Back to the Future: The Real Johnny B. Goode Rocked Long Before Marty McFly
https://ift.tt/2QFxici
Back to the Future is a classic comedy, one of the most popular films in motion picture history. Almost every laugh line lands with a perfectly executed punch. Every skateboard flip is a motion picture wonder. It’s one of those films which is broadly silly yet still has heart, and it’s a treasure of commercial cinema. But when Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly straps on a cherry red Gibson ES-345 he plunders the golden oldies right out of the fingers of the true original. Ignore the bit where “Marvin Berry” calls his cousin on the phone. Chuck Berry didn’t just write “Johnny B. Goode,” he was Johnny B. Goode.
The song about the country boy who could play guitar like ringing a bell could have referred to any number of musicians, from Buddy Holly to Bo Diddley or Ricky Nelson. But the singer-songwriting guitarist who penned the line was born at 2520 Goode Avenue, in St. Louis.
Berry had already made his concession to white commercialism by changing the line “that little colored boy could play” to “that little country boy.” Oh my. But then for years, the Father of Rock and Roll watched the self-styled King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, put his stamp on Berry’s signature. The royalties were sweet though for Berry, and the respect was mutual.
But the backhanded homage in the time-traveling 1985 comedy is really a cheap gag, and the joke is at the expense of Berry’s legacy.
“Long Distance information? Get Me Memphis, Tennesse”
“Chuck! Chuck, it’s Marvin, your cousin, Marvin Berry. You know that new sound you’re looking for?” the fictional bandleader yells into a pay phone at the 1955 Enchantment Under the Sea dance in Hill Valley, California. “Listen to this!”
We then hear the subtle sound of casual racial invalidation. Not only does the line denigrate Berry’s contribution to the architecture of rock and roll; it completely sidelines guitarist Carl Hogan who initiated the opening guitar phrasing on Louis Jordan’s 1946 pre-rock and roll song “Ain’t That Just Like a Woman.” Think, McFly. Think!
Michael J. Fox already has a perfectly winning comic ending to the now-iconic scene: when his fingers stretch back to the future, and he channels Eddie Van Halen on the guitar, even the kids at the 1950s dance think he should act his age. So why does director and co-screenwriter Robert Zemeckis feel the need to shit on Chuck Berry with such a disposable throw-away gag? It is even more insulting when you take into consideration who Berry had to sue over the course of his career for stealing his riffs.
Indicative of a long-standing music industry tradition, the two biggest names in white rock and roll, the Beatles and the Beach Boys, had to cough up to the pioneering artist after infringing on his copyrights. Berry sued to get his name on the Beach Boys’ hit “Surfin’ USA” while John Lennon agreed to cover two songs owned by Berry’s publisher in exchange for copping lines from “You Can’t Catch Me” for the song “Come Together.”
But Lennon still declared “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry,’” when he introduced him on The Mike Douglas Show in 1972. “In the 1950s, a whole generation worshipped his music, and when you see him today, past and present all come together, and the message is Hail, Hail Rock and Roll.’”
He Could Play a Guitar Just Like a-Ringin’ a Bell
Berry was the first-ever Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and in the same class as James Brown, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Presley. With songs like “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Little Queenie,” “Havana Moon,” “Wee Wee Hours,” “Rock and Roll Music,” and “Sweet Little 16,” Berry scored the soundtrack to the 1950s.
Berry didn’t invent rock and roll. Ike Turner is credited with that for his 1951 song, “Rocket 88.”  Berry recorded his first hit “Maybellene” in 1955 at Chicago’s Chess Studios, the home of the blues. Berry sped up the blues to a country thump and let his fingers do to guitar strings what lips did to horns.
Berry made rock and roll fun, funny, and subtly rebellious. The teenager in “You Can’t Catch Me” is motorvating away from the cops. His “Brown Eyed Handsome Man” hit a home run with color coded racial pride. The artist who was glad, so glad, he was “living in the U.S.A.” (in the song “Back in the U.S.A.”) was barred from many of the things he found so wondrous in this country to sing about.
Almost Grown
Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born on Oct. 18, 1926. His St. Louis neighborhood, “The Ville,” was segregated. His great-grandparents were slaves. In 1944, Berry was arrested for driving along in an automobile he carjacked at gunpoint after robbing three stores in Kansas City. He did a three-year stint in reform school.
Berry began playing music professionally when he was in his mid-20s, sitting in with local bands like piano player Johnnie Johnson’s group, Sir John’s Trio. Blues icon Muddy Waters suggested Berry bring his songs to Chess Records where Howlin’ Wolf, the Moonglows, and Big Bill Broonzy were recording sides. Label owner Leonard Chess had a good feeling about the song “Ida Red.”

Berry renamed the song “Maybellene” when he recorded it on May 21, 1955. It was Berry’s first nationwide hit. He was 28. Willie Dixon was on bass, Johnnie Johnson played piano, Jerome Green shook maracas, and Ebby Hardy beat the drums. Alan Freed and Russ Fratto didn’t do anything for the song, but their names are on the credits as co-songwriters. They effectively collected royalties for teaching Berry a valuable lesson.
Chuck Berry wrote all the songs on his first album, After School Session, which was released in May 1957. It was the same for his next two albums. Berry didn’t include any covers on his albums at all until his fourth album, Rockin’ at the Hops, released in July 1960. Berry starred in some of Alan Freed’s jukebox movies like Rock Rock Rock!, Mister Rock and Roll, and Go, Johnny, Go! He also appeared in Jazz on a Summer’s Day, a 1959 documentary about the Newport Jazz Festival.
“No Need to Be Complainin’, My Objections Overruled”
Berry was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, in December 1959 for transporting Janice Norine Escalan, a 14-year-old hatcheck girl at Club Bandstand in Juarez, Mexico, across state lines for “immoral purposes.”  He was charged under the Mann Act. Berry argued he was offering legitimate employment. An all-male, all-white jury found him guilty on March 11, 1960. Berry appealed, but the conviction was upheld at a 1961 trial. Berry was sentenced to three years. He served 18 months and was released from prison in 1964.
Berry’s career never quite took off again. He had some hits in 1964 and 1965, “Nadine,” “No Particular Place to Go,” “You Never Can Tell,” and “Promised Land.” He was one of the artists in the 1964 concert film The TAMI Show. Berry’s last number 1 hit, “My Ding-a-Ling,” was recorded live in London in 1972 for The London Chuck Berry Sessions album.
Berry never stopped playing live. He traveled with only his guitar and a briefcase for his money, and would grab local bar bands to back him when he hit town. Everyone knew Chuck Berry songs. Simple, three-chord pangs to teenage love, cars and safety belts. Bandleaders like Bruce Springsteen and Steve Miller eagerly lent their fingers and bands to the light traveling guitar player. Most groups were thrilled to get the chance to play for a legend when they weren’t harangued for bending a string too far on an intro. Not even Keith Richards got away with that, just watch the rehearsal portion of the 1987 documentary Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The Rolling Stones’ guitarist had already been brought in as a surprise backing player for a 1972 Los Angeles show where he was kicked off the stage for setting his amp too loud. Berry would also give Richards a black eye for touching his guitar after a New York City show a decade later. Richards’ early guitar work is modeled on Berry’s style. The Stones covered “Carol,” “Around and Around” and “You Can’t Catch Me.” Richards inducted Berry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
Back to the Future is really just a light, inoffensive, time-bending screwball comedy, and Berry has been the butt of far worse jokes. Spy magazine alleged Berry secretly filmed women in bathrooms. In January 1990, High Society claimed to be “the only magazine with the balls to show Chuck’s berries,” when it published photos of him posing nude with different women.
So when you read an article about Berry recalling the incident where the white kid played “Johnny B. Goode,” remember: it ran in The Onion. Chuck Berry could be accused of a lot of things, but he was an original.

"ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO" (1940) Review
Tumblr media
"ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO" (1940) Review Whenever one conjured the image of Warner Brothers Studio during the 1930s and 40s, hard-hitting crime dramas or social commentaries come to mind. I would certainly not view melodramas - costumed or otherwise - as part of the studio's usual repertoire. Then in 1933, Hal Wallis became the studio's new production chief and eventually allowed the studio to release more films with a wider variety. And when Bette Davis became "Queen of the Lot" in the mid-to-late 1930s, the release of melodramas by Warner Brothers became more common.
One of the melodramas associated with Davis was "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO", the 1940 movie adaptation of Rachel Fields' 1938 novel. Set in France and northeastern United States during the mid-to-late 1840s, the movie told the story of a newly hired French schoolteacher at an American school, who finds herself reliving her past experiences with a French aristocratic family to her new students gossiping over the scandal that had followed her across the Atlantic. The movie begins in 1848 United States. Mademoiselle Henriette Deluzy-Desportes has been hired as the new French instructor at a girls' school. To her dismay, she discovers that her new students are aware of the scandal that drove her out of France. Instead of resigning from the school, she decides to tell her students about her experiences with the family of the Duc de Praslin and Duchesse de Praslin. The movie jumps back to 1846, during the last years of the Orleans monarchy, when Henriette arrives in France, following a five-year stint as a governess for an English family. After an interview with the Duc and Duchesse, Henriette is hired to act as governess for their three daughters and son. Although Henriette endears herself to the Duc and his four children, the Duchesse seemed to resent her presence. Due to an erratic temperament and an all compassing love for her husband, the Duchesse begins to suspect that Henriette is not only stealing the love of her children, but more importantly her husband. Despite her happy relationship with the de Praslin children, Henriette is forced to deal with the Duchesse' increasingly hostile behavior, a growing awareness of the Duc's feelings for her . . . and her own feelings for him. The tensions within the family culminates in the Duchesse's brutal death, which leads to a great deal of legal problems for Henriette. "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO" proved to be a successful film, but not quite a major box office hit. I read somewhere that some at the Warner Brothers Studios blamed the movie's elaborate production designs for overwhelming the other aspects of the movie. I do not know if I could agree with this assessment. Granted, I found some of Carl Jules Weyl's art designs of 1840s France a bit grandiose - especially in scenes featuring the de Praslin household. But considering the high level of melodrama and characterization, I find this opinion a bit hard to accept. I also find it difficult to agree with this slightly negative opinion of the movie's visual style. Personally, I rather enjoyed it. I thought Weyl and his staff did an excellent job in re-creating the movie's period - 1846 to 1848 via production designs, set designs, Warren Low's editing and especially Ernest Haller's Oscar nominated cinematography. I also have to compliment Orry-Kelly's costume designs. The Australian-born designer had also created the costumes for some of Bette Davis' movie, including 1938's "JEZEBEL" and 1939's "JUAREZ". The designer could have easily been sloppy and re-use the costumes from those particular movies. Instead, Orry-Kelly created costumes that more or less accurately reflected the fashions of the mid-to-late 1840s. While reading another review of "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO", the writer complained that he/she found it difficult to believe that a forbidden romance between a French aristocrat and his governess led to the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848 and the fall of the July Monarchy in France. Apparently, the reviewer had failed to do any research or read Rachel Field's novel. AFter all, the novel was based upon history, including Field's family background. Henriette Deluzy-Desportes (or what was her real name) was one of Field's ancestors. And from what I have read, the real scandal that surrounded the governess and the duke had a major impact on the 1848 revolution that broke out in France. But was the movie's historical background completely accurate? I honestly do not know. I would have to read more on the 1848 Revolution in France and the life of the Duc de Praslin. If I have one complaint about the movie's handling of this historical background, I do wish that Casey Robinson's screenplay could have provided more hints about the upcoming political upheaval. Overall, I really enjoyed "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO". It is rare to come across a first-rate costume melodrama that can keep me enthralled during its entire running time. And this movie managed to achieve this, thanks to not only Robinson's screenplay, but also Anatole Litvak's steady direction. This was especially apparent in the first two-thirds of the movie that chronicled Henriette's troubles with her American students, her arrival in France and her working and personal relationships with the de Praslin family. The movie's best segment centered around the months she spent in the de Praslin family's employment. Once, Henriette is dismissed by the Duchesse de Praslin for imagined slights, the movie struggled to maintain its momentum. This last third of the film centered on Henriette's attempts to retrieve a reference from the Duchesse, the latter's violent death, the legal wranglings that surrounded the murder and the finale in the United States. And yet . . . this last third of the film dragged so much - especially the period in which Henriette was in prison - that it threatened to overshadow my enjoyment of the film. Aside from one particular performance, I have no problems with the movie's cast. Bette Davis gave an engrossing and subtle performance as the movie's lead character, Henriette Deluzy-Desportes. I will admit there were times I found the character a bit ideal for my liking - especially in the scenes featuring the governess and her charges. But the scenes featuring the growing love between Henriette and the Duc de Praslin and her conflicts with the Duchesse allowed Davis to superbly portray the governess more as a human being and less as a figure of feminine ideal. Charles Boyer was superb as the Duc de Praslin, a practical and loving man who found himself trapped in a marriage with a woman he no longer love. I feel it is to his credit that he could make the audience feel sympathetic toward a man who not only harbored adulterous feelings for another woman, but also murdered his wife. The movie also featured fine performances from a supporting cast that included Jeffrey Lynn as Henriette's future husband, the Reverend Henry Field; Harry Davenport as the de Praslin groundskeeper Pierre; Montagu Love as the Duc de Praslin's father-in-law, Marshal Horace François Bastien Sébastiani de la Porta; and Henry Daniell as Monsieur Broussais, the man charged with investigating the Duchesse's murder. "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO" also benefited from excellent performances from the child actors who portrayed Henriette's charges. I was especially impressed by June Lockhart and Virginia Weidler, who portrayed the Duc and Duchesse's two older offsprings. The only performance I had trouble with Barbara O'Neil's portrayal of Frances, the Duchesse du Praslin. I realize the latter was supposed to be an emotional and possessive woman, whose selfishness left her family out in the cold. O'Neil was fine in those scenes in which she conveyed the Duchesse's coldness and attempts at indifference toward Henriette. Otherwise, her shrill rants and emotional outbursts struck me as hammy. I am surprised that O'Neil was the only cast member to earn an Academy Award nomination for acting. I cannot say that I agree with the old criticism of the production designs for "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO". I believe the movie does suffer from some flaws that include occasional hammy acting from Barbara O'Neil and the slow pacing that nearly bogged down the third act. But Anatole Litvak's direction, along with a first-rate screenplay by Casey Robinson, excellent production designs, and superb performances from a cast led by Bette Davis and Charles Boyer have led me to regard "ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO" as an excellent example of a Hollywood costume melodrama at its best.

Dear WWP
I was one of those raising hell for all the dog whistling in V5's corebook, and I was one whose questions were picked by Jason Carl during the AMA hosted back during the summer. I was actually banned from the WWP pages afterwards, but that's another story. I am a critic, I have given hell for silly things, and more serious things, but I've always been a client and I've always been a fan. Which is why I write for the Vault, to show we can do better.
WWP, you said you listened, you told Neo Nazis to gtfo, but you did not ACT on it. On your apology about V5 Camarilla's inclusion of the Chechen purge of homosexuals, people are using triple brackets (a VERY KNOWN neo nazi code). And they're not banned.
Anyway, if you have low attention spawn, here's some videos you need to watch, then reread the things you've put out. These are the videos I want you to watch. From start to finish. This is the reason Wraith (and Mage) aren't as toxic as Werewolf or Vampire. Vampire is the worst offender. You wouldn't believe the amount of neo nazis who love VTMB and who sent more than a little criticism because "omg new mod has latino characters, fuck them mexicans".
Videos that we have linked your way ever since the WoD Preludes. Its time you watch them again, and take notes. There's a reason we, as players, aren't raising hell about Shoah. This is why.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDEgXUqHL9Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP4_bMhZ4gA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0ci6rYOleM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jKsj345Jjw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6xQlnzffRg
Your words don't match your actions, WWP. Your apology is hollow and empty. Your edgelord "shock for shock value" attitude is malicious, protects far right people, and harms minorities.
You have a multimillion dollar worth IP, and you're working on it li if you were two dude in a garage.
Your game goes full Jerry Springer by "interviewing" Anarchs about their sexual kinks. Damsel's page in Anarch.. Well, there's art next to her texting, and.. Dawkins openly says "oh that's not her, it's just the filler image", which is either a plain lie, or your layout and design folks are really -that- bad.
White Wolf and people who want to see how we can play all while incorporating difficult, current, tragic situations. Let me show you Bury Me My Love. A Syrian woman leaves to try and reach Germany to get asylum. A mobile game which can happen "live" (using actual hours/days in between texts) or not. Where you, her husband, influence her decisions about the routes to take. And you can replay and try other routes. But most importantly, you learn about facts, you can see the map and read the news. You can educate yourself. And there's humor, and terrible themes.
Do we want more of This War of Mine, or more of Ciudad Juarez? Do we want more of Papers Please, or Fatal?
You need to hire experts, once again. We talk about privilege, because I had to teach one of the pillars of the community about the triple brackets thing, because you just don't see it. You don't have enough women. You don't have enough queer people. Chechnya's write ups TERRIFIED my gay friends, who have been excorcised, who live fearful of what could happen to them if their neighborhood found out, who have been to conversion therapies, who live in religious dictatorships.
You're being MALICIOUS. You have a big Polish far right audience. You have a big Hungarian far right audience. You're making things worse. You have Bolsanero fans. You have Golden Dawn fans. This isn't about political differences and "agreeing to disagreeing". This is about themwanting to kill us.
Want to make mature games, or what tweens believe is mature?
We deserve better than it.
You're spitting on what VtM opened, sometimes in a fairly clumpsy way, but you're now a multimmilion dollar worth ip, you don't have the "we're two dudes in a garage" excuse anymore.
(add: this is the chechnya section and some comments to read for yourself) (on reddit too, if you’d like)

Roy Orbison with fans, London, c. 1965.
( 12 Days of Christmas 6/12 )
In my previous post (on the right column), I called Carl a scumbag and implied John, Roy, and Jerry Lee were too, as scum sticks together. And goddamn Ellis was ruthless in writing about Roy, his book has so many stories of Roy being scummy. Unfortunately, they’re little tidbits and stories compiled into an essay that is the chapter.
I’ll do my best to paraphrase and share what I can!
When Claudette died, Roy used work to cope and distract himself from grief. When not recording or performing, he went on other ventures to keep busy. His film debut as an actor in “The Fastest Guitar Alive,” and finding his and Claudette’s boys a mom. The film premiered in New York City, on January 15, 1967. He attended with Francine Herack, a 23-year-old, airline stewardess from L.A. Reporters called her “the new pretty woman in Roy’s life.” It was also noted how similar she looked to Claudette, both being attractive brunettes. Roy told the New York Daily Mirror; he hoped Francine would visit him on his “forthcoming” tour. He added, “it looks as though it’s impossible–so we’re thinking of spending a holiday in Jamaica instead when we really get to know more about one another.” Not long after, Roy was seeing other girls, excessively so, whether he felt like it or not. I wish I knew who he said this next part to, though, whether it was to a reporter or to one of Roy’s relatives or friends interviewed by Ellis. He justified his actions; he had the boys to think of. Saying, “a father isn’t enough, I can only take them part of the way.”
This leads to the scumbag story:
“After Claudette’s death, Roy turned to prostitutes, according to Bobby (Blackburn), who says they drove to Juarez in Roy’s Jaguar XKE two-seater convertible and visited a cat house. As they sat in the bar buying their girls some drinks, someone played Roy’s ‘Yo te amo Maria’ on the jukebox. When Roy and Bobby took a trip to the men’s room, Roy said, “For gosh sakes, don’t tell them that that’s me’s singing that song. I want to be incognito.” When they returned to the table, Roy’s girl kept getting coins from him and playing 'Yo te amo Maria.' Since she obviously loved it so much, Roy finally couldn’t resist telling her, “That’s me singin’ that song.” She looked at him for a moment in silence. When the next song came on the jukebox, she said, “That’s me singing that song.” And when the next song came on she said, “And that’s the bartender.” “They gave us a hard time,” Bobby recalled. “But it was great fun, bein’ single and singin’ songs with Roy in Mexico.”
Apparently, when he frequented those brothels, he was looking for a mom for those boys. I understand he was in a dark place but how he justified using women, whether in brothels or dating, was scummy. It's a miracle Roy met Barbara, if they never met, he likely would've kept on how he was, and who knows what would've become of him.
Paraphrased/Story from "Dark Star: The Roy Orbison Story" by Ellis Amburn, pg 151 - 153.

History of Timbiriche: Peekskill
Tumblr media
Peekskill population: 4 families, 5 Sims.
Peekskill is a small suburb which also includes a busy shopping street. It was intended as an alternative to people who wanted the simplicity of life in suburb like Timbiriche, but with the amenities of a city like Nueva Juarez.
Tumblr media
However, despite the successful businesses which have opened, few families have made permanent homes in this neighbourhood. It's most prominent citizens were the Timbiriche Chief of Police Carl Kanisky and his family. Following his death, his family has relocated out of Peekskill.
Tumblr media
Despite it's lack of residents, many sims visit Peekskill for it's shops. On the right side of the street we have Bergdorf and Goodmans Boutique, Pepe's Pets, H&M Peekskill and inter@ctive Cafe.
On the left is Wedgewood Strip Club, Senor Sombrero's Mexican Food, New & Used Record Shop, Hickory Dickory Clocks (owned by Timbiriche resident Hilda Spellman), and a home business which will be opening soon, Edna's Edibles & Dispensary run by Edna Garrett.
Tumblr media
Peekskill sees a lot of temporary residents due to The Eastland School for Girls, a boarding school for teenage sims which is also Peekskill's oldest building.
Tumblr media
Peekskill is also home to the only farm in Timbiriche, the Toda family farm currently being run by third generation farmer and ex-NJZ48 member Rinne Toda.
Tumblr media
Peekskill's newest residents are the newlyweds Shane Sinutko and Wednesday Addams, who moved in to the Addams Castle following their graduation from Hillman College.

12MAR2022: “I learned my lesson! I’ll never do that again!” Until I do it again. Such was the case yesterday after noon, when I cease drinking coffee so the caffeine won’t disturb my night of rest. Similarly, (green)tea has almost as much caffeine, which I learned from SIL Janet….. Many years ago, while executor for my mother (RIP), I was clearing out her home at #3 Hyer Valley Road, Lake SpringMO-USA and came across a clay vase full of ancient tea bags. Not wanting to throw them away, I boiled up tapwater and steeped the little bags. Whilst removing paintings/photos/memorabilia from the walls, the hot tea was rather tasty. That evening, I, unfortunately, was unable to rest from the day’s labors; my eyes wouldn’t stay closed/my brain couldn’t be contained. The power had not been cut, the television still worked, and, fortunately, there was a “MASH” marathon being broadcast. A few days later, during a visit with fiduciary executor brother Carl/his wife Janet, I learned the cause of my inability to rest. At that time, I resolved to be wary of tea, especially if thinking that I can substitute it (tea) for coffee, which can be done—IF the tea is herbal. Anyway, I keep both versions in mugs ready for consumption at the appropriate time, i.e., caffeinated (bungee jumper) before noon, non-caffeinated (.Ardovino’s) after noon. Sadly, I didn’t pay as close attention yesterday after noon and ingested the bungee mug, which led to little rest overnight. “I’ve learned my lesson! I’ll never do that again!”… (at El Paso Texas / Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbAr6D9udBb/?utm_medium=tumblr

June Carter and Johnny Cash
June Carter was Born in Maces Springs, Virginia on June 23rd, 1929, her mother Valerie was a musician.
In the 1940s June, along with her mother and her two sisters, formed The Carter Sisters band, playing eventually joining the cast of the national country music showcase the Grand Ole Opry. It was at the the Opry where June met honky-tonk singer Carl Smith, whom she married in 1952. Together had one daughter, Carlene, who would become a successful country musician.
In Grand Ole Opry 1956 Johnny Cash made his debut. He had recently released the song "I Walk the Line" which had become a then-rare crossover hit with fans of both pop and country. Carl Smith welcomed Cash to the show, but it was a backstage introduction that would make the biggest impact on Smith's wife, June. “I can’t remember anything else we talked about, except his eyes,” June Carter wrote in the notes on Cash’s 2000 box set, Love, God, Murder.
By the early 1960s, Carter was touring with Cash regularly as a backup singer, duet partner, and entertainer. She had by that time divorced from Carl Smith, but was now married to a police officer named Edwin Nix, with whom she would have another daughter, Rosie, who also became a country musician. Both Carter and Cash would remain married to their spouses until 1966 and 1967 respectively.
Thought the 1960s, Cash famously dealt with a serious addiction to drugs and alcohol. His marriage was crumbling under his frequent absences, infidelities, and addictions and he was known to cancel or simply miss concert appearances. Cash was arrested seven times on offenses related to drugs or alcohol, including a 1965 arrest after Cash crossed the border from Texas to Juarez, Mexico and was caught returning with over 1,000 amphetamine tablets in his possession. Cash proposed to Carter onstage at the London Ice House in front of a crowd of 7,000 in February 1968. They married just a few weeks later.
Together the two continued in fruitful musical careers for many years, sharing grammy awards in 1967 and 1970 in addition to their individual awards (2 solo Grammys for Carter and 11 for Cash, including a lifetime achievement award.) They also helmed The Johnny Cash Show, a TV variety show featuring musical guests like Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson between 1969-1971.
Their only child together, John Carter Cash, was born in 1970. He would go on to become a musician and music producer in his own right.
Cash’s love letter to Carter for her 65ᵗʰ birthday is now considered to be one of the best love letters of all time.
The couple remained together for the rest of their lives, passing away a scant four months apart: Carter in May 2003, Cash that September. Throughout that time they remained an iconic music love story who inspired 2018 A Star Is Born movie with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
