In 1990s Oregon, Mike (who is based on Ned Poins) is a street kid and sex worker who is searching for his mother. His best friend, Scotty, (based on Prince Hal) is also a street kid and sex worker, but is also the son of the mayor, and knows he can go back to the comfortable wealth of his father whenever he wants, but choses to spend his time with the other street kids. The kid's "leader" is Bob (Falstaff). The two of them leave on a journey to find Mike's mother, taking them from Oregon, to Idaho, to Italy. While in Italy, Scotty falls in love with a girl called Carmella, and leaves Mike and the other street kids behind, taking on his father's wealth, getting married to Carmella, and becoming a prominent figure in society.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is an absurdist, existential tragicomedy following two minor characters in Hamlet, the courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The action takes place mainly "in the wings" of Shakespeare's Hamlet, with brief appearances of major characters who enact fragments of the original's scenes. Between these episodes, the two protagonists voice their confusion at the progress of events occurring onstage without them in Hamlet, of which they have no direct knowledge. They also have little knowledge of their own lives, and a creeping fear that they're doomed.

do YOU like 4th wall breaks do YOU like metacommentary on the inherent horror of living in a story that cannot be taken off its rails no matter what you do. this is basically the mother of every other piece of metafiction work. even if youve never seen this play if you create or think about metafiction youve almost certainly consumed something that has its roots in this play. a vote for ragad is a vote for the history & legacy of metafiction!

So last night I had a weird dream involving a road trip to my old job - a Shakespeare theater in semi-rural New England - with The New Day. I’m not sure if they were performing or just got let loose in costume stock LIKE YOU DO when you’re driving around with people who are this extra...

But when I told D this, he pointed out that Big E would make the perfect Falstaff - the sheer number of belly jokes, the incredibly smart nonsequiturs that just spill out of both of them, and the fact that Falstaff grinding and twerking at someone he doesn’t like is absolutely not unreasonable. So I’m seeing a condensed Henry IV that involves Kofi and Xavier as Prince Hal and Hotspur realizing they’re both named Henry and both want to be king and turns into a all-over-the-theater comical chase scene fight with trombones and “Let’s Go Henry” “Henry Sucks” chants.

Conversation gets better from there. We determined the world also needs Much Ado About Cruiserweights, in which TJP wants to date Bayley, and everyone jumps through hoops trying to prank The Brian Kendrick and Alexa Bliss into falling for each other (even though they already have), and Neville is the antagonist.

We came to the conclusion that AJ Styles needs to be Marc Antony LONG ago (“I come to bury Cena, not to praise him!” was the exact phrase), but would pretty much cast him in either a history play or as comic relief because neither of us are convinced there’s a good partner for him as a romantic lead.

Charlotte is basically the ideal Lady Macbeth.

Speculating the hilarity that would ensue from Cass & Carmella’s Romeo & Juliet, with Enzo as Mercutio. (Balcony scene is a forgone conclusion because he’s as tall as the damn balcony)

 The logical conclusion of this is, of course, The Complete Works of Shieldspeare, Abridged, in which Seth, Dean, and Roman take on the entire canon. The History Plays football scene would be amazing, and end with “Shane O’Mac, VK the Turd, the whole MacMahon family is fucking absurd!” Sassy Roman doing the Titus Andronicus cooking show bit and stepping in as Othello (because it’s so damn wrong it’s right). The sped-up and backwards Hamlet at the end would involve folding chairs and whoever plays Claudius and Gertrude OBVIOUSLY dressed up as Trips and Steph. And y’all can fight over who plays Romeo and Juliet and I’ll just make popcorn and watch...

Just since we’re in a potential announcement times, and memories can apparently be pretty poor, it seemed like a good time to bring this back. So, yes, 3.5 years ago our faves were very much the “type of couple” to issue a statement when they had a child. (In the form of an actual quote from a “spokesperson”, presumably Karon.) Then with #2 they either didn’t care too much about “Hal”, were more into his privacy or had decided to be a different type of couple. So I guess we can’t expect much with baby Cameron/Carmella, but I am confident their privacy will be very well protected. In fact I’d feel safe betting we will, in fact, despite the relentless paps who chase this poor family day and night, never catch a glimpse of him/her.

Lama nggak lihat Julia Stiles, makanya aku memutuskan untuk memasukan series ini ke dalam watchlist-ku. Di sini dia memerankan Georgina Clios, istri muda dari seorang pengusaha kaya. Aku nggak begitu ngerti apa bidang usaha suaminya selain sebagai orang yang gemar ikutan lelang benda-benda antik macam lukisan yang nilainya sangat tinggi. Georgina menjadi perwakilan suaminya dalam menawar harga.

Di episode satu ini, suaminya, Constantine Clios (Anthony LaPaglia), udah langsung mati dalam sebuah kebakaran kapal pesiar, yang entah disengaja atau enggak. Dari kematian itu, Georgina menemukan beberapa keterangan aneh yang dia dapat dari Delormes (Amr Waked), detektif yang menyelidiki kasus tersebut. Keanehan pertama adalah ditemukannya seorang wanita tanpa busana yang merupakan korban selamat dari kebakaran tersebut, yang diyakini adalah wanita terakhir yang bersama Constantine sebelum kebakaran terjadi. Korban ini nyaris dibunuh ketika masih menjalani perawatan di rumah sakit.

Selain itu, istri tuanya, Irina (Lena Olin) pun bilang kalau Georgina sebenarnya bukan tipe idaman Constantine. Dia juga menambahkan kalau banyak hal yang nggak diketahui oleh Georgina mengenai suaminya. Sebelumnya pun, Georgina sempat dibuntuti oleh seorang pengemudi motor. Pokoknya, banyak banget misteri semenjak kematian suaminya.

Btw, aku kan nonton ini di Iflix karena memang cuma ada di sana. Adegan sex tentunya di cut, dong. Tapi gara-gara itu juga, ada bagian penting yang terlewatkan. Aku sempat baca di IMDb kalau di kapal pesiar itu suaminya ikutan pesta orgy. Makanya dia merahasiakan kepergiannya pada Georgina. Ini kan suatu fakta yang makin bikin misterius. Iya, kan? Bukan scene orgy-nya, tapi fakta bahwa suaminya ikutan pesta orgy. Ngapain coba? Pasti ada sesuatu di balik itu selain cuma buat senang-senang.

Serius. Aku nggak penasaran lagi sama pesta orgy karena udah pernah lihat di filmnya Tom Cruise, Eyes Wide Shut, dan itu terbilang menjijikan. Seandainya aku nggak baca sinopsis Riviera itu, aku akan kehilangan satu fakta ini. Awalnya aku mengira suaminya cuma selingkuh doang sama korban wanita yang selamat itu. Sensor kadang memang menyesatkan.

Korban wanita itu pun sebenarnya tampak misterius. Sebelum dia nyemplung ke laut, dia kayak melempar sesuatu gitu. Nggak mungkin juga bom sih karena nggak langsung meledak. Mmm, bisa aja itu bom waktu? Entahlah.

Salah satu bagian menarik dalam series ini tentunya adalah settingnya (which is in France) dan kehidupan para orang kaya yang tampak “nggak bahagia”. Anak perempuan Constantine, Adriana, dengan nekatnya menyayat-nyayat urat nadinya tapi nggak ada seorang pun yang peduli! Atau mereka nggak lihat? Padahal nggak jauh di belakangnya ada pelayan yang lagi jaga. Untung datang Irina. Adriana kayaknya anak kandungnya Irina tapi dia seakan benci sama Irina. Malah lebih dekat ke Georgina, yang notabene adalah ibu sambungnya. Tapi kadang dia juga seperti berada di pihak Irina. Entahlah. Mungkin dia memang labil. Terutama semenjak kematian ayahnya.

Kesimpulannya, episode satunya lumayan. Ceritanya bikin penasaran. Akting pemeran Irina antara menarik dan enggak. Begitu juga dengan pemeran Constantine dan semua anak-anaknya. Yang wajahnya familiar banget di series ini ya cuma Julia Stiles. Selebihnya, aku nggak begitu tahu.

absolutely fucking STUNNING piece of theater & literature alike. this play is so sharply alive, dancing from shakespearean dialect to colloquialism in a breath, and it’s simultaneously so angry and so optimistic, and it’s a stunning piece of art about the complexities of a black man’s love for shakespeare, and it should be required reading at the end of any edition of Othello
