Regarding your lesbian nun essay-
You argue that Benedetta believed it was an angel or Christ working through her when she committed lesbian sex acts. I do wonder, could it have been that Benedetta simply told authorities this to protect herself and her lover? It would have been an easy lie considering her history of visions, and people have come up with bigger lies for less.
I'm also wondering if you have any more sources about relationships (romantic or otherwise) between Medieval nuns.
I did consider, of course, that she may have been lying. From a modern, secular perspective it seems like the most obvious answer. There are a few reasons, however, I believe that she was speaking honestly--at least that she percieved it as honest. First of all, there is the fact, as you mentioned, that Benedetta had a long history of experiencing divine visions and revelations (unrelated to lesbianism) starting when she was 23. Members of the church were aware of this and other nuns had witnessed her going into a trace-like state. She also had visions of being attacked by men which she believed came from the Devil, which is why she was assigned to live with Bartholomea (the woman whom she later had an affair with) in the first place, as a spiritual protector. She had a vision of recieving stigmata, and these stigmata were allegedly seen by others in the convent, which led to her being selected as Abbess.
If we choose to believe that she was not totally lying about all these visions, which is my perspective, then it is not that much a stretch that there would be truth to this as well. I also wanted to propose it because to say she was lying is very obvious from a modern perspective and I wanted to challenge that assumption and make people consider a more potentially nuanced relationship between religious visions and lesbianism.
My point is, I personally think the idea that this is all a complete lie would be counterintuitive. If she simply wanted to cover her affair with Bartholomea, reporting these visions would make no sense as it drew a huge amount of attention to her--in fact it was because of these visions that she was investigated by the church and her affair was discovered in the first place.
I think it is likely that Benedetta experienced some sort of mental illness which caused her to experience hallucinations and delusions--at the time, of course, the church came to the conclusion that she had a "demonic obsession." I personally think that in the context of her long history of reported visions and strange behavior unrelated to her affair, it is likely that she believed to some extent that her justifications were true.
As for your second question, I would definitely like to put together some more info on lesbian nuns soon, and other lesbians from medieval Europe, so you can look forward to that!
