The disrespect to the captains armband! The really did hate each other!

I’ve been having Southgate thoughts. Not tactics. It’s safe.

One of the things Southgate is credited with its “changing the culture of the England team”. From the rabies infested northerners who hated each other and the south (except David Beckham) and the southern boys who loathed and in some cases looked down on the north (which was pure jealousy becuase of the split of winners medals for a while). (I am also over simplifying.)

This was hand in hand with the England team opening up the media and going from a very guarded relationship to having huge amounts of access. (Sort of.)

And this is true to an extent. But I wonder how this this is also the change in football. All those kids that have gone through the premiere leagues academies, that have media training and don’t have the attachment of playing most of their football at one club, or their hometown club. (Not one club men exactly, but less trades).

Also the rise in sports psychology, being more media savvy and even the fact that people don’t really expect anything approaching sincerity or vulnerability when players speak. It’s okay that there are some jokes and a couple of anecdotes.

And while there is a lot of access to the players, interviews, TikTok’s, etc it is very stage managed and has zero “challenging “ moments.

And I want to be clear I don’t expect players to do any press I pay for the football games. Just… Southgate was probably the right man for the time but it’s not just his ability to gel with players that changed the England team.
