Dutch photographers Carmen Freudenthal and Elle Verhagen began their collaboration in 1989. Their approach is based on fashion photography combined with strong visual concepts. A collaboration between designer and art director Karen Heuter and Freudenthal/Verhagen, this book includes material spanning the duo’s entire body of work. It is a journey into a surreal, colourful, and unorthodox universe, which is presented in an alternative way.
WHOLE contains a selection of 150 works by Freudenthal/Verhagen, decontextualised from their original series and chronology and rearranged by color. The book’s unique edit brings new life to each and every work, be it from their fashion editorials for magazines such as i-D, Dazed & Confused, Flash Art, NRC De LUXE and Harpers Bazaar, their long time collaboration with fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm, or commissioned campaigns, portraits and museum works.

Amsterdam–based photography duo Freudenthal/Verhagen have spent over two decades perfecting their singular, jaw-dropping approach to photography. Carmen Freudenthal & Elle Verhagen (1965 & 1962) met right after graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy where Carmen studied photography and Elle studied fashion design. There was an immediate recognition of a mutual taste in image making and what fashion imagery should look like, which formed the basis of their fruitful practice. Carmen & Elle’s ongoing collaboration began in 1989, in the very first issue of I-D magazine. Since then, the duo relentlessly continues to search for ways to expand the definition of fashion photography, crossing lines between fashion and art, in their pursuit for cultural relevancy.
