Like 2021, 2022 was a year that was full of extraordinary recordings. In part, it is Bandcamp that has given a new lease on life to independent records, somewhat obviating the hegemony of paltry stream income. Touring, on the other hand, is costing far too much, resulting in a group as big as Animal Collective canceling a tour, pleading finances. When major labels are starting to ask for a percentage of the gate, one can see the numbers crunching into nonviability. In the meantime, instead of masking and risking shows, I enjoyed the following 22 recordings (and many more).

A college radio DJ reviews some of the hidden gems of underground alternative rock released this year.

1. Sophia Bel - Anxious Avoidant

Michigan-born Québécoise artist Sophia Bel released her debut album this year, Anxious Avoidant, which showcases her soft and emotional vocals over a genre-spanning folk-rock landscape. Focusing on the themes of love, attachment, and the desire for connection amidst the difficult circumstances of a pandemic-afflicted world, Bel's intricate lyrics evoke the intimacy of a diary entry yet maintain a professional level of polish. From the spacey, synth-heavy hit “You're Not Real You're Just A Ghost” to the softer, folk-influenced ballad “I Won't Bite,” every track on this album has something a little different to offer its listeners. With its candid, youthful approach to the weighty topics of love and missed connections, Bel is able to deliver a mature and emotional story in a colorful, radio-friendly package.

2. SASAMI - Squeeze

An artist of many talents, Los Angeles-based SASAMI presents us with an intense yet beautiful collection of songs on Squeeze. Released earlier this year, SASAMI’s sophomore album draws inspiration from softer folk sounds while incorporating the heaviness of metal and hard rock. Capturing the power and brooding darkness of the nu-metal genre while maintaining a faithfulness to the melodic and narrative elements of country, Squeeze fuses these genres in unexpected and beautiful ways. From the power ballad “The Greatest” to the lamenting, chaotic “Sorry Entertainer,” SASAMI showcases her range of expression on this brilliant release.

3. Yumi Zouma - Present Tense

New Zealand-based collaborative project Yumi Zouma has released their seventh album, Present Tense, this year. Embodying their dreamy, shoegaze-inspired sound, this album is easy for new listeners to approach. From the catchy, hopeful track “In The Eyes of Our Love” to the softer and more dissonant “Astral Projection,” there is a delicate and pensive rhythm that runs throughout this album. Fans of their previous instrumentals will not be disappointed, as Yumi Zouma consistently delivers the dreamy sound they have become well-known for. The evolution of their music is evident in the experimental direction of some of their new tracks, as in the simplicity of “Razorblade” and the beautifully layered “If I Had the Heart for Chasing.”

4. Momma - Household Name

The Los Angeles rock outfit Momma returns triumphantly on the album Household Name. Drawing clear influence from 90's rock, this album delivers catchy and driving garage rock sounds with underlying poppy, upbeat melodies. The hit “Medicine” shows off the band's capacity to craft grooving, memorable riffs, while the more confessional “Rockstar” is vulnerable yet empowering in its lyrics about the beginning stages of forming a band. The album also slows into more tender, introspective tracks like “Brave” and “Rip Off.” Equal parts melodic and brash, this album brilliantly touches on the moodiness of decades past without losing its originality. 

5. Carla Geneve - Learn to Like It

Carla Geneve, who hails from Western Australia, brings us some of the most beautifully crafted lyricism of the year on her debut full-length album Learn to Like It. Weaving an intricate narrative from start to finish, each track immerses us in the gritty depths of our emotions while delivering a consistently clean folk-inspired sound. Some of the tracks, such as the high-energy “Dog Eared,” opt for the use of grungier electric guitar, while the softer ballad “The Right Reasons” sounds acoustically raw and real. The album thoughtfully explores themes of isolation, self-discovery and the desire for connections, which figure prominently on tracks like “Brisbane” and “Brighter than Blue.”

roommate eren sees all the barbenheimer posts and tells y/n that they should go. y/n gets so excited to go that she dresses in a nice sparkly pink dress and begrudgingly (totally not, he's so excited) dresses up as ken with her! eren is suddenly thanking miss greta gerwig herself for creating a movie that makes you dress up like this. eren cries throughout the movie, totally holds readers hand during america ferrera's iconic monologue and totally sobs during the woman montage because it reminds him of you, and carla, and his sweet goddaughter sophia. (he's also buying her a thousand barbies after the movie is over and taking sophia AND carla to see it) he totally drinks respect women juice on the daily so eren and y/n have a long talk about feminism, the patriarchy, what it's like to be a woman and its so wildly wholesome that it makes eren love YOU more and you love eren MORE because he's a totally supportive and loving partner. eren also unironically keeps saying "I am kenough" after

method acting eren will be playing a ken in the movie. not ryan gosling or even simu liu ken, totally a background ken. same for y/n, she's totally a barbie as well - maybe the nobel prize physics barbie cuz she's my personal favorite. ive thought about different roles that my characters in method acting would play (like how i totally canonically in my story made levi and hange the actors of la la land) and I have always thought that historia would be perfect for sterotypical/margot robbie barbie. eren's totally the cast member after the movie talking about the role he has as a man in the industry and how he was lucky to be in this film because he really wanted to uplift womens voices. eren and y/n wear matching barbie outfits to the premiere and are super duper cute on the red carpet (when are they not, this is a power couple your honor) somehow, eren's ken becomes a meme ken and he becomes a very famous reaction image.

Carla wasn't exactly sure why she said yes to doing the kayak race with Sophia considering just how much she sucked at it. But then again, she hadn't seen her friend in a while and she didn't want to break her heart by saying no. All she could hope for was that Sophia wasn't here to win this thing - if so, she was definitely setting herself up for failure with Carla as her kayaking mate. "Are you sure you want to do this with me? You know how much I suck at this," she reminded her friend as they made their way slowly towards the lake where people were gathering slowly for the race.

Pour information, je vais reprendre petit à petit les suggestions de faceclaim pour des avatars qui m'ont été faite fin août ! J'ai été pris dans l'inspiration de l'écriture sur rpg (ça faisait longtemps dooonc j'en ai profité) + le boulot qui m'a un peu roulé dessus mais je retrouve l'envie et le temps de grapher par ici 🌈

“Surely you can’t count Sophia like that? She’s happily married with her second child on the way.” He reaches for a slice of lemon cake from the silver tray set between them. It’s Christopher’s favorite. Eddie doesn’t like to keep many overly sweet things in their kitchen, but he does always swipe a little something when he’s forced to visit the family home.

“Right,” he continues when no one answers. “So, other than being invited under the ruse of tea and good company, what is this about?”

With the tea finally set out, Sophia takes her place on a sofa closest to Eddie and Adri, opposite their mother.

“Have you received your invitation to the Grant-Nash ball?” Helena asks, as though wondering if he’s seen the latest opera.

“Have I- really? You wanted me here to find out whether I got an invitation to the first ball of the season? This could have been a correspondence. A note. A meeting between staff.”

Even with all he knows of his mother’s meddling, her questioning him face to face seems a bit of a stretch, only serving to set him further on edge.

“You would have ignored it. You often do. Am I wrong?”

She does have a point.

“Mother, why don’t we skip the games and roundabout talk? Just tell me which ladies you have in mind for me to marry, and will make the perfect wife and maternal figure, so I may avoid them and choose anyone else.”

“Edmundo, if your father—“

“Don’t,” he warns. “Do not even think of bringing him into this. Do not pretend either of you cared for Shannon or that you never blamed her for Christopher’s illness. For any problems she and I had, she was still my wife, and mother to my son. My beautiful, brilliant, perfect son. Christopher and I are thriving despite whatever you may think. Am I clear?”

Helena visibly stiffens on her cushion, taking a lengthy sip from her tea before she answers. “Yes, Edmundo. Quite. The fact remains that you and that—”

“Carla,” he interjects.

“Carla, of course. That you and her are not enough for your son’s proper upbringing. This will not go away and you will find a match this season. Now, am I clear?”

“Crystal,” Eddie grits out between clenched teeth, standing so quickly he feels dizzy from it. Still he manages to give each of his sisters a kiss goodbye and take the slice of cake. “Good day, Sophia. Adri.” After a moment he bows his head and curtly adds “Mother.”

This months #millionsmissingflowers is a pattern inspired by Campanula patula and Moneses uniflora which are both endangered in the UK.

This pattern was created in honour of two severe ME patients Millie and Carla who are both currently in hospital struggling to get the treatment they need.

This lack of appropriate treatment is due to the stigmatisation of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis over decades. Medical professionals receive very little education on ME and often what they receive can be incorrect. The NICE guidelines on ME were updated recently which outlines how to care for severe ME patients in hospital but Drs don’t have to follow them and are choosing not to.

Unfortunately there is a precedent of Severe ME patients not receiving appropriate medical care and often being harmed instead which has lead to the deaths of Sophia Mirza, Merryn Crofts and Maeve Boothby.
