, fingers squeezing gently at the soft flesh. Louis’ heart was still fluttering in his chest; he felt unreasonably anxious. The two stood there for several minutes, Lestat drinking Louis in and petting at Louis’ waist and hips. Lestat’s fingers traced circled over Louis’ hipbones, and Louis’ breathing steadied. “Do you see?” Lestat finally breathed, fingertips digging into the points of Louis’ hips.
