Love me some angst. Post-ISWM pt. 2

Prompt: “I can’t sleep. Can I sleep here?” / “It’s just you and me.”

You didn’t go down to the planet like the others, preferring to stay on the Invincible II where you could see it and protect it. It had been some days since you’d last seen a wormhole, but the creeping feeling that you’d be sucked into another dimension at any moment had yet to fade. You couldn’t eat. You couldn’t sleep. But you could pace the bridge, staring into (literal) space, pretending you were okay.

“Captain?” 

You turned. Mark stood at the door, refusing to meet your eye. He shifted his weight back and forth, shuffling his feet. “I can’t sleep,” he blurted out, when you didn’t say anything. He gestured to his cryopod, just to the right of the door. “Can I sleep in there? I’m . . . more comfortable there.”

You kept your expression carefully blank even as a maelstrom of thoughts crashed into your mind; Mark here, for decades, entire lifetimes, with nothing but himself and the ship, looking for a solution. Looking for you to be a solution.

“Captain?” Mark asked, and you cleared your throat; you’d been silent too long.

“Of course,” you said, hoping your voice was steady. “You can sleep wherever you want.”

For a moment Mark looked so intensely grateful that you had to avert your eyes. You heard his quiet footsteps as he plodded to his cryopod, and thought even those footsteps were exhausted.

“Do you ever-”

You turned. Mark had the cryopod door open and was half-in, leaning out to talk to you. 

“Do you ever think about how it’s just you and me?” He asked. “Just you and me who know, I mean. What happened.”

Of course you did. It was all you thought about.

You paused a moment to compose your answer. Mark’s stare remained on you, unwavering. 

“It is just you and me,” you said carefully. “But it is you and me. You’ll never be alone with what happened because I know, too.”

For the first time since you’d destroyed the universe, Mark smiled. “Thank you, Captain.” He said. “That makes me feel better.”

He climbed fully into the cryopod, its interior glowing faintly as it booted up. As the door shut and latched you turned back out to look at the massive planet below, glad Mark found your words comforting but wishing you felt the same.

Mouthwashing got me in a bit of a chokehold rn, ans what do i do when i'm in new fandom chokeholds? Think of how it overalaps with my other fandoms yeah that's normal :]

But for real i cannot be the only one seeing the parallels bettween ISWM and Mouthwashing: Both take place in space, deal with the themes of isolation/insanity, making the wrong choices when you think it's right, having a hero/villain complex, just to name a few. So figured i'd illustrate that here with redrawing one of the Mouthwashing scenes with Engineer!Mark and The Captain instead, replacing Jimmy and Curly! :D

BY THE WAY- I am NOT saying that Mark is as bad as Jimmy is, even if i do see some overlap in their characters, mainly wanting to remain the noble hero in it all, and making terrible choices but believing it to be right. The difference between them though is that Mark genuinly thought he was doing the right thing, but just didn't have enough true knowledge of the situation to realize he was wrong, and when he does, he is genuinely crushed and feels regret and guilt for what he did, wanting to truly right the wrong, wanting to take responsibility, by following someone else who knows better (The Captain) even if his trust in them was shaken. Jimmy is...not. He knows the bigger picture, but still makes choices just for his own benefit, constantly hides behind the hero persona even when it's clear he's not, "knocks down" people he believes are/were higher then him rather than following along, never truly takes responsibility and....let's face it done worse crimes then Mark will ever do- Just wanted to clear that up :]

Also can you tell i've been thinking bout Mouthwashing a lot with that little character analysis i am very normal :]

But uh one more thing is that i am really damn proud of this piece?? Like- The posing took me minute but think i got it across well, was fun drawing my Canon Captain design again since it's been a while, and hOLY SHIT I DUNNO HOW BUT I LOCKED THE FUCK IN FOR THOSE FLAME EFFECTS H O W -

Further notes: This is another visual novel game, but unlike Where is Markiplier? it's relatively short and linear. The art for the game includes images from ISWM as well as some original ones, as seen in the screenshots above. There are some light horror elements, but no jumpscares, and hopefully a few laughs here and there.

“Of course.” You nodded toward Mike and remembered showing common sense in public.

As you joined everyone this morning, Captain Rita Secada leads this briefing once Mike sits down with his partner and best friend Marcus Burnett.

Time passes once more and you leave with details on that future assignment, but Mike stands in this hall while talking on the phone.

“You good?” Mike whispered to the caller and your heart raced. “What? Damn, okay. Take it easy, all right? See you tomorrow.”

“Is everything all right?” You offered genuine concern when Mike hung up.

“Armando's out for the day. Dammit!” Mike shook his head and immediately left this precinct, upset.

Mike also married this remarkable person, Christine, last year. The well-versed physical therapist eased Lowrey's shooting rehabilitation.

After returning to Miami for good, Armando Aretas stayed with Mike, his biological father.

“He's still in the guest room.” Christine whispered to Mike at home.

“Thanks, babe.” Mike kissed Christine's cheek and headed upstairs for his son.

“Hey, it's me.” Mike carefully knocked on the guest room door.

“One second…” Armando seemed exhausted despite taking this shower to clear his mind.

Wearing this shirt and sweatpants, Armando emerged from that guest room. Nearly bloodshot eyes watched Mike across the short distance.

Lowrey knew this exact problem: Isabel's birthday marked the calendar.

“No pressure, but you can always talk to us, man.” Mike settled care. “Need anything?”

“Space.” Armando genuinely offered his own truth.

“Got you. I'll head back downstairs.” Mike stepped away and left his son, giving boundaries.

The next day, you see Armando walking toward you, but his exhaustion is palpable enough to calm down this grudge. You know much better.

“Hey.” Armando greets you before sitting down at his desk.

“Sorry.” You've finally apologized, not even dramatic, though honest and brief.

“I understand.” Armando takes your word and moves on.

The future is mysterious, but your hatred no longer matters.

How did you first meet the gang?

it were long ago as far I as I can remember...

I woke up on an unfamiliar bed, at first I thought I was in another story Mark created but no...

Engy or the Mark on Invincible II knock on my door, handing out an paper about something like "Space camp"

I hesitate but I go through many crazy thing before so I agree, not knowing he not the Mark I know

I don't know what I was doing, I live goalless...

Then, one time I decide to go outside and not waiting for the "space camp" anymore...

that when it hit me...

It's not Mark story...

People looking at me and whisper to each other...

I ran to a newspaper shop, they look confuse because such long time since anyone buy their newspaper

my head spining...

It get heavy...

My eyes feel wet... It tear... So long...

It been more than a century... Or more...

It real... I saw My name on a very old newspaper... missing... Damien... Missing... Celine... Missing...

No...

after that I have to learn everything again... Even things that new to me... 'cause I know if I don't learn it now, I will get in trouble when I join the "space camp"

About 1 year before the event, I get to the place and get to meet the head crews, I use fake name so their won't suspicious me... and somehow I got to be the captain...

I get to live... Not normal like the 1920's but... No fight... No control from anyone and... friends...

some of my own headcanons about @/qjel-01's ISWM monster!Captain AU:

monster captain can change their size slightly (based on the drawings of them with Mark but also outside of the Invincible 2 and how small the ship is compared to them)

the dark appearance and speckled pattern allows them to blend into the darkness of space and distant stars, when eyes are closed they can sometimes seem almost completely invisible

Captain has some degree of control over their gloopiness/solidness

they have a uniquely keen sense of direction, and very good vision

they are very old, and have travelled through many different galaxies

they are able to survive not just in the vacuum of space but in most planetary atmospheres and environments

they are accustomed to just flying through space for a long time without settling anywhere but they like to investigate planets from time to time

on some distant planets, there are civilizations who started to worship them, although they never really understood why

they get very curious when they come across a new species they haven't seen before

when they first met Mark, he was on a mission on a smaller ship with a small crew; something had failed and they were left drifting until someone could come get them. the enormous creature carefully dragged their ship to the nearest human space station

they kept hanging around space stations and flying alongside ships that Mark was on and the two somehow became friends❤️ they love and trust each other very much

human captains and crew members started accepting the alien creature's guidance and help

whilst Mark was busy building the Invincible II, the government and space agencies on Earth were having trouble selecting a captain to lead the mission of starting a colony on a new planet

eventually, Mark managed to convince them that his giant alien friend would be great at leading the crew

The Captain can be quite playful, but is aware that they need to be careful not to hurt the tiny humans :)

is an android!! look at the robot go!!

very quiet, kinda nonchalant and standoffish but never in a cool guy type way, more like aloof, i guess? his brain is full of elevator music

has emotions, and he can detect he has them but not really what they are or mean

like i put in the ref sheet, i imagined he'd like making music with music pads or midi fighters, but of course only when he has time

ok, so i might have gone a little crazy with this one but HEAR ME OUT

i imagined that if he were to be a part of the story, that in some alternate universe L1X would realize that all the wormhole buisness happens because of Engineer. and as his job is literally to ensure the safety of the colonists, he decides to jump into the wormhole looking for Engie. this chase would get more and more frustrating tho, as L1X can find many Marks but not Engineer, and stresses as the more time he takes to find Engie, the more that the colonists will be hurt/traumatized. not to mention the betrayal, i mean, L1X would probably think that Engie meant what he was doing. In the end tho, i imagine that he wouldnt have a big part in the ending (i like that the captain and Engie have their moment), but that after all of it got resolved that he'd still remember everything that happened, so i guess more trauma for the poor android :(

and poor L1X is completely in love with this cat. if it sits on his lap he feels so much emotion towards it he cant bring himself to move it. he has a back pocket on his pants specifically designed for the cat to sit in while he works. you cant get it away from him.

someone who worked on him once tried to take the cat away from him and he lost all will to live. Engie and Gunther had to go get the cat back so that L1X could actually work again.

idk why i designed him to look kinda like a porcelain doll, but it looks pretty cool! tho obvs he's made of some stronger material XD also, he's made to look kinda weirdly human, so his "blush" is painted on.

the light blue lights are illuminated parts that show the inside of the wiring. whether the color can be changed to others like those rgb lights remains to be seen.

and finally, his weapon of choice is usually his two laser guns, though he knows how to fight with any weapon B)

aaa these three were so fun to do, im so happy with how they came out! although i have to admit there was a fourth idea that never really went anywhere. cause if we got lix in all areas of the ship, an alien!lix isnt that farfetched. it wasnt a bad idea at all, i just didnt have a good idea for it, but it could totally be made XD! maybe someday ill make it...

“Captain’s log, stardate one point- actually, Mark. What’s the date?”

Mark scoffed. Planted his hands on his hips. Leaned forward in that way he did when he was utterly convinced he was right. “This isn’t Star Trek, Captain.”

You turned and waved both arms at the eerie world in which the wormhole had spat you into. “Isn’t it?”

“Captain.” Mark said from behind you.

“I mean-” You gestured to the curled, blackened trees littering a gray landscape piled with ashy dunes. Fog pressed in around you; you couldn’t see anything but your immediate surroundings and the trees, even with the luminescent glow of the portable wormhole generator. “This is totally a Star Trek episode.”

“Captain!” Mark pawed at your arm, forcing you to spin-

And see exactly what he was going on about: a gigantic figure was rising above the trees, swathed in gray and black, a magnificent deer skull with empty, gaping eyes bearing down on you while around its head wove massive antlers that stretched so far above they disappeared into the sky.

You gawked, while Mark squeaked out, “I think we need to get out of here.”

A giant hand, spindly and clawed, swept from the fog, reaching toward you, and you snapped out of your awe. You began slapping wildly at the wormhole generator stuck to your hand. “That’s a great idea. Let’s leave.”

But it wouldn’t respond. You poked at it, clawed at it, all the wild Mark clung to you, all but climbing you like a tree. “Captain, Captain-”

“I got it!” The hand was getting closer, seeming to move in slow motion. It was bigger than you. Bigger than you and Mark combined. “Fuck! Work, you damn thing!”

Finally, it did, and the wormhole opened, a great mass of whirling blue-black that swept you away moments before the hand passed through the spot you were standing.

You and Mark tumbled to the deck of the Invincible II, right in the middle of the bridge. You lay on your back, panting, the adrenaline surge pounding in your ears, while Mark rolled over onto his stomach and made noises.

“That was not the fucking warp core,” you muttered when you eventually regained the ability to breathe.

“Definitely not a Star Trek episode.” Came Mark’s reply. “Shit was too scary for that.”

You gasped out a laugh. “I never want to do that again. I quit.”

Mark managed a snort. “And I’ll be right behind you.”

thoughts on the poppy playtime pt. 3?

I'm so proud that Mark is learning to read. It's tough to struggle through words you don't know, but the more you try the more you learn and the more you know...something about half the battle I think?

Sorry, couldn't help it. I'm guessing this is a follow-up on the last ask about the ego hints, in which case: I thought it was interesting.

I guess the big thing was about 7 minutes into the video, where Mark tells Ollie/Gregory "Things are just happening a little out of order for me at the moment, I'm kind of experiencing multiple realities all overlapping." (Sounds like a typical Thursday to me.)

More under the cut which I had to move up to here because Tumblr keeps rearranging all the photos and putting them one by one instead of a cluster like in the draft. It also keeps moving the read more link around, so who knows if it'll actually be here.

And then we get several cuts, each about a frame each, all from ISWM:

In order, we've got the guy in the woods from the Hee Hoo universe, Cecil H. H. Mills, Cryptid!Mark from the timeline where you mocked him for crying (how could you, Captain?), Abe, Chef, Old Man Mark at the restaurant at the end of the universe, Dorene Whitacre in the void, the campfire scene, Lady aiming a gun in your face, and the Invincible II seen from the outside.

I think the reasonable response would be to assume this is one of the editors slipping in a bunch of ISWM references after an off-the-cuff remark. After all, the second year anniversary is coming up in a little over a month, and Mark's been known to drop hints to go back and watch his larger projects before ("When's the last time you visited Yancy? He misses you, you know" or something similar.)

But eh, let's have fun with it and keep going.

Because I think we could tease out some more (very probably unplanned) references to ego stuff.

Take the very beginning of the video, during the elevator bug that started Mark's spin off into other realities. While Poppy and Kissy Missy have trouble with gravity, Poppy continues to speak to Mark--her voice seemingly coming out of nowhere as he gets farther and farther away. Cue Mark begging her to "Get out of my head!"

A similar scenario actually happens in Wilford Motherlovin' Warfstache, where Abe is monologuing to himself while driving and Wilford, in the backseat, intrudes on his thoughts. Abe tells Wilford to get out of his head and Wilford tells him to stop shouting without either one actually saying a word out loud, then Abe almost runs into a truck. During a series of red gas induced hallucinations about 11 minutes in, Mark responds to "Poppy's" question and says, "I don't know, how am I alive?"--something Abe also questions during WMLW, until Wilford snaps him out of it.

During the multiple realities reference, Mark mentions not being able to separate fact from fiction, something that comes up again later during a second round of hallucinations when "Poppy" asks, "Do you even know what's real?"

Difficulty separating fact from fiction is a recurring problem for Wilford, and even makes up a central theme when the WAIA is speaking to the viewer during The Warfstache Automated Interview Automaton video.

About an hour and a half into the video, after Mark, eh, successfully defeats Catnap, he says, "Remind me why I was doing this in the first place, because I don't recall," slipping into the Warfstache voice as he does so. Wilford doesn't exactly have the greatest memory, or really know why he does most things it seems like.

(He also slips into the Warfstache voice after he gets the finger gun, but that's par for the course every time Mark gets a surprise gun in a video game and starts getting shooty.)

Back to ISWM, we have the Catnap fight. Or more specifically, Mark's unfortunate choice of words, "And I wait to do it all over again." Cue it becoming the recurring phrase during a montage of Mark's failed attempts to beat the boss until, after an unknown number of retries, finally succeeding.

What is that, if not the exact same thing that the Captain goes through In Space? Whether it's the ultimately futile attempts to save the ship in Part 1, or your choice in the warp core that sends you all the way back to the beginning to try again?

When Mark is greeted by Ollie/Gregory who has the audacity to say things like, "Wow...you did it," "You must feel pretty good," and "This win is yours," he immediately breaks out into a storm of cursing.

Very much the same reaction we see in the Captain after failing and being sent back early in Part 1, but especially after obtaining an "ending" only to go into the light and find themselves right back in the cryopod again.

This is the hand gesture of someone (silently) cursing their existence.

Mark slowly turning to stare into the camera while going through the vents (twice) and suggesting he could come crawling out of the screen is just normal Mark behavior though, not sure what else to say about that.

I truly cherish Tony's relationships with these three. I know it's been complicated with them over the years (mostly during Civil War I and II, ugh) but I just love all of them so much. What I don't love, however, is Carol's new marching band looking outfit. What's wrong with the classic Captain Marvel outfit?

It's also super sweet that Tony asked Stephen to safeguard Emma's book at the Sanctum. I'm actually starting to like Emma/Tony? They have chemistry.

Invincible Iron Man (2022) #11

I imagine the first time Ness and the other egos met they were all confused because Ness is just like. A normal guy. No trauma, no sad backstory, nothing. (btw I love your stuff!)

Oh, definitely! Matt is relieved that Ness is an alter ego that has a normal backstory and one he can have a nice conversation with. No mentions of murder, taking over the world, digging up mysterious bones, or hot dogs or clowns.

The other egos… well… they would at first be skeptical. How can this average waiter with no outstanding, traumatic, or cool backstory be a Matpat ego? Meanwhile, Ness is just mesmerized with the whole existence of alter egos, and the shock he felt when he was an ego himself to a YouTuber. It made him question his existence for a while.

Eventually, Detective will be the first one to accept Ness with open arms. He may not have a normal backstory, but he is also one of the sane egos. Detective might be a little envious of Ness because he was normal, but it was for a short time and he considers Ness to be his friend. Ness is fascinated with the adventures Detective went through, and how smart the guy can be. As Detective finds clowns delightful, Ness is terrified anything circus related, so whenever Detective mentions something during the Circus Arc, Ness is freaked out like the other survivors.

Hermit is also instantly tackle Ness into a hug and welcome him as a friendo. Would show him all his bone collections, his bats, his family, his island he used be in isolation for 20 years which caused his sanity to forever be lost by lack of human interaction- all the good stuff. I’d think Ness is someone who loves unusual things, so he would be curious about the kinds of bones and built skeletons Hermit would have. And he of course would meet the ego’s family, where they would confidently say he’s one of their favorite egos.

Mack sees Ness as inferior. He’s just a lowly waiter, while Mack is the Captain Head Engineer to one of the most advanced space ships in the human race, why would he see the newbie as part of the group? Well, because of Ness’s love for unusual things of course. He has never seen a space ship up close before, and he definitely never interacted with an astronaut, so he would instantly ask so many questions about The Invincible II and what Mack can do as an engineer. Mack would get caught off guard by the waiter’s enthusiasm, but took it to stroke his ego more as he grinned condescendingly and bragged on about his captain’s ship.

Madpat takes one took at Ness, and pulls out his flamethrowing chainsaw. In an affectionate way of course! He respects people who work in the food industry, as he of course owns a restaurant himself. Of course, he kills his employees after awhile, but that’s irrelevant! Mad already made Ness his third best friend (After Hermit and Warfpat of course), but Ness more or less fears Mad to the core, and tries to stay away from him as possible. However, Mad claims Ness is now stuck with him, and drags him to his wacky and bloody adventures. Oh god, someone call Mike another pizzeria killer traumatized his boyfriend.

Darkpat doesn’t like the other egos, why would Ness be any different? Though, he wouldn’t mind having a lackey by his side to do his bidding. He forces his hatred for everything down to get Ness’s trust. Ness is slightly uneasy about the whole vibe Darkpat gives out, but is still fascinated about the whole reality breaking entity. Detective would protect Ness from Darkpat, but the entity would pretend to feign ignorance about his accusations. Curse Ness’s curiosity and love for the unknown! Now Dark’s made a new evil plan to brainwash Ness and use him for his very evil and deadly bidding!! Mwhahahahaha!!! (His plans always fell short)

Warfpat is so happy to have another lab rat ego he could have fun with! He could his him as a puppet! Or a pet! Or bend his mind into insanity! Or warp his reality into nothing but chaos! Or-! Yeah… Matt smacks Warf for trying to already abstract Ness’s mind. Ignoring his intentions, Ness is friendly towards Warf, but only because he feels like if he isn’t, Warf might switch his vital organs around. Warf pouts at his restrictions, but still claims he can still have fun with his new toy friend!

Overall, half of the egos sees Ness as an escape from their messed up lives, and the other half sees him as a puppet to use for themselves. And Ness is still excited about learning what these egos can give his life to make it more adventurous.
