Following on the post about trusting our guts about gaydar and celebrities...
I've batted nearly .1000 when it comes to predicting a celebrity's sexual orientation just from media clues. I think partly it's because I don't make the "guess" that often: Only a few celebrities really ring the clue phone (yeah, lack of representation sucks), but I also think the other reason is because LGBTQIA folks don't get it wrong very often.
I mean, it's pretty important that our instincts are right, after all. We could truly be risking our lives on a wrong guess in real life. We have to be incredibly careful AND pretty darned good.
So, I was trying to think of someone who pinged my spidey senses that I was COMPLETELY wrong about... and I came up with only one example:
Tumblr media
Kate Mulgrew.
Despite driving the daydreams of legions of 1970s lesbians (Rosie O'Donnell, I'm looking at you), Kate remains firmly heterosexual, in spite of the lesbian catnip she oozes from every pore.
Just look at her as Mary Ryan in her soap opera debut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She went on to do movies and the stage for a number of years, but she was hard to cast because she didn't fit the cookie cutter parts available at the time. She had a brief doctor series and some guest star spots, most notably on Dallas and Cheers.
But when they cast her as Captain Janeway? Come on!!
Tumblr media
Look at her!!!
Tumblr media
Every woman loving woman in all the quadrants wanted to be her coffee cup!!
But the man boys at Paramount decided the show needed some spank appeal for the 14-24 male demographic, so they brought out their Space Barbie, Seven of Nine, to introduce some gratuitous sex and nudity.
Tumblr media
"Only one problem, boys," said Mulgrew with a smirk....
Voyager now had a willful, headstrong, wildly intelligent "alien" snatched from her natural environment and penned up in a rigid, paramilitary system that she had to learn to navigate, understand, and ultimately be tamed by... and it was headed by another willful, headstrong, wildly intelligent human, who happened to be female, too.
Tumblr media
The producers and writers claimed Janeway was Seven's mentor, a "mother figure" to the poor little space orphan.
As the J/7 fandom put it: Mother, my ass.
The subtext-- and soon the fan fiction-- wrote itself: Seven gets kidnapped back to the Borg? Janeway takes on a Borg cube with a ship a tenth its size. Failing Borg technology threatens Seven's life? Janeway goes "cortical node" hunting, even if it means killing a live (enslaved, sentient) drone to get one. Greater good? Screw that, Janeway's girlfriend is in danger.
Star Trek: Voyager went toe-to-toe with Xena, Warrior Princess as lesbian show of the decade.
And it wasn't just the show that made us all sure about Kate. The woman has the voice of a lesbian sex goddess and she's not afraid to use it. She flirts shamelessly with all interviewers and creates sexual tension with stage furnishings. She swaggers. She slouches. She has the greatest hand game in lesbian history!!
But through it all, Kate Mulgrew maintained (and still maintains) her heterosexuality.
And I still hope...nay, LONG!, to have my gaydar proven right...

I know nothing about Star Trek. I am intrigued by what I’ve seen on your blog. Please infodump on me /nf
honestly it’s just as bonkers as it sounds.
the plot for most series is just “antics on spaceship that’s here to make friends,” minus deep space nine (our captain has become space Jesus and now we need to save bajor from fascism) and voyager (oh shit we’re lost)
so all the crews are part of starfleet, the federation of planets’ military if the military was nice and did science and didn’t shoot people for fun. point is they try to make contact with other countries planets and help those who need it et cetera. and sometimes they meet Abraham Lincoln. it’s just like that my dude.
anyway the fandom became a thing in the 60s because the writers and actors somehow made spock and kirk really subtextually (honestly textually) gay for each other and people everywhere went “oh my god.” and it just kept getting more gay with more characters over the years and the rest is fandom history.
on a more serious note there’s some great social commentary sprinkled throughout all the questionable and funny episodes. like the jadzia/lenara kiss or the episode about police brutality that takes place in..2024. yeah. sometimes it’s like that and sometimes janeway gets turned into a lizard and has lizard children with tom fucking paris. I love that show.
if you ever want to dive into this wacky world I’d recommend starting with tos or tng, they start off a little slow sometimes but trust me it’ll get good. it always does.
anyway, in conclusion, I’m so sorry you have to see me trekpost. live long and prosper

after a couple months off, i returned to warehouse 13 this week and binged the whole third season.
some thoughts behind the cut - major spoilers for everything up to 04x01 (and also for 04x18- 05x01, for reasons that will be explained)
i can't believe pete's mom is captain janeway and his ex wife is seven-of-nine.
i was repeatedly pleasantly surprised by the new character jinksy! first it seemed like the show would find a cheap way to dispose of him, because obviously we don't need anyone to replace myka, because obviously myka will be back. but then he just stayed on the team, and i liked that. and i liked him. then he just casually came out as gay, and it was completely inconsequential, which is good. my favourite kind of representation is the kind that's not a plot point in any way. but then he got fired?? and changed sides??? and i was like "oh ok i guess they did find a way to dispose of him after all, just a little later than i thought. what a shame." BUT ACTUALLY NO he was undercover the whole time, yay! except then he died, and that's where we are right now. so... hm. claudia seems to have a plan, so i'm holding judgement on that development for now.
the entire concept of walter sykes was, frankly, a huge disappointment to me. i had a couple of days to ponder my own theories before i watched the episode with the baddie reveal, and i had convinced myself it would be valda*. i still think it would have made more sense, because of the regent inside knowledge. so when it turned out to be this random kid, that was a bit of a let-down. and then his plan - this VASTLY complicated, DECADES spanning plan, that required him to learn information that's even BETTER protected and even HARDER to obtain than "normal" warehouse information, ALL THAT - was just to GET INSIDE??? like hello?? what a dumb ass plan. sorry, but with the resources he had he could have walked in there 100 different ways, years earlier. i'm... yeah.
i've started season 4 now, and i'm getting increasingly giddy and excited to be meeting paracelsus again! 'xD 'xD 'xD because the thing is, as a die hard Tony Head fan i'd obviously already seen the four episodes that he's in way before i ever decided to start watching the show for itself. so there's certain things that i know that maybe i shouldn't know yet - but i also increasingly get the feeling that i remember less details than i thought i did. for instance i just looked at the cast list of those four episodes and apparently i should have already known leena and jinksy before i started the show, but i could have sworn i didn't. in my defense, it has been years - plus i only really had eyes for mr. sexy pants paracelsus anyway.
okay now, valda. like i said, i have some eclectic spoiler knowledge, patchy though it may be, and i think i know that valda is going to be a baddie at some point. i don't know why, and i don't know how - especially seeing as he's actually technically not even alive at this point - but anything is possible in this universe i suppose.

so it turns out you dunno as much about star trek as i assumed you did (i seen you reblog a few posts about it and thought you were a bigger fan). and tho star trek is like a big ol' franchise, for that osmosis meme, i'm sending you star trek and you can do with that what you will <3
You know what Sapphire I'm going to really try and flex my brain muscles for this one! I'm gonna see if I can do the whole franchise! Welcome to A Complete History of Star Trek, as told by someone who's seen the new films, like three of the old films, and a couple episodes of the original series, and is otherwise getting all of this from their friends and people they follow on tumblr!
We start with the original star trek! It's the one everyone thinks of when they think of star trek, with kirk, spock, bones, and all them lot! It's about the crew of a spaceship in the far future who go around exploring different planets and meeting new alien species. This also appears to be the premise of every other star trek show.
Kirk is the captain of the spaceship. I have it on good authority that despite what fans and the newer installments will try to make you think, he is in fact not an annoying womanising guy but is a very nice young man who respects women (and is maybe bisexual???) good for him!
The crew also includes his second in command, Spock, who is very logical except when him and Kirk are having gay moments. Then there's Bones, who is a doctor and talks a lot about being a doctor. There's Uhura, who seems to be kind of a girlboss and is in charge of... I want to say communications? I think she was part of the first interracial kiss ever shown on tv or something like that, which is pretty cool! good on you star trek! There's also a delightful russian man named Chekov, who was my favourite part of the bits and pieces I've seen, and a guy called Sulu, who is. there. I know nothing about this man.
The show is an episodic monster of the week show, where there's a new alien/threat of some kind in each episode. These threats include alien warriors called klingons, fluffy aliens called tribbles that can multiply infinitely, and a hive mind called the borg. dear god I am really hoping the borg is a star trek thing and not like battlestar galactica. A lot of the episodes are very horny, like the one where spock has to fuck someone or he'll literally die. This is despite it being made in the 60s when being horny wasn't allowed on tv, so good on you again star trek!
They also made some films based on star trek. The first one isn't very good, the second is about a villain called khan and is great! Spock dies in it, but don't worry, he comes back in the next movie! How? Great question, don't ask me. I think kirk's son also dies in one of these movies? Does kirk have a son? Did I fever dream that?
The most important film is the one where they go back in time to the 80s to save the whales. This was my favourite of the ones I saw, but I feel like nerds might hate it. It seems too fun.
After the original series they made star trek the next generation, which is all about patrick stewart as a new ship captain called picard. Much like kirk, he also has a second in command, but his second command is very impulsive and hot headed instead of being logical, so they have kind of the opposite dynamic. At one point, picard and kirk got to meet each other in one of the films.
Picard's crew includes a robot called data, who everyone loves!! Even I love him, and I've never met this man! He's a robot, and apparently he often comes across very autistic and/or aroace, so he's really racking up points with me! Other crew members include geordi laforge, who is besties with data and is blind and wears a visor that is presumably a seeing aid of some kind, and a klingon who's not evil like the other klingons!
After the next generation came voyager! This was the first star trek show with a lady captain, which was very exciting! Her name is Janeway and Voyager is mostly about straightbaiting the audience with her and her boy best friend (and also maybe time travel?)
Voyager was followed by Deep Space Nine, which was different to the previous star treks because it was set on a space station instead of a ship. It had many characters, one of whom was an alien called Odo!
Then they made Enterprise, which was also different to all the previous star treks because it was a prequel (presumably about the original crew of the enterprise) I don't think people liked it.
Speaking of things people don't like, they made a bunch of reboot films in the 2000s and 2010s! From what I remember of them I liked them quite a bit, but this seems to be a pretty unpopular opinion. They are very different from the original series that they're based on and don't characterise Kirk correctly and also benedict cumberbatch is playing a character who was originally played by an indian guy which is pretty weird, but at least they have a banging score courtesy of michael giacchino! What happened to that guy anyway, I feel like he hasn't had a memorable score in years. Come back michael. we miss you.
In the years since the reboots they have also made a few more shows, such as a prequel about a young picard, an animated series called lower decks which is more comedic than the live action shows, and a show called brave new worlds, which is the current series! They had a trans character for a bit but they got killed off, which people were very upset about.
and that's it. that's what star trek is!

Since my teens I’ve had a love affair with Captain Janeway. Today I finally have her essence marked on my body, as a constant reminder to be as strong, inventive, open minded, caring, thoughtful, intentional and determined as her.
I chose Janeway from Macrocosm because this is the era of Janeway I remember the most fondly. The energetic, curious, and hopeful version of her. It’s also an incredible episode that shows a physical side of her we don’t often get to see.
I chose concept art Voyager because this whole tattoo is not about TV realism (this is not a Kate Mulgrew tattoo), but instead is an artistic representation of the fictional world I am so fascinated by.
I chose the artist because she has a track record of drawing strong beautiful women, and her Janeway, in my opinion, is utterly beautiful.

who’s at your fantasy dinner party?
Tagged by @the-angry-pixie (hell yeah I’ll take part in the tag game you just made up on the spot)
Let’s say you have a fancy banquet table that seats 10. Real or imaginary, dead or alive, you can have anyone. Who are your 9 people?
Hoo boy. I’m tempted to make this a “How can I create the most drama possible? Who would hate each other the most?” party, but I won’t, I’ll take this seriously.
1) My late sister, Becky
2) Samwise Gamgee
3) Shane Madej and/or Ryan Bergara (I couldn’t choose between them)
4) Stephen King
5) Peter Jackson
6) Bryce Dallas Howard
7) Oscar Wilde... or Elton John (I couldn’t choose between Gay Icons)
8) Jenna Marbles
9) Captain Kathryn Janeway of the USS Voyager
That took me forever because I was hella indecisive lol
I shall tag @jamiejams, @shippinggirl2424, @winged-wolf-dreamer, @sarcasmismy0nlydefense, and @tea-for-one-please :)

N and U for the ask game! :)
meme!
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice): more seiftis, more xu, more nida (more minor characters in general tbh).
U- three favorite characters from three different fandoms and why i love them:
seifer, ff8: asshole with a heart of gold, chaotic chaotic, look at his dumb stupid face, also i love him.
captain janeway, star trek voyager: this woman made me gay and also made me like coffee. that’s all on her.
mulder and scully, the x-files: they count as one. they’re perfect. they’re wonderful, they’re amazing, and you can’t have one without the other. i will not be taking criticism at this time.
