Tips for a Carleton University Science Student
Textbooks
Don’t by used books until you’re sure that you don’t need an access code for a homework website
If you need a $200 chemistry textbook that comes with the access code, and you buy the book used, you’ll probably only get the book for as cheap as $50 at a used quality, and the access code on its own is usually $150 anyway, so you’re actually losing out rather than saving by buying used books; buy books new if you need the access code with it
Make sure you actually need the textbook before buying it, if you look in the syllabus and there’s only one reading, you probably don’t need to shell out $100 for it
Email the prof if the textbook information hasn’t been provided for you ahead of the class and you want to get ahead in your readings
Sometimes you can buy a previous edition for cheaper than the most recent and the prof is usually cool with this; the homework questions are different but the profs often have sample ones to give from the old textbook as well as the new, and important figures you need for the midterm/exam you can get from a friend with the newer version of the textbook
Carleton students: go to Haven Books instead of the Campus Book Store
Be careful when looking for used books, not everyone is trustworthy to buy from, especially if you’re buying from someone on the Facebook used book group
Always flip through the textbook to make sure there aren’t any chunks of pages missing, and if it truly isn’t highlighted like said in the ad; check if there are separate booklets that usually come with the textbook when bought new and make sure you get those too
Try and bargain with the seller, often upper year students are just trying to get rid of their old books and if you ask for a lower price they will probably say yes
LOOSELEAF textbooks are the best!!!! They save you like $50-100 and all you have to do is buy a binder for like $10 (you need a sturdy one for heavy textbooks like for biology)
Don’t open the plastic until you’re 10000% positive you have the right textbook (and make sure you have the one that comes with the access code if you need one for the class) because you can’t return it once opened (except if you return it as a used book)
If there is an electronic copy available and you can (legally) print it, do it! Being able to highlight it and hold it in your hands while waiting for the midterm hall doors to open is (in my opinion) better than just having it saved to your desktop
Rent textbooks through the campus book store
The (Carleton) library has a reserve section that has textbooks that you can borrow for a few hours (while still in the library) so you don’t have to buy them; however, not all prof’s put their textbooks on reserve and there aren’t endless copies so someone else may have it when you want to read it
Take good care of your textbooks so you can sell them next year
Sell them back to students rather than the bookstore so you can get more money to help pay for your textbooks for the new year
It’s harder to sell the books with highlighting and marking in them so an alternative is to use sticky notes in your book (a little costly if you want nicely coloured ones and such but pretty and keeps the textbook pristine)
Personally, I use pencil because I can just underline important bits, which I actually find makes me engage in the material more than highlighting, and I could erase it to sell it again (instead I’m just giving the books to my sister next year so she gets them free, lucky her, lol!)
A word on e-books: they expire after the course is over, so you can’t sell them after and if you failed the course/want to re-take it to improve your grade, you have to buy the text again
If you have friends taking the class with you, split the cost of the book with them!
Picking Classes
The Carleton Central website is not user friendly at all. I hated every minute I had to use it when I first accepted my offer; to combat this: I suggest going on the website and feeling around it to get used to it and figure out where all the important links are before going on it to set stuff up
Set up your school email as soon as possible because if you have any issues figuring out how to use the website to set up residence/meal plan/etc. you can ask for help, but no one will answer your emails if they’re not from your Carleton email (this is for privacy reasons, they’re not trying to be difficult)
At Carleton, you can set up your timetable in advance of when you actually have to register for classes; do this as soon as the opportunity arises because the classes fill up fast on registration day and you don’t want to still be figuring out which section and time and everything when you need to just click the “register” button and be done with it
Speaking of registration, you will receive a time-slot based on your student number/last name (I forget which) so don’t worry too much about classes filling up before you get your chance
If a class required for your program fills up before your time-slot opens don’t panic yet; several classes have online sections where they live stream the lecture and you can watch it that way, and if the regular section is full then you’ll just have to register in the online section.
You can still go to class rather than watching it online, and most people do this; my chemistry class had people sitting on the stairs and on the floor at the front of the lecture hall for the first two weeks before people decided if they’d rather watch online or in the lecture hall; the only thing this really affects is where you write your mid-terms and exams, and if you complete your teaching-evaluations in-class, or online
I hate to break this to you, but if you’re in a science program, having one day completely free in first year is not a reality (if you get one please tell me how). I can almost 100% guarantee that you will have lectures every day
Mental Heath & Self-Care
Allow yourself mental health days where you can skip your classes to recover without feeling guilty about it
Don’t take classes at 8:30am if possible, even if you’re a morning person, you will regret it
Especially don’t take 8:30 labs because you can’t miss those without a doctors note
Don’t pull all-nighters in the library when its open 24 hours during exams. Go home. Shower. Eat real food instead of just snacks you brought to the library with you. SLEEP. IN YOUR OWN BED
Try not to fall into that hole of all-nighters where you start rewarding yourself for completing an assignment with a shower or something that’s a basic necessity. You shouldn’t put getting work done above taking care of yourself, no matter how important the assignment or lab report
TAKE BREAKS. It’s okay every once in a while studying, you don’t have to just curl up with a textbook in some corner of the library and study it until your hair falls out, you’ll remember more anyway if you allow your brain some time to absorb the information (trust me, I’m here learning to be a neuroscientist)
Fun fact: you can cry from any emotion. Why is this relevant in a list of tips for new university students? Because you will probably get overwhelmed at some point and cry, and crying is good for you, and also natural. Emotions are chemical levels in your brain and your body is constantly trying to maintain homeostasis (equilibrium, balance, etc.); if your brain notices that there is a lot (or too much) of once chemical, it will try and get rid of it. One way to do this is to package up those chemicals all nice and neat into tears and flush them out. (hint: this is why we feel better after crying, because those emotions were essentially “cried out”). So don’t try and hold everything in because you don’t want your family or new friends to know you’re struggling, because not only is it okay to cry, but your friends are likely just as overwhelmed and your family must know how hard you’re working and how hard school is. You can cry because you’re overwhelmed or because you’re happy or because you watched a wonderful movie (e.g. Moana) and all this means is that you are beautifully and wonderfully human! (pro tip: drink water after crying)
Keep a clean room; I know this sounds annoying but it will help clear your mind and give you a healthy study space. Coming home from a long day of classes and labs to a messy room might only make you more stressed
Drink some water you fool
Naps are cool as heck
Instead of making a competition out of how high your stress levels are, brag about feeling whole and at peace (and if you aren’t, pretend until you believe it)
If you have anxiety, cut out caffeine from your life (even if you don’t have anxiety this is a good idea to do) (I know some really good caffeine-free teas)
Don’t beat yourself up about not getting everything done, just do your best to get as much done as you can (sometimes, mental illness means your best is only doing one of your two assigned readings, this is okay)
One of the biggest lies you will be told in your life is “don’t half-ass anything”; waiting around for the day where you can do absolutely everything you need to do when you have a mental illness or even if you’re still getting adjusted to your new responsibilities as a university student (and adjusting doesn’t just take a few days or weeks, it’s a continual process) is silly, that day may never come. Do as much as your illness permits you to do. If all you can do is make your bed while the rest of your room is a mess, just make your bed. If all you can do is type the heading for your resume, just do that. If all you can do is put the papers for your taxes in a pile, do that, and take a shower or rest. You don’t have to do everything at once, it is okay to just do a little bit
There are 5 things to ask yourself if you’re feeling particularly yucky and don’t know why:
Have I eaten anything substantial recently? Eat an apple or go to the school cafeteria/make something at home
Have I had anything to drink? Grab a bottle of water
Have I slept a decent amount in the last 24 hours, and in the days before that? Take a nap
Have you engaged in any exercise or movement recently? Go for a walk
Have I spoken to anyone at all in the last while? Text or call a friend/family member
Essentially: eat, drink, sleep, walk, and talk
The pomodoro technique is lifeeeee!!!!! Study for 20 minutes or so and then take a break, then repeat (after about three sessions, reward yourself with a longer break than before); if you can’t focus, this is a great way to get a little bit of work done
If you have an IOS device, I recommend the app Tide
Residence & Meal Plans
Apply for residence as soon as possible because although most schools guarantee an offer for first years, they really only mean before the deadline and after that you’ll be on a waitlist. If you get off the waitlist and get a room offer, it probably won’t be in one of the buildings with air conditioning, an elevator, or windows that actually open
If you plan on having a job while at school, you can ask to be in a residence building that remains open over the holidays (this does cost extra though, and for some reason, despite this being an option at Carleton, and that you’re not allowed a hot plate or other cooking device in traditional style rooms; virtually all the places to eat on campus are closed for the entire winter break, including the caf)
On holidays and reading week, the caf closes like, 2 hours early, this sucks. More times than I’d like to admit, I forgot it was a holiday and went to go get dinner at my usual time to find the doors were locked and it didn’t open again until 7:30 the next morning, with literally every other food place closed for the holiday, Mr. Noodles was the only option remaining. Don’t do this to yourself, please
At Carleton you have to rent mini-fridges through a company with the school called coldex
The prices aren’t bad and you can always split with your roommate if you’re in a double room
A bonus of this is that if you order it before a certain date, the fridge will already be in your room when you arrive on move-in day
I haven’t heard of people sneaking in their own and what happens if the school finds out, but I still wouldn’t recommend bringing your own (you don’t want to have to hide a whole mini-fridge when inspections come around)
Move-in day is hectic
Arrive as soon as possible to get it out of the way so you can start exploring campus, check out the cafeteria, and go to some events for frosh week
There are volunteers to help you bring your stuff up to your room so no need to bring your entire extended family (unless you want them all there, of course)
If you have prescriptions of any kind, then switch your pharmacy to the on-campus one and write down the hours somewhere
A few words on the dorms:
Most of the desks have a built-in lamp so don’t buy a desk lamp before you know if you need one
They also have a push-pin board so bring pins to hang your pictures and class schedule
Christmas lights go a long way to making the place more home-y
Buy a coat rack that goes over the front door, and one of those shoe organizers to go over the bathroom door and fill it with all kinds of things
 Bring lots of storage bins
Buy one of those fabric shower caddies that go over the shower head so you can all keep your soap organized in the bathroom (the showers don’t have very much shelf space and it can be a pain to carry all your soap in and out, especially when it’s all wet from your shower
The room should come with a garbage and recycling bin, but might not have one for the bathroom as a heads up
Act like your parents are visiting once a week and tidy everything up
Labs
If you are a science or engineering student, you will definitely have labs, lots if you’re in science
Most labs (i.e. chemistry and physics) are every two weeks, and sometimes they have a tutorial on the opposite week (chemistry doesn’t, you just have an empty three-hour slot on one week).
Biology labs at carleton are every week, going from experimental labs one week to analytical labs the next week (sometimes theres a computer simulation lab the week before the experimental, so in that case the lab topic spans three weeks)
You will usually have two weeks to write your lab report and then hand it in at the beginning of your next lab session, but sometimes they only give you one week (this is good and bad at the same time) DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE TO WRITE A FORMAL LAB REPORT
They take at least 6 hours to write and thats once you get the hang of it and 6 hours will probably still only get you an 80%
Informal lab reports (write-ups) you can probably get away with doing the nigh before but don’t be surprised if you get a 60% with only that much work put into it
Don’t forget to do the lab assignments online, they are usually worth a lot towards your grade for that lab (even if you do the multiple choice quiz real quick before the lab starts, it’s better than nothing)
Go to the Science Store as early as possible to buy your lab coat, glasses, notebook, and manual, the lines are crazy long
You can’t buy an older version of the lab manual to use for a new lab session, they won’t let you and if they find out you’re using an older version of the manual, they could decide to give you zero on everything. They change little things so you might end up doing the wrong thing in your experiment which can be very bad if its a chemistry lab for example.
If you don’t know something, or are unsure, ask the TA. Even if you’re mostly sure, ask the TA. Most labs are designed to take exactly there hours if you do everything correctly the first time, so if you do something wrong, you can end up rushing to finish before the lab ends
THEY WILL NOT LET YOU STAY LATE TO FINISH YOUR LAB
If you do happen to finish your lab early, instead of leaving as soon as the TA signs you out, do some calculations you’ll need for the report, you will thank yourself sooooo much later I’m not even exaggerating. One time I started them at the end of my lab and then forgot about it and you better believe there were tears of joy in my eyes when I opened up my lab notebook to start the report later and saw that I had already started
Decorate your lab coat!!! Spice it up!! Spell your name in the periodic table across the back, cover it in sharpie! Put your favourite science joke on the pocket! Have fun!
Roommates
Roommates can be a blessing or a curse; if they’re a curse, switch to another room as soon as possible
If you can’t stand your roomate, then you’re only going to be more stressed when you’re at home on top of all the stresses of your new life as a university student, and that’s not good
All roommates and canmates have to sign a roommate agreement once you’ve settled in
A canmate is someone living in the room that adjoins your bathroom (most Rez buildings are designed with two rooms sharing a bathroom)
Reach out to your roommate once you’ve been told who they are so that you can meet up before move-in day if possible to get to know each other, get each other’s phone number
If you’re thinking of renting a mini-fridge, see if your roommate wants to split the cost of one so you can share!
Consider buying a silent alarm (its basically a watch that vibrates to wake you up instead of ringing) and earplugs so that you don’t have to wake each other up if one of you has an 8:30 while the other doesn’t have class until noon
Make sure you both agree with the decisions made in your roommate agreement, don’t agree to anything that you’re not comfortable with.
Remember that its just as much your room as theirs, and vice versa
Understand that dorm rooms are small, so don’t be afraid to voice your preferences and concerns; communication is key and it keeps everyone happy
Try to be understanding; don’t give your roommate a hard time about something they have no control over
When it comes to alcohol or other substances, be open and honest about what is okay and what isn’t
Officially you’re only allowed 2 guests per roommate in the room at once (so 6 total), but unless you’re being loud and disrupting the whole floor, nobody is going around and policing it
As with room capacity, there is a set limit on how many times you can have overnight guests, but nobody is really counting (except maybe your roommate)
Definitely give each other a copy of your class schedule
Some people like to leave their door open so that you can go in and meet them, it may be awkward but you should totally go for it! Most people are really shy and won’t go in, but you can still leave your door open too
Go to floor meetings (officially they are kind of required) to meet people, and also because they usually provide snacks or participation prizes (I won a $10 Tims card at my first meeting)
If you’re going to come home at 3AM drunk with friends after a night of bar hopping in Quebec, then get a single room
Your roommate doesn’t want to wake up to the sound of you kissing your S.O.
Do the dishes as soon as you can, don’t let them fester and grow old because you hate washing dishes in the tiny sink Don’t snoop, we all have things we like to keep to ourselves
 If you’re going to hook up with someone in the room while your roommates away, make sure they’re not going to come back early. And don’t forget to dead-bolt the door and lock the bathroom so they don’t go through the canmates room thinking their key card is just broken
Share emergency information with each other; do you have a history of seizures that they should be aware of? Any allergies like peanuts so they know not to keep peanut butter in the room? And if you’re unconscious being sent to the hospital, whom should they call?
Always use headphones/earbuds. Even if your roommate has the same taste in music or likes the same movies/TV shows, wear them for the love of all that is good in the world. Get a headphone splitter if you want to watch a movie with a friend on your laptop.
Meeting New People
Academic orientation day was honestly the best time for me to make friends; everyone I talked to that day was either in my faculty or a related program (if not the same program as me). My closest friend now is a girl I met on academic orientation day who’s in my program, and we got to study for all our classes together and since we had such similar schedules, we had the same blocks of free time to hang out.
Make friends with people in your program. You can keep each other on track with your studies, explain concepts to each other, quiz each other, work on assignments together, and so many more things; you can hang out and study at the same time which is a really great thing
If you have friends from high school going to the same university as you, but in a program nothing like yours, then you’re probably going to have a hard time finding space in both your schedules to hang out. Make the best effort you can to hang out anyway
You know those people you can see rolling their eyes at you from the corner of your eye? Don’t make friends with them. They don’t have your back and they don’t care enough to listen to you when you’re talking about your personal struggles. Don’t waste time on someone who wouldn’t give their time to you
disclaimer: the information provided here is based mainly on my experiences as a neuroscience student at Carleton University, as well as from other sources that I looked at for ideas on what else to add here.

Tempting Fate - Part Five
Tumblr media
Paring: Tommy Shelby x Reader
Warnings: Nothing major, but there is lots of smoking, particularly marijuana.
Word Count: 2,098
Story Summary: Tommy is not a believer in fate or destiny. However, a new resident in Small Heath will question his beliefs and push his boundaries outside his comfort zone.
A/N: Remember, this story takes place during season two of the show. May Carleton makes an appearance in this chapter. Once again, I included Romani phrases in this chapter. I found the phrase online and hope it is correct. If it isn’t, then I am profoundly sorry and do not wish to offend anyone. That is never my intent. Remember, there is no Grace or Greta in this fic. They do not exist in the realm of this alternate universe.
Please do not post any of my fics to other sites without my permission.

You did not know what you and Tommy were to each other. The terms “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” didn’t seem right as it was too mundane and basic. However, you and Tommy had grown a little be closer after you both apologized for miscommunicating with one another. Tommy would often walk you home at night after work and stay the night. It became routine for you to wake up next to him in the morning, which was nice and comforting.
For Tommy, being with you was nothing he had ever experienced before. Before the war, he would go on dates every once in a while, but nothing ever lasted longer than a week or two. After the war, it was all one-night stands or nights spent at whore houses. However, with you, it was all new for him. There was something about being with you that Tommy could not quite describe the feeling until Polly coaxed it out of him.
“Safe. Thomas, you feel safe for the first in a long time. Being with this girl will change your life for the better. She is good for you. The two of you will balance one another, her lightness with your darkness. However, there is a darkness in her as well, just as I can see the light in you, my dear nephew. But make no mistake, it is still in you to do some good in this world. Let her help,” Polly explained one day while Tommy was in his office.
Leaning back in his chair, Tommy could nothing but agree with his aunt, “I know that Pol. Part of me is terrified.” He went on to tell Aunt Polly that he didn’t want to “ruin” you or get you hurt, but Polly waved him off.
“Tommy, she can take care of herself. As a gypsy, she has seen things in her life, just like you. Remember, you said it yourself. She is you. And you are her. You are each other’s match.”
One thing about being connected to Tommy was that people around Small Heath treated you differently. The women smiled at you more, while the men tipped their hats to you and greeted you with “mam” or “miss.” It was all new to you.
Even the male patrons at the bar treated you differently. No longer did they affectionately give you a hard time or joke around with you. They maintained their distance but were respectful. You particularly noticed how the men made sure to act accordingly around you whenever Tommy stopped by The Garrison. It was the same when John and Arthur were around.
You were in the back room of the bar when Esme stopped by one afternoon. She greeted you with a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Let’s go for a walk down by the Cut, yeah,” Esme suggested. “It is slow out there. I am sure Harry could give you a break.”
“Okay. Let me finish up these last few glasses, then we can head out,” You replied to the woman who was quickly becoming your best friend. You were thankful to have Esme around. She was another person you could confide in. Esme reminded you of your sisters back home and how much you missed them. You pushed the homesick feeling aside and finished cleaning the last bar glass. Wiping your hands on your apron, Esme followed you to the front of the bar.
You told Harry that you were taking your break. “Harry, I won’t be gone too long, okay.”
“Take your time, dear. I don’t think I’ll be expecting a rush anytime soon,” said Harry wiping down the tables.
While the two you walked arm-in-arm, Esme asked how you were holding up now that you were considered Tommy’s “girl” and all. “I’m not his girl, Esme,” you laughed off your friend’s accusation.
Esme rolled her eyes. “Don’t act naïve now, my dear friend. You are Tommy’s girl. Everyone knows it. He better be treating you right. If he doesn’t, I’ll cut his balls right off.”
“So, far so good. He has been very…I don’t know…” you began but stopped to try to collect your thoughts.
“What?” Esme asked.
“It is like there are two sides to Tommy, you know: public Tommy and private Tommy,” you began to explain. “In public, Tommy is always guarded, which I get. He has to be with what he does. However, when it is the two of us alone, he is something else. He is so sweet and gentle. He smiles more too. And laughs. Tommy has the cutest laugh I have ever heard. So delightful to the ears.”
Esme smiled at her friend and said, “I have never once heard Tommy laugh. Didn’t even know he could do such a thing.”
“So, when are you and John any closer to expanding your family? Lord knows you both like the activity that goes with procreation.”
“Not yet. But hopefully soon. The kids are looking forward to having another brother or sister in the mix. I’m lucky, you know. I was worried that John’s children wouldn’t accept when we got married. I was worried that I would never be able to live up to Martha as a wife or mother,” Esme revealed to you as the two of you finally reached the Cut.
Sitting on a box crate, Esme sat down beside you. She pulled out a rolled cannabis cigarette and began to light it. Coughing out a puff, she passed the joint over to you. “John loves you very much, Esme. The kids adore you. Why wouldn’t they? You are so much fun, so sweet, caring, and they will always have your back. Kids have pure hearts. They can sense when someone is a good person, and you fit the bill. You’re special, my dear. Everyone is lucky to grace your presence sees what a wonderful woman you are.”
Blushing, Esme looked down at her feet. “You could give John a run for his money with the way you can talk a woman up.”
You chuckled and took in a puff. The effects of the rolled cannabis were setting in and making you feel relax and calm. It was a nice feeling. The two of you sat in comfortable silence while passing the joint back and forth.
You and Esme turned heads when commotion came from Charlie’s Yard. “I wonder what is going on over there?” you wondered aloud and handed Esme the joint. “I’m going to go check it out. You want to come along?”
“Nah, I better get back to the house,” said Esme and stubbed out the joint and put it in her pocket. “See you later.”
You waved goodbye and walked over to Charlie’s. You saw him and Curly with Pyramus. Instantly, you saw the horse was agitated. You picked up your speed to reach the horse.
“Hey, what is going on? Is he okay?” you asked, concerned for Pyramus’s well-being.
Charlie told you that they were getting Pyramus ready for transport, but the horse was not up for it.
“I told you it wasn’t a good idea,” Curly mumbled. “He doesn’t want to leave, Charlie.”
Charlie merely sighed, “Curly, the horse will be fine. He is stubborn as usual, like his owner.”
“May I?” you asked Charlie. When he gave you an okay, you reached out to Pyramus and began rubbing his muzzle. “It’s okay, boy. You’re going to okay. Rum tum bi Salama (Go in peace),” you said to Pyramus softly. “Si tut bocklo? (Are you hungry?)”
You turned to Curly and asked he had any treats for Pyramus. “It might help him calm down. He loves apples or carrots,” you told him.
“I might have some around. I’ll be back,” said Curly and left to retrieve the treats.
You continued to pet Pyramus, which seemed to help calm him for the time being. It only got better when Curly returned with an apple, which you began to cut up for Pyramus to eat. “He seems to be more relaxed.”
All of a sudden, an extra pair of footsteps could be heard approaching. You could make out Tommy’s voice not too far, but there was another voice with him. A feminine voice. One you had not heard before. You quickly turned around to see Tommy walking with a beautiful woman. From the looks of her clothes, you could tell she was wealthy.
When Tommy saw you with Pyramus, he smiled at you and introduced you to the woman, May Carleton. She would be the one to train Pyramus. You shook her hand and offered a ‘hello.’ She went up the horse and began petting him along with you.
You told her that Pyramus tended to respond well with treats when stressed. May smiled at you. “He is a beautiful horse. Overly sweet, but he will make a good racehorse,” May remarked and turned back to Tommy. “The timeline you want the horse ready for Epsom is not much, but I can get him ready.”
You didn’t care for how May only referred to Pyramus as “the horse.” It was like she only viewed him as a job and not one of God’s best creatures. You looked over at Pyramus, and he was happily chomping away at his apple. He was too innocent for a life as a racehorse. The last thing you wanted was for Pyramus to be broken. You could feel the panic start to rise in your chest and your breath start to quicken. You didn’t know if it was anxiety or the joint you just smoked making you feel that way.
“Tommy,” you spoke up and got his attention. You motioned with your hand for him to follow, which he obliged. When the two of you were away from the others, you spoke your concerns. “How much do you know about this May Carleton? Is she trustworthy? What are her methods for training a horse?” you went on, but Tommy silenced you by placing a kiss on your lips.
When Tommy retreated, he cupped your face and looked at you with adoring eyes. “Pyramus will be taken care of, I promise. I would not send him away if I didn’t know that he would be treated well. May’s family has a long history of training racehorses. She knows what she is doing.”
You breathed a sigh of relief at Tommy’s reassurance. Now you felt silly. “I’m sorry for worrying. You probably think I’m childish,” you expressed quietly, looking down at the ground.
Tommy touched your chin to make you look at him directly. His blue eyes always left you breathless. You could drown in them if you stared too long. No amount of alcohol, cannabis, opium, or other drugs could compare to Tommy Shelby’s effects on you. He was addicting. He was handsome. He was dangerous. He was cruel. He was scary. He could also be kind and sweet-tempered. Tommy Shelby was an enigma. He would become a stain on your existence one way or another, and there was nothing you could do to stop it.
“Sijoukar,” you said suddenly.
When Tommy asked who, you scoffed. “May. She is pretty. Don’t you think?”
“Hadn’t noticed.”
“Liar,” you teased. “Even I can admit she is gorgeous. It’s okay. I don’t mind if you think other women are attractive. It is part of human nature.”
With a smirk, Tommy wrapped his arms around you and gave you one last deep kiss. “You better get back to work. I’ll see you late tonight, and I’ll walk you home, yeah.”
He walked you towards the exit with his hand in yours. You waved goodbye to Curly and Charlie and gave a polite nod to May. You didn’t miss the brief look of disappointment on May’s face when she saw you and Tommy walk past her hand-in-hand. You smirked when you passed the woman.
“I’ll tell you what, how about after a couple of weeks, we go visit Pyramus? See how he is doing and all. You and me, together,” suggested Tommy as you both neared the Yard’s exit.
“Really?” you asked, bewildered at Tommy’s idea.
“Why not? It would be our first adventure together. What do you say?”
“I like that idea. Oh, think of a fun and trouble we could get into. I don’t think the world is ready for us, Mr. Shelby,” you laughed and wrapped your arms around Tommy’s shoulders.
Again, kissing you on the lips, Tommy leaned into your ear to whisper, “We are going to set the world on fire, love. You and me, love.”

Ballad of a Shelby and a Solomons
Summary: Following the events of Burned. Ruby Shelby and Teddy Solomons fall in love.
@justanothershelby Because I love you and I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough time.

Birmingham-1948
         “I’m in love with Teddy Solomons.”
          Arthur Shelby was far too old for this shit. He couldn’t handle the scares that he used to be able to experience every day. Normally, he was pretty quick on his feet, maybe less so than his younger self. But the announcement from his niece completely caught him off guard. So much so that he spat out his whiskey.
          The eldest Shelby was sat with his brother at the Garrison, a few hours before it was due to open for the night. It was a little odd because Tommy seldom visited Birmingham. He was far too busy in the Commons to visit Small Heath. Likewise, Ruby rarely traveled back and forth. Either she was in London or in Warwickshire.
          “Solomons?” Arthur sputtered, his face already turning red.
          Tommy stood behind the bar much calmer than his brother. A hint of a smug smile crossed his face. He knew almost instantly that the two young adults were going to spark up something. The way Teddy could hardly speak clearly in front of her and the way Ruby’s fair complexion turned bright red under his eyes.
          “You’ve met up with him again?” Tommy asked.
          Arthur was practically spasming with anger. “As in Alfie Solomons?!”
          “Yes.” Ruby held her head high, her lips pursed. She looked just like her mother when she gave him that confident look. “Several times, in fact, and I love him.”
          “Tom!” Arthur erupted. “You knew ‘bout this?”
          “Easy, brother,” Tommy replied coolly. “The two met when I was going to see Louise’s new foal. He’s a very respectable young man.”
          Ruby was a little surprised by her father’s steady demeanor. She expected there to be an issue, like the issue her uncle was clearly having. “Well-well, yes he is.” She hesitated and narrowed her eyes suspiciously. Why on Earth was he being so nonchalant about the whole issue. When she was younger, Ruby had declared her love for one of the Lee boys. Granted she was only fourteen and it was simply because the teenager could tame any unruly horse. When Tommy heard the news, he had a fit and threatened the boy to stay far, far, far, away from his beloved daughter.
          So that was that. Ruby never saw the boy again. But now she was confessing her adoration for the son of an old colleague. Rival? Friend? The details were murky.
          “Louise said he served during the Second War.” Tommy poured himself and his brother another glass of whiskey.
          Arthur gave him a flustered glare. Like Ruby, he was bewildered by Tommy’s reaction.
          “Yes.” Ruby nodded.
          Tommy beckoned for his daughter to sit at the bar and poured her a gin and tonic. Warily, she sat down beside her uncle. “Where did he serve?”
          “France. Like you.” Ruby replied. “He was hurt by a grenade. You should see the scar, nearly lost his entire leg. He’s so brave.” She chewed on her lip when she thought of the handsome young man who had won her over.
          “You’ve seen the scar?” Arthur demanded. “On his leg? Under what fucking circumstances!?”
          “Pral.” Tommy hushed him.
          “We went swimming behind his home in Surrey.” Ruby lifted her chin again, pretending not to be bothered. “It isn’t 1920, Uncle Arthur.”
          “Fucking…kids these days!” He threw up his hands.
          “I’m not a kid!” She argued. “I’m an adult and so is Teddy. He almost died serving our country just like you lot did so you shouldn’t treat him and fucking differently! He goes to university and he’s fucking smarter than any of you. And he loves me.”
          Arthur grimaced but shut his mouth, for the time being, downing the fresh drink Tommy put in front of him.
          “And he loves horses,” Ruby added, her blue eyes glancing over to her father.
          Tommy nodded in acknowledgment. “I know. Mrs. Carleton told me he’s a very gifted rider. Perhaps we ought to invite him on a hunt at Arrow House.” He suggested. “We can see what sort of a shot he is.”
          Ruby’s eyes lit up. “Really?” She jumped up and reached over the bar to hug her father tightly. “Thank you, daddy, I’ll call him right now!” She left the Garrison so quickly that she nearly tipped over the stool she was sitting on.
          Arthur pouted in his seat. “I don’t like it, Tom.” He muttered.
          “He’s nothing like Alfie.” He assured his brother. “And it doesn’t matter what either of us says anymore. She’s going to see him whether we like it or not.”
          Arthur grumbled his discontent but just shook his head. "Shelby women, aye?"
          "I'm afraid she won't be one for much longer." Tommy sighed and briefly wondered what Alfie would've done if he were still alive. A Shelby and a Solomons. Perhaps he would assume the world was crumbling.
Birmingham-The Midland Hotel-1950
Tumblr media
            “Mr. Shelby, would you like a drink?”
            The lobby of the Midland hotel was fairly quiet for a Friday morning. A few ladies sat together talking avidly amidst the lavish décor. A couple of businessmen greeted one another properly. A maid was busy dusting the many gilded ornaments around the large lobby. It had been refurbished after the war had ended, giving all the intricate fixtures and architecture life again.
            “Yes, bottle of whiskey, Irish. Bring the bottle ‘round.” Tommy answered one of the barkeeps as he slipped off his hat and sat down. He cleared his throat and checked his pocket watch.
            Perfectly on time, Teddy Solomons came in, shaking off his umbrella. He removed his hat and headed upstairs to the bar where Tommy said he’d be. He’d never been to the Midland before, in fact, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever been to Birmingham before. Well, before he met Ruby, that is. Sometimes she would be there visiting family and Teddy stopped by to say hello. More often than not, they’d both be in London. Ruby working in the family business and Teddy still in university.
            “Mr. Shelby.” Teddy smiled as he greeted him.
            Tommy stood up to shake his hand. “You can call me Tommy, known each other long enough.” He chuckled. “Have a seat, glad we could get together to chat you said it was important.”
            “Yes, sir.” Teddy sat down and set his cane to the side.
            Tommy took note as he pulled out a cigarette and lighter. “I didn’t know you walked with a cane.” In all the times he’d spoken to the young man, he hadn’t seen him with a walking cane. He noticed the limp, but only after Ruby mentioned it, Teddy did a good job of covering it.
            “Gets worse with the rain, I’m afraid.” Teddy grimaced lightly. He never liked calling attention to his limp. It was something he would much rather ignore if possible. It only brought up terrible memories. Memories of the grenade exploding near him. Fortunately, he didn’t recall much after that. Only remembered waking up to hearing a doctor discuss the possibility of amputation. After that, it was a long and torturous recovery. Having to comfort his mother when she worried over him. Learning to walk differently. All things he would rather forget.
            “Much different from your father’s.” Tommy smiled slightly. He could recall the slender, simple cane that Alfie sometimes toted around.
            “Yeah, my mum pulled it out but it was too weak.”
            “I thought sometimes he would carry it just for emphasis.” Tommy chuckled and shook his head. “Smoke?” He offered the pack to Teddy.
            “No, thank you.” Teddy declined politely.
            The man arrived with the whiskey, setting down two crystal glasses. “Anything else, Mr. Shelby?”
            “That’ll be all for now.” Tommy nodded and began pouring the whiskey. “So, what’s the matter of importance, Teddy?”
            “Well, Mr-erm-Tommy, as you know Ruby and I have been going steady for a couple of years now.” Teddy swallowed and tried to maintain a façade of confidence, even though his palms were sweating. He’d nearly lost a leg in Normandy but Tommy Shelby was just as terrifying. “And we’ve discussed the possibility, well, the future I suppose. That’s why I’d like to ask for your blessing.”
            Tommy had been half-expecting it. Ever since they’d met, Ruby had been head-over-heels for Teddy Solomons. The girl could hardly stop gushing about him. One night at dinner, Charlie finally had to shout at her to, ‘stop fucking talking about Teddy Bloody Solomons!’. That hadn’t ended well.
            As the years wore on, Tommy had gained a bit of softness. None for his enemies, political or not, but for his family and friends. Nothing brought him more joy than his beautiful princess smiling. And Teddy made her smile.
            So, when he called to request a meeting, Tommy assumed it could only mean one of two things. Either he wanted to ask for Ruby’s hand in marriage, or she had mistakenly gotten pregnant. Not that Tommy could really say anything about that, he’d gotten both Grace and Lizzie pregnant before he married them. Still, it was a relief that Teddy was requesting marriage instead of planning for a baby. Tommy wasn’t ready to be a grandfather yet.
            “I think that would be a wise choice. I doubt she’d marry anyone else and she’d most likely marry you without my blessing.” Tommy admitted. He had no one but himself to blame for his daughter’s stubbornness. “It would be in my own best interest to say yes.”
            A look of relief and happiness flooded Teddy’s eyes. “Thank you, sir. I promise I’ll give her everything I can. She’s very important to me.”
            Tommy held up his glass for a cheers. “I trust you’ll make a good husband.” Trust was scarce, but it could be afforded for the shy, polite, Solomons boy. Tommy could only imagine what Alfie would say if he were still alive.
Tumblr media
Warwickshire- June, 1951
            Teddy Solomons didn’t know how wild a Shelby party could get. Even a big blow out wedding didn’t seem to curb their thirst for a rowdy night. Luckily, Teddy’s side of the wedding guests didn’t seem to care much or they had been expecting such an affair. He didn’t care at all; in fact, it was all in good fun. His heart had been pounding all day. First out of nervousness, then out of shock when he first saw Ruby walking down the aisle, and then euphoria as they said their vows. He was breathless from dancing with her all night. And even though he was a bit awkward with his stiff leg, he couldn’t deny Ruby one more song.
            So, they kept dancing until Ruby wore herself out. That’s when Teddy suggested they get some air outside. His ears were ringing from the loud music and chattering from inside Arrow House so they had to adjust being out in the summer air. The soft sounds of crickets lulling his heartbeat.
            “I can’t wear these fucking shoes another moment.” Ruby groaned and bent down to take off her heels. She set them side on the patio.
            “Want to walk? Or do your feet hurt?” Teddy asked.
            “We can walk. Unless I’ve worn you out from dancing.” She teased and linked arms with her husband.
            “I might be sore in the morning.” He chuckled and kissed her temple. “It’ll be worth it though.” They started off past the garden and across the lawn. The lights from Arrow House fanning over the grass and dimly lighting their way. Fireflies blinked across the forest-line and the sky was clear of clouds. Every star seemed to be shining its brightest just for the occasion.
            Teddy stopped for a moment to look up at the half-moon hanging in the sky. “I wish my dad was here.” He said quietly. A hint of melancholy draping over him as he realized there was a piece missing. It’s how most occasions in his life felt. There was always something missing. Sometimes, Teddy didn’t realize what it was until he was alone with his thoughts.
            But it was always Alfie. How Teddy wished his father could be there to see him at his proudest moments.
            “Oh, Ted, he would be so proud of you.” Ruby touched his cheek.
            He leaned into her touch and nodded. “I know. I just think it would’ve been a bit more fun.” He smiled weakly. “Shelbys and Solomons aren’t supposed to mix, y’know.”
            She laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Well, what do you call this then?” She murmured before kissing him deeply.
Tumblr media
Warwickshire- April, 1952
         Teddy thought it was such a good idea. His brother-in-law had suggested he bring along the mare on the hunt. Apparently, she was a gift from the Lees and she was very green, hardly broken in at all.
But Charlie said he would be more than capable. And Teddy did not want to shy away from such a task. He’d only been married to Ruby for a little under a year, they’d been engaged for six months and dating for three years. Despite that amount of time, Teddy was still slightly terrified of the Shelby boys. He wasn’t too keen on Arthur unexpectedly grabbing him by the shoulders and jostling him around, he sweated under Tommy’s icy eyes, and didn’t care for Finn’s scathing remarks about his university studies. But it was all in love, at least that’s what Ruby said. Charlie was perhaps the hardest on Teddy, but as the older brother, it was to be expected.
Moments after the engagement at a family event, Charlie hugged Teddy, only to whisper in his ear.
“If you ever break her heart, I’ll fucking gut you and make you eat your intestines.”
All in good fun.
~~~~~~~~~
“You think you can handle her, Teddy?” Tommy asked as they began down the trail.
“That’s what he was asking himself when he proposed to Ruby.” Isaiah jeered and exchanged grins with Finn.
“Oi, enough.” Tommy glared at them. “Fucking beautiful day out, don’t want you idiots ruining it. Now jog on.” He shooed them off and began walking side by side with Teddy.
The young man’s face had gone a little pink. “She was steady on the cross-ties, didn’t fuss much when I tacked her up. Erm, not Ruby I uh-meaning the horse.”
Tommy chuckled and lit up a cigarette. “I knew your father very well. Not as well as your mother of course. But I did see a different side to him.”
A hint of a smile crept onto Teddy’s face. Before, he only used to get sad when Alfie was brought up. But as he grew into a man, he learned to accept the wisdom. Accept the things he never knew about the mysterious man. To listen to the people who had a clearer memory of him. They were his key to getting closer to his late father. “Mum said he was rough around the edges.”
“We were raised very similarly. Raised poor on the streets so we grew to have a rough side.” Tommy agreed, his eyes on the trail ahead of them, steadily moving along with his horse’s smooth walk. “He was fucking clever though. Never could underestimate him ‘less you wanted to get cut.” He let out a sigh, exhaling smoke into the foggy air. “I remember when he told me you were born. Just a little bit before Ruby was born. There was something in his eyes that I’d never seen before. He cared about your mother and you very deeply. That night he was willing to risk his life for you both.”
Teddy listened with bated breath. He wanted his father-in-law to tell him everything. Describe every interaction with Alfie. What was said, what they did, what he looked like, what his emotions were. He wanted to shed more light on the man in the photographs and the man in his dreams.
“You’re not much like him. Not in the way he conducted business.” Tommy clarified before the young man wilted in shame. “But I see the way you look at my daughter. It’s the same look that your father had. I know you would risk your life in order to save her.”
That was a no brainer for Teddy. If it came down to himself or Ruby, he wouldn’t have to think twice about it. “Of course. I would never let her be hurt.”
Tommy smiled slightly and nodded. “That’s how you and Alfie are alike. And it’s a good thing too. Loyalty is well-liked in this family.”
Before Teddy could say anything else, they came across a glen with tall grass. Isaiah, Finn, and Charlie had gone ahead and began hunting through the grass. Without warning, one of them shot wildly into the air.
The young horse under Teddy spooked and began to buck. He did his best to stay on but soon found himself thrown into the ground.
For a moment, he hadn’t even realized what happened. His thoughts became a little fuzzy. All he could process was the sound of the mare galloping off without him. Then, Tommy’s voice found his ears. He was ordering someone to catch the horse as he dismounted and jogged over to Teddy.
“You alright?” The Blinder knelt down and tried to assess any damage. “D’you hit your head?”
Teddy blinked a few times. “Don’t think so.” He groaned when he tried to move. “Can’t feel my fucking arm.”
“Think you landed on it.” Tommy reached out. “I’ll help you sit up. Easy then...”
“Fuck!” Teddy shouted when the movement caused a sharp pain shoot up his arm and into his collarbone.
“Easy, easy. Try to stay still.” Tommy stood. “Curly! D’we have any wraps for the horse’s legs?”
There were a number of footsteps that came running over. Arthur had managed to wrangle in the spooked mare while Isaiah, Finn, and Charlie came to see what the commotion was.
“Couldn’t handle her, Ted?” Charlie chuckled when he saw his brother-in-law sitting in the mud, clutching his arm.
“Oi!” Tommy grabbed his son by the back of the neck. “You fucking warn us when you’re going to shoot, you know that.” He scolded. “Now you can go back to the house with Teddy and explain to your sister what you’ve fucking done to her husband.” He smacked him on the face and went back to tend to Teddy. He did his best to create a makeshift sling with the leg wraps Curly had brought over. “And you better fucking hope that horse isn’t injured either. Now go.” He ordered.
Charlie grimaced but threw his rifle over his shoulder. “C’mon.” He held a hand out to Teddy to help him up.
~~~~~~~~~~
The two walked back down the muddy trail, Teddy clutching his arm, the wraps loosely supporting it.
“I didn’t mean to get you thrown, mate,” Charlie said after a few minutes of silence. “I really did think you would be able to ride her. Rubes always talks about how great of a rider you are.”
“It’s alright,” Teddy replied gently. He didn’t blame his brother-in-law for the incident. All in good fun, right?
Charlie shoved his hands into his pockets. “We’re all just tryna wind you up, you know that right?”
“Oh no, I…Ruby mentioned it wasn’t in malice.”
“Thing is, you’re Alfie Solomons’ son. Y’know people still talk about him? Talk about what he was like and you’re just-you’re very different.”
Teddy might’ve been irked had if not been for the conversation he just had with Tommy. Perhaps he wasn’t capable of the violence his father inflicted. But he would protect his own no matter what.
Charlie chuckled, interrupting Teddy’s thoughts. “You should slug Isaiah for what he said ‘bout Ruby.” He mentioned. “We all want to see if you can throw a punch.”
‘Oh, I’d rather not.” Yes, he’d never been in a fight before but none of the Peaky Blinders needed to know that.
Disappointed, Charlie sighed. “Alright then, I guess Ruby’ll handle it. She’ll never let me live this down.”
“She doesn’t have to know any details.” The two young men exchanged smiles, agreeing to secrecy.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ruby was outside on the lawn reading with her mother when her brother and husband came walking back. She was shocked to see the state Teddy was in, shooting up out of her chair and running towards him.
“What happened?!”
“I got thrown off,” Teddy admitted. “I’m alright, though.”
Ruby glared at her brother. “You put him on that wild mare, didn’t you?” She demanded. “I told you not to fucking do that, you fucking idiot!” She emphasized every word by smacking Charlie with her book.
“Hey, hey!” Her brother tried to bat her away. “Lay off!”
“It wasn’t his fault, love, I was too confident.” Teddy intervened, holding out his good arm to stop the literary assault.
Her forehead wrinkled and she pouted. “Oh, you must be in so much pain. Come inside, romer, I’ll take care of you.” She kissed his cheek and ushered him into Arrow House.
Charlie laughed and shook his head. “I’ll get you to throw a punch one of these days, Solomons!”
All in good fun.
Tumblr media
London-1954
            “Fucking hell, Rubes, you’re as big as a whale!” Charlie snickered.
            “Yeah? I could still probably kick your ass!” She snapped back at him but decided to slump down on the couch. It was Christmas and Ruby Solomons was due any day with her first child. Everyone was gathering at Polly’s home in London for the occasion but Ruby arrived before most guests were supposed to arrive.
            Polly smacked Charlie with a dish towel. “Be lucky you’re a man and never have to push out a baby.” She scolded. “Now help me in the kitchen.”
            Charlie sighed but obliged.
            Moments later, Tommy and Lizzie arrived. Lizzie greeted her daughter affectionately. “Oh, you’re just glowing!”
            “God, I feel like I’m dying,” Ruby complained and propped up her feet. “I just want it out of me. And I’m hungry too.” She groaned. “M’always hungry.”
            Lizzie smiled and kissed her forehead. “I’ll get you something to nibble on before dinner.” She promised and went into the kitchen.
            Tommy sat down in an armchair by the fire. “Where’s Teddy gone off to then?”
            “He dropped me off, wasn’t any parking close enough. Should be here soon.” She answered.
            “Any guesses on the day, then?”
            “Hopefully soon.” Ruby sighed. “Feels like it’s been forever.”
            “Any word on the gender? I heard Polly might’ve told you.” Tommy recalled.
            “A boy.” She smiled. “Ted and I talked, we decided to name him Alfred. And if Polly’s wrong, then we’ll improvise.”
            Tommy frowned a bit. “Alfred? After his father?”
            “Mhm.”
            “Well, did Thomas ever come up in discussions?” He asked, trying not to sound disappointed.
            Ruby glanced over at her father. “Yes, Teddy mentioned it. But I said we ought to name him Alfred. You’re alive, dad. Teddy’s father isn’t.”
            Tommy had a hard time arguing with that logic. “So, if I die soon, you’ll name the next one after me?”
            Ruby snorted and laughed. “Sure, dad, sure.”
Special Thanks to Charlotte West for writing this post.
As if it wasn’t hard enough to find a college that’s the right fit for your academic and personal interests, you might have additional questions about finding an inclusive campus if you identify as LGBTQ+. You might be wondering about everything from housing options to whether or not you should come out in your personal statement.
A good place to begin is by checking out Campus Pride, a non-profit working to create safer college environments for LGBTQ+ students. They publish the Campus Pride Index, a national list of LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities. They also run the HBCU LGBTQ Clearinghouse, which reviews LGBTQ-inclusive policies, programs, and practices at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The Trans Policy Clearinghouse landing page has a list of resources where you can find which women’s colleges welcome transgender students. You can also see which schools provide options to live in gender-inclusive housing, schools that allow students to change their name and gender on campus records, those that cover transition-related medical expenses under student health insurance, and women’s colleges that welcome transgender students.
Campus Pride also maintains a Shame List, which identifies the “absolute worst campuses for LGBTQ youth” in the United States. The colleges and universities on the Shame List openly discriminate against LGBTQ+ youth or have a track record of anti-LGBTQ+ actions, programs, and practices.
Be sure to also check out an institution’s website and to reach out to college reps if you can’t find answers to your questions. “Perhaps the most helpful question is the direct one,” says Wes Waggoner, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management at Southern Methodist University (SMU). “Ask: ‘What resources and opportunities does this university have that particularly support LGBTQ+ students?’” Waggoner also suggests asking the admissions office to put you in touch with a current student who identifies as LGBTQ+ to ask about life on campus. SMU, for instance, has a resource center and a student senator dedicated to representing LGBTQ students.
Andrew Moe, Associate Dean of Admissions at Swarthmore, agrees. “While students should view an institution’s website and publications to ensure LGBTQ+ students and community are represented and celebrated, they should also ask tough questions,” says Moe. “That’s our job–to answer questions of prospective students and families, so use us as a resource.”
5 TIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ+ WHEN APPLYING TO COLLEGE
The details matter. Check whether university representatives include their pronouns in their email signatures. “If you do a campus visit, look for posters advertising organizations and events oriented towards LGBTQ+ students,” says Kaelie Lund, assistant dean of admissions at Carleton College. “If the school has an office dedicated to supporting queer students, see if it is student-run or if paid staff members oversee that office. That can give you additional insight into how the school you are interested in supports queer students,” she says.
Thoroughly dig through the university’s website, starting with its anti-discrimination statement. “Find out: Does the school’s nondiscrimination policy include sexual orientation and gender identity?” asks Wagonner. “This is a good first check. Does the campus have an active LGBTQ+ student group? Does that group sponsor events for LGBTQ+ students? Is there an LGBTQ+ resource center on campus?”
Ask about housing options and living-learning communities for LGBTQ+ students. Some universities have gender-neutral, gender-inclusive, or all-gender residence halls. University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) has trans-inclusive housing for transgender and gender-nonconforming students. UC Berkeley offers a living-learning community called Unity House welcoming students who identify as LGBTQ+. Residents also take an academic seminar together organized by the Gender Studies Department. Many other universities offer similar options.
Look for scholarships specific to LGBTQ+ students. Campus Pride has a national database of scholarships for LGBTQ+ students. The Point Foundation offers scholarships for community college and university students who identify as LGBTQ+. If your parents are unwilling to support you because of your sexual orientation or gender expression, talk to the financial aid office about what options are available. “I recommend students open a dialogue with admissions and financial aid officers to ensure they know their options if family members are less than supportive,” Moe says.
Whether or not you write about your sexual orientation or gender expression in your college essay is a highly personal decision. You might not be ready to share something so personal, and that’s OK. It can also be a powerful experience to use your personal statement as an opportunity to process and reflect. As is the case for all students, the most helpful essays are ones in which you communicate what is important to you (yup, your values!) and how they will contribute to a campus community. “Students should not feel like they have to talk about their sexual orientation or gender identity in the main essay,” says Waggoner, “but it can be powerful if done well.”
Looking to learn how to come out in your college essay (and whether or not you should)? Check out my blog post here.
Let's talk about FOMO.
FOMO, or the Fear Of Missing Out, is curious. Basically, it refers to "the uneasy and sometimes all-consuming feeling that you're missing out (Times Magazine)." Commonly it is linked to social media, but social media usage is not the only trigger. FOMO was been around for quite awhile (I'm talking centuries), but it has only been seriously studied for the past few decades. Recently, it was studied by scientists at Carleton and McGill University, and researchers hypothesized that it was tied to personality traits. However, they observed that it is felt regardless of temperament. In a follow-up study done by the same group, the following situation was considered by the participants: the person had a planned activity that was fun, but they were aware of an alternative activity; they were later reminded of the alternative by social media or a friend. The research found that 1) regardless of how the participants were reminded of the alternative, they experienced FOMO, and 2) it didn't matter how the participants felt about the alternative activity. The FOMO was still present. For more information on both studies, and most of what I've said so far, look here.
There are some proposed methods to reduce FOMO, but science hasn't really found a way to remove it yet. According to behavioral scientist Nick Hobson Ph.D., FOMO seems to reduce with age. Until then, here are some ideas that various sources have suggested:
- Attentional control: try to not think about what you are missing out on. That sounds ridiculous and a little condescending, but there is logic behind it. Sometimes it can really help to just refocus on what you have instead of what you don't.
- Unplug for a bit: Get off of social media for awhile, or limit your time on them. If you aren't constantly bombarded by the experiences you aren't having, you can focus on what you are doing. This isn't going to help everyone. In fact, some research shows it might encourage FOMO in some people. So if it makes your FOMO worse, please try a different method.
- Journal: Instead of rushing to share all your daily experiences with the world, consider putting them in a private journal. This can help refocus on why you do things-- your own growth and enjoyment.
- Connect to people: Okay, maybe not the most convenient suggestion at the time, but it helps me a lot. Hanging out with people, being the focus of someone's attention, can help you focus on the value of yourself and your personal journey.
The most important things that I can leave you with are these: you are not alone, and FOMO isn't your fault. Many, many people of all ages experience it, and it affects everyone differently. It is not only the product of comparison, and it isn't the inability to make your own joy.
If you find that FOMO is affecting your ability to enjoy your day to day life, consider talking to a friend or professional about your situation.
For more tips, I recommend the AADA website. They have some amazing advice!
I hope this has been helpful, and that you find some new insight into FOMO ✨
My friend has no idea I'm posting this, but I'm very scared for her safety and well-being so I'm sharing here since I have a larger following on here.
My friend Tatjana, a Canadian citizen, is currently stuck in South Korea and is not being permitted to leave. She was teaching at an international school but has since lost her job after some legal issues. The authorities are not allowing her to leave to country, but she cannot afford a lawyer (not to mention a lawyer in both Canada and South Korea).
I know times are hard for everyone, but please consider sharing ❤️ We just want to bring her home
This week I decided to do a little research about the fomo phenomenon. Fomo is an acronym for the “fear of missing out”. I think fomo has definitely been heightened as social media use becomes more and more prevalent and it is safe to say we have all felt it at some point in time. Scientists at Carleton and McGill University studied the social psychological basis of fomo and predicted it would be related to a host of negative effects including stress and negative emotion. They found their predictions to be true and to be accompanied by other negative effects such as fatigue, sleep problems and psychosomatic symptoms.
I then decided to look into ways to combat the feeling of fomo. Here are a few of the tips I found to be most helpful for me:
1) Realize that you might not actually be missing out. I think especially after watching the Fire Festival documentaries on Hulu and Netflix, this is an important tip to keep in mind. We saw in the documentaries that not everything is actually what it seems on social media, and we have to remember to keep things in perspective.
2) Don’t be so hard on yourself for staying in. While staying in might not always be the best option, sometimes it is. Going out frequently can eat away at your bank account quickly and cause more fatigue. Therefore, it is okay to take a night off to prioritize self care and relax on the couch every so often.
3) Consider if you are the cause of your own fomo. As discussed above, staying in is not always a bad thing, however, if you find yourself constantly saying no to plans when you have nothing going on, you might be doing it to yourself. Staying in is always the easiest decision because it doesn’t require any communication, money, or preparation. However, if you find yourself constantly experiencing the negative effects of fomo, it is most likely worth putting in the work to make plans and actually committing to them.
4) Learn to be okay with not being able to do it all. I think this is one of the biggest lessons I have learned during my time in college. Being a full-time student can be extremely stressful and demanding especially once you consider work and other obligations as well. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that it is impossible to be able to do everything all the time. If you stayed in to get work done or to be ready for work/class the following morning, remind yourself that you are working hard to be successful and that is more important and rewarding than one night out.
Résumé-Writing Tips to Help You Get Past the A.I. Gatekeepers It was inevitable: When companies made it simple to apply for a job online, applications poured in. To wade through this ever-rising tide of résumés, human resources departments are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence systems to pluck out the candidates deemed to be good fits. So while applying may be as easy as a mouse click, that résumé is much more likely to be screened out into oblivion than end up in front of a recruiter. To avoid getting caught by the résumé sifter, job seekers should understand the new systems, which have been spreading to more industries and positions. How it works So-called predictive hiring tools evaluate résumés by finding keywords related to categories like skills, experience and education, and weighting them according to the job requirements and any other factors the hiring company has specified. The system may weight applicants who have worked at certain companies more positively. It may infer how old a skill seems to be from where it appears in a job history. Artificial intelligence is used to understand what people mean to say — for example, if Carleton is a person’s name, an alma mater or a company the applicant worked for. The software systems can be less biased than human screeners because they can be programmed to ignore characteristics like age, sex, race and other protected categories. Giving yourself the best shot Making it through the automated screening can require tailoring your résumé, not just the cover letter, to each job you are applying for. Greg Moran, chief executive of OutMatch, a system that screens more than 10 million applicants a year for companies including Pepsi, Toyota and Walmart, confirmed that the following actions would help applicants avoid an automated rejection. Include in your résumé the same keywords, or similar ones, that the job posting uses for the knowledge, skills, experience and duties involved. Use the most relevant keywords in your most recent job listed. If you mention data analytics in a job 10 years ago but not in more recent work, the algorithm may give it less weight. Words like “significant,” “strong” and “mastery” in a job description can be clues that those skills will be weighted heavily, so they should be emphasized in your résumé and included on your descriptions of your more current experience. Quantify wherever possible. “Managed a team of five that increased sales by 40 percent over two years” works better than “Managed a team that significantly increased sales.” Make sure the system can “read” your résumé. In some systems, the PDF file format can make your résumé appear as a single image, so Microsoft Word may be a better choice. Fancy formatting like columns or added images can be less readable if the system is scanning left to right. Don’t try to trick the software with keywords in white text — the creators have already thought of that. Mention all your skills. The system may scan for specific experience with, for example, the programming language R or Tableau, so don’t lump them together as “experienced in data analytics.” If you are part of an underrepresented group, use terms that will let the system identify you to companies that are trying to diversify their work force. Pitfalls The artificial intelligence used by hiring systems can generate unintended harmful consequences, said Hong Qu, a race and technology fellow at Stanford. He is a creator of AI Blindspot, a set of practices that help software development teams recognize unconscious biases and structural inequalities that could affect their software’s decision-making. “The systems can still have their own forms of biases and may screen out qualified applicants,” Mr. Qu said. A company may put a priority on the résumés of software engineer applicants who went to the same universities as successful senior engineers in the industry. Applicants from women’s or historically Black colleges may be more likely to be rejected, for example, if the upper ranks of engineers in an industry are predominantly white men. “Getting the system right is more than debugging code and de-biasing training data, because the software is based on values-driven decisions with historical baggage,” Mr. Qu said. Biases engendered by the system can extend beyond screening. For example, recruiters can be subject to “automation bias,” giving an analysis more weight because it came from a computer system. Pooling candidates who have all made it through the screening for their next level of evaluation, rather than ranking them by scores bestowed by the software, can help alleviate this effect. Frequent audits are needed to understand whom the system is screening in — and out. It also needs to be designed with transparency, so humans can understand why any individual decision was made. An opaque system makes it hard to discover problems, Mr. Qu said. While the systems are becoming more widespread, they are nascent, and critics say there is little market incentive or government regulation demanding transparency. In fact, self-examination can unearth problems that may harm a company’s reputation. More than your résumé Increasingly, the one-click résumé drop-off is just the first step. More candidates are being asked to take skill and personality assessments and record answers to interview questions. OutMatch’s Mr. Moran said the additional tasks aimed to give a more complete picture to hiring managers and let applicants “tell their story.” Still, most applicants who are asked to submit extra information won’t have the chance to tell that story to a human. While percentages vary, Mr. Moran estimated that a system might typically deem 80 percent of candidates who submitted a résumé for an entry-level professional job to have the basic skills and competency to succeed in the role, leading them to be asked to complete one or more tests. Most test takers will then be asked to record a video interview. The information from the résumé, the tests and a transcript of the interview will be reviewed by artificial intelligence software. About 20 percent of those candidates will then speak to a recruiter. Asking more job seekers to do interviews does allow more candidates to demonstrate their suitability, said Michele Olivier, a career coach in Austin, Texas, but “it also means that there’s a bigger time commitment required at an earlier stage for more roles.” Previously, candidates who made it to the interview stage might have a one in 10 chance of getting the job, she said. Now, “with the new tools you may have the same time requirement” for a much slimmer chance. “Employers aren’t doing a good job of being mindful of how much they are expecting from candidates,” Ms. Olivier said. Karin Borchert the chief executive of the hiring software company Modern Hire, predicts resumes will become less important for entry-level professional jobs. Companies can evaluate qualities they are seeking, such as tenacity or problem-solving skills, through assessments and then incorporate feedback on new hires to improve those assessments, she said. Don’t neglect your other tools Mr. Moran cautioned applicants not to rely on the new systems alone to secure a job. He advises job seekers to make sure their LinkedIn profile is up to date and includes recommendations from managers and colleagues. Twitter or other public social media accounts should include “digital bread crumbs” of information highlighting skills, experience and interests. Candidates should also seek out people inside their target companies that can refer them for the position, Mr. Moran said, because those referrals can significantly lift the chance of being hired. “The more technical things get, the more you can get noticed by going old school,” he said. Venus was once more Earth-like, but climate change made it uninhabitable
An artist's rendering of the floor of Venus. (Shutterstock)
We are able to study quite a bit about local weather change from Venus, our sister planet. Venus at present has a floor temperature of 450 C (the temperature of an oven’s self-cleaning cycle) and an environment dominated by carbon dioxide (96 per cent) with a density 90 instances that of Earth’s.
Venus is a really unusual place, completely uninhabitable, besides maybe within the clouds some 60 kilometres up the place the current discovery of phosphine could counsel floating microbial life. However the floor is completely inhospitable.
Nonetheless, Venus as soon as possible had an Earth-like local weather. In line with current local weather modelling, for a lot of its historical past Venus had floor temperatures much like current day Earth. It possible additionally had oceans, rain, maybe snow, possibly continents and plate tectonics, and much more speculatively, maybe even floor life.
Lower than one billion years in the past, the local weather dramatically modified resulting from a runaway greenhouse impact. It may be speculated that an intensive interval of volcanism pumped sufficient carbon dioxide into the ambiance to trigger this nice local weather change occasion that evaporated the oceans and brought on the tip of the water cycle.
Proof of change
This speculation from the local weather modellers impressed Sara Khawja, a grasp’s pupil in my group (co-supervised with geoscientist Claire Samson), to search for proof in Venusian rocks for this proposed climatic change occasion.
For the reason that early 1990s, my Carleton College analysis group — and extra just lately my Siberian group at Tomsk State College — have been mapping and deciphering the geological and tectonic historical past of Earth’s exceptional sister planet.
Soviet Venera and Vega missions of the 1970s and 1980s did land on Venus and take footage and evaluated the composition of the rocks, earlier than the landers failed because of the excessive temperature and strain. Nonetheless, our most complete view of the floor of Venus has been supplied by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft within the early 1990s, which used radar to see by means of the dense cloud layer and produce detailed photos of greater than 98 per cent of Venus’s floor.
A visualization of Venus’s floor produced by radar on board the Magellan spacecraft.
Historic rocks
Our seek for geological proof of the good local weather change occasion led us to deal with the oldest sort of rocks on Venus, known as tesserae, which have a fancy look suggestive of an extended, difficult geological historical past. We thought that these oldest rocks had the most effective probability of preserving proof of water erosion, which is a such an vital course of on Earth and will have occurred on Venus previous to the good local weather change occasion.
Given poor decision altitude information, we used an oblique approach to attempt to acknowledge historic river valleys. We demonstrated that youthful lava flows from the encompassing volcanic plains had stuffed valleys within the margins of tesserae.
To our astonishment these tesserae valley patterns have been similar to river move patterns on Earth, resulting in our suggestion that these tesserae valleys have been fashioned by river erosion throughout a time with Earth-like weather conditions. My Venus analysis teams at Carleton and Tomsk State universities are learning the post-tesserae lava flows for any geological proof of the transition to extraordinarily sizzling circumstances.
Tumblr media
A portion of Alpha Regio, a topographic upland on the floor of Venus, was the primary function on Venus to be recognized from Earth-based radar. (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA)
Earth analogies
With a view to perceive how volcanism on Venus might produce such a change in local weather, we are able to look to Earth historical past for analogues. We are able to discover analogies in super-eruptions just like the final eruption at Yellowstone that occurred 630,000 years.
However such volcanism is small in comparison with massive igneous provinces (LIPs) that happen roughly each 20-30 million years. These eruption occasions can launch sufficient carbon dioxide to trigger catastrophic local weather change on Earth, together with mass extinctions. To provide you a way of scale, contemplate that the smallest LIPs produce sufficient magma to cowl all of Canada to a depth of about 10 metres. The most important recognized LIP produced sufficient magma that will have lined an space the scale of Canada to a depth of practically eight kilometres.
The LIP analogues on Venus embody particular person volcanoes which are as much as 500 kilometres throughout, in depth lava channels that attain as much as 7,000 kilometres lengthy, and there are additionally related rift programs — the place the crust is pulling aside — as much as 10,000 kilometres lengthy.
If LIP-style volcanism was the reason for the good local weather change occasion on Venus, then might comparable local weather change occur on Earth? We are able to think about a situation many tens of millions of years sooner or later when a number of LIPs randomly occurring on the identical time might trigger Earth to have such runaway local weather change resulting in circumstances like present-day Venus.
Don't panic buy, find a side hustle and other tips to ride out the 2nd wave
With Ottawa struggling to break records with its daily COVID-19 counts and public health officials advising of an impending second peak, some of us may still be haunted with flashbacks of empty shelves, long lineups and job insecurity. Now, more than six months into the experience of the pandemic, some experts say it is time to concentrate on what is ahead now, and they offer tips on what you should and must not do this time around.
In local stores, the second wave won't look like the first: toilet paper, flour and yeast shortages are a thing of the past, said food security expert Sylvain Charlebois. Charlebois also said food producers and distributors are far better positioned than they were back in March, when people rushed out to grocery stores not knowing when they'll be back.
Now, he said, grocery stores are the ones stockpiling consumers. Charlebois, who is also the director of Dalhousie University's Agri-food Analytics Lab, said his lab looked at wasted food at the start of the pandemic.
He said it was difficult to get groceries delivered to homes within a couple of weeks even before pandemic. But if Ottawa goes into a second lockdown, Charlebois said, the effects really aren't likely to be as harsh.
As evidence, he pointed to the new lockdown measures as restaurants close to customers dining in parts of Quebec. So your food supply is safe, but until 2022, said Jeff Donaldson, a Carleton PhD candidate with a specialty in emergency preparedness, you're probably looking at other inconveniences to your 'usual' routine.
Because certain industries are also at risk of being shut down again and some could never recover, Donaldson said the primary and secondary income sources of people might be cut off. And that's a "dangerous and precarious" position and "you're hoping to fail," he said, if you're planning on leaning on government emergency benefits.
Instead, Donaldson suggests searching within your household for creative ways to earn multiple lines of income. Do some knitting or renovating some old furniture, Donaldson suggests, and sell it.
Then if you're making an extra 150 dollars a month? Donaldson, who runs an emergency preparedness company, said people should have prescriptions and medical supplies "many, many days of stockpiles," and to create a household emergency plan for this winter.
Finally, for the sake of their own mental health, people should make it easier on themselves. According to Milyavskaya, people should strive for two things during the second wave: to maintain a sense of connection with everyone, and to maintain a feeling of control over your own life.
During the first wave, she told us to reflect back on what went wrong or right, and make a plan by asking yourself what you need to get around, and how you can build more support. Try cross-country skiing, learn a new language, learn a new tool, and schedule your social circle for many Facetime or Zoom chats, he said.
