Luka can be cold, distant and closed off to everyone new. He doesn't enjoy meeting new people, especially if they're another Vampire, and struggles with holding casual conversations. Due to being manipulated and controlled by his father, he has a great desire to have personal independence. He doesn't take kindly to other people attempting to control him. This includes Hiroki, even though they're childhood friends.

As someone whose constantly on the move and oversees the other Vampires in Abarith, he tends to rather focus on large, important issues, and delegate the details. He htes change but enjoys adventure, and exploration. Luka is dynamic, visionary and versatile, able to make constructive use of freedom. He hates being restricted by rules and conventions and tends to be pessimistic, intelligent, and tends to have a hard time making friends. He is also restless, tidy, and rebellious, especially against other vampires.

ʜɪꜱᴛᴏʀʏ

Luka was born to the Pureblood Vampires John Reid and Lacina Reid. John was a Pureblood that had been around since the dawn of Abarith’s new age, born under his own father who found himself hunted and staked by the humans who came searching for the supernatural creatures. John was always a rather kind man at first, someone who truly adored his wife and his son Luka. Who held his place in society within Abarith with a grace and elegance, the same one that he instilled upon his son.

Pureblooded Vampires age a lot slower than humans, they spend more of their time younger until a certain point where their bodies stop growing entirely. By his hundredth year on Earth, Luka would appear no more than ten, and at two hundred he looks around twenty and will no longer age.

His mother, Lacina, was the previous head of the Coven in Abarith, serving on the previous King’s Court as keeper of the Vampires. She instilled a desire for love and cooperation within the Vampires and was highly loved. She also was the best friend to the Head Witch, Evelynn Cross. Luka had spent a lot of time with her at the Castle, learning along with Hiroki, Amir and Wyatt how to act like the nobility that the boys were.

Luka never liked rules, or learning what they all had dubbed rather pointless things. But his mother had been teaching for a long time how proper ediate was important for people of their standing, especially Purebloods. So though he never cared much for it he put the same amount of determination and effort into his studies as he did everything else his mother taught him.

After the death of Evelynn Cross the Vampires found themselves the subject of hatred and resentment, being blamed for the woman’s death as the crime scene painted it like a Vampire attack. Tensions before that had been rather high, Abarith becoming tired of the cruel reign of their King. One night the Reid family home found itself set on fire, with both Lacina and Luka inside. Luka, still only a child, had done his best to attempt to save his mother but the woman being the target of the fire was far lost to the hellish blazes. His father, having returned home, saved his son but lost his wife.

John was never the same after that.

Luka spent his remaining years watching his father deteriorate in sanity, create the perfect blood tables ( Reid Pharmaceuticals ) to substitute Vampires thirst but at a price that no one realizes. His father even kidnapped a child, experimented on him, and then turned him to become the perfect sired vampire that would follow his word without hesitation. Luka keeps his mouth shut, keeps his distance from his father and focuses on attempting to keep the Vampires in check and clean up their messes.

Tension between the Witch Coven and the Vampire’s is still high, even after all these years, and the two districts avoid each other like a plague. The Vampire’s can be petty, will start fights, and Luka doesn’t hesitate to put them in their place.

He doesn’t like being Court Head Vampire however.

   EYE HEALTH SCREENING

 Many eye diseases carry no symptoms, and is usually diagnosed at later stages. At Optika Optometrist, we strongly believe that early detection is always better than treatment, hence it has been our standard operationing procedure to screen for any eye diseases or abnormalities. To perform the eye health screening procedure, Optika Optometrist has brought in DRS Retinal Imaging System from Italy and Keeler Pulsair IntelliPuff Tonometer from the United Kingdom. The DRS Retinal Imaging System is a special camera that captures high resolution photograph of the eye’s back part (also known as retina). This state-of-the-art technology assists in the detection and monitor of eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, macular degeneration and signs of glaucoma.

While the Keeler Pulsair IntelliPuff Tonometer performs eye pressure test to detect signs of glaucoma, without causing much irritation or pain. We strongly recommend clients who are above 40 years old to undergo eye health screening at least once a year, as they are more prone to eye diseases. With early detection of any diseases or abnormalities, early management and treatment could be taken if any problems occur, hence avoiding risk for permanent vision loss.

How to Groom and Bathe Flat-Faced Dogs

Flat-faced dogs, also known as brachycephalic dogs, are a favorite of many dog owners. Flat-faced dogs have broad skulls and an elongated soft palate. Other brachycephalic breeds are the Boxer, Pug, Pekingese, English Toy Spaniel, Shih Tzu, and more. Grooming and bathing are essential to your dog’s health, vitality, and longevity.

Cleaning Facial Folds

Skin folds around the eyes and jowls give flat-faced dogs their trademark wrinkles, as well as increased susceptibility to inflammation and infection. Skin fold dermatitis is an inflammatory condition caused by friction or overgrowth of yeast and bacteria. Moisture, food, and dirt create an optimal breeding environment for bacteria to multiply and cause discomfort for your dog.

Signs of infection include:

Redness

Swelling

Discoloration

Odor

Discharge

Itchiness

Fortunately, regular checking and cleaning can substantially reduce the risk of infection. After wiping the fold with a damp cloth, use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture. If there’s redness and irritation in the fold, use a zinc oxide paste to keep it dry. (Note that ingestion of zinc oxide can cause stomach irritation and repeated zinc exposure could contribute to anemia.)

Cleaning Tail Folds

Some dogs have a screw tail, meaning the vertebrae are curved or twisted. As dogs mature, tail folds deepen, becoming prone to dermatitis. Daily cleaning prevents fecal contamination and infection. If their tail looks puffy, there’s probably a ton of extra hair which can cause areas to go bald.  We recommend combing out excess fur.

Cleaning Vulvar Folds

In some female dogs, the vulva is encased in a fold. Vulvar folds “require the same care as the tail, where you’re lifting up the fold, cleaning it out, and putting zinc oxide paste to keep it dry,

Eye Care

Eyes need daily checking because “flat-faced dogs are more prone to corneal ulcers. Look for squinting, swelling, and cloudiness. Some tear production is normal for lubricating the eye and removing debris. Excessive tearing, however, should be checked with your veterinarian as it may be a sign of allergies, infection, or eyelid abnormalities.

Ear Care

A healthy ear is pink and odorless. Your dog’s ear canal should be clean and dry after bathing or swimming. Floppy ears tend to get less ventilation than pointed ones. With both ear types, check for the accumulation of wax and dirt and brush the edges of the ear to remove excess fur.

For most dogs, cleaning the ear once or twice a week is sufficient. Dogs with allergies or recurrent ear infections likely need more attention. Watch for vigorous head shaking or rubbing to alleviate itchiness.

When cleaning the ear, use a cotton ball or gauze and distilled water. An alternative is a veterinary-approved ear cleaner although these solutions can disrupt the natural pH of the ear. 

Nose Care

Dry and cracked noses aren’t merely an aesthetic issue. If left untreated, a crusty scab can develop, inhibiting your dog’s ability to breathe, smell, and regulate body temperature. When you get the scab off, it’s infected and raw underneath. Applying a moisturizing balm several times a week to prevent dryness and infection.

Nail Care

Flat-faced dogs tend to have thick nails that curl in toward their paw.  The nail width and thickness of a French Bulldog is equivalent to what you see on a Labrador.

Long nails can impair your dog’s mobility. We recommend trimming nails twice a month. Nail grinders with a narrow tip can get into tight spaces between the nail and pads. If you use clippers, “clip the nail on an angle at the top and bottom, making a point.

Dental Care

Smaller dogs tend to experience dental overcrowding and tooth displacement. Overcrowding occurs when dogs retain their baby teeth alongside their adult teeth, the result of which can be periodontal disease and premature tooth loss.

Regardless of your dog’s age, regular brushing is important. Brushing you dogs teeth once a week or even once a month would be helpful.

Apply toothpaste designed for dogs on a toothbrush, rubber finger brush, or gauze. Take care when brushing the incisors which tend to be more pronounced in flat-faced dogs. Between brushings, use a 50-50 solution of water and mouthwash containing no xylitol which is toxic to dogs. You can spray around the gum line to kill the bacteria that form plaque.

Bathing Your Dog

Brush your short or medium-coated dog before and after a bath to prevent matting and irritation. Use a bristle brush or rubber-toothed comb. Remove loose fur, making sure to pull out the dead undercoat which needs daily brushing during shedding season.

Every two to three months is sufficient for bathing a less active, indoor dog. Bathe them on a non-slip rubber mat and avoid leaving them unattended. Use a cup or low-pressure setting to keep your dog from swallowing or aspirating water. Create a lather with a shampoo specially formulated for your dog’s coat type and color.

We recommend a washcloth and medicated shampoo to “clean up the folds and get the yeast and bacteria out of there.” Scrub the coat in one direction, feeling around for any bumps or abrasions. If you go back and forth, you’ll break the hair shaft and make them break out.

Rinse the shampoo off, squeezing out excess water. Dry your dog thoroughly using a towel or a hairdryer on low heat. We suggest a leave-in conditioner if your dog has dry or flaky skin.

Grooming is important because dogs can end up with medical problems from not doing it.  Flat-faced dogs draw people in with their expressive eyes and abundant wrinkles. Keep these irresistible features in top shape with daily checking and cleaning.
