#carbuncle: tricky little fox

"Awww! You're such an adorable little guy!" *boops Carbuncle's snoot*

"Yip!" Carbie shouts surprised by the strange Anon booping their snoot. They jump back away from the anon.

Darious looks over at the anon. "They are cute, but you can't go booping their snoot like that. You need to give them some good pets first." He says.

Darious thanks Piers for the food, and happily eats it up alongside Carbie. "Mmm, this is really good! You stirred it up well." He says happily.

Carbie yips happily as well, nibbling away at the food given to them.

"It reminds me of the food I'd get at Limsa Lominsa's restaurants. It has a good texture too." He says reminiscing a bit.

Ah, part of the cooking process for this was changing the heat as is needed. Keeping it even seemed to be the deal here.

“Sure thing.” He says before he takes the fan. “Carbie, give a light wind on your side when you can okay?” He says to his little Carbuncle.

Carbie yips happily, and gets to the other side. They give light gusts of wind to help steady the flame and help keep the heat going. It was quite impressive as to how well were in sync for this.

Noticing how quickly the other caught on, he nodded and began to stir the food to ensure it cooked thoroughly without burning.

“Nice job there mates, nice an’ even heat. This’ll be a bang on gnash when it’s done I’m certain,” he said it with a little grin to his face.

From there it was pretty easy to manage thanks to the duo taking care of the heat. Honestly it might even make it to Copperajah class with how good they were doing. It idly occurred to him how in sync the pair were but then again they did seem to share a unique bond so perhaps this was normal for them? Piers wasn’t sure but he wasn’t going to judge them for it. Once the food is done he signals they can stop fanning the flames and he starts to plate up the food, laughing as his Pokemon begin to dance around trying to get at it.

“Oi, ya got ta wait ‘til it’s down in front of ya. Honestly, ya’d think I never feed ‘em with the way they act ‘round dinner time.”

He handed over a couple of plates to Darious for him and Carbie to eat from before he went to feed his own Pokemon, making sure everyone got their share before he even bothered to feed himself, a rather small portion by anyone’s standards but the musician didn’t seem bothered by this.

“Is this working? The red blinking light means it’s working right? Hellooooo?” An Au’ra says tapping on the camera lens of the device he looked into.

“It is working Darious. If it was not, it wouldn’t be showing the image on this side.” A deeper more experienced voice says.

“Oh awesome. Let it float, and come over here you two!” The Au’ra, Darious says smiling. A sigh from the other side as flapping over is a large dragon with a huge wingspan, and blue outlines along his body. Scampering up beneath the dragon was a small blue glowing fox like creature. The camera floats in the air and seems to change it’s focus to show them all as a whole.

The area around them was a large canyon like area, with cliffs and plauteaus surrounding the area. Some carts carried on by Chocobos pass in the far distance through a tunnel.

“Hello those watching in. coming in from the fields of Central Thanalan! I’m Darious. This is Bahamut-” He says gesturing to the dragon. “-and this is Carbuncle!” He continues gesturing to the little fox. “And we’re just...traveling I guess. That’s kinda it...man this sounded cooler in my head.” He says with a shrug.

“May we move on now? I believe we have more important things to be doing.” Bahamut says, while the little Carbuncle yips. Whether in agreement or not is hard to say.

“Alright, alright. Let’s go. Either way, if anyone’s watching, now ya know who we are. Laters.” Darious says as he and the others walk off.

Leif is throwing ice and freezing the wasps while looking for the Shaman. Or at least the Wasp in charge. He pauses when he sees another Wasp step out from behind a group and resists the urge to rub at his temples in annoyance. It would be this particular moth wouldn’t it.

There stood General Ultimax but he looked slightly different, much more foreboding after all, “you may have stopped me before but not this time… The great Hoaxe shall come back!” He starts to rally the wasps to be more unified in their attacks.

The moth had to deflect more attacks coming from the wasps now but knocking them back still best he can, “that would be the one we want! He was Hoaxe’s righthand man.”

“Ah, obvious target in hindsight. Well, to focus fire!” Darious says as he faces him. “Get that Energy Flowing!” He shouts before casting Energy Flow and taking energy from Ultimax. “And let your sins fester in your heart!” He cries out and casts two Festers at him as well. Not the most damaging means, but quick and efficient. “Let rain the ruin of Topaz!” He cries out before 4 bursts of Earthen magic shoot out from glyphs in the air and slam into Ultimax.

“Let’s lay into him!” Vi shouts focusing down on Ultimax as well.

“You all attack him from where you stand! I shall make sure none get near you!” Kabbu cries and fights valiantly.

Carbie jumps up and over and around until they reach Ultimax and slash at him with Topaz Claws.

Darious looks about the town. This place was...new to him. Everywhere he looked about there was a type of bug. Ants, bees, more ants-no wait, that one was a Mantis. And they are also quite colorful too, and also varied in body shape. Frankly he stuck out like a sore thumb.

Either way the one that caught his attention the most was a blue moth looking guy. So naturally he approaches him and taps him on the shoulder. "Hey there. I'm kinda lost. What is this place?" He asks.

Feeling the different magic and calmness spreading over him was a great help. It helped him to focus a bit more steadily on the task at hand. Right. He could do this. 

“We have an idea that should separate them.”

Thank Venus they had all placed the technology into one area. The moth flared out his wings as he summoned up a particularly large and thick wall of ice between the Wasps and the sources of magic. It had drained him a bit to do so but it had succeeded given the unanimous cry of rage from the Wasps.

“That should hold for quite a while to buy us time so we can focus on them now.”

Quickly the moth sucked down a Honey Drop to restore his reserves and sighed in relief. Well it had succeeded in drawing the attention of the Wasps to the group if anything. Ah well, better than them summoning Hoaxe again in his opinion.

“We have to be quick. Find the one who looks like a shaman and take him out. So long as he’s up, they can still complete the ritual!” Darious calls out as he summons Carbuncle again. “Carbie, execute Emerald Crescent! Blow them away!” Darious calls out as Carbie suddenly turns Emerald green. Then, they shoot out a blade of wind from their tail at once of the wasps, knocking them into the wall.

“Get rid of them you fools!” One of the wasps calls out as the other wasps rush the group.

Kabbu stands in front and begins knocking them back with his horn. “You will not summon that horrid bug again!” Kabbu cries out.

“Yeah! Once was way more than enough!” Vi says throwing their boomerang around and knocking them upside the head.

Darious looks about the town. This place was...new to him. Everywhere he looked about there was a type of bug. Ants, bees, more ants-no wait, that one was a Mantis. And they are also quite colorful too, and also varied in body shape. Frankly he stuck out like a sore thumb.

Darious wasn’t sure what that was about with Carbie and Obstagoon. But since he didn’t have something like the Scions’ special goggles or Y'shtola’s aether vision, he probably wouldn’t be able to figure it out right now anyway.

Either way he follows Piers over to the pot where they were cooking. Ah, it reminded him of the time he tried his at the culinarian guild. He actually isn’t too bad about cooking. So when Piers asked which to use he thought for a moment. “The sausages.” He says.

The rocker tried to put away the thoughts racing in his mind about the strangeness that just happened. Instead he nodded to say he understood the choice and popped the sausages in as well. He then started up the fire and held out a fan to Darious while holding his own.

“So we got ta fan the flames ‘til their hot enough before we stir the curry continuously.”

Piers then began to fan, the flames steadily beginning to grow as he did so.

Carbie sniffs it. For a moment, the den felt off and strange, but as soon as the two were looking more closely at it, the bizarre vibe that the den gave off simply vanished. Carbie tilts their head confused, before bounding back over to Darious, and sitting on his shoulder.

“Sure. I’m pretty good with any kind of food, spicy or otherwise! Do you need any help making it?” Darious asks as he gets up.

Piers did look back over to the den at the feeling, especially when Obstagoon began to growl lowly. He stared at it for a while and when the feeling went away and his Pokemon calmed and Carbie came back over he calmed and turned his attention back to Darious.

“Sure. I’ll show ya how to do it and ya can hop in and help.”

The rocker walked back over to the pot he’d had set up before before unleashing all his Pokemon again so they could play and socialize before dinner. Obstagoon instantly went over to rough house with Scrafty while Toxtricity and Malamar watched. Skuntank sat near the pot as if trying to be first in line for the food.

Once that was done he put all the ingredients into the pot before turning back to Darious, “which do ya want? Pasta or sausages?”

Leif listened to everything as he ate, enjoying the flavors as they complimented each other. It had been a very good choice. Then he hums in thought while looking to Darious and then to his team, specifically Kabbu. 

“Don’t forget that Team Maki and Team Slacker are indeed incredibly powerful. They would be able to defend the kingdom should we be unable. Besides, we wouldn’t be permanently leaving, merely exploring as is our job.”

The moth seemed more settled about the idea of potentially leaving to see Eorzea. Of course he did worry about how a land filled with magic would affect him personally but he didn’t want to let that be a deterrent. He takes another bite of egg while thinking. Once he finishes that bite he hums softly before speaking, “aside from that, should the Ascians actually be after Bugaria it would be wise to seek information from a land that knows of them better right? At the moment, even with Darious’ aide we know nothing.”

“Oh yeah. Like, my friend Urianger? He’s way more well versed in how Ascians work than I am.” Darious explains as he finishes eating. “Ah, thanks for the meal. So, where do we go from here?” He asks.

“We make for the Wasp’s Kingdom to inform them of this new foe.” Kabbu states as he finishes as well.

“Let’s get it done quick ya know? We still got let the Ant Kingdom know after this!” Vi says.

Carbie yips and hops on Darious’ shoulders. They look Darious in the eyes, like they’re communicating, before Darious nods.

“When we’re in a private place, there’s something I wanna show you three.” He says to them.

Leif nods and looks to Vi, “we should remain cautious as Kabbu says. Even beating Hoaxe was difficult if you recall. However it will be needed to fight at our all should it come to that.” 

The moth then looks to Darious and nods, leading the group out of the throne room and to the elevator once more. While normally he wasn’t the one to take the lead it wasn’t that far to the Wasp Kingdom and they thankfully wouldn’t have to go through the horrid swamp again so he didn’t mind. As they ride down he lets his thoughts wander and one hand goes to gently rest on his chest. His true self was rather tightly wound up right then and it was getting painful. 

“Perhaps before we go we can stop by Crispbee’s and get something to eat. We must admit that dealing with all this has made us hungry.” And it would be a nice momentary distraction. 

“Oh yeah, we haven’t eaten yet, and I’m starving! Race ya there!” Vi says as he runs off ahead.

“Vi, do not run off without us like that!” Kabbu says before sighing and then running off after her.

Darious chuckles at this. “You’ve got some fun friends. Reminds me of my time back home. Always running around with other adventurers like me. Fighting, laughing, sharing stories over a good meal.” He says before looking at Leif. “If you want, I wouldn’t mind sharing some stories about the places I’ve been.” He adds with a smile

The moth nodded as he listened to Darious speak about the Ascians needing to recharge. That was good. Hopefully it would give them a chance to maybe get a plan in action. And as the Au’ra explained about the new threat to the realm. He would pipe in to confirm having sensed the strange power as well and how the child had collapsed after but was stable and being cared for. 

“This is certainly concerning. Thank you for telling me about this you two. I would recommend going to the Wasp Kingdom to tell Queen Vanessa as well before you go back to the Ant Kingdom. It would be helpful for her to be prepared given what’s happened before.”

Leif nodded in agreement before looking to where the Carbuncle was sadly looking. Something felt like it was tickling the back of his mind but he couldn’t place exactly what it was. Trying to not get overwhelmed by all these new things happening he looks to Vi and Kabbu, “we will likely still have to fight though Vi.”

“Yeah! We can fight these guys no problem! We beat this sort of stuff before, we can do it again!” Vi proclaims.

“We must not be careless though. I think our new companion may be able to share some more tactics on facing them.” Kabbu states.

Darious seems to look to where Carbie did, and is quiet for a moment, before he nods. He then turns to back to the Queen and bows to her. “Very well. We shall head for the Wasp Kingdom for Queen Vanessa 1st then.” He then turns to the other three. “If you don’t mind, would you lead the way there?” He asks them.

Leif couldn’t help but smile at the interactions of his other teammates. He was glad to be in their company again. He looks to Darious as he speaks and hums softly in thought. 

“So it’s detrimental on both sides hm? We cannot understand what would compel them to act thusly then using a child as before. Unless it was merely to ensure that you were here in this world.”

But if that was the case, then why had the Ascian directly spoken with him? It certainly made him wary and set off alarm bells but he was drawn from those thoughts by Vi and he can’t help but chuckle, “we do not know what they are either but we find it cute.”

However, he drops that topic when they get before the queen who looks to them with open curiosity, “what brings Team Snakemouth to my throne this day? Is it the strange being you have at your side?”

Leif, amazingly, is the one to speak up first, “he is involved yes your majesty in a good way thankfully. He can explain it better than us but we will vouch for the information having seen the new threat he’s about to describe with our own eyes.”

“That or because they know they can get close to me when disguised as children. That, and I never thought they’d do that, but I really should have expected it. Either way, they won’t come back for a while as they recharge in a place called the Aetheric Sea.” Darious explains, before they arrive at the queen. He does a polite curtsy of respect. “Greetings your highness. I am Darious Dunka. Please, allow me to fully explain the threat Leif speaks of.” He says. Then he explains all he can about the Ascians, from their immortality, to their main objective.

“So, we just gotta beat them up and keep them out of here then!” Vii says determined.

“I do not think it will be so simple Vii.” Kabbu says a bit exasperated.

Carbie looks off above Darious, as if there’s something there, but it’s not reacting like it’s a danger. Rather, Carbie looks sadly at it, whatever the invisible force is.

Leif nods, glad that Kabbu felt the same way about the presence of the a dark being so similar to Hoaxe. 

“We had thought the same, also the power this Ascian emitted is the same as Hoaxe as well. It is why we must inform everyone about what is happening. If they are here to target this world it is best to be prepared.”

The moth shook their head before leading everyone towards Queen Bianca’s throne room.

“You’re right Leif. Who knows what unspeakable evil such fiends might be planning right now?” Kabbu says as he and Vii follow the moth, with Darious not far behind.

“One of the things you’ll wanna know, is that Ascians usually add their magic to the abilities of those they possessed. Thankfully, possessing also takes an enormous amount of energy on their end. So they’re not likely to possess unless they’re certain they can use whoever they do so to the fullest advantage.” Darious explains as they walk.

Vii looks at Carbuncle weirdly, who yips happily. “Okay, are we seriously not gonna question this glowy guy here?” She asks.

“It’s not important right now Vii.” Kabbu says to her. Vii hmphs, and looks at the happy Carbuncle like it’s just the weirdest thing here.

Soon they reach the throne room where the queen is waiting.

“We do not know if our world has anything called Source but Hoaxe certainly did almost cause a calamity. He sought immortality and would do anything and hurt anyone get such a thing. His own kingdom was pushed into poverty to further his goals. And the power he wielded was stronger than any we’d ever seen.” Leif spoke it bitterly as he recalled all the chaos the Eternal Sapling caused for all of bugkind. He sighed to calm himself before blinking at hearing the yipping. Looking over he visibly relaxes at the sight of not one but both teammates. So they were safe. It was an immense weight off his shoulders to know that the bee and beetle were okay. Detouring from his initial destination the moth heads over to the other two.

“Vi, Kabbu, we did not realize your jobs would take you to the Hive as well. We would like to introduce you to Darious. We’ve been tasked to help him find his way while he’s in Bugaria. And… Something else has popped up that we must inform the queens about at once.”

Vii looks over at Darious with Kabbu and looks shocked. “Whoa, this guy looks weird! What kind of-!”

“Not a bug, I’m an Au’ra, and it’s a pleasure to meet you two.” Darious cuts them off. “Sorry for cutting you off there, but I’m a little high strung at the moment.” He says before explaining what he did to Kabbu.

“By the Queen, to think such dark beings exist even in other worlds. It sounds no different than Hoaxe!” Kabbu says.

“We gotta let everyone know about these guys! We don’t want anyone like them showing up around here!” Vii says arms flailing.

“…. The power they possess… It feels so very similar to Hoaxe… He’d overthrown the wasp queen to become their king and even managed to make almost all the wasps hostile. We never understood where his power came from or how he did it.” Leif sighed softly and looked to the tunnel before shaking his head and leading the way up the steps towards the Hive’s elevator.

“We don’t know if he was possessed like this child by your Ascians but it would explain a few things if so. If they are however behind Hoaxe’s powers then we worry for our team members as well as our team was the one to stop Hoaxe and kill him eventually. We should tell Queen Bianca about this first since we are here already. It will save us traveling back and forth needlessly.” He stepped onto the elevator and actually hoped that Vi was here potentially visiting her sister. It would settle his rising anxieties at least a little.

“It depends on a few things. Chaos is their game, but they have a goal in mind for it.” Darious says as he rides the elevator with Leif. “Their goal is to cause Calamites that bring about the Rejoining. Which is where they destroy whole worlds, and when they’re gone they ‘rejoin’ with a main world called the Source. It’s a lotta complicated magic stuff, so unless this world is a shard of the Source, it’s highly unlikely they were involved. Though, whether it is or not, I can’t say. All I know is, they’re dangerous, and likely will cause problems on purpose.” He continues to explain.

Soon they reach the top and outside the elevator talking to the other bees on a job their own, are Vi and Kabu. They haven’t yet noticed Leif has arrived here. Carbie yips as they see the pair, pointing them out to Leif. They smelled like Leif and all, so they thought Leif knew them.

Leif meanwhile had his ice at the ready incase the child-not-child were to attack. It was confusion and ever bit of his fluff was standing on end. This being was dark and powerful. It felt like Hoaxe all over again actually. That kind of power and darkness lurking within a single bug. The moth tried hard not to shake at the memory of those encounters. Instead he watches the events take place and immediately rushes over as well. Wait, that was… Possession? It shook an uncomfortably familiar chord with him but he merely nods.

“Of course we can, hurry, this way.” 

It was good they were in Defiant Root actually. Quickly the moth leads the group to Isau. Naturally the doctor jumped at the sudden intrusion but before she could even ask Leif is speaking again, “this child needs medical attention. Something happened to them. Our companion can explain in better terms what happened and needs to be done.”

The butterfly, while flustered, does nod and moves quickly to prepare a bed for her rather unexpected patient.

Thankfully, they have no wounds or the like.” Darious says. He then begins reaching through his pouch. “I might have something in my bag to help. If you have anything else though, I recommend using it while I search my bag.” He says

Darious looks about the town. This place was...new to him. Everywhere he looked about there was a type of bug. Ants, bees, more ants-no wait, that one was a Mantis. And they are also quite colorful too, and also varied in body shape. Frankly he stuck out like a sore thumb.

Either way the one that caught his attention the most was a blue moth looking guy. So naturally he approaches him and taps him on the shoulder. "Hey there. I'm kinda lost. What is this place?" He asks.
