4 MINUTES – WILD ASS THEORY INCOMING

OK, there are so many theories about 4 Minutes floating around (including a couple of my own already out there). And now I'm adding another one to the mix, just for good measure. 🤣

But I really think there's something in this. Please bear with me...

This train of thought was sparked by the ending of Ep.4, when we saw Dome recovering fully in the hospital, cheerfully taking a taxi back home, and then (when he arrived) calling out to Ton Kla, who heard him.

But Dome then disappeared. And we were shown his cremation ashes instead.

OK listen, hear me out.

That was Dome all right, but it was his ghost that we saw returning home from the hospital, wearing white and blissfully unaware that he was already dead.

I think what 4 Minutes has been showing us thus far is an interplay, not so much of different timelines, but rather the different experiences of the living, the dead and those still in the Four-Minute Zone (who are caught between these two worlds in the four minutes from corporeal death to cessation of brain activity).

And we're not always being shown their experiences in chronological order, hence the confusing storylines for different characters that don't quite gel with each other's.

Anyway, that's why they're making such a big deal about the black and white:

When we see characters wearing white (as Dome was in his happy Ep.4 taxi ride home) there's a high chance that they're actually ghosts, re-living past experiences and re-visiting the what-ifs in their past lives had they chosen their paths (or had their paths been chosen for them) differently.

They don't know they're dead; they just know that reality has changed into a multi-pronged set of choices that they get to re-visit.

The people in black are most likely those who are in the Four-Minute Zone between life and death. And the people in normal clothing (prints, other colors) are those still in the realm of the living.

The ghosts (an idea also suggested by the 13:13 on Manee's hospital clock in Ep.1, see this write-up linked here) aren't usually visible in the real world, but they are visible to those in the Four-Minute Zone and can interact with them.

This is supported by Den's interviewee in Ep.1, who said she was surrounded by people in white during her own experience of consciousness after cardiac arrest.

As the ghosts aren't aware that they're dead, everything seems real enough to them. But then they also get to visit different realities and different outcomes (including being thrust four minutes back into the past to re-do things – and you probably know where this is going).

OK, so this also means (sadly) that:

Great is already dead (and so is his mom) – Great is always in white, and his mom was too at their Ep.5 shootout. The re-living past experiences and experimenting with different outcomes is something the ghosts get to do, and we see Great doing this all the time in 4 Minutes.

Korn is sometimes in white – this is his ghost re-living experiences after he was killed by Ton Kla (c'mon, you know death by Ton Kla was always going to be on the cards for him). He's also sometimes in black – that would be him when he was in the Four-Minute Zone, prior to his death and entry into the spirit world.

Lukwa is already dead; she's been recounting her experiences with the four-minute rewind to Den. This is also why she could meet Great in the Four-Minute Waiting Room for spirits (while both were dressed in white, BTW).

Win is also dead; when he went to stay with Ton Kla to "protect" him in Ep.4 (who does that?) he was wearing white, and this was probably just his ghost seeking out Ton Kla, as he did when he was still alive. Win was also in black in a couple of scenes, which were probably him re-living past memories in the Four-Minute Zone. I guess he really was killed by Ton Kla.

Tyme is still in the Four-Minute Zone, re-treading his tracks, and interacting with Great in spirit. Tyme is probably going to get sent back (which is what the corridor and the light-filled doorway of the trailer is signaling) while Great cannot, because he's already passed into the spirit realm. So it's Tyme who's using his four minutes to review his life up until the moment he was shot, and also to interact with Great one last time. And that four-minute countdown Great keeps seeing is simply a marker of the interlude that he gets to spend with Tyme before they are separated again.

Sweet-faced Ton Kla ("I've seen many murders" – girl, what were you doing at the devil's sacrament?) is a serial killer of some sort, and he probably killed Title and Win, just as he did his cat. And Korn is in his sights as well.

Ton Kla is one of the few living souls who can sense the dead (he sensed Dome's ghost in Ep.4, and he also saw the ghost of his dead black cat in Ep.1). So it's possible he was actually humping Win's ghost in Ep.4 (though I'd rather think it was just Win's ghost re-imagining another scenario).

Den is probably another human soul (unless he's also dead) who can not only sense the departed but also interact with them – his nonplussed reaction to Lukwa when she came in for an interview in Ep.1 wasn't just because of her beauty (she is so pretty isn't she? I have a bit of a crush going on) but because he could also tell she was a ghost, not a living human.

There you go. Have I taken it too far with my theories again? I'm hoping against hope that I'm wrong, and that Great and Tyme will have a happy ending after all.

But I'm not counting on it... 😥

P.S. This may be just a coincidence, but the broadcast schedule of 4 Minutes (26 July 2024 to 13 September 2024) very neatly encapsulates the Thai-Chinese Ghost Festival (wan saat jeen/วันสารทจีน) that runs during the seventh lunar month from 4 August to 2 September this year. In Chinese belief, ghosts are given free rein to roam the world of the living throughout this month, and I'm thinking that (if my theory holds true) 4 Minutes must have timed its release to coincide specifically for the additional spook factor. 😵

“Amor!! Finally!!”

“Pablo, why are you making an international call right now?”

“I can afford it. You have three seconds to explain to me why you haven’t been answering a single one of my FaceTime calls. I’ve been worried and, more importantly, bored out of my mind!”

You laughed lightly and relaxed back into the plush cushions of the hotel couch. You had forgotten that the last time you were out of Spain for filming was before you had met Gavi. Being on a successful HBO original came with a lot of perks, but also a lot of pain, both physical and emotional. You had joined the royal drama “Heavenly Bodies” in the middle of its first season, instantly being thrown into a love triangle between the two male leads. Viewers ate it up, creating theories and art (and ofc fan fiction) about you and your costars, foaming at the mouth to know what would happen next. The high demand lead to your current situation, where you were cooling off in a high hotel room overlooking Dubai, listening to your boyfriends complaints 2 months earlier than scheduled.

“I haven’t gotten any of them, Pablito. FaceTime is blocked here.”

You heard a loud scoff over the phone.

“If you are too busy to talk just say that, princesa. How could FaceTime be blocked in Dubai? That makes no sense!”

“Google it.” You retorted, laying back on the couch and cracking open a cold soda. You heard yells of “Ale! Google this for me!”, followed by a long pause.

“Oh wow. It is blocked.”

“See!” You yelled into the receiver, causing Gavi to complain about his sensitive eardrums. You sat back down, continuing what would probably be a very expensive phone call with your boyfriend. As you two talked, he sighed loudly, and you heard his body hit the couch.

“I miss seeing your face, princesa. Don’t get me wrong I love the sound of your voice, but it’s just different. Is there no way we can video call?”

You could basically hear the pout and puppy dog eyes in Gavi’s voice, and it made your heart swell. He was so enamored by you, so taken by the way you looked and spoke and laugh, that all he wanted was to once again cup your face in his hands and pull you in close enough to share his breathing space.

“Well, we could always just go on live together.”

“Huh?”

“Like do a live stream. On instagram or something. We would both be calling but there would just be other people there.”

Gavi paused once again, playing around with the idea in his mind.

“But what if I… want to say “not appropriate in front of people” stuff?”

“That’s what Snapchat is for.”

His laugh resounded through the phone, and you couldn’t help the large smile that squinted your eyes and filled out your cheeks.

“Okay, Vamos, let’s do it.”

You got onto instagram and started a live, inviting Gavi to join. Every one of your 10.5 million followers who has their notifications on started to pour in, the messages of “I love you 😍” and “hi from Brazil 🇧🇷” flying at unreadable speeds. Gavi’s end connected a second later, and the fans went mental. Gavi was beaming like the sun when the line connected, finally able to see your face again.

“Hello again, Amor. I missed that pretty smile.”

Your fans and Gavi’s were now in the chat trying to prevent a mass cardiac arrest incident.

You weren’t reading any of it thought. You were staring at Gavi who was staring at you, the two of you making idle conversation about your trip and your show and his upcoming matches. He looked at you with so much love and affection that it made you blush, turning you into a much more shy and cuddly mess than people were used to. The sexy and strong power couple were now just a bunch of teenagers giggling and kicking their feet on instagram live. A strand of hair fell in your face, and Gavi reached out to his phone before remembering he couldn’t sweep it from your eyes on a different continent.

“Princesa, from now on, no filming on location unless I can come.”

“Why Pablito? Can’t live without me?” You teased, expecting a sharp reaction.

“Correct. Im literally itching and shaking from withdrawal. I love you and miss you come back faster.”

The chat got so overwhelmed they crashed the live.

What is the character’s go-to drink order? Jay will order a 'highball' and the bartender knows to make him a glass of ginger ale with a fancy fruit stake. As for coffee he can't have caffeine or his heart WILL probably explode, so he sticks to chamomile.

What is their grooming routine? Like Daisy's, it's got seven thousand steps and a million different creams and balms and salves and so on, and that's all kept in the bathroom. He picked that habit up from...someone else. But on his vanity in the bedroom he just has his golden hairbrush. In case someone were to come in, wonder if he's vain, and see that golden brush and think "oh no he doesn't put too much thought into these things"...

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? Cars. Cars. Cars. More cars. He couldn't afford Hot Wheels as a kid so now he just buys the real thing. Funny enough, his daily driver is a stupid custom Tesla that he hates, but he would feel ungrateful if he didn't drive it into the ground because Elon Musk gave it to him in exchange for opening a twitter account. He barely tolerates the thing though. It doesn't sound like a car :((((((((((((( he like vroom vroom :((((((((((

Do they have any scars or tattoos? He and Daisy have matching tattoos, again very well hidden and tiny. His is a 'D' on his pinkie underneath his signet ring. It pulls double time for Dan and Daisy though...in case he ever forgets his bad decisions :///

Chapter 5: Fire!

Warnings: intense rescue, flying through fire, severe third-degree burns, smoke inhalation, cardiac arrest

When everything turns to chaos, Shadow is forced to make a difficult decision...

Background info that is not included (explains a missing chapter): As the hunt for Thomas’s missing brother continued, during another raid, a mysterious black-winged Falkry showed up and killed a bunch of Jackal guards that had attacked Shadow, Thomas, and Tanner in a surprise ambush. Without the stranger’s help, they would have lost the fight altogether. The Falkry came out of nowhere to help them, and then disappeared again without a trace. He had been wearing a hood, so no one had any idea who he was. But Shadow now had an intense interest in finding out who it was, the mystery thickening with every passing day. During the ambush, Thomas also discovered that Shadow has the ability to self-heal minor injuries by drawing on her reserve of magic.

   –A day or two after being rescued by the mystery Falkry…

   "Do you think you can search security cameras and satellite feeds to find the Falkry?" Shadow asked flatly.

   "I could do that," Thomas said smugly, "but first we are going to find my brother, just like you agreed to."

   She was clearly more interested in finding the other Falkry than in Thomas's brother, but she set aside those emotions for the moment.

   "Fine," she huffed. "We'll look for your brother first, then search for the Falkry second. Any idea on how to locate him?"

   As if on cue, Thomas's phone beeped with an incoming message. He pulled it from his pocket and stared at the screen in confusion, his brow furrowing.

   The message had been sent from an unknown number. Thomas had installed advanced, near impenetrable firewalls that he had created himself previously to prevent any nonessential calls or texts from coming through, which is why it was strange that one still managed to wriggle its way onto his phone regardless of his protections.

   He clicked on the text so that it filled the screen. There was a video attachment that had been sent. A message also came with it, displayed below the attachment. It was an address, followed by more information.

   1576 Maple Street, 67882.

   Come alone, or he dies. Tonight, Midnight.

   Thomas felt his heart drop to his stomach as he dreaded clicking the attachment after reading the words. He finally mustered up the courage and opened the video. A second later he gasped. On the screen was his brother, Lucas, tied to a chair in a nearly empty room. Shadow peered over his shoulder, her curiosity piqued by his reaction.

   "What is it?"

   "It's him... it's Lucas!"

   "Welp, that’s definitely a trap. You happen to be looking for him and coincidently Jackal gives you the chance to save him?" Shadow snorted, crossing her arms over her chest. “My guess is that you’ve become such a pain, that they're trying to lure you out to kill you and put a permanent end to the problems you keep causing for them.” She saw the expression on Thomas's face as he opened his mouth to say something, and cut him off with a shake of her head, already knowing exactly where it was headed.

   "No. That is a very stupid idea. We don't even know if they will keep their end of the bargain."

   "Come on, you know we're going there anyways. We can't take the chance that Jackal is not lying." Thomas looked up from his screen and met Shadow's eyes. She sighed in exasperation.

   "What part of 'it's a trap' did you not get?"

   "Whatever happens, I would do anything to save him. Even if it turns out to be a trap, at least I tried. Please, will you help me?" Thomas pleaded with her. He could see that he was starting to get under her skin when she stared hard at the floor, looking conflicted. A few long moments passed before she finally looked up again with a frustrated groan.

   "Ugh, fine. I'll come along. As backup only though, understand? I won't intervene unless I deem it absolutely necessary."

   "Thank you so much! I promise you won't regret it!" Thomas gushed.

   I’m already starting to, Shadow thought quietly to herself.

   It took a few hours for everyone to get prepared for what was to come at night. Thomas handed out earpieces to everyone so they could all easily communicate later.

   "All set?" Tanner asked Shadow. She was loading up a small bag with field supplies. Thomas saw her packing a pair of binoculars and a variety of deadly looking knives and blades.

   "Ooh! This looks like fun! Can I come too?" Roy walked excitedly into the room, sensing the electric vibe in the air.

   "Not this time. Sorry." Tanner blocked his path.

   Roy stepped back, looking hurt. "No, that's alright. I'll just... stay here then. All alone. With nothing to do but watch TV and eat popcorn." He dipped his head to his chest and looked at Tanner with sad eyes.

   "Ha. That’s cute, but guilt trips don't work on me,” Tanner laughed.

   "It was worth a try." Roy immediately perked up and was back to his usual, chipper self, dropping his act. "Good luck with whatever you guys are doing then!" He skipped out of the room happily to go back to playing video games and watching movies.

   Tanner turned back to the rest of his company. "Everyone ready?"

   "Ready," Thomas said, determination in his eyes. Shadow's only reply was a brief nod of acknowledgement as she tucked one last short dagger into her boot.

   "Great, let's move out!" Tanner led the way to the car.

   Shadow followed them out before she disappeared into the dark night with a whooshing sound as her wings propelled her into the crisp, chilly air.

   "Uh... isn't she coming too?" Thomas asked, confused.

   "Of course. She just prefers to fly instead of drive, remember? One bonus is that she won't have to deal with traffic. I expect that she will arrive at our destination a few minutes ahead of us. It will give her extra time to pick a decent hiding spot with a good vantage point," Tanner explained.

   "Hiding spot?" Thomas echoed, and raised an eyebrow quizzically.

   "Of course. We don’t want the general public seeing her, and we don't know what we are walking into. It's best to maintain the element of surprise, just in case."

   "Just in case what?" Thomas swallowed nervously as they started driving. Tanner didn't reply.

   In the backseat, Thomas thought of all possible scenarios as to how this could play out. Most of them ended in tragedy. They drove for fifteen long minutes before the car slowed to a stop as they reached their destination. 

   Thomas had butterflies in his stomach as he stepped out onto the sidewalk. His legs felt shaky beneath him. The night sky was solidly black, with only a few bright stars scattered here and there against the light-polluted background. It was midnight. Right on time.

   "This is the place?" Tanner asked skeptically.

   "Yes, this is the place." Thomas swallowed dryly. Before them stood a shorter than average skyscraper, located on the corner of the street. It was only ten stories tall. The two of them approached the building with caution. Thomas pulled out his phone, and texted the unknown number that had asked him to the address.

   I need proof of life.

   He didn't have to wait long. A live video link came through and Thomas clicked on it, his heart racing. In the video feed, he could see his brother still tied to a chair, clearly unconscious, his face bruised and various other wounds on his body, but alive nonetheless. There was another message attached to it.

   Third floor.

   It was all the proof he needed. He approached the doors and reached to grab the handle, but Tanner put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him.

   "Something's not right," he warned, then touched his comms with a wince. “Shadow still thinks this is the absolute worst idea in the history of bad ideas. Although she worded it a bit more… colorfully. Maybe we should take a step back to think this through."

   "No. I can't leave him in there. I won't," Thomas insisted, shaking his head vehemently.

   "Just... be careful. That's all I'm saying," Tanner added slowly, a worried expression on his face. "Shadow is in position on a nearby roof in case anyone tries to do something stupid. I'm already on a private channel with her."

   Thomas nodded nervously, then took a calming, shuddering breath, steeling his nerves, before entering the building.

   Meanwhile, from a rooftop across the street, Shadow lay in wait, staring through a pair of night vision binoculars. She scanned the skyscraper for activity, and finally found it on the third floor up.

   Gotcha, she thought to herself. Through the reflection on the window, she could see that Thomas's brother was indeed inside the structure. Jackal hadn’t lied about that much, at least. There appeared to be a tripod in front of him with a phone on it, which is how the video link must have been sent.

   But why is there no one else in the building to guard their prisoner?

   She felt a familiar tingle at the back of her neck as her gut told her that danger was near. And her warrior’s sense was rarely wrong. She scanned the other floors through the binoculars, and saw a strange box on the second one. There was a red digital readout above it, but it was too unfocused for her to read what it said. But Shadow didn't need to. She had seen this little black box before, and she knew exactly what kind of damage it could do.

   The box, she believed, contained what was known to her as a fire bomb. Fire bombs were a type of illegal weapon that had been banned in almost every country in the world, and few people knew anything about them. Where there was one, there were usually more, all connected to the same remote trigger, and placed in strategic areas to cause the most destruction.

   When detonated, it released a powerful, explosive jet of fire around a room, almost like a flamethrower, but twenty times stronger. It could set a whole building aflame in mere minutes, destroying everything inside. It was originally meant to be a means of assassination that was designed to look as though it were only a freak accident, to cover evidence.

   The damage left by a regular bomb is unmistakable, but the trail a fire bomb leaves is far more erratic, and anyone looking at the aftermath would naturally come to the conclusion that it was probably just an accidental gas explosion or another such cause. The fire bombs were generally placed on the lower levels, so that the fire would work its way upwards from the source point.

   He's walking into a death trap.

   "Tanner, you need to get him out of there right now!" Shadow barked into her comms. Tanner immediately sprung into action, not even bothering to question her reasoning as he rushed into the entryway, where Thomas hadn't even made it to the elevator. He grabbed the teen by the arm and started dragging him back towards the door to safety, while Thomas yelped in surprise and confusion.

   They had almost made it out when the bomb went off, completely engulfing six of the ten stories in flames. Tanner stumbled out into the fresh air, still maintaining a strong grip on Thomas.

   "No! Thomas cried, struggling to free himself from Tanner's iron grip as he saw the fire spread through the building. "I have to go back in! My brother is still in there! Please, you have to let me go!" He was near hysterical. Shadow could hear Thomas's pleas over her comms, and searched through her binoculars to try and relocate his brother. The fire effectively blocked her view.

   Bat-droppings! She swore silently. She knew that there was only one more possible option for saving Thomas's brother now, but the thought was daunting, even to her. And the realization sent a cold shiver running down her spine, and her white feathers bristled with apprehension.

   I am his only chance of survival.

   No, why am I even considering this right now? I can't fly through fire! She thought to herself angrily.

   Why should I care about some random human anyway? I hate them! Besides, I tried to warn the stupid boy anyway… It’s not MY fault it was a trap!

   She tried to talk herself out of it, but her conscience wouldn't let it go.

   You should care because you know what this kind of pain feels like, it told her. Thomas’s desperate voice had awakened a long buried, sad memory from her distant past.

   I remember… Shadow gritted her teeth and shut her eyes with a shudder. When she finally opened them again, they were filled with newfound resolve and determination.

   Forget this, I'm going in. I am such an idiot…

   “Tanner, get Thomas somewhere safe. I'll handle his brother," she growled through her earpiece. And with that, she reluctantly spread her great feathered wings and launched off the rooftop, heading on a straight course for the burning skyscraper.

   From the street below, Tanner could see what she was about to attempt. "Shadow, no!" He shouted into the comms, watching as she gained more speed, making a beeline for the third story.

   Up in the air, Shadow ripped her communications device out and threw it away.

   I need my full focus on the task at hand if I'm going to pull this off.

   The building came towards her with frightening speed, and at the last second before contact, she crossed her arms over her chest, ducking her head down and pulling her wings in tight against her body, turning herself into a speeding projectile. A feathery bullet.

   Well, here goes everything…

   Shadow forcefully smashed her way through the building's window with a loud crash, and it easily gave way upon impact, raining shards of glass onto the streets below. She rolled and skidded to a stop on the tiled floor, grunting as she pulled herself to her feet.

   "Not the most graceful entrance I could have made," she muttered under her breath. The fire raged all around, making it hard to see anything as she peered through the thick haze.

   Shoot, I forgot how flammable I can be, she thought with a shudder, and quickly snuffed out a small spark that had set one of her white feathers aflame. She started picking her way through the rubble consisting of burnt pieces of furniture and fallen down parts of the ceiling. The room was much larger than she had expected, and progress was slow.

   "Lucas?" She coughed. Her breath came harder as the hot air scorched the inside of her lungs. The sweltering heat was almost unbearable against her face, and her eyes began to water from the heavy, suffocating smoke.

   "Lucas, where are you?" Shadow reflexively jumped back as a large flaming beam came crashing down in front of her, narrowly missing her by mere inches, and slammed straight through the floor, leaving a giant hole in front of her.

   The fire roared furiously around the room, the searing heat stinging her skin as she continued her search.

   At this rate, I'll burn to death before I find the stupid kid.

   The room was gigantic, and visibility was at a minimum. She suddenly remembered a lesson a mentor had once taught her about slowing down and taking time to use her heightened senses, one of a Falkry’s greatest advantages.

Her eyes flew open and she suddenly began lashing out at the smoke before her with her large white wings, blowing it away in powerful strokes long enough for her to see the faint outline of a wingless human form through the orange haze, still tied to the chair. It was Lucas. It had to be.

   Found you. She quickly made her way over to him, navigating around all the hazards on the floor. Dozens of blisters covered his exposed skin from the immense heat, and his head hung loosely against his chest.

   He'd better not be dead right now or I am going to be seriously ticked off, she thought angrily. Shadow was relieved to feel a subdued, weak pulse beneath her fingers as she placed a hand against the side of his neck. He was only unconscious, probably having used the last of his strength in his last weak cry for help.

   He can't take much more of this. And I don’t think I can either…

   Coughing and wheezing, she drew a small dagger from her boot and freed him from the chair, slashing easily through his restraints, then carefully picked him up in her strong arms. Her chest and lungs ached for air, but the fire consumed so much of the oxygen, that there was very little left for two beings to breathe in. She was starting to feel lightheaded, and quickly became aware of how little time she had left to escape before she would risk passing out, which would be a certain death sentence. But when she turned around to make her exit, the flames had grown far more aggressive, blocking the hole in the window from where she had come crashing in.

   Great. As if the situation couldn’t get any worse, she thought sarcastically. There were only two choices available.

   Either I have to fly through fire, or be crushed when this building finally caves in.

   She chose the former. Holding Lucas close to her chest, Shadow braced herself and charged through the flames, beating her large wings furiously, and her feet lifted from the ground. She shot from the building like a bullet, trailing smoke from burning feathertips. She immediately veered steeply downwards into a near-vertical dive, heading for the nearby river that ran through the city, which was only a short distance away.

   Just a little further. I can make it. She released her grip on Lucas a single second before she went over the retaining wall at the edge and hit the water, so that he landed on solid ground, while she continued onward with a loud splash when contact was made. Her feathers sizzled as the flames were suffocated from lack of oxygen.

Hi all, 

so it isn’t looking good for Xeno so far. The enemas didn’t work to fix his insides and he’s still very subdued and generally unhappy. Surgery to clear out his bowels would not only be expensive but also have a high risk of cardiac arrest afterwards because of his heart disease that might not do well under anaesthesia. Even then, he didn’t have a long prognosis and might only last a few more months. 

I’m going to take him back tomorrow to hopefully do another round of enemas just in case, but if those don’t work that’s kind of it. Even those are going to cost me $150-200 after the last vet visit yesterday cost $320. 

I hate seeing him suffer like this but so far he’s bounced back really well after his previous procedures and was doing great otherwise and enjoying life and cuddles. I’ll talk to the dr about more options. 

on top of that, his inevitable euthanasia, whether I have to get it done this week or some time in the near future will have an additional cost. The vet hasn’t discussed with me how much that will be yet. I’m currently waiting to hear back on a job application but my temporary job is over and i have no more income.

Teenage school attacker kills teacher, injures five others in Brazil

A teenager has stabbed four teachers and two students at a public school in São Paulo, police say. Elizabeth Tenreiro, a 71-year-old teacher, died after going into cardiac arrest as a result of her wounds. The other victims were taken to a major public hospital.

The attacks began around 7:20 am at a school in Vila Sônia, a low-income neighborhood to the west of São Paulo city. The attacker is a 13-year-old student, authorities said. Education Secretary Renato Feder said the attacker “never reported any concerning behavior,” according to school staff. The motives behind the attack are still unclear.

According to local reports, episodes of violence between students were commonplace at the school.
