Fandom: The Song of Achilles
Pairing: Achilles/Patroclus
Summary:
During the ten-year long Trojan War, Achilles was a fighter pilot, and Patroclus his combat systems operator and best friend. Now that the war is over, the two try to figure things out as they get adjusted to life out of combat, and their lifelong friendship and comradeship grows into something... more.
Or: I wanted to write smut and my hand slipped :) Angst, fluff, hurt/comfort galore, Achilles POV.
Read on AO3!
The first time they have sex is nothing like what Achilles expects. For the most part he tries to take it slow, to savour the moment, to show Patroclus how much he cares, how long he’s wanted this, but before he knows it they’re both tearing at each other’s clothes somewhere between the bed and the hallway, and Patroclus is urging him to go faster, faster, harder— until they’re both panting, boneless and spent, on the living room floor.
And it's great. Not how he’d imagined it, but great all the same.
In truth, there’s a million different ways he’d imagined this. It’s been a dream of his ever since he can remember himself actually— not this, precisely, but being with Patroclus. Kissing him. Holding him. In all the years they've known each other, he’s gone through all the possible scenarios in his head: the dreamy ones, where he takes him to the beach they used to go to as kids, and kisses him gently, bathed in the sunset’s glow that catches in the amber flecks in the dark brown of Patroclus’ eyes. The more emotional ones, where Patroclus comes to him in the middle of the night after one of his nightmares, and Achilles is there to comfort him, as always, and their innocent, friendly cuddling turns into something more. And there are the darker, more feral ones, where Achilles grabs him and pulls him close, and they kiss with abandon before falling on the nearest flat surface.
The reality is somewhere in between all of those daydreams, and none of them at all.
Achilles has just arrived in Athens from Troy. It hasn’t been more than two weeks after the war has finally ended, but Achilles was given early honorable discharge, while the others stayed back at the base for a few more weeks. So, the first thing he did was grab the first plane he could find and fly wherever Patroclus was. Patroclus was relieved of duty about six months back because of an injury —he’s better now, it’s fine— but to Achilles it feels like an eternity since he’s last seen him. He knew he should probably have gone to Phthia first to see his old man after so many years on the battlefield, but he just couldn’t help himself.
He feels a little guilty about it, but he forgets everything the moment the plane lands, and he sees Patroclus’ bright, smiling face waiting for him at the airport arrivals.
Fuck, he’s so beautiful.
Achilles' heart is beating a frantic rhythm as he closes the distance between them in just a few strides. Patroclus’ arms come around him, as if by rote, and it feels so right to be there with him, to have him in his arms and to have his familiar, earthy scent in his nose. Achilles has missed him so much that, for a few moments, he really has no words.
He pulls back to look at him, and in the airport’s artificial lights, Patroclus’ eyes are bright like lit up stars. He looks better than he did the last time Achilles saw him: he’s healthy and joyous and his complexion looks better, more vibrant; he’s gained a little bit of weight too which is good, after losing so much of it during those last couple months in Troy. Achilles’ gaze drops to his shoulder, his arm that had been wounded, and it’s such a relief to not be able to discern any visible sign of his injury, at least not through his clothes. He catalogues everything, every small detail in his mind in crystal clear, drinking in the sight of him.
“How was your flight? Good?” Patroclus asks. He takes a small step back as they peel away from each other. They stand for a little while there, gazing at each other, and it’s a bit awkward, a bit tense, like there’s something they’re not saying.
The distance between them makes Achilles feel uneasy, but he brushes the feeling away.
“Good. Yeah. The coffee was atrocious. Couldn’t wait for it to be over.” He slinks the duffel bag that holds all of his belongings over his shoulder, then places his arm on Patroclus’ shoulders in a friendly hug as they walk towards the exits. The people they pass by turn to glance at him, their eyes swiftly taking in Achilles’ aviation officer uniform. He’s sticking out like a fly in milk, but he honestly couldn’t care less. Soon, the planes and ships will be full of soldiers returning to their home bases; they’ll all get used to the sight. “What have you been up to? Tell me all about it.”
They’ve been in touch since Patroclus left, of course. They’ve been texting and talking on the phone, Patroclus even sent him an old fashioned letter once, but it’s different now that they’re face to face. It’s like Achilles has been starved, all the while they’ve been apart, and he can’t get enough of the sound of his voice, his expressions, his laughter, the way he slips his hands in his pockets and gets a little light on his feet when he walks.
He still feels a bit heavy, the war no doubt still fresh in his mind, but he’s smiling and laughing like always. And it’s good. It’s more than good actually— it’s great.
Things have been going great ever since he came back, Patroclus says. He got into vet school with the help of one of his ex-senior officer’s recommendation letters —he’s always wanted to be a vet. He's found a flat, and he’s getting a small veteran pension too, enough for him to go by. He’s met new friends, and they’re all great. Everything’s great, really.
“It feels like I finally have a life,” Patroclus tells him, and holds the car door open for him to get in. “You know?”
Achilles is happy for him. He really is. Patroclus deserves everything good, he deserves to have the life he’s always wanted. He gets in the passenger seat and puts on some music, and, for a moment, it’s just like old times.
The air in Athens is heavy and humid, the sun blasting scorching bright above them. Patroclus takes him to one of the restaurants near the university that he likes to go —the dumplings here are great, you’ll love them— and then gives him a tour of the part of the campus that’s open for visitors.
It’s not how Achilles imagined it would be. It’s quite an old building actually, and there are pigeons nesting in the high rafters of the open hall. It’s Sunday, though, so the park out front is quiet. Only a few throngs of students lazying about on the warm grass, basking in the sun, blasting music from tiny portable speakers.
Achilles watches everything like an alien. In truth, he is. It’s been years since he last set foot outside of Troy, and before that he was almost a kid. It’s a strange feeling to find that life has actually been going on in something that’s very close to normal, all the while they’ve all been risking their lives at the other side of the Aegean.
It is odd, not fighting anymore, not being at war. Patroclus himself seems to have forgotten about it all, to have gotten used to his life here, but Achilles knows him better than this. He’s thoughtful, and there are moments when he goes quiet, and Achilles can tell there is something that’s bothering him still.
But Achilles doesn’t ask him. He doesn’t want to press him to talk. It’s what Patroclus does: he always takes his time thinking about stuff, it’s how he processes everything. And the memories from the war are still fresh. Patroclus may never have been in the thick of it for the most part, but certain things never leave you.
Achilles sinks back on the grass, and sneaks occasional glances at Patroclus, at the fiery blaze of the late spring sunset and the way it warms up Patroclus’ olive skin, the dark curls that wisp about his face when the breeze blows through them. His hair has gotten long now, caressing the back of his neck, like it used to when they were kids, before Patroclus had to crop it short for the army. Achilles falls silent when Patroclus does, and pretends not to notice the tension between them, like there’s something vibrating in the air.
They’ve been apart for too long. That’s probably it.
After the sun sets, Patroclus takes him to a bar downtown. It’s apparently a cool place that college kids like to go, hidden in a small cobble-stone lane in the old city. Once again, Achilles feels the alien there, standing out like a sore thumb, but it’s probably all in his head. He’s not wearing his uniform anymore; the tee shirt and jeans Patroclus lent him are a little too small for him, but not by much. It’s certainly strange to be wearing normal clothes again, but Achilles tries not to think about it.
He has a drink, then another, and another, and Patroclus does, too. The music is pleasant, not too loud, just loud enough for them to keep a conversation going without the silences between them getting too awkward.
Things have not exactly been the same between them since Patroclus left Troy. Achilles doesn’t exactly know what it is, but he can tell it’s on Patroclus’ mind too; it has to be. They’ve known each other too long, and they’ve gone through too much to not be able to read each other. There’s something between them now, hanging in the air like a barrier, and Achilles keeps wanting to open up, to take the conversation there, but he never does.
Instead, he keeps getting distracted by the expression on Patroclus' face. His eyes look so vivid, so bright in the dim yellow light of the bar. His cheeks are flushed, and his lips are glistening from his drink, and the way they wrap around the head of his beer bottle has Achilles’ mind going to places it shouldn’t.
So he orders another drink. He tries to act casual, and cracks a couple jokes, and then tells Patroclus about Menelaus and Agamemnon and Antilochus, all the guys from their division —those that made it back alive, but he leaves out that part— and the shadows in Patroclus’ eyes grow less and less dark.
“It’s time they all came back,” he says. “I'm just glad it's all finally over.”
Achilles nods in agreement, and takes another sip. It hasn’t been easy for anyone, that much he knows.
It’s almost midnight when they make it back to Patroclus’ flat. It’s just a short walk from the bar, and they’re both a bit buzzy from the drink. They’re not plastered by any means, but loose and relaxed and a little giggly, and Patroclus leans against him as they walk. His arm threads around Achilles’ as if by accident, his steps falling alongside his, and Achilles’ heart thrums with all the longing he’s suppressed for months, for years now, and that he’s suppressing still.
It’s fine, he tells himself as Patroclus fiddles with the key to the main building door. It’s going to be fine, though his eyes instinctively fall to Patroclus’ back, and he keeps picturing that soft dip between his shoulder blades underneath his tee shirt, the muscles that fall and rise under his skin when he moves. He tries to remember how long it has been since he’s caught a glimpse of his bare back as he was changing out of his shirt in the barracks before bed, skin still a little damp from his shower, and oh god why is he like this—
He jolts a little when Patroclus takes his hand and he leads him to the elevator. He’s not used to Patroclus’ fingers threading through his own, they’ve never really touched each other like that, but it’s a welcome change. Patroclus is still a little giggly, and his laughter reverberates off the walls of the dark entrance hall. Achilles’ arm comes around his shoulders as they watch the numbers flash in the elevator’s panel.
Ground floor. First floor. Third.
Patroclus doesn’t let him go as walks up to his flat door. He fumbles with the key a little, and when he finally pushes the door open, Achilles is almost relieved, almost a little disappointed, because walking in will probably mean letting Patroclus’ hand go, and he doesn’t really want that, but he’s not exactly sure what it means either if they keep holding each other like this.
Achilles says something to break the tension when they walk in and the door closes behind them. Patroclus laughs again, and the sound of it makes Achilles warm inside out.
He leans in and kisses him.

One day in my life I'd love to go on Alexander inspired epic journey. I'm wondering if there's any google maps trip plan? Somebody should publish this printed tour guide with photos of Alexander related locations and with informations which museums hold significant antics :) Do you plan some kind of Alexander expedition? Which places are a must see!?
There aren’t (to my knowledge) such maps. That said, I’ve been to Greece and Macedonia several times, and I can offer you at least some advice on where to go there (and in Bulgaria). So consider this a “Young Alexander Tour.” 😊 One difficulty with doing a full tour is that many of the areas Alexander went through are not currently safe (especially if you happen to be white, female, look it, or are non-binary). Not everywhere, but it’s critical to be hip to current politics.
So, let’s look at a tour of Greece and Bulgaria, at least. Let me say, first, that on my website for the novels, I’ve got several vlogs of areas in Greece and Thrace that you’ll want to visit. I was not allowed to make such videos in Greek museums, but at least you can watch the vlogs and get a sense of some places well worth a trip.
So… Young Alexander Tour… first up, you want to focus on the north. That means you may want to fly into Thessaloniki, not Athens. One reason is that the airport is smaller, easier to navigate, and outside the city. The latter matters as you’re going to want to…
RENT A CAR. (That’s Bucephalas. Yes, we named our rental.)
Seriously. Driving in Greece isn’t hard, outside of Athens and downtown Thessaloniki (get an international driver’s license). And the only way to REALLY see where Alexander went is via car. Otherwise you’re stuck with a bus tour that won’t give you adequate time in museums, as they’re made for “general interest,” not crazy Alexander people. They’ll also be curating WHAT you see and how it’s described to you. That matters in Macedonia due to the modern conflict with Northern Macedonia over the ethnicity of the Macedonians, and who’s buried in “Philip’s Tomb.”
Siri can help with the maps, but sometimes she leads you REALLY WEIRD paths to your destination. You’ll quickly note that the major highways, such as the A1 and A2 are in GREAT shape, but other highways, not so much. We went from what would be a perfectly acceptable interstate in the US to…county roads. These sometimes faded into gravel, and even dirt. I’ve seen roadsigns spray-painted on the road itself. Assume you’ll have some adventures, and allot yourself extra time. By contrast, most parking is free, just pay attention to the “No Park” signs (like those in front of people’s garages, etc.). Also, the freeways have tolls, so you’ll want to have coins on hand, most ranted from half a drachma to shy of 3 or 4. (Below: one of the nice tunnels on the freeway through the Pindos, and then one of the “goat tracks” Siri took us down.)
Cities in North Greece to visit:
Pella (obviously—Great museum AND site, you can spend a whole day there)
Vergina (with the royal tombs and palace of Aigai): welcome sign below
Mieza (absolute must—my favorite place in Macedonia)
Veroia (under-appreciated museum and important ancient town on the piedmont)
Dion & Olympos (site and museum, sacred city of Macedonia, and of course see the mountain!)
Florina (optional, but you can see upper Macedonia, it’s on the line between ancient Orestis and Lynkestis)
Edessa (I’m mostly listing this because it’s super cool to see the waterfalls, but doesn’t have a museum there), and it’s on the way back from Florina.
Ioannina (site of Dodona and Ioannina museum, where Olympias was born)
Aiani (beautiful stuff, kinda hard to find but modern museum, ancient Eordia)
Amphipolis site + Drama (little museum, but worth seeing the area of Eastern Macedonia/Thrace). Drama has some interesting Dionysiac stuff.
If you want to explore further east, I recommend the northern islands of Thasos and Samothrace. Problem: the ferries to them come from different cities. Thasos is out of Kavala (a lovely city with a great Norman fort), while for Samothrace you need to go the easternmost city of Alexandroupoli (NOT the one he founded in Thrace!). It’s a pretty modern place with a big port, but it’s only interest for Macedoniasts is the fact you can catch the ferry there to Samothrace, where you’ll find the site of the Mysteries and the Temple to the Great Gods, where Philip first “met” Olympias (e.g., their families nailed down a betrothal when Perdikkas was still king).
Thessaloniki (the main museum is there, “Gold of Macedonia” is gorgeous. But I recommend picking up your car when you fly in, see everywhere else first, then drop it off and hire a taxi to the city, where I recommend staying somewhere near Aristoteles Square, on the harbor. Also—go and see the Jewish Museum: it’s a secret gem. I really love Thessaloniki. Below is the statue of Manolis Andronikos, who found the royal tombs at Aigai.)
THEN…two options.
Option One: Take a bus to Sofia (Bulgaria), rent another car and drive to Kasanlak and the Valley of the Kings, to see Thracian goods in the museum and also the Thracian Royal Tombs. Stop at the museum in Plovdiv, too. Cool stuff. Driving in Bulgaria, like driving in North Greece, is pretty easy, although you’ll need a handy chart to read Cyrillic. And many, many fewer people (outside Sofia) speak English. But it’s beautiful. The Valley of the Kings is the heart of ancient Thrace be sure to see not only the museum and Kasanlak, but also the royal tombs nearby. Drive back and spend 2 nights in Sofia to see the museum and beautiful city. I really enjoyed my stay in Bulgaria; beautiful country, under-appreciated. Catch a bus back to Thessaloniki. Btw, the bus-route goes right along the Strymon River, which was the big “highway” between Thrace and Macedonia. (From the window of the bus to Sofia.)
Option Two (or could follow after option one): Take a bus to Athens, and/or, drive to Delphi and spend a day and a couple nights (Alexander went there), then drive and/or catch a bus to Athens. The airport (and car rental place) is outside the main city, so it’s not terrible to drop it off. Just avoid driving in Athens unless you read Greek well. It’s kinda crazy. The subway goes from the airport right into the old city. WATCH YOUR BAGS. Pickpockets are notorious on that subway route. Put your passport in your underwear. I’m not kidding.
I will confess, I am not a huge fan of Athens (ancient or modern, sorry); it’s busy, dirty, and not that Macedonia-focused. But you should go there. While there’s not a lot of Alexander in the National Museum, go and see it anyway. Go to the Akropolis and the lovely Akropolis Museum to see the Young-Alex bust there. Go to the Kerameikos and Aristotle’s School right near by. Go to the agora. If you’re already in Greece, you really should see those things. Alexander walked those same areas. But after seeing the glory of northern Macedonia (including the gorgeous countryside), Athens may be a bit of a let-down, especially if your focus is All Things Alexander and Macedonian.
Last, you can catch a bus and cross the Isthmus to Corinth, where Philip spent some time hammering out his Corinthian League. There’s really not a lot there of interest for Macedoniasts, but if you want to travel where Alexander went in the south, it’s on the itinerary.
Personally, if I were to choose between Corinth and Bulgaria? Bulgaria! The absolutely amazing Thracian artifacts show just HOW much of a “shared culture” we see between Macedonia and Thrace. But I strongly suggest going to Thrace after seeing material in Macedonia, so you can appreciate the corollaries.
In terms of driving around, it’s probably best to find yourself a “launch place” outside of Thessaloniki. Don’t try to rent hotels in all these places (except Ioannina, which is far enough from the lowlands it’s worth an overnight). Some are just a couple hours visit. Veroia, while not to be missed, is … an hour? More if you like taking pictures; you can do it the same day you see Vergina. They’re not that far apart. Florina is the same. Ioannina isn’t big either, but the site of Dodona is v. cool and that’s going to take your day, but on the way back, you could swing by Aiani; that’s an afternoon.
There are a number of AirBnBs in the lowland area around Vergina, Katerini, Veroia, Nea Pella, We stayed in a lovely one not far off the A1 out of Thessaloniki in Nea Malgara/Kymina. It was pretty ideal as Pella is just north, and a little west the A2 splits from the A1, and the A2 takes you towards Vergina, while the A1 takes you to Dion and Olympos. IN Thessaloniki are lots of AirBnBs, but I’ll put in a plug for the Electra Palace (hotel). It ain’t cheap, but it’s great for location/walking distance of most things. That’s why I suggest Aristoteles Square to orient yourself.
So those are my suggestions, info up-to-date as of May/June 2018. I hope to go back again this summer, Corona virus permitting.

Karl Ove Knausgaard, My Struggle: Book 5: Some Rain Must Fall (2016) trans. Dan Bartlett
The fourteen years I lived in Bergen, from 1988 to 2002, are long gone, no traces of them are left, other than as incidents a few people might remember, a flash of recollection here, a flash of recollection there, and of course whatever exists in my own memory of that time. But there is surprisingly little. All that is left of the thousands of days I spent in that small, narrow-streeted, rain-shimmering Vestland town is a few events and lots of sentiments. I kept a diary, which I have since burned. I took some photos, of which twelve remain; they are in a little pile on the floor beside the desk, with all the letters I received during those days. I have flicked through them, read bits and pieces, and this has always depressed me, it was such a terrible time. I knew so little, had such ambitions, and achieved nothing. But what spirits I was in before I went! I had hitchhiked to Florence with Lars that summer, we stayed there for a few days, caught the train down to Brindisi, the weather was so hot it felt as though your head was on fire when you poked it through the open train window. Night in Brindisi, dark sky, white houses, heat as in a dream, big crowds in the parks, young people on mopeds everywhere, shouting and noise. We lined up by the gangway to the big ship going to Piraeus, with lots of others, almost all young and carrying backpacks like us. It was 120 degrees in Rhodes. One day in Athens, the most chaotic place I have ever been, and so insanely hot, then the boat to Paros and Antiparos, where we lay on the beach every day and got drunk every night. One evening we met some Norwegian girls, and while I was in the toilet Lars told them he was a writer and had been accepted to start at the Writing Academy in the autumn. They were discussing this when I returned. Lars just smiled at me. What was he up to? I knew he was prone to telling little fibs, but while I was standing there? I said nothing, decided to give him a wide berth in the future. We went to Athens together, I had run out of money, Lars was still rolling in it, he decided to fly back home the day after. We were sitting in a terrace restaurant, he was eating chicken, his chin glistening with fat, I was drinking a glass of water. The last thing I wanted to do was ask him for money, the only way I could get any out of him was if he asked me whether I wanted to borrow some. But he didn’t, so I went hungry. The next day he left for the airport, and I took a bus to the suburbs, got off near a motorway on-ramp and started hitchhiking. After no more than a few minutes a police car stopped, the officers couldn’t speak a word of English, but I got the message that hitchhiking wasn’t allowed there, so I caught a bus back to the city center, and with the last of my money bought a train ticket to Vienna, a loaf of bread, a big bottle of Coke, and a carton of cigarettes.

Where is the Party?
I didn’t want to, but I eventually decided to open one eye, and then the other, and then looked around in the dusty tomb. I sat up slowly, trying to shake the cobwebs from my mind, then stretched languidly with a big groan. “Ohhhh, my head,” I said to myself just to be sure I could still talk. “I don’t know who, but someone definitely spiked the punch last night.” Donning my sandals and reaching for my thyrsos, I walked over to the table, picked up my ivy crown, and placed it on my head crookedly. Who cares about isometry, after all? Not me. Looking around, I let out a soft laugh that turned into a cackle in the next breath and eventually died into a cough. I made my way outside to the narrow street and took a few steps before a lot of yelling was directed my way, followed by a trumpeting bellow. Turning, I had barely enough time to side-step the laden elephant lumbering down the street. “Oh great,” I said out loud, adding an eye-roll, “I must be in India again. No wonder the bike lanes are on the wrong side of the street. Leave it to me to get plastered in a place where the only alcohol they sell is the rubbing kind.” I laughed heartily at my own joke until I ran out of breath and then leaned heavily on my thyrsos. Slowly—every step took me closer to the edge of the village—and a few more steps after that led me into the woods. Once safe in the darkness of the forest, I swayed for a few seconds and thudded my thyrsos against the ground three times. I waited with my eyes closed, quiet and unmoving. A few minutes passed when suddenly everything around me went quiet. There was no more chirping and no more rustling about. Another silent moment passed before the reason for the hush announced itself with a low but powerful growl. Opening one eye, and then the other, I smiled broadly and did a little jig at the massive male panther standing in front of me. He gave me a bored look, licking his maw. Looking the huge beautiful cat in the eyes, I made a circular motion with my index finger, pointing down. The large beast gave me a look, and I swore he rolled its eyes at me! A few seconds passed before the panther gave up with a snort and turned his back. “You better turn around…” I returned the panther’s snort and reached out to scratch behind his ears. Heaving a leg over his back, I slid down close to his haunches, getting comfortable. I leaned forward a bit and grabbed him by the scruff of the neck. “To the airport, Jeeves,” I said with a chortle, “I have family that isn’t expecting me.” The panther rolled his eyes at me for real this time, but I ignored the gesture. Moving along with the gait of the beast, I closed my eyes, trusting the cat’s sense of direction. I thought back on times of old...times of very old. The call of Olympus had not reached out to me for a long time…until recently. I couldn’t guess at what this calling I had felt the past months was all about. All I knew was that I had avoided it long enough, and it had gotten to the point where it was drowning all the other voices in my head. When I opened my eyes, I was already standing where I wanted to be standing: in front of one of the many sliding-door entrances to the airport. I walked in with a mumble, leaning on my thyrsos, and made my way to the kiosk. I stared the tired-looking employee in the eyes. “I would like one ticket to Athens, please. Yes, the original one. None of the copies they made ages later. And of course, I want it to be first class. That’s where you get wine for free, isn’t it? Tell them to stock up on extra bottles of red. What’s that? Name? Dionysos. Yes, like the god. Last name? Don’t have one. I’m like…Cher, but prettier. No. What makes you think I was kidding? Do you take a check?” The ride on the plane was a mix between drool-on-myself-more-than-usual boring and tear-my-beard-out-and-feed-it-to-someone annoying. Things started off well enough after the whole check-in fiasco...the airlines do not take checks. I am not in the mood to rehash that nonsense. Since when is a piece of paper with the name of a god on it, worthless? I bet if my name were Justin Bieber, she would have accepted the check. I really need to work on my celebrity status! The person assigned to serve me in first class was a tiny little thing with smooth sepia-toned skin, straight raven-black hair, and the most beautiful pale green eyes. The tag pinned to her vest read Shiree, but after the third time I blurted out a bit too loud for everyone’s liking, “More wine, sweet Cherry!” She walked up to me, puckered her lips, and narrowed her eyes, asking me politely to call her “Stewardess.” Two hours into the flight, after her eighteenth trip to my seat for more wine, she finally resigned to me calling her “Bartender.” She did threaten me once by telling me she’d have the flight marshal put me in handcuffs, but backed off when I waggled my eyebrows at her and told her she could use my set if she wanted. As we began our final approach and started getting ready to land, I looked out the window. It took me a minute to register that I was nowhere near the water south of the city, but further west, past the hills where Pallene used to be back in the day. I laughed to myself, and Cherry, the Bartender, gave me a stern look from her temporary seat, all buckled up. I gave her the stink-eye in reply and looked back out the window. A new airport out in the middle of nowhere would make it a lot easier for me to find transportation a la Dionysos. As soon as we landed, I walked through the gates and out the doors. Suddenly, the trip I dreaded so much is filling me with excitement, and I can’t figure out why. Leaning on my thyrsos, I turned right, walked past the overpass leading to the parking lot, and kept going until my feet touched earth. I am not going to lie. As soon as I smelled the open air, saw the pine trees sway, and heard the cicadas chirping in the sun, my heart quickened. My lips tried to repeat out loud what my heart told my brain to say. “It has been too lo…” was all I got out before a tear escaped my right eye and trickled down to water my beard. Before I knew it, I was on my knees, bawling, like the time sweet Ikarios was taken from us sooner than expected. Steadying myself on my thyrsos, I jabbed at the earth with my left thumb, where my tears fell and murmured softly. Finally making it back up to my feet, I looked around and realized that no one had noticed me. Walking under the bright sun, I headed for the closest thatch of trees. When in the shadows, I turned back to the path I took and cackled in delight at the small vine that popped out of the ground, right where my tears had fallen. Those grapes will be sour to eat, but they will make a hell of a retsina…if anyone bothers to cultivate them. Hidden in the small forest, I closed my eyes, trying to concentrate as much as my brain would allow. I pounded my thyrsos into the ground three times and waited, unmoving. I tried to picture a bull, or even better yet, a donkey. Even though I was not in the city, I was close enough that I would be lucky if I could summon a chicken. Another few minutes passed, and sweat started to roll down my back. Just when I was about to give up and go look for a taxi, I heard a low growl. For the second time in minutes, I found myself on my knees again, but this time laughing like a toddler. “What in all the Mavrodaphne grapes of Patra are you doing here?” I asked the very same panther that answered my summons thousands of miles away. I headbutted him while tickling him right under his jaw. His bright emerald eyes looked back at me and blinked once, then he moved to lick the hand that was still holding on to my thyrsos. I patted him on the head and smiled. “Don’t think that showing up here will excuse you for giving me attitude, mourgo mou,” I admonished the cat which of course, scared him so much that he yawned and gave me a bored look. I laughed one more time and snapped my fingers. “That’s it! That will be your name from now on! Mourgo you shall be! Oh, hey now…” I snatched back my hand before the ungrateful panther bit it off after a loud growl. I waited a few seconds for Mourgo to get over himself before I looked him in the eyes and made the same circular motion with my index finger pointing down. The cat openly rolled his eyes at me again but turned around to let me sit. A minute later, I was perched, and I concentrated on daddy dearest. Mourgo started a slow, steady walk, while I closed my eyes and trusted my bond with the panther to get me where I wanted to go, once again. When I opened my eyes, I stood where I was supposed to be standing, but not where I was expecting to be standing since I thought I’d be standing a lot higher up from where I was standing right then. And that made my head hurt as if I was suffering from brain freeze. I could sense the power of the immortals, but…not from where I expected. “Wait a second…I’m not on the mountaintop…” I stood on a small hill under the shadow of the mountain I knew so well. Sprawled in front of me, I saw what looked like a brand new mini-city with patches of homes and stores and streets and cars. In between them, a huge tower that stretched up and up and up. I whistled and then heaved a big sigh as my neck craned up the shining tower, designed with as much pomp and circumstance as the family could muster. I rolled my eyes and started mumbling to myself as I made my way toward the big tower. “Some things never change. Now I know where the party is. Leave it up to Daddio to make the new place look like a big…” Read the full article

Renegades: The Journey
Assassin’s Creed: Renegades - The Journey (Chapter Three)
Renegades Masterpost
--
Pressing a kiss to her hand, and placing her hand on the smooth body of her bike, Lisa bids farewell to her favourite piece of machinery. Luckily for her, Connor offered to keep it safe in the Assassin’s garage for her whilst she is away - but still, she’ll miss it, almost as much as the Assassins here. Both Connor and his senior, Achilles, are there to wave her off, the former enveloping her in a crushing bearhug whilst muttering something about missing her already. Mentor Achilles opts for a more formal approach, offering Lisa a brisk handshake instead.
“Are we ready to go, then? The car’s waiting,” Kassandra appears at the door, impatient to get back home. With a final farewell to her bike and friends, Lisa skips out the door, dragging her suitcase behind her. “Here, let me,” Kassandra lifts the full case into the car boot with ease, her muscles barely straining at such a task, “Nice bike you got there, I’ve got one similar back home. You can borrow the spare one when we get there if you’d like,” Squeezing herself into the seat between the siblings, Lisa’s face lights up at that thought. “I’d like that very much,” she hums, feeling horribly inadequate between the muscled Greeks.
As the taxi rolls into action, the trio natter away like old friends, even chatting with the sweet taxi driver in the front. Once in the airport, their checkin is swift, and soon enough an air host is ushering them into a posh departure lounge, to where a few other Assassin agents linger. Eventually, they are given clearance, and are again ushered out onto the runway, where the Assassin’s private jet awaits them all. Brows raised at the internal refurb in the jet, Lisa harks back to her last trip in the plane, all the way from London to New York, with only herself for company. Chucking her hand luggage in the storage box - her suitcase having been bundled into the hold - Lisa plops down of the first free chair she spots, marvelling at its plushness. The air hosts do their thing of point exits and whatnot, then their pilot comes over the intercom.
“Welcome all to this private flight, the time is currently 10:17, and in a few minutes we will taxi out to commence our flight,” the smooth voice greets them all, “This flight is approximately 10 hours 30 minutes, and we should arrive in Naples at around 06:40, their time,”
Craning her neck to find Kassandra, Lisa breathes a sigh of relief when she spots the Spartan sat behind her.
“Hey Kass, if we’re landing in Naples, how’re we getting to Greece?” she asks, furrowing her brows. “First we will drive East to Bari, then we’ll get on my ship and sail there,” the response comes, “Normally we’d land straight in Greece, but since others are coming with us, it seemed easier to go straight to Italy,”
Nodding, Lisa looks around the plane, taking proper looks at the faces of the others’ for the first time since arrival. Alexios sits somewhere at the back, near Bayek. Across the jet, she sees the devilishly handsome Ezio Auditore snoring gently already, and behind him, the ever silent Arno Dorian - Mentor of the Frenchies. A jolt shudders through the plane, warning the Assassins of the imminent take off. Leaning back in her seat, Lisa watches the receding land fade away beneath the clouds as the jet soars into the sky. Once the seat belt light flashes off, the unanimous click of almost all belts rattles around the fuselage, and immediately half of the Assassins are crowded around the built in bar.
Retrieving her bag, Lisa plops back down on her seat, and begins to rummage through for her headphones. 10 hours to kill, and strictly speaking, Lisa isn’t big on the whole drinking stuff. As her fingers brush the soft velvet covered box at the bottom of her bag, Lisa starts in her seat: she’d forgotten she’d put that in there. With the aim to forget it, Lisa frowns as her fingers betray her and retrieve that damned box instead of her headphones. Her fingers tremble a little as she flips it open once more, the intricate pattern shining in the incandescent lighting. For a moment, her mind wanders back to that happy time. A candlelit dinner, a pair of smiling brown eyes, calloused hands clasping hers, this very necklace resting in its box - these images flit through her mind, spaced out by flashes of the angst upon discovering her love’s disappearance.
“What’s that you got?” Alexios appears seemingly out of nowhere, leaning over her shoulder to look at the necklace.
“Hmm, nothing,” she hums, “Just something I got ages ago,”
Upon seeing the tree of life sigil, Alexios pauses, his brows flickering together for a moment before he remembers himself.
“It’s lovely” he squeezes onto the chair beside her, “Am I right in saying it’s a Celtic symbol?” “The Yggdrasil is Norse I think, but the whole tree of life thing is probably used in Celtic mythology too,” Lisa hums, repeating the same words her lover had told her long ago upon giving her the gift, “He...the one who gave it to me, I mean, he was into all his mythology and stuff - he was Irish,”
Lips pursed, Alexios nods again, his thick finger gently stroking the edge of the delicate pewter pendant. “Was?” he queries, the golden rings of his eyes meeting hers, “What happened?” Slamming the lid shut, Lisa stuffs the damned thing back into her bag - it’s no use getting caught up on the past, she needs to look to the future. “I’m not sure,” she whispers, “He went on a mission and never returned, Achilles and the others told me nothing - so I presume him to be dead,”
What she doesn’t add is that the Yggdrasil necklace disappeared at the same time, only to return again after her encounter with the masked man who knew her name at the warehouse.
“Ouch, sorry to hear that...you can talk to me and Kass about it anytime, you know,” he ruffles her hair out its bun, “If we’re to work together we should all get to know each other and be friends - no secrets,”
Standing back up, Alexios flashes Lisa a knee weakening smile, and points to where the other Assassin’s are gathered. “Now if you don’t mind,” he adjusts the strings of his red hoodie, “I promised Monsieur Dorian a drinking contest,”
Watching the muscled Spartan disappear into the bar area, Lisa curls up on her chair and inserts her headphones, pulling up her favourite playlist. Eyes gazing out the window, Lisa leans back and lets the soothing beats of Ghost’s Nocturnal Me take her to the land of bliss slumber.
--
The rest of the flight passes without incident, with them landing in Naples International at the precisely the predicted time. The car park outside if full of various goodbyes as the Assassin’s set off on their various journeys. Alexios, Kassandra, and Lisa are the last left waiting, until a smooth, black Jaguar car glides up next to them, and the window rolls down.
“Get in losers, we’re going to Bari,” the woman inside laughs, looking at the trio over her wide brimmed sunglasses.
Immediately Kassandra has the door open and is practically sat on the lady’s lap, pressing firm kisses to her lips. “Kyra babe, I’ve missed you,” she hums, gesturing for Alexios to put the cases in the boot.
As the two lovers take up the front seats, Lisa and Alexios end up in the back again - not that they mind, as they both get to control the various snacks Kyra brought with them for the 3 hour drive.
--
It’s mid morning when they finally arrive in Bari, having come to a stop in the car park by the port. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Lisa takes in the bright, sun soaked port, and smiles at the rows of yachts that greet her.
“Last leg now,” Kassandra rolls from the car, stretching her stiff legs in the morning breeze.
Goraning to himself, Alexios pulls the rest of the cases from the boot, as Kyra hands over the car’s keys to the car rental guy, who immediately inspects the vehicle for damage. Bag of crisps clutched in her hands, Lisa falls into step behind the others as they stroll along the port side.
“You’re going to love the Adrestia,” Kyra twists around to smile widely at Lisa, “It’s so spacious and luxurious - you wouldn’t think it’s a boat once you’re inside!”
Kyra’s words prove to be true, as the moment Lisa lays eyes on the luxurious yacht she simply falls in love with it. From the detailed artwork on the hull, that likens the ship to an Ancient Greek Warship, to the cornflower blue sails tied to its trio of masts - the Adrestia is truly a sight to behold.
As they board, they are greeted with a huge bear hug from a smallish man.
“Welcome back! Who’s this new face Barnabas sees here? Welcome to the Adrestia new lady,” the man waves, introduces himself as Barnabas. “I’m Lisa,” the ‘new lady’ speaks, “Nice to meet you Barnabas,”
In the middle of taking their cases into the yacht, Barnabas nearly jumps out of his skin when a panel in the cabin beeps loudly: “That’s never good”, he huffs, dropping their cases down.
All five of them jog into the cabin, where the radar panel in the centre beeps again, more urgently this time. Together, they crowd around it. A flashing white dot sits at the far edge of the screen, telling them that another ship is approaching.
Storming over to the window, Alexios peers out in the general direction of the dot - spotting his target instantly.
“Templars,” he hisses, stepping aside to point at the distant yacht.
“We are all too worn out to fight, and Ezio will have our guts for garters if we start a fight on his soil...we’d better get out of here before they find us,” Kassandra suggests, turning back from the crimson sailed yacht to face the others, who all nod in agreement.
“Yeah, we’ll all be dead on our feet if we try to fight now, not to mention the long journey ahead,” Lisa twirls around on the chair she has found herself on, “Speaking of which, how long is it until we reach….wherever we’re going?”
“Athens,” Barnabas clarifies, consulting his GPS screen, “It should take only 15 hours,” Only? Gods help them all.
Sighing at the prospect of more long journeys, Lisa consoles herself with the idea of being in goddamned Athens by the end of the night. As the silent engines of the Adrestia whirr into life, she grabs a cool can of lemonade from the fridge, and joins the others on the deck of the ship.
They pass the scarlet sailed ship in silence, all of them barely daring to breathe lest the Templars on board clock their presence. Tilting her head to the side, Lisa pauses when she spots who exactly is disembarking from that ship.
A tall man walks off first, coming to a stop on the stone dock wall, his black shirt sticks to his broad shoulders with perspiration, and his dark hair is slicked to his head with it too.
The balmy air around Lisa turns frigid as she looks upon the man, reluctantly spotting how similar he looks to her old lover...no, Shay Cormac died two years ago, there is no way he is stood in goddamned Bari right now.
Suddenly deciding the lemonade is too sweet for her, Lisa hands it over to Alexios and enters the yacht once more. Maybe, maybe it’s just her travel tired eyes playing tricks on her. Yes, maybe she’s just too jet lagged, and her chat with Alexios on the plane...hmm, she needs some good sleep, then she’ll be fine.
Collapsing onto the soft bed of her private cabin, Lisa barely has the time to shuck off her shoes before the welcome embrace of sleep claims her.

One Night in Athens (Bastien, Leo, and OCs, NSFW)
Prompt: @laniquelove‘s April Fanfic Challenge: Random Headcanon
Summary: Bastien follows Leo to a nightclub in Athens, where they meet two girls.
Rating: MA/NSFW
Author’s note: Headcanons: One of Leo’s escapades, and the last time Bastien hooked up with anyone before his night with Riley in An Unexpected Encounter. This takes place before Rules of Engagement.
Bastien knocked on Leo's door. He knew Constantine wouldn't want his son to sleep the whole day away. When he got no response, he knocked again, then opened the door. He frowned as he saw that the room was empty. Oh no, he thought. He searched the palace, but there was no sign of Leo. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and opened up his cell phone tracking app. He groaned as he saw Leo's location: Athens, Greece.
A call to the airport confirmed that the royal jet was not in its hangar. He immediately began making plans to fly to Athens. To his dismay, the next flight with an available seat was not until that evening. After breaking the news to Constantine, he packed a bag. Throughout the day, he kept monitoring Leo's location. Finally, he departed for the airport. Once he arrived, he checked in and went through airport security. He cringed as he reached the gate and saw that his flight had been delayed.
By the time he arrived in Athens, it was late. He rented a car, then checked Leo's location again. He drove through the city until he reached the area that the app's GPS had pinpointed. A neon sign with the name Dionysus caught his eye. Bastien shook his head. He had been stressed out all day, and Leo was having a good time partying at a nightclub.
He parked the car, then walked into the club. As he made his way inside, he surveyed his surroundings. He didn't see Leo on the dance floor. He headed towards the back of the room. Once he neared the bar, he spotted Leo with a pretty dark-haired woman. Leo's face fell as Bastien approached.
"Come on, we're leaving." Bastien turned from Leo to the woman. "I'm sorry, but he can't stay."
"I'm not going anywhere." Leo downed his drink, then reached into his pocket and handed the woman some money. "Could you get us some more drinks, please?"
"Does she even know you're engaged?" Bastien asked Leo as the woman walked to the bar.
Leo shrugged. "She knows who I am, so she probably heard."
"Lady Madeleine won't like this," Bastien reminded him.
"She knows I don't love her. Besides, how will she know? It's not like you're going to tell her, right?" Leo looked at Bastien pointedly.
Soon Leo's companion was back with the drinks. She handed one to Leo, who immediately took a sip, then looked to Bastien. "You don't want me flying the plane home under the influence, do you? And I don't think you'll be able to get us a flight tonight. So we're staying here."
Bastien had to admit that Leo had a point. He'd just have to keep a close eye on Leo and take him home tomorrow.
"Hey there, handsome."
Bastien turned around and found himself face to face with another pretty dark-haired woman who was holding two drinks. She smiled at him and handed one to him. "I'm Ioanna." She motioned to Leo's companion. "Sofia's roommate."
Bastien took the drink from her. "Thank you. I'm Bastien, Prince Leo's bodyguard."
Ioanna winked at him. "Want to guard my body instead?"
Bastien blushed deeply. He wasn't used to women being so forward with him. Ever since King Constantine had hired him, he hadn't really had time for relationships. Since he didn't have many friends, he didn't have many opportunities to go out and meet people anyway. He didn't really want to go out alone. He was the quiet type and didn't like approaching strangers.
Leo laughed at Bastien's embarrassment. "Go on, have some fun."
Bastien took a big gulp of his drink, which turned out to be a rum and coke. "So much for nursing this," he muttered as he noticed the decrease in volume in his glass.
"Oh, you're drinking tonight! I'll make sure of that." Leo smirked and looked to the others. "What do you say we play Never Have I Ever?"
"No," Bastien groaned. "I still have to drive." And they barely knew these women. What if Leo admitted to something scandalous and they sold the story to the tabloids?
Sofia moved closer to Leo. "You guys can stay at our place tonight. We only live a couple of blocks away."
"It's settled, then." Leo paused, thinking. "Never have I ever worked for a king."
Bastien took a sip of his drink, then glared at Leo. "You're trying to get me drunk, aren't you?"
Leo ignored the question. "You're next."
Bastien tried to think of something that Leo hadn't done. He didn't want the prince to get too drunk. "Never have I ever had a pet ferret."
Ioanna took a drink. "I had one when I was younger." She smiled at Bastien. "Never have I ever had sex in a hot tub."
Leo quickly raised his glass. His eyes widened as Bastien slowly did the same. "Was this at the palace?"
Bastien shook his head. It had happened when he and his last serious girlfriend, Juliette, were still together. They had broken up just before he became a guard.
Sofia reached out and stroked Leo's hair. "Never have I ever slept with a prince."
"Not yet." Leo leaned in and kissed her.
By the time they left the club, everyone was at least a little tipsy. Leo and Sofia held hands as they walked to the girls' apartment. Once they were inside, Leo pushed Sofia against the wall and kissed her deeply.
"Get a room!" shouted Ioanna.
Reluctantly, Leo pulled away. Sofia took his hand and led him into her bedroom. Bastien sat down on the couch.
"Can I get you anything?" Ioanna asked him.
"How about some water?" He'd already had enough to drink, and he was technically still on duty.
Ioanna poured herself a glass of wine, and got a bottle of water for Bastien. Soon she was sitting by his side.
"Thank you," he said as she handed him the water.
"You're welcome." She smiled and placed her hand on his thigh.
He looked into her eyes. "We're going back to Cordonia tomorrow. I'm not looking for a relationship. My job keeps me busy, and I just don't have the time."
"That's OK. We can still have fun tonight." She moved closer and pressed her lips to his.
It had been so long since anyone had kissed him. He gave in to temptation and kissed her back. They made out on the couch for a while. Suddenly they heard loud moans coming from Sofia's bedroom.
Bastien turned red. "This is awkward."
"Let's drown them out, then." Ioanna took his hand and led him to her bedroom. Once they were inside, she loosened his tie and took off his jacket. They began to kiss again, and she unbuttoned his shirt. She kicked off her shoes and pulled her dress over her head. Bastien stared at her as she stood before him, wearing only a red lace bra and matching panties.
"Do you like what you see?" she asked him.
"Oh, yes," he replied, breathing heavily. He could feel himself growing harder. Ioanna moved closer and guided him to her bed. As she unzipped Bastien's pants, a more practical concern popped into his head. "Do you have protection?"
Ioanna reached into her bedside drawer and took out a condom. "Right here." She set it down on top of the nightstand, then pushed Bastien down onto the bed and climbed on top of him. He wrapped his arms around her, unhooked her bra, and pulled it off. He cupped her breasts with his hands and began kissing her neck.
He felt her tugging off his boxers, and he moaned softly as she grasped his hardness. His cries grew louder as she lowered her head and began to suck on him. She was making him feel so good, better than he had in a long time. Finally, before he could lose control, he grabbed her hair and pulled her head back.
"Let me return the favor," he said to her. He slid her panties down and rubbed her clit as he slipped a finger inside her. He flipped her over so she was lying on the bed. He kissed her chest, then her stomach, and then lower. Once his head was between her legs, she began breathing heavily. Her panting turned to moaning as she grew wetter.
Bastien reached for the condom and put it on, then climbed on top of her and thrust himself inside. Their hips began moving together rhythmically. He began to thrust more rapidly as she grabbed his ass and pulled him deeper inside. He felt the heat surge within him, growing hotter, until he finally exploded.
He rolled off her, and she lay in his arms. Soon they were both asleep.
Bastien and Leo stayed for breakfast the next morning, but then they had to head back to Cordonia. Leo wrapped his arms around Sofia and kissed her passionately.
Bastien turned to Ioanna. "It was a pleasure." He leaned in and kissed her.
She pulled him closer. "Same here."

Alimos Marina: The perfect starting point for boat trips along the Greek coast
Among the numerous Greek marinas, Alimos is one of the most strategic when it comes to organizing tours and boat holidays in the Aegean Sea. Its geographical position, combined with a truly remarkable capacity of berths, make it a particularly popular port for yachtsmen who flock to the Greek routes in the summer months.
Although this is not in all respects a five-star marina, because it is open to all types of boats and lacking a level service, it makes up with easy access to the port and a great location near the capital Athens.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN ALIMOS
How to get to Alimos Marina
Alimos Marina is among the largest marinas in Greece. It has 1000 fixed berths on the quay and is one of the best-positioned ports because it is located in the southern part of Athens, a few minutes from the port of Piraeus, the largest port in Greece.
Its location is highly sought after by boat rental companies who have made it the ideal starting point for trips to this part of the Mediterranean Sea.
More precisely, Alimos is located on the southwest coast of the Greek Attica region and north-east of the Saronic Gulf. Its location is very convenient because it is 15 km from the center of the capital, 8 km from Piraeus, and 30 km from Athens International Airport. This facilitates the flow of tourists who pass through here to embark for the Aegean Sea.

The characteristics of Alimos marina
A large amount of berths in this marina gives the certainty of always finding a free place to moor the boat. Alimos can receive boats up to 40 meters long even if the maximum depth near the quay is 6.5 meters, which is more than enough to accommodate even the largest yachts.
Some berths have access to water and electricity, there is ample parking where you can leave your car, radio service (channel 71 UHF), and showers with hot water and toilets. Unfortunately, there is no supermarket inside the marina, but one can be found not far from the port.
There are a few Greek and Italian restaurants nearby, some of which also deliver on board. Inside the marina, there is a snack bar instead. Finally, a fast-food restaurant is located just 10 minutes away on foot.
Approaching the Alimos marina requires some attention as this stretch of sea is the preferential lane to reach the port of Piraeus and is therefore beaten by hundreds of ships of any type every day. The advice is therefore to contact the port in time through the dedicated VHF channel and let them guide you. The entrance to the port is marked by lights.
Also not to be underestimated are the winds that generally blow from the north in this area and can also be relatively strong.
Access to the port is allowed 24 hours a day.
Once set sail from Alimos, there are many routes that can be traveled. Two of the most popular destinations are certainly the Saronic islands and the Cyclades islands. Let’s see briefly where they are and why it’s worth navigating to them:
The Saronic Islands departing from Alimos
This archipelago, less known than others, is located between the northeastern coast of the Peloponnese and the west coast of Attica. There are seven wonderful islands in the Saronic Gulf. Among them, we suggest Aegina, Poros, and Hydra. These islands share a very clean sea with enchanting coasts and a pleasant atmosphere given by very hospitable inhabitants.
Hydra: The atmosphere on this island is chic and refined and its fame has attracted celebrities such as Onassis and Sofia Loren. It is also defined as little Capri. However, despite its reputation, it is not an island for a few people. Its peculiarity is tranquility. Here cars can not circulate and you enjoy a much less hectic kind of life.
The ideal place for a peaceful break.
Poros: the verdant island on which, according to mythology, Theseus was born. It offers interesting artifacts from ancient Greece and a very rich archaeological museum. The sandy beaches of Mikro and Megalo Neorio are characteristic.
Aegina: it was a large ancient trading center. Sculpture experienced a significant development on the island and the famous Aeginian ceramic vases are still very popular today. The city of Aegina, the capital and port of the island, is an attractive neoclassical town with typical colored houses.
The Cyclades Islands from Alimos
The Cyclades archipelago is located in the heart of the Aegean Sea.
Among the best-known islands, we find Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Milos, Amorgos, and Folegandros but if we were to count them all we would discover over a hundred islands placed to form a kind of circle as their Greek name indicates: Cyclades.
If you are planning to sail between them during July and August, be aware of the very strong north wind called Meltemi which blows these months.
If we had to choose which islands are worth visiting on a boat tour, our choice falls on the following:
Santorini and its white-walled and cube-shaped houses distinguish the two main cities, Oia and Fira. Two villages perched on top of the cliffs and overlooking a crater of an ancient underwater volcano. Watching a sunset here is a unique experience.
Paros means beaches, not only white but of all kinds, but also traditional villages and typical alleys where you can get lost among colorful shops and dine in the evening with fresh fish and beer.
Mykonos means parties during summer. On beaches like Paradise and Super Paradise, loud music plays. Its huge nightclubs attract famous international DJs and stay open until morning. If you have a party mood, you can’t miss it!

A low roar makes me jump as I stare over the city. I look up to see the belly of an aeroplane soaring above us. The vibrations are pretty violent, and I almost fear for the ruins surrounding me. After nearly two hours on a coach, this is the Heraklion that greets us: hot, busy, eclectic. Just one of the stops on our tour of Eastern Crete.
While I understand the need for an early pick up for this particular trip, it doesn’t mean I like it. Thankfully the air is cool at 6:30 am while we wait for our ride, and we are quick to doze off in its cushioned seats. Halfway to our destination we stop at a roadside café in the middle of nowhere. The driver grabs a much needed coffee, while the rest of us make the most of the fresh doughnuts and orange juice on offer. Tummies full and legs stretched, we quickly doze off again for an hour or so until our driver wakes us up by sharply breaking in a car park. This alerts us to our first: no trip to Crete would be complete without a visit to Knossos.
The last time I came here I was four years old. Now, after studying Classical Civilisation and ancient literature as part of my degree, it is a site I have been desperate to revisit. The Sunday morning heat is uncomfortable but the place isn’t manically busy yet; just a few guides marching groups through narrow spots like the ‘Room with the Copies’ and temporarily blocking them. The swallows that are perched and nesting above doorways do make for good entertainment though, especially when they begin dive-bomb unsuspecting tourists below. The place is certainly fascinating however. The grand staircase and royal apartments offer insight into the sheer scale of the site. My musical background draws me the ‘theatre’ where I take a snap with a well-known travel mag to try and get featured (it doesn’t work). The backdrop to the ancient palace is also stunning, rolling hills and lush green trees framing the site, adding to its grandeur. Yet I must confess myself a little disappointed: while the sheer age of the site certainly makes it impressive, there are elements that dim its raw legitimacy. Patches of red paint mark ‘re-creations’, and square windows have been added in during some points of its excavation. I may sound ungrateful, ignorant even to some; don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful for the preservation of the palace, along with other similar sites across the globe. The re-painted frescos across the palace, made to look suitably aged, are very well executed. I guess I just had an image of a palace whose original architecture had been almost completely preserved, or lay in near complete ruin with its age being the focal point, not some hybrid sitting in-between. Some of the more disparaging sights created by other tourists: a man has been employed to sit a particular spot and shout at people attempting to take pictures stood on top of one of many giant urns, and a gentleman is yelled at after wandering around with a cigarette in his mouth. It is a place that I need to come back to in the low season, I feel, away from the tours and masses of tourists that come stomping through the gate just as we are leaving. Away from those that come here just because it is on some list of places to visit or a hotel excursion. And away from the heat.
Our next stop, however, fulfils any further questions I may have of the site itself; a short drive into the city centre of Héraklion leads us to the Archaeological Museum. The first three rooms immediately grab my attention, the bright lights making all the gold displayed in cabinets glitter. Our guide book states them as “luxury objects from the Neolithic settlement of Knossos and Prepalatial tholos tombs of the Mesara, as well the burial complexes of Malia, Mochlos, and Archanes”. Any grandeur the palace of Knossos may have lost is certainly compensated for within its safely stored treasures, the pinnacle object for me being the Malian golden bee pendant, displaying Minoan taste at its finest. There is even a stunning replica of the Knossos palace, which can rival Leavesden Studios’ miniature Hogwarts in terms of detail. My favourite element of the museum, however, has to be the Phaistos disc. The earliest known example of Minoan text, the disc is believed of be of a religious nature, possibly a prayer to a Minoan Goddess (thanks to a 2014 study). In the museum though it sits isolated, both sides displayed in a glass cabinet while a single bright bulb shines above it, making the clay almost appear gold and shimmering. I manage to grab a quick snap of it (don’t worry, I’m allowed to), and smile as a little girl with a very expensive looking camera patiently waits for people to move out of the way so that she can get the perfect picture.
Walking beyond these sparkling treasures, I learn that the museum is very strict: some exhibits cannot be photographed since they have not been formally published yet, which is fair enough. It is also amusing to see grown men flinch at a woman’s bark of “be quiet!” when the level of noise in each room gets a little high, the echoing reprimand reminding me of being told off in a school assembly. Though I am glad to not be the subject of her shouts, it does not deter me from getting as close as I can to each exhibit, beautiful frescos such as the ‘Bull-Leaper’ and a stunning Gold Myrtle wreath proving yet more insight into life inside Knossos.
By the time we’ve finished in the museum, we don’t really have time to explore the city. There is a chance, however, to grab a coffee and the first slice of ‘real’ baklava I’ve encountered since being in Greece. It should seem fitting then that it is the biggest slice I’ve ever seen. Savouring every crumb I can, I’m amazed by the juxtaposition of the city that surrounds me. We’re in the old part of tow, ruins and tired looking buildings dotted around us, while aeroplanes glide low into the nearby airport, vibrations making the air buzz, and giant ferries hum in the port, destined for Athens. Settling back in our comfy seats for the long drive back, we expect to arrive at our hotel just before dinner. But just an hour into the journey we make an unexpected stop in Réthymno, Crete’s third and ‘middle’ city.
“We stay here for a bit. No longer than 45 minutes. Go. Go wander.”
We obey our guide and step out into the surprisingly cooler air of the port of Réthymno, dark clouds above us signalling imminent rain, while a chilly breeze is a welcome breath of fresh air. We walk up a slight hill and are suddenly in the old part of town, the small harbour greeting us echoing Chania’s charm and character. We can see a maze of narrow streets ahead of us, but whether it is the early morning finally catching up with us, the extensive travelling, or the Sunday afternoon attitude in the air, suddenly the canopied bars lining the harbour are incredibly inviting. We pick one with comfy sofas right next the lapping water, old ships tethered up to our right, resting for the day before the tours of the coast begin again tomorrow. Orange juice is again the drink of choice, though the choice of food on the menu is extensive. The table next to us have opted for a fresh fish platter, which seems to contain a myriad of shellfish, squid, swordfish, and others that I don’t recognise. It looks fabulous, though the cats loitering next to the table seem to be getting the lion’s share, perhaps due to on being very clearly pregnant. The hum of a Harley accompanies our quiet drink, speeding away as we had back towards our own ride. We spot other restaurants making the most of the quiet time of day before the crowds roll in, setting up stunning displays of today’s offerings, live crab and lobster attempting to scuttle away before their claws are banded shut.
Relaxing into the last leg of our journey, I try and remember everything I have seen today, all the treasures and artefacts, everything precious and ancient. Suddenly I become very thankful for the guide book we picked up in Héraklion. Yet it is this last stop that has proved to be the most curious, a place that I have seen signposted but never thought of visiting. As we leave Réthymno the heavens open, and I decide I definitely want to come back here, for a meal at least.

Live from Michigan
The Boy and I just returned from Ann Arbor, where we went so he could check out the University of Michigan. It was a discovery trip for him and a nostalgia trip for me.
My parents both went there; it was where they met. It was the early 60’s. He was a graduate student, she was an undergrad. She embraced the U more than he did; to this day, she’ll break into a chorus of “Hail to the Victors” at the slightest provocation. When I was college-hunting, she laid out the ground rules: anywhere I wanted, but if I went to Michigan State, I’d get no help from her, and if I went to Ohio State, I was excommunicated from the family. Anything else was fine. In Ann Arbor, that line of reasoning makes sense.
Shortly after I went to college -- a small liberal arts school in New England that didn’t trigger any alarm bells -- she moved back to Ann Arbor for a job close to her parents. I spent several college summers there, sometimes working for environmental groups and once doing an internship in the Mayor’s office, where I discovered that I didn’t want to be a lawyer. (Ruling out possibilities is one of the seldom-noted, but very real, payoffs of internships.) Although I was of traditional college age, and I was surrounded by U of M students, I was never a student there. One group used to be based in the Michigan Union, so I spent a lot of time there, and I got to know the local bus system pretty well. Schoolkids Records and the original Borders Books were favorite hangouts. For a few years in the late 80’s, Ann Arbor was a sort of home base, if not really home.
When I share that with TB, of course, I might as well be talking about Periclean Athens. He has been a fan of U of M sports for years, despite my near-total indifference to NCAA athletics. As he prepared college lists, Michigan kept popping up. I knew from our Boston visit last year that there’s no substitute for actually seeing a place; Boston U didn’t live up to his expectations, but Northeastern exceeded them. I didn’t want him to idealize Michigan, only to have another Boston U experience, so we planned a trip. His school closed for Rosh Hashanah, so we went.
Without knowing I was doing it, I spent the first hour or so of the visit pointing to various buildings and saying variations on “that used to be…” until it became clear that that was enough, thank you very much. Point taken. This trip was about him.
One of my Mom’s friends who still lives there hosted us for dinner on Sunday, along with her kids and grandkids and a cousin who is a current sophomore at the U. The cousin reminded me a lot of TB’s sister, The Girl, so there was a level of trust already. They spoke glowingly of the U across the generations, including the current one. (The cousin referred to her membership in a student club called NERDS - “Not Even Real Drama Students” -- who put on plays. It was exactly the right note.) So far, so good.
We did the official information session and tour, of course. It was a rainy Monday when classes were in session, so I thought it would offer a representative sample.
TB looked at the facilities, listened for options, and tried on the place for size. I looked for signs of vitality, and found them almost everywhere. (One exception was a kiosk outside of the Lorch building. It had bumper stickers on top for political figures -- Perry Bullard and Lana Pollack -- I remember from the 80’s, as well as a few “Reagan-Bush ‘84” ones.) We both noticed the cars parked along the various streets and in the parking garage. At BU, we saw a lot of Porsches and Mercedes; it was off-putting. In Ann Arbor, as in Pittsburgh, we saw a lot of Hondas and Fords. Much better.
We had to do a few landmarks, of course. We hit Zingerman’s deli, because that’s what you do. And we stopped by the stadium and took his picture in front of it. It holds over 100,000 people, and is apparently the largest stadium in America. It’s not my thing, but he was thrilled.
I hadn’t really put it together until we were in the Detroit airport to head back, but we were flying on Tuesday, September 11, in the morning, on Rosh Hashanah. The airport was weirdly quiet. As we stood in the TSA line, everything stopped, and someone on the loudspeaker announced a moment of silence. Apparently, someone else with microphone access didn’t get the memo, because the moment of silence was filled with “This is the last and final boarding call for flight xxx...REPEAT, this is the last and final boarding call for flight xxx…” As soon as the boarding call ended, so did the moment of silence. If you’ve never seen an entire airport roll its eyes at once, it’s quite the sight.
He was a little wistful on the way back, declaring that the senior year of high school is all well and good, but he’d really rather be in college. He can’t wait.
Mission accomplished.

10 things they don’t tell you about Greece (in no particular order)
Recently I saw a video about things they don’t tell you about Korea and I thought it’d be fun to do the Greek version
Most foreigners know Greece as a beautiful sunny country with amazing islands and beaches that also has a lot of ancient monuments. In this post I’m going to take you behind that facade and present the problems of a permanent resident.
1) If you don’t like heat, Greece is not the ideal destination for the summer. I mean it, this year we had a heat wave and the temperature rose up to 45 degrees. Because of the climate change, this will only be deteriorated during the next years and I’ve heard that Greece is predicted to become a desert in the future. If you don’t mind high temperatures though, I have to say that I admire you…
2) Zebra crossings are not effective. Drivers will rarely stop for you to cross. It’s up to you to find the moment when no car is coming, otherwise you might stay there forever. I remember when I was is Malta and England, I would wait to cross the road and cars would stop immediately- I thought it was funny…
3) We don’t need CCTV cameras since we have old ladies in balconies. Yeah, this is very annoying and it happens mostly in the summer, cause the weather is good. And they just sit, for hours and watch who’s coming and going. They are not even trying to hide it, they just stare!
4) Every road is a parking space. I’m talking serious, you can see a parked car almost anywhere. Parking on pavements is the least. In a wide road (or not) 9 out of 10 times one lane is closed due to parked cars. And that one time is probably a holiday when most people are out of the cities. Lately I think this has gotten out of control and they leave their cars wherever they want and it’s convenient. Also, drivers these days (I’m talking for Athens definitely) are very careless and we have a lot of accidents- tragic
5) Our economical state is not at all good (but I guess you already know that). If you’ve done a little bit of modern Greek history, you’d realise that since the revolution of 1821 and the independence around 1830 (if I’m correct), we have never been very organized and sooner or later we’d start a civil war because of loans and money in general. Furthermore, when we began having governments, their leaders weren’t really wise enough in my opinion and Greece would always end up in a disaster. We got our first loan, I think, right after the revolution of ‘21 and since that time we’ve kept borrowing to pay back and that’s more or less the cycle that’s got us in this terrible state today. *sigh* Our political leaders are like dumb and dumber and every year we have a new, more stupid one
6) You have to fight to get on and off a bus. Okay, I might be exaggerating… First of all, you can step on and off from whichever door you want (front or rear). That’s why there’s a lot of shoving most of the times, especially if the bus is crowded. Now a funny embarrassing story of mine: I was in Nice, on a bus and at some point I had to get off but only the front door opened. I don’t remember why but it was a stop for people to get on only I think. Long story short, you’ve probably already guessed it: I got off from the front door and the driver was like “You don’t get off from here” but I was already out and decided to pretend that nothing happened. I’d like to appologise to that driver, sorry I’m a clueless tourist…
7) Restaurants and products that look fancy and have labels and menus on the pavement written in English ARE NOT good! I look at the oil, honey or any other local product sold in the airport or near tourist attractions (those tiny containers that cost a fortune) and laugh. Also these restaurants I’m saying have very bad quality food, overpriced in order to attract clueless foreigners. This might be the case in other countries too though
8) Time is just a number. Well, yes, nothing really happens on time in Greece. From events and bus arrivals to get togethers and TV programmes, everything here has a delay.
9) Buildings that costed a lot of money to be built are not in use or even maintained properly. Probably not many people care about that, but when I think about it, it drives me up the wall. This is what happened to all the facilities from the 2004 Olympics because we don’t have enough money to utilise them and we hadn’t thought of making them like the ones in London. You know, you do what you wannna do during the Games and then you just store everything somewhere or not.
10) We have, in my opinion, the worst education system. Not only is it old-fashioned, but also wrong, very wrong. Instead of helping the students and preparing them for the job market, our system just makes students want to kill themselves, without realising the benefits of school. What’s the result? Pupils don’t respect teachers, the classroom is never quiet during a lesson and schools are being vandalised all the time.
As you can probably tell, I don’t really love my country… But I believe there are many people like me out there. However, I am thankful for the fact that Greek is my mother tongue (and no, that’s not from google translate, it’s an actual phrase, for those who might have not heard it before) because I understand that it’s quite a difficult language to learn and also it has no accent or word order and pronunciation restrictions, thus making it easier for me to learn other languages.
Don’t get discouraged by my words though. You might not mind all these and you don’t have to really, if you’re just visiting for the holidays.
Finally, I want to thank anyone who actually read that and even laughed a bit or understood the struggle XD and I appologise for any mistakes…
