Friends, enemies, comrades, Jacobins, Monarchist, Bonapartists, gather round. We have an important announcement:
The continent is beset with war. A tenacious general from Corsica has ignited conflict from Madrid to Moscow and made ancient dynasties tremble. Depending on your particular political leanings, this is either the triumph of a great man out of the chaos of The Terror, a betrayal of the values of the French Revolution, or the rule of the greatest upstart tyrant since Caesar.
But, our grand tournament is here to ask the most important question: Now that the flower of European nobility is arrayed on the battlefield in the sexiest uniforms that European history has yet produced (or indeed, may ever produce), who is the most fuckable?
The bracket is here: full bracket and just quadrant I

when: royal statistics
Reigning European monarchs by length of reign - as of 1 December 2014
Notes: I have lumped the fifteen non-European Commonwealth realms together regardless of when they gained independence. No disrespect intended, it just makes the list easier to read.
For a complete list of current reigning monarchs throughout the world, please click here. Note that Karolina Augusta would rank after Harald V of Norway.
RANK, NAME, STATE(S), ASCENDED
Elizabeth II, United Kingdom (and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis), 6 February 1952
Margrethe II, Denmark, 14 January 1972
Carl XVI Gustaf, Sweden, 15 September 1973
Hans-Adam II, Liechtenstein, 13 November 1989
Harald V, Norway, 17 January 1991
Karolina Augusta I, Mecklenburg, 20 January 1992
Henri, Luxembourg, 7 October 2000
Albert II, Monaco, 6 April 2005
Francis, Vatican City, 13 March 2013
Willem-Alexander, Netherlands, 30 April 2013
Philippe, Belgium, 21 July 2013
Felipe VI, Spain, 19 June 2014
Other notable non-European monarchs include:
Rama IX of Thailand, ascended 9 June 1946
Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, ascended 5 October 1967
Akihito of Japan, ascended 7 January 1989
Abdullah II of Jordan, ascended 7 February 1999
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan, ascended 9 December 2006
Some (Fake) Fun Facts
From 20 January 1992 to 30 April 2013, there were four reigning queens in Europe, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Margrethe II of Denmark, Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Karolina Augusta I of Mecklenburg,
Since the death of Wilhelm Franz I of Mecklenburg in 1992, only two other European monarch has died while on the throne, Baudouin of Belgium in 1993, and Rainier III of Monaco in 2005. All other new European monarchs since 1992 have come to the throne due to abdication (Luxembourg, Vatican City, Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain).
The regency of Karolina Augusta I, which lasted from 1992 to 2006, was the first regency of a minor that Europe had experienced since the minority of Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria, which lasted from 1943 to 1946, when the Bulgarian monarchy was abolished.
The regency during the minority of Karolina Augusta I is among the longest in European history at fourteen years, seven months, and twenty-six days. In earlier times it was common to grant maturity on the sixteenth, fourteenth or thirteenth birthday of the child monarch, whereas maturity is now granted on the eighteenth birthday of the child monarch.

As a consequence of this, the majority of his army became Han, who not only stayed on the Inkitej metalcore cowboy more like metalcore clownboy shirt but also leveled up to the middle and high ranking military officers. If you’re familiar with the Roman Empire politics and certain parts of Eastern Asian history, this means that the Emperor can no longer became the Emperor and even the general cannot be the general without the military officers’ supports. These officers became the most important interest group and backbone to back up kublai and the Yuan dynasty. Of course, they were also extremely arrogant and annoying and not afraid of murdering their generals or started a rebellion if they were paid less. Their pattern of behaviors brought down the Tang Dynasty, such that the Song Dynasty had to oppress them in order to maintain the unity and power, which resulted in the extreme weak military forces against others including Mongolian. Ironically, the way of the Yuan dynasty and the Mongolian kept their dominance was as same as the Tang Dynasty’s strategy by granting these military leaders the great power and benefits. The history basically circled back at that moment.

The Walking Dead Rewatch: Season One: Episode One:
-Logan meeting Rick in the opening scene, where Rick is searching for gas and he comes across the Walker girl that picks up her teddy bear. Seeing that Rick is backing up, Logan hits the girl in the back of the head with his baseball bat.
-Modern Day AU where Logan and Carl are police partners.
-If Rick does pick up Logan by episode one, when they meet Morgan and Duane, Morgan thinks that Logan is Rick's son. I mean, Logan basically adopts Rick, so it is kinda true.
-Lucille and RIck being in the same hospital. Logan had been hiding in the hospital after his mom died, waiting for his Dad. He hears Rick call for the nurse and hearing another person, goes to help.
-As iffy as Jurassic Park III was, it was kinda cool when Dr. Grant and the kid teamed up, with the kid knowing slightly more about surviving on the island.
-After Rick goes to his home and is shattered about Carl and Lori not being there, Logan tries to comfort him. "There's no blood. They probably left, to be safe. We'll find them."
-Logan tackling Duane after he hits Rick with the fucking shovel.
-Logan and Duane might actually get along well. Since they both saw their mom's as walkers. They would be buddies and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.
-It has been established that there were radio broadcasts about Atlanta being a refugee center. Question is; would that be for all states having their capitals be the refugee center or would it be dependent on city infrastructure and the ability of the military to lock certain zones down?
-Even early on, Logan prefers using knives, baseball bats, and other melee weapons, especially when there's only a couple of walkers. If there's a situation where there's only one or two walkers, he'll use a knife, never a gun.
-Logan does think it's really cool to ride in a police car, since that's the job he wanted.
-Brain consumed by Logan and Carl being raised as brothers.
-Logan riding Shadow when Rick finds his chestnut horse at the farm. Shadow probably ends up bolting before Rick and Chestnut find the herd. Or right when they find the herd and Logan can't control Shadow. He can only hold on for dear life.
-Final thought: AMC really should have let Frank Darabont direct all of the Walking Dead. We were robbed of something special when they screwed him over.

173 Influential SCPs
I went to SCPper, found the most upvoted articles by users who've made at least one SCP, and sorted by time. These aren't necessarily the 173 best articles on the site, but I think they're likely to be the most influential. Longtime fans have probably read most or all of these but maybe this could be a starting point for newcomers.
I think sorting by time is important because the Foundation's been around almost 17 years. Writers come and go, trends come and go, new writers are influenced by what came before, and later articles are often longer and more complex than earlier ones. Just sorting by most upvoted bounces you around time; on the main wiki you read mostly series 1 articles then get dunked into SCP-5000. I hope this is a more natural progression.
Using upvotes from writers only is important because the more writers like an article, the more likely later SCPs are to be influenced by it, so those articles are more likely to be important for understanding the wiki as a whole.
I might do an alternate version of this list that replaces the extremely long articles with shorter SCPs.
If you have trouble understanding one of the articles (some of the later ones get LONG), look it up on r/SCPDeclassified.

Kenneth Carl Crawford III, Pennsylvania inmate EN4939, born 1983, initial incarceration in 1999 at age 16, scheduled for parole consideration in 2052
Murder, 2 counts
Serving two life sentences for the murders of Diana Algar and Jose Molina at the Paradise Camp Resort in Hollenback Township, PA. He and his co-defendant David Lee Hanley killed the pair in an “execution style” after the couple picked Crawford and Hanley while hitchhiking.
Sentenced was reconsidered after ruling from the Supreme Court on life imprisonment for juvenile offenders. Crawford, originally of Oklahoma, was granted a re-sentencing.
At the re-sentencing, Crawford learned he will continue to serve what could amount to a life sentence.  The Judge gave Crawford two sentences of 26 years to life in prison to be run consecutively, and he was also given credit for the nearly 18 years he has already spent in prison.
The ruling comes after a lengthy period of testimony, when, for three days, prosecutors and defense attorneys argued why Crawford should either stay in, or be given the opportunity to eventually be released from, prison.
The Assistant District Attorney reiterated the prosecution’s previous points before the Judge read the sentence, saying that Crawford needs to be held accountable for his crimes. Prosecutors were looking for between 35 years and life in prison for each homicide, to be run consecutively.
The Defense attorney asked for leniency, in spite of the loss of life. The defense was asking for a sentence of between 25 and 50 years in prison. “With better information, the sentence can be one that respects that loss and recognizes that things have evolved here,” she said.
Part of that evolution, she said, boils down to the rehabilitative efforts Crawford has made in prison, which made up much of the testimony found in the multi-day hearing.
Since his incarceration, Crawford has been a model inmate, as described by employees at SCI Greene where he has been housed.
He was also described as a “beautiful” person by members of the Berwick-area Sanford family. Cindy Sanford met Crawford through art he made while in prison, and, after slowly growing close with him, she and her husband Keith decided to adopt Crawford as their son.
Algar’s husband, Robert Algar Jr., seemed to bring both of these points together while addressing the court.
“I believe that Mr. Crawford has changed his ways; he’s trying to be a better person,” he said. “He must pay for what he did. If he proves to the court he has changed, he should be given the opportunity to move forward.”
In addition to the two sentences for the homicide, the Judge also sentenced Crawford to an aggregated sentence of between 606 and 1,012 months, or 50.5 and 101 years, in prison for counts of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery and theft.
While these sentences will run consecutive to each other, Crawford will serve them at the same time as the homicide sentences.
The Sanford family was in court while the Judge read Crawford’s new sentence. They visibly grew upset when it was revealed that Crawford would not be coming to his new home any time soon.
Members of the Sanford family declined to talk with reporters after the sentencing.
The defense attorney told reporters simply that the defense was disappointed with the Judge’s sentence, which was nearly double what they were hoping for.
in contrast, the state prosecutors said they were satisfied, but were hoping for more time.
Crawford said nothing on his way out of the courthouse, hanging his head as he walked out.

Lock and Key III
Tumblr media
Summary: Millburn Correctional Facility is a tough place to find hope in. But  when Spencer Reid stumbles upon a GED class, led by a teacher with kind  words and a smile that breaks through the dark, he thinks it might not  be so hopeless after all.
Part III: In which Spencer gets a visitor and the Reader’s kindness is repaid with a surprise connection. [Series Masterlist] [Previous] .............
The bruise on Luis’ face doesn’t look any better in the daylight as they stand side by side in the yard, huddled in the jackets that are never quite warm enough. From across the yard, a group of guys leers at them.
“I knew this was gonna happen,” Luis sighs. “I knew if I came back here this would happen.”
“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do?” Reid asks.
Luis shakes his head. “It’s got nothing to do with you. Just… just don’t leave me alone, okay?”
“Okay.” The sudden feeling of someone setting a hand on his shoulder makes him jump.
Richie grins at them, the smile of a shark. “Your presence is requested,” he says. Seeing no other option, they nervously follow him across the yard. Malcolm, Xavier, Carl, and several other guys are sitting there. Is this a test too? Some sort of initiation?
“Einstein and Slim Jim,” Xavier says. “Just the guys I was hoping to see. Listen, Einstein, we need you to do something for us.” Reid glances at Luis, hoping the panic he feels isn’t too obvious. Will he have to hurt someone? Is he about to get hurt? Xavier stands up, reaches into his pocket… and withdraws a copy of Wuthering Heights.
“Tell me, what the fuck is a moor?”
Reid frowns. “You – you want me to explain what a moor is?”
“Well yeah,” Xavier laughs. “Ain’t nobody here visiting no fucking moors. But this book keeps talking about them. Now I like the drama with Cathy and Heathcliff and all, but what the hell is a moor?”
“Um, well a moor – a moor is a specific type of habitat. It’s mostly found in highland areas – elevated areas. Usually a wide open plain with hills, land that hasn’t been cultivated for farming. The plant life is largely relegated to shrubs and grasses. The weather can be unpredictable and wild, which is why in the book Brontë uses the moor not just as a setting, but also as a metaphor. It’s a metaphor for freedom, as well as for the supernatural.”
“Huh,” Malcolm says. “Sounds kinda nice. I bet you can see the sky go on for miles. Maybe Y/N would bring us some pictures of one.” It strikes Reid that some of these men haven’t seen the world beyond the rec yard in years. Only given glimpses of sky surrounded by barbed wire or through the bars of a window. There is a sudden ache in his heart for the view from the jet window. He misses the expanse of sky, the earth so vast below him. How did he ever take that freedom for granted?
“You keep dreaming about moors,” Carl laughs. “The only pictures I want are of hot babes with legs that go on for miles.”
“Good luck with that,” another guy says, punching Carl on the shoulder. “You’re not gonna get any babes sending you pictures with an ugly ass mug like yours!”
The group breaks out into guffaws as Carl tries to find a comeback, and Reid can feel himself relax a little bit. Until another prisoner passing by steps closer to them. “You’re just lucky you get to look at a bitch every week,” he says. “That sexy teacher lady – I’d love to get a piece of that ass.”
Xavier practically shoots up from where he sits, getting into the newcomer’s face. “The fuck you say man?” he snaps. “Listen, Teach is a good person. She’s out here trying to help us, you understand? So I better not catch you looking at her wrong, Toadstool. You can think what you want, but when it comes to her, you keep your thoughts to your damn self. Or we’ll give you a piece of something you won’t soon forget. We good?”
Toadstool holds his hands up. “Alright man, we good. Calm down.” He hurries off to another part of the yard.
Richie gives him a fist bump. “Nice, Hammerhead.”
Xavier just shakes his head. “It’s one thing to talk about someone else’s old lady, but Teach is different.”
Reid shifts from foot to foot, uncomfortable with the outright display of masculinity and the topic of conversation. He wouldn’t let himself think words like Toadstool’s, let alone speak them out loud – but he can’t deny that Y/N is on his mind. Far more often than he’d anticipated. He tells himself it’s natural – that she is his only consistent connection to the outside world, that she treats him with kindness, reminds him of the softness that exists outside of the concrete and steel that cages them inside Millburn. She smells nice and her smile is bright and while there are several good-looking men locked up with him, he’s always had a weakness for pretty girls. And he thinks she’s pretty – pretty thoughtful, pretty smart, pretty amazing. He shouldn’t think any of it, because Richie is right. She’s there to help them. She’s there to teach them. He shouldn’t repay her kindness with such inappropriate affection.
He hardly even knows her. He sees her for a few hours twice a week. He knows almost nothing about her personal life other than her name and her education and the fact that she lives in the District.
Besides, he can’t afford to let himself get distracted. The bruises on Luis’ face are a vivid reminder that this is a dangerous place. Survival has to come first.
But Xavier asks him if he knows any good ghost stories, because Wuthering Heights reminds him of one, and in spite of himself Spencer is soon regaling the group with a tale that’s just spooky enough to keep them wide-eyed but smiling. And for just a moment, here in this yard, he lets himself relax.
.
While the coffee brews in the kitchen, Y/N weighs her outfit options for the day. After almost three years, she hardly has to think about the visitor dress regulations anymore. When she first started, it felt like such a hassle to find clothing that met the requirements and still let her feel like a teacher.
Nothing form-fitting or low-cut (two requirements she quickly learned were quite subjective based on the guard on duty), no spandex, no dresses or skirts or pants that ended above the knee (even when seated), sleeves couldn’t be too short and fabric couldn’t be too clingy. No jeans, nothing the shade of prison blues, nothing khaki like the prison guards. No colors, patterns, or slogans that could be interpreted as gang-related.  No leggings, no bobby pins, no shorts. Nothing too baggy, nothing with holes, nothing missing buttons, and no underwire bras. And of course, the mandatory underwear rule, which demanded she show proof of her undergarments to the CO at the entrance whenever asked. It never feels any less humiliating.
She throws on a soft, pink, button-less cardigan over a loose floral-print shirt and black trousers. Finding a clean pair of socks and her ring, she grabs her bag and heads into the kitchen in time to greet Marina, who is pouring a cup of coffee with a yawn. “Drive safe and do good,” she says, waving.
“Will do. Go win some arguments today!” Y/N calls back, grabbing her thermos of coffee and lunch and hurrying out the door. The drive to Millburn is almost meditative. She listens to a podcast and sips her coffee and soon enough she’s in the line to pass through the metal detector. There’s rarely any visitors here this early other than the occasional lawyer, but today a blonde woman in a lipstick-patterned blouse with a flower in her hair is arguing with a CO.
“What do you mean it’s too tight?” the woman cries. “This is a shirt, it’s how it fits my body! I can’t help that!”
“The rules are the rules, ma’am,” the CO replies coldly. “You can’t come in with that shirt on.”
“I – my friend is in there! I have to see him, I need to see him. You see, I made – I made a visiting chart and everything and it’s my turn today and he’s not supposed to be here and so I really re–”
“Look lady, I don’t care. Either get a different shirt, or go home.”
“Um, excuse me?” Y/N says. The woman turns around, tears visible in her eyes through her brightly-colored glasses. “Why don’t you come with me? I think I may be able to help.” The woman glances between her and the CO before nodding and following her out to the parking lot. “Don’t worry about that guy, he’s always a jerk. I always keep a spare sweater in my car for moments like this – you can borrow it for today so you can see your friend.”
She’s seen one too many women turned away from Millburn for ridiculous moments like this, and she never knows when a CO might decide he doesn’t like her outfit for the day.
“Thank you,” the woman says. “You’re like my guardian angel right now.” The woman’s voice is high and sweet. She just sounds kind
Y/N nods, opening her trunk. “It’s no problem.”
“I’m Penelope, by the way.”
Y/N hands her the gray blob of a sweater. “Y/N. Nice to meet you. I’m sorry – no matter who wears it, this thing still manages to be three sizes too big. It’s the most shapeless, drab thing I could possibly find, but it’ll get you through the gates almost every time. You can just leave it with the CO when you head out, I can pick it up after work. Trust me, nobody else will take it,” she laughs. “Oh, and you might want to take that flower out of your hair – don’t want them throwing it away.”
Penelope nods and dashes off to her car, catching up in time to walk back through the doors with her. “I love your outfit by the way. Like, how do you manage to still look cute with all these rules?”
She laughs. “A lot of practice.”
“So, um, do you come here a lot?” she asks.
“I’m a teacher here, actually. Mostly GED classes.”
“Oh. I didn’t know they had teachers here. That’s really nice.” They walk through the metal detectors and endure the pat-downs and undergarment rituals before continuing down the corridor. “How do you deal with that every day?” Penelope asks.
Y/N shrugs, hoping the action will help her shed the embarrassment she feels each time a CO’s hands are on her. “I love my students, so I remind myself that it’s for them. And it’s a small price to pay compared to what they experience inside. But it doesn’t make it any less awful.”
“It’s just so dehumanizing!” she says. “I mean, the first time I came they made me take off all my jewelry and then I had to change my shoes because my heels were too sharp, and I nobody told me I’d have to prove I was wearing underwear! I feel like I’m being punished and I’m not even the one in prison!”
The frustration is familiar to Y/N. The rules it seems are meant to frustrate – they’re supposed to discourage any rowdy behavior from the men inside, but they do just as much to discourage visitors. Her wardrobe is largely planned around those rules, the reasons why she owns few short dresses and rarely wears any jewelry besides the moonstone ring Marina gave her as a birthday present years back.
When the corridor splits, it’s time for them to go their separate ways – Y/N to the classrooms, Penelope to the visiting wing. “Thank you,” Penelope says again. “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
“Just enjoy your time with your friend,” she replies. “I know it’ll mean a lot to him.”
The chance encounter has lifted her spirits slightly, and she breezes through the first class of the day on that happy feeling. After Women’s History concludes she hurries back down the halls, through the series of gates she must be buzzed through, and makes it to the warden’s office in time for their meeting. Warden Everton munches on a pastry while she makes her case to get Angela Davis’ autobiography approved by the department. She uses her sweetest voice, plastering on a big smile and talking about how excited she is for her students to read about the life of a brilliant woman in her own words.
After swallowing a huge bite, he looks at her and says, “Sorry Miss Y/L/N, no can do.”
She squeezes her hand into a fist. “But sir, you’ve denied every autobiography by a Black author I’ve proposed for this class. It’s a class on women’s history, and most of the students in it are Black. I want them to be able to see themselves, their mothers, their sisters in the curriculum.”
“BOP policy,” Everton says. “Angela Davis isn’t permitted in here. Next thing you’re gonna be telling me your students need to read Are Prisons Obsolete.”
She grits her teeth and fights back the urge to say, maybe they should because maybe they are! But arguing carceral policies with the warden won’t get her anywhere. Y/N inhales slowly, twists her ring on her finger, and forces her brightest smile. “Of course. I understand. In that case, perhaps the Bureau could help me purchase copies of The Diary of Anne Frank? There aren’t enough copies for every student to have one, and I believe that book hasn’t been banned here.”
Everton considers this, leaning back in his chair. So casual with the control he exerts. “I suppose we could reimburse you half the costs. Bring the receipts to me next week and we’ll work it out then.”
Y/N thanks him and leaves the office with a sigh. She’ll have to readjust her budget for the month to afford that many books – maybe she’ll try to find some secondhand or see if the local libraries have extras they could donate. It’s hard not to leave meetings with Everton feeling defeated. But as she turns the corner, she spots Penelope waving to her, still wearing the oversized gray sweater.
“Oh hi! It’s you! I wanted to tell you earlier, I just love your cardigan. It’s so pretty.”
Y/N glances at the pink garment she’s wearing. “Oh, thanks! I try to wear bright colors to work because my students don’t really get to see a lot of color inside.” It’s all a blur of gray and blue here. She tries to bring them the more vivid hues of the rainbow, something to brighten their day, to remind them of places beyond these walls.
“Oh I love that! I’m so glad I ran into you, I wanted to thank you again. I just got done visiting with Spencer – that’s my friend who’s here. I was wondering, he told me he was helping with a class! Is that one of your classes?”
She doesn’t know what to say. This is the first time she’s run into one of her students’ loved ones while at Millburn. What are the odds that this woman, with her bright colors and enthusiasm is friends with the quiet Spencer she teaches? Her mind tries to imagine connections, the ways in which the two of them might have first crossed paths. “Um, yeah. Yeah, I think so.”
Penelope grins. “Well I just wanted to tell you that you must be doing something right because the first time I’ve seen him really smile in here was when he was talking about your class just now. I think it’s really good for him. He’s like, a genius, you know? Like certifiably. Knows everything about everything. We used to go to comic conventions and he’d always explain why the physics behind time travel was right or wrong for a certain movie.”
Her grin fades to a wistful smile. “Sorry, I’m rambling. I just miss him. He’s got a really good heart, and he’s been through more than anyone with a heart like that should have.” And his heart is good. She can see it in the patience he shows his classmates, the thoughtful way he encourages them and listens to them. In the three and a half weeks she’s known, she’s known that for sure.
“Well, I’m sure a visit for you is doing wonders for that good heart of his,” Y/N offers. And when she navigates her way back through the maze of cages and corridors to the classroom, she can tell it has. Spencer stands waiting, tapping his foot. There is a lightness in his posture, his shoulders not weighed down by the burdens he’s carrying for once.
“Happy Monday,” she says.
There is a glimmer in his hazel eyes that she’s never seen before as he turns to her and launches immediately into conversation. “Did you know Monday comes from the Old English word mōndaeg, which meant the moon’s day? Despite linguistic variations, most common languages today use a similar naming system for the day, all referencing the moon. Ironically, it’s the day with the highest rates of sleep deprivation and correspondingly, the lowest rates of productivity at work.”
As he talks he gestures wildly with his hands, and his voice doesn’t have the resigned weariness she’s grown familiar with. His newfound enthusiasm is endearing. “I didn’t know that,” she says. “But I’m glad I do now! I’m quite fond of the moon, so I guess that gives me a new reason to appreciate the day.” She turns the key to unlock the classroom door. “And how do you feel about Mondays, Doc?”
Spencer thinks for a moment before answering. “Mondays always meant the start of the work week, which I liked because it meant I got to see my – my friends. To be honest I kind of lost track of time in here, but… I think I’m starting to really like Mondays again.”
She can’t help but smile. “Well, I’m glad about that. It’s important to have things to look forward to.”
“I think your class is that for a lot of people. Everyone looks forward to it. I mean, you made something for us to look forward to. That’s pretty incredible. I mean, I used to teach here and there but I never heard anyone talk about a professor’s lectures the way the guys here talk about your classes. I think – I think you’re changing their lives.”
His voice is soft, reverent. It warms her own heart as she sets her bag down on the tiny desk in the corner. “I’m not changing their lives,” she says. “They’re changing their own lives. I’m just here to give them a nudge in the right direction.”
She sits on the edge of the desk, turning her ring. “My friend gave me this not long after I started teaching. It’s a moonstone.”
“Can I see it?” he asks. She holds her hand out to him. There is a short moment of hesitation before he tentatively reaches his hand out to touch hers, his fingers lifting hers closer to inspect the ring she wears. It comes as a surprise how soft his touch is, how big his hands are compared to hers.
“She said that a good education was like the sun,” she tells him. He lets go of her hand, shoving his own into his pockets as he listens. “And my students don’t have access to that freedom, to that light. So my job is to be the moon – to reflect that light as much as I can for them.” That is what she tries to do, to bring light to dark places. “Of course, my friend is a lawyer so she has a penchant for heavy-handed metaphors. But I think she got it right in a way. I try to reflect light – but I think the most important thing I can do is reflect the light of the students I teach back to them. To show them the potential they have and how bright they are.”
“That’s very beautiful,” he says. “But I don’t think it’s entirely an accurate metaphor. You see, the moon doesn’t produce its own light. And I definitely think that you bring your own here. Even if you spend a lot of your time trying to focus on what we have to give – I don’t think it would quite be the same without you.”
His words go straight to her heart. The frustration of the pat-downs, the strict COs, the meeting with the warden, and the infuriating book bans melt away. There will be moments for raging against the system, but for now she’s grateful to have her attention refocused. Her students are happy. She’s making a difference. That’s all she’s ever wanted.
“Thank you, Spencer,” she says. “I think I needed to hear that today.”
The smile he gives her is tender. “All good teachers do.”
