2. thoughts on veganism?

I could rant for a while about veganism and the harm its done for the nutrition and self-esteem issues that it perpetrates in those who are hardcore believers in veganism as well as the environmental impacts it has, but I'll try to keep this as short as possible and say that I really don't like the vegan movement as a whole. It's almost completely unsustainable, entirely unhealthy for the majority of the population, and more harmful for the planet than eating meat ever could be. Its carbon footprint is enormous because everything vegan has to be shipped vast distances to its main audience and anything labeled "faux" (faux fur, faux leather, etc) is just plastic, which is worse for the environment than fur or leather (both of which will last for far longer than shitty plastic knock-offs). As a dietary craze, I despise veganism (like I despise all fad diets) and I think anyone considering a vegan diet should have a very long conversation with a nutritionist before even attempting it.

3. a specific color that gives you the ick?

I don't like most shades of orange or yellow and I'm very particular about the shades of pink that I like. I'm definitely more drawn to the cooler side of the color wheel, though I love a good red.

4. mythical creature you think/believe is real?

I want to say ghosts but I feel like that's the easy answer so I'll say Mothman. It's less of a belief and more of a hope tbh; Mothman is my favorite cryptid and I really do hope that he's out there somewhere causing havoc and flying into light posts. I would be terrified to see him in person, but the idea of him is very cute.

7. what animal do you look forward to seeing when you visit an aquarium?

All of them!! Aquariums are my favorite places in the world! I have a running, ranked list of every aquarium I've ever visited and I always look up aquariums to visit whenever I travel. My personal favorite are the big ocean tanks; I love any tank that I can sit in front of and completely forget that I'm in an aquarium at all. The Georgia Aquarium has a magnificent ocean tank that has two whale sharks and a glass tunnel through it, so it's very firmly at the top of my list.

14. do you think you’re dehydrated?

I don't think I'm dehydrated, I know I am... I spent the last three days at the beach drinking sea water instead of fresh water (on accident, I promise lmao) and I haven't fully recovered

15. rank the methods of death: freezing, burning, drowning

drowning, burning, freezing. Drowning is the fastest (I think, don't quote me on that lol), freezing is the slowest. All three are terrible ways to die and I'm terrified of all of them.

18. your boba/tea order?

I usually play around with my boba order everywhere I go (especially if they have specials, I usually go for one of those) but I tend towards fruit teas with popping pearls instead of tapioca pearls. I don't like the texture of tapioca in my mouth (literally makes me gag) and I'm lactose intolerant so milk teas do unspeakable things to my digestive system. If possible, I also get my boba with less ice because it makes eating the popping pearls a lot easier.

25. would you say you have good taste in music?

I don't know anyone who would say no to this... if you don't like your own taste in music, listen to different music lol

28. last meal on earth?

There's a chef who cooks at a restaurant in Emerald Isle, NC called Clawson's and I'd eat anything that came off of his grill. Genuinely the best meal I've ever had and I would do just about anything to go back and order off of his menu again. I don't care what he'd make; I'd eat it for my last meal and leave this life satisfied.

1) the pale is a hyperobject that 2) represents the continuous present.

I saw a post earlier about what the pale is meant to be and what it’s doing within DE, and this is the best I could come up with, working off my own memory of my own thoughts while playing DE. I might try to make this coherent at some point (maybe after a re-play, so I can refer to quotes from the actual text) but tbh I just needed to get it out of my brain.

how is the pale a hyperobject? what does that mean?

in-game, the pale is referred to as the memories of the past, conglomerated into one entity. while this can (and should) be taken literally, you could argue that the pale is performing an allegorical function — this is SFF, after all. the problem with reading the pale is that it seems to act in many capacities at once. it can be read as a representation of climate change or colonial violence or nuclear fallout or refugee crises, etc., in that the pale is any and all world-ending by-products of human existence. I would argue that it is meant to be manifold — the game supports these varied readings; the pale is not a one-to-one allegory, but rather it performs the role of all given apocalyptic scenarios. it simultaneously acts as the threat of looming disaster (spreading over the ocean and encroaching on the isolas), the threat of disaster-from-within (the hole tearing itself open in the nightclub/church), and the threat of personal destruction (The Paledriver and Joyce being permanently changed by the pale). 

notably, all of these threats interact with the concept of borders. the pale erases both exterior and interior boundaries that humans within DE otherwise rely on to act as agents of the world. if we look at Latour’s definition of objects — which situates being as a state of relation between objects — the pale’s ability to infiltrate, ignore, or otherwise consume borders means that it cannot function as an object because it has no singular relationship to other objects. thus, the hyperobject, which Morton describes as adhering to the following properties:

“Molten: Hyperobjects are so massive that they refute the idea that spacetime is fixed, concrete, and consistent.

Nonlocal: Hyperobjects are massively distributed in time and space to the extent that their totality cannot be realized in any particular local manifestation. For example, global warming is a hyperobject that impacts meteorological conditions, such as tornado formation. According to Morton, though, objects don't feel global warming, but instead experience tornadoes as they cause damage in specific places. Thus, nonlocality describes the manner in which a hyperobject becomes more substantial than the local manifestations they produce.

Phased: Hyperobjects occupy a higher dimensional space than other entities can normally perceive. Thus, hyperobjects appear to come and go in three-dimensional space, but would appear differently to an observer with a higher multidimensional view.

Interobjective: Hyperobjects are formed by relations between more than one object. Consequently, objects are only able to perceive to the imprint, or "footprint," of a hyperobject upon other objects, revealed as information. For example, global warming is formed by interactions between the Sun, fossil fuels, and carbon dioxide, among other objects. Yet, global warming is made apparent through emissions levels, temperature changes, and ocean levels, making it seem as if global warming is a product of scientific models, rather than an object that predated its own measurement.”

so the pale fits pretty well into these requirements. once taken as a hyperobject, we can then view the pale as an embodied disruption of the ecosystems within de, a radical imposition of an entity that is not a backdrop for human drama but a conscious threat. 

ok. now to the continuous present. 

so much of DE is choosing to want the world you live in and recognizing the worth of living in the present moment, despite who you are, who you've been, and how you're changing. this thesis is presented in opposition to the constant yearning for the past (the comforting toxicity of nostalgia) and the breathless anticipation of the future (the giddy anxiety of looming disaster). “one day I will return to your side” & “something beautiful is going to happen” — two seemingly incompatible mindsets, but when we consider the hyperobject, we can see that they are combined and embodied within the pale. this collapsing of past and future into one symbol is not meant to confuse us, but to rather demonstrate how the pale is the continuous present.

Stein describes reality, and therefore the continuous present, as composition: “The only thing that is different from one time to another is what is seen and what is seen depends upon how everybody is doing everything. This makes the thing we are looking at very different and this makes what those who describe it make of it, it makes a composition, it confuses, it shows, it is, it looks, it likes it as it is, and this makes what is seen as it is seen. Nothing changes from generation to generation except the thing seen and that makes a composition.” the pale, acting as a hyperobject, is a collection of compositions. it is the embodiment of a continuous present because it holds all of humanity's past, all memory, alongside humanity’s inevitable future, which is to say, it represents human history.

putting this alongside the thesis I proposed, the notion of the present has become complex and somewhat irritating. Harry's individual relationship to the present is about how he comes to terms with his own personhood; the pale, representing a collective relationship to the present (past memory) as ecological disruption (future apocalypse), seems antithetical to the hopeful elements of the game while simultaneously corroborating the destructive elements of Harry's personhood. this is because violence leaves scars that last forever, and also, the world is ending. there is nothing Harry can do about it. there is nothing anyone in DE can do about it. 

so why is our thesis about the value of living in the present, and what is the distinction between the individual’s present moment and the continuous present? 

DE is not about doing something to stop or change the continuous present; DE is about the creation of personhood in an age that actively dissuades and breaks down personhood (through violence and poverty and substance abuse and so on — everything embodied in the destructive elements of the pale). DE is about a human's ability to engage with the world despite the breakdown of agency. 

Stein says, of art being made in the European modern period, “in this way at present composition is time that is the reason that at present the time-sense is troubling that is the reason why at present the time-sense in the composition is the composition that is making what there is in composition.” to demystify her point somewhat: composition is the individual’s present moment, and it is also the art that the individual makes to reflect the present moment. if the present is a terrifying place to live, then our reflection of the present will be troubling. if our only means of understanding the present is troubling, despair becomes a feedback loop — this is the troubled time-sense. characters in DE look to substances, religion, and the pale itself to escape this loop, not recognizing that escape is impossible when these avenues are the means by which agency is given up or broken down.

the individual’s present moment is only one composition within the larger framework of the continuous present. being alive in the world of DE naturally contributes to the pale; being human contributes to the accumulation of the past and the acceleration towards the apocalypse; there is no fundamental difference, then, between the present moment and the continuous present, between humanity and the pale. 

so WHY is our thesis about the value of living? why does playing DE feel like a manifesto of hope rather than despair?

what the pale ultimately represents is our troubled time-sense, embodying all the factors that have made the present a terrifying place to live — it is a continuous present that, when confronted, drives the individual to despair. DE’s answer to this wicked problem is similar to the one Stein posits here, “The composition is the thing seen by every one living in the living they are doing, they are the composing of the composition that at the time they are living in the composition of the time in which they are living. It is that that makes living a thing they are doing.” or, in troubling times, make art. create compositions that, yes, then become the composition in which you live, but that also give you personhood. introduce yourself to the world for the brief time you have. resist being consumed by the pale. resist self-destruction. at the individual level, creating art is the only way to maintain a sense of agency, which then allows you to contribute meaningfully to the present — which is all the time you have.

they say it's a privilege to be bored. i still don't get why LOL.

it's still me-- your tired (100% bc of my current job), silly, emotional, edgelord who's once again turning into writing as a form of therapy. therapy whomst? i have tumblr and my english words...thing. anyway, it's already april aka my birth month! bc i wanna look tsundere or sound like one, i keep on telling people to not really give my birthday that much importance but on the contrary, i really look forward to it that i pretty much chill for the entire month. i really don't want anything else as a gift (bc minimalism, duh!) so that's good. my bf gave me a coach bag and i had asked my mom to pay 2k for the bdo cc for this month so uhh, yeah. i have nothing more to ask for. at 25, i honestly am not looking forward to doing more things (bc i get easily tired of it, be it hobbies, etc.) but i think i'd like to learn more about myself and really take it slow. tbh as of writing, i still don't know what i'd like to do in life. earning money is nice but thinking of something else i'd love to do (perhaps for the rest of my life) that could also be a form of income is hard and terrifying. for me, at least. i am also having second thoughts about college bc lol i already earn decent (??) money so why should i even bother going back? it only looks good on paper imho LMAO. but let me think about it again. also just to praise myself (praise kink LMFAO i'm embarassing) i think i've somewhat managed how to do household chores apart from cooking, which i am yet to explore. atleast i finally got something right LMAO. for my 25th birthday, i would love to find my purpose in life. i've been doing it for the past years but i really can't seem to know. who am i even? another sorta jumping off prompt abt Billions In Full: thinking abt any & all instances of taylor's arcs having kinda Becoming Adrift or Struggling w A Quandary points that resolve into Turning Points & any such moments you might have especially had Thoughts Or Feelings abt in full context & knowledge of the series? a la navigating axe cap & axe's guidance vs their qualms in s2, the fancy watch saga, everything re douglas, anything re wendy, having plans to leave across s3, that kind of concept

hmm okay what Moral Quandary arcs do they have. let’s consider it

1. the sandicot fiasco (2x04-2x07): if you don’t count playing in the alpha cup / breaking krakow as a moral quandary (which taylor might, tbh) this is the first time they have to grapple with their principles. taylor is in on this from the beginning, researching the likelihood of sandicot getting a gambling license at axe’s request and telling axe there’s no reason to invest if they don’t get the license. when the license falls through, taylor is brought into the war room figuring out how to recover axe cap’s investment, and spells out both the repercussions of austerity and the reasons they think it’s the right choice. (people living in poverty? offensive. cities overreaching their budgets? MORE offensive, apparently.) mostly i find this arc boring & embarrassing to watch (libertarianism? in taylor? cringe), rather than compelling, but i’m still distraught over taylor telling axe “i find myself thinking in your words sometimes” in 2x05. (the words in question are “shit hole,” re: sandicot, which doesn’t help.)

2. the klaxon short (2x09-2x11): this actually starts out totally unrelated to taylor — dollar bill tells axe about klaxon, a company he is Not Uncertain will crash; axe hesitates to make this trade on inside information but decides to go for it. ben kim and mafee both fail to produce analysis that supports the short; taylor manages it because they analyze the situation from a different angle, and because they suspect axe has inside information supporting a short and just needs it to seem legitimate. coming up with this analysis, and signing off on it, gets taylor a promotion, a spontaneous bonus ($500k!) from axe, and thank-you money ($250k!) from dollar bill, but they’re conflicted enough about it to stop by the SDNY and find out what connerty knows first; seeing their signature on the report puts them under even more suspicion from connerty. this is the first arc that really Feels like a moral compromise for taylor, because they’re more obviously conflicted about it and get more material rewards for it.

3. their stance on fossil fuels (2x09-present): less a character arc than a character sinusoid. taylor’s reluctant to take a private jet given the carbon footprint, but axe insisting it’s fine if they buy some carbon offsets is enough to change their mind. they pitch ESG to grigor, an oil oligarch, as an act of sabotage because they don’t want axe cap to take his money, but they’re willing to take his money for mase cap, and to win over a sovereign wealth fund that gets its money from oil. they still somehow have an environmentalist reputation to preserve after all this, so they short fracking publicly and bait axe into legalizing fracking so they��ll profit privately. then from 5x03 onward, they’ve committed firmly to the Earth-Positive Approach, which somehow encompasses both convincing colleges to divest from fossil fuels and investing in fossil fuels themself while vowing to clean up the companies responsible. i don’t think this is taylor’s principles shifting so much as their commitment to those principles weakening when they’re in new and dire straits — torn between their personal and professional lives, desperate to break away from axe cap and make it on their own, or reeling from a rift in their family. in contrast, season 5 is about taylor (and everyone else) trying to get back on track & clean up the wreckage of their past choices — makes sense that it would include recommitting to the environmentalist approach. so i also have to wonder where it’ll go in the rest of season 5 — will mase carbon and its mission survive that long, or will some unforeseen crisis derail it?

4. having nice things (2x09-present): pretty much every instance of taylor purchasing some new & pricey thing accompanies another moral quandary, rather than the purchase itself being the only thing taylor’s torn about. for instance: reserving a flight on a private jet, as mentioned, while conflicted about the ethics of doing so and of Living Large more generally; signing the lease on a luxurious penthouse apartment after signing off on the klaxon short; buying the same $164k watch craig heidecker wore to quell their guilt over having profited from his death and wearing it every day, only taking it off when they’ve formally left axe cap and resolved to do business at mase cap The Right Way. similarly, though it’s never addressed in the show, i’m pretty sure taylor’s apartment in season 5 is a different, cheaper apartment than the one they rented in seasons 2-4 — the front door and interior layout we see in 5x02 are totally different from what we’ve seen before — and that this is another manifestation of taylor trying to get back on track / recommit to their principles in season 5. (it might also be that their income was reduced just a bit by mase cap crashing and burning and being forced back to axe cap and they decided to relocate to save on rent. multiple things can be true at once.) the only exception that comes to mind is axe offering to buy taylor a land rover to thank them for running axe cap: taylor turns it down, asks for a billion dollars of their own to manage, then changes their mind and asks for the car too once axe says yes to the billion. they’re not really in a moral quandary in that moment so much as a “wow it sucks that axe is taking the reins of axe cap back from me and undoing all my hard work, i’d like to have some semblance of control and power still, please” quandary, and we never see the land rover again after that, so it’s not exactly memorable. i still want to know what they did with it.

5. selling out oscar’s investment to axe (3x10-5x06): i would not count this as a moral quandary because i firmly believe that Taylor Did Nothing Wrong (in this case), but the 3x10 episode summary describes this incident as “taylor makes a personal compromise for business,” so i guess we have to consider it. taylor asks axe for a favor involving oscar and his business partner, then thanks axe for the favor and mentions the name of said business partner, as one might do when conversing with a trusted colleague / mentor. axe, who is scrounging for cash and should never be trusted, swipes the deal oscar was making; when taylor confronts him about it, he insists that they wanted him to swipe the deal, or else they wouldn’t have namedropped the business partner. it’s unclear whether or not taylor believes this / blames themself for what happened, but oscar certainly blames them — he refuses taylor’s offer of a conciliatory dinner in 3x12 because “after what you did, i could never open myself up to you again,” and tells the marithane ceo in 5x06 that taylor solving his patent issue actually proves just how untrustworthy they are, because “if they’re willing to do that for you today, they’re willing to do it to you later.” yet he was still willing to invest with taylor and have them make money for him, so long as axe’s name wasn’t attached. make it make sense, oscar!

6. selling douglas’s company (4x07-4x08): again, i don’t consider this a moral quandary because taylor was forced into a no-win situation by axe and wendy, and also because douglas just sucks, but again, the writing demands that we consider it. taylor was ready to partner with a VC on funding the development of douglas’s lattice fin design, but axe pulled some strings and got the federal government to demand the technology for national security reasons. with the VC and existing investors abandoning mase cap left and right, there was no way for taylor to keep both douglas’s technology and mase cap, so they chose to sell the tech to the government and keep their company afloat, at the cost of their already-crumbling relationship with douglas finally collapsing. naturally, axe then went on tv and spun this as taylor selling out their own father by flipping his company for their profit. much like what happened with oscar, this is yet another incident that’s more axe’s fault than taylor’s being described as a terrible choice taylor made that proves they can’t be trusted. (this only occasionally happens with actual questionable choices taylor made more freely — connerty prodding them about their new apartment in 2x11, danzig pointing out that taylor “led the charge in wringing cash from sandicot” in 4x01, axe also bringing up taylor taking grigor’s money in his tv appearance in 4x08.)

1. it’s late in the afternoon and you’re in a new city. do you take the train, the bus, or do you walk to get back to your place?

Am I just moving to this town? Likely, I’ve probably visited before so I would have a sense of how to use the transportation. Or, Google Maps is pretty handy! I actually enjoy walking most places if it’s available to me; otherwise, I’m a train kinda girl. I’ll take the bus if I have to. I’m very positive towards public transportation and energy efficiency. Reduce that carbon footprint!

2. what’s your dream place to live (city or country? continent? in land or by the sea? cold or warm?)?

Okay, but... gonna go cheesy and say with my loved one. ‘Cause I’d honestly survive with any climate as long as I’m with them.

Assuming I’m single af and forever alone, or at least living on my own for a while? I’m definitely a larger city kind of girl, or near access to a large city. I wouldn’t mind living in a suburb and then commuting to the city, actually. I love nature, but I don’t want to be isolated in it for too long. I spent three months in a literal jungle. I’ve had my share of country times.

Also, having lived near Wisconsin-- I am way over the winter. I’m fine if I don’t see a lot of snow. I actually do enjoy rain, though. 

3. what’s one of your favorite threads across any of the muses you have ever played?

One of the earliest threads I’ve written on this blog was with @argentnoir​ & it was just kind of like a slow burn / pining kind of deal? Where Tseng acknowledges that Yuffie is up to be empress of Wutai and how inappropriate it is as one who has actively abandoned his nation that he would support her. So he tries to deny and reject any feelings which might surface for her, while Yuffie is  very much a “ forget protocol, I like you. ” I really liked that dynamic of how Tseng knew what was right for the nation even if he no longer belonged to it, and Yuffie was very “you belong to me, therefore you belong to Wutai.” 

I’m weak for Tsuffie okay like let me die with this ship.

manzions // gorgeous. while my apartment was being renovated a few months back, i rented a room in an ex-friend’s house ( we were cool in high school but after that we grew apart ). anyway, the walls were paper thin & whenever i was depressed or crying or something, he would always play this song.

i am rather proficient at math, actually. i wanted to go into medicine at one point, then psychology. you need a background in statistics to do that. but i also showed an interest in calculus, despite being terrible at physics and three-dimensional art. i studied it into high school, but gave it up in college to pursue language and fine arts instead. 

6. were you a goosebumps kid or an ‘are you afraid of the dark’ kid?

goosebumps. though i’ll admit i read the books more than watching either show.

7. how many tamagotchis did you own in the past, and what were their names (if you remember)?

i never had a tamagotchi. or a neopet. that’s a whole era that goes right above me.

historical drama.

i’ve survived a lot of tough things, so i guess i’m rather proud of that. 

i’m also like... happy that i’m able to pull off a yuffie that isn’t reduced to a sex object. it’s really nice actually to see people more these days seeing her for her maturity & respecting her for the amount she’s able to achieve. even square has backed off with making her such a heavy comic relief, at least in dffoo, and that makes me really happy.

i only own one apple product & that’s a iPad that was given to me during college. which, it was rather useful while i was in school, but i can say i’m not really a fan of the whole “apple slowing down your devices to make you upgrade” thing. also, it’s so expensive? i’d like to get into video editing and photography, & while i’m aware i don’t need an apple to do that, i like the simplicity and interface and hardware. but.. y’all these prices & these games are too much.

i actually don’t... watch television... the last show i tried to actually pay attention to was designated survivor. ‘cause i’m weak for kiefer sutherland. and uh? idk i like it cause it has rising climax !

i also binge watched ghost adventures so.... maybe that counts. uh?? i would say maybe seasons 10-13 were my favorite because i felt bad for billy! always sending billy off on his own & his expressions about zak “can you stop summoning demons for a second?” is always great.

What’s your favorite car? Both make and model? oh god I’m not very knowledgeable in cars... Teslas seems pretty darn dope tho, aesthetically and functionality wise. I also really like to think about my carbon footprint so any car that puts that into consideration is gr8. Aesthetic wise, I seem to really like how BMWs and Audis look x’D

Any dream house you may have? I think because I live in the Bay Area I gave up any hopes of ever owning a house and never thought about this LOL However, I do enjoy houses with a big kitchen (what a coincidence this is coming from a Sanji blog) and for the main bedrooms to be on a separate floor from the living room.

If you had 24 hours to live, what would you do? Well first I would panic the fk out because 1 day isn’t very long. Then I’d go stuff myself with all my favorite foods and go into a food coma and peace out just like that. (tbh idk I don’t like thinking about dying it’s scary)

What language do you think is the prettiest, even if you dont know the language, by sound alone? I love how Korean sounds ;w; Also Italian sounds pretty nice too =w=

Do you have allergies? If so, what are they? I’m sure I have some sort of skin allergy because when I was little I would break out in something like hives and the itching would keep me up at night, it was really unpleasant. There were times where it got so bad that even my tongue felt like it was swelling up xD I haven’t experienced such breakout past 7th grade though thankfully. However if I get scratched, the scratch mark would turn swollen? Like I can draw on my skin and the lines would come back up red and swollen a few moments later :’D

Do you like, or know about, digimon? The only thing I know about digimon is DIGIMON RUMBLE ARENA 2. I would always play with Gabumon because he turns into freaking robo-dog-wolf Metalgarurumon who shoots canons and destroys everyone. 

What is your favorite thing about one piece? The tiniest details come back and smack you in the face 10293847023 chapters later; how intricate the entire OP universe is and how everything is somehow connected is quite fascinating. Also not every thing there is black/white, there’s a lot of grey areas.

What is your singer or band of choice that you listen to for comfort? BIGBANG or MAROON 5 they are my life. 

Who’s your favorite one piece character and why? I did that character ranking thing a while back. I’ll take this chance to talk about Chopper. I see Chopper as my spirit animal as he expresses a lot of emotions that I’d probably feel the same about but instead would keep under my RBF XD. I like that he’s always trying his best to help others. I like that he tries to be modest, his knowledge and skills shows through based on his actions. He might not be the most offensive but that’s ok because his support skills are just as vital to the crew. He’s timid but sucks it up and takes a stance when the time calls for it (as someone who is socially anxious I think that’s really admirable). And of course he’s a cute lil shit.
