Walking with the giants

Just north of Chiang Mai, Thailand, is the Elephant Nature Park.  This is a 300 acre preserve for Asian elephants that have been rescued from logging industry and tourist riding camps.  Here the elephants are rehabilitated and begin to learn that people are kind, gentle and caring - far different from how they have been treated to this point in their lives. 

We went on the Care for Elephants day hike where we met 3 new friends - Pookie, Amore, and Lucky (the baby).  All have been rescued from abusive situations and the older ladies immediately took to looking after Lucky when he arrived.  We did not ride the elephants or force them to do anything they did not want to be doing.  No tricks, no direct commands, just elephants being curious, gentle giants.  

Fun facts:

Elephants love sweet things, particularly sugar cane, watermelon, squash, and cucumbers.  They eat 12-14 hours per day and sleep only 4 hours 

They are more respectful and aware of their space and your’s than any horse 

Their eyes are extremely sensitive to light and camera flashes- many circus elephants are blind because of this

Their mahout’s LOVE their elephant, staying with them nearly 24 hours per day. At the Elephant Nature Park there is 1 mahout for each elephant and they get the best care and interaction possible.  A story was told of one mahout who was so devastated when his elephant passed that he became severely depressed and could no longer work as a mahout.  

They are quiet - you cannot hear them walking behind you or coming up to you

Their skin is very soft and incredibly sensitive

Elephants feel and express emotions, just like humans - one look into their eyes and you know what they are feeling
