so after a recent conversation with my friends we’ve come to a realization: fandom loves Slave Rights Advocate laurent trope. whether it be an arranged marriage au, a time travel au, an auguste lives au or any kind of setting where slavery is still in motion; it’s always laurent who opens damen’s eyes to the horrors of slavery and insists they can’t be with each other until slavery is abolished, that slavery is a deal breaker on whether they can be together or not. now i certainly don’t want to sound like i’m policing anybody’s creative choices but it’s become such a common trope in the fandom that it is baffling at this point because. here’s the thing. slavery isn’t one of laurent’s battles. at all.
allow me to explain further before i make people angry. it’s clear laurent is against the fundamental premise of slavery and finds it inhumane. but through the series (counting out taofc where he and damen are trying to build an empire together), he doesn’t actively fight or challenge the system or slavery. i don’t even think this is a hot take when you remember that he;
i. didn’t protect the akielon slaves in arles until damen begged him to and sold them to torveld for personal gain (which was the best course of action he could take under the circumstances but as i said, he wasn’t above using them)
ii. referred to damen as his slave constantly in both a technical and romantic sense
iii. got turned on by playing master and slave and master and pet
iv. used isander as a way to get back at damen: was fed by isander in the feast, stroked him, allowed him to kiss his feet and boots etc.
in fact here are plenty of instances where it’s clear laurent enjoyed the type of power he had over damen:

and here’s the only part where i can remember damen and laurent discussing slavery after damen’s identity is revealed and they have the possibility of a future together. as you can see, laurent’s attitude towards it is pretty neutral. he doesn’t approve, but it’s clear he’s not a passionate champion of the anti slavery movement.

let me make it clear that none of this is a criticism towards laurent. it’s important to remember that capri started as a slavekink fic (in pacat’s own words) and though it evolved, by the final draft she still kept some of those elements: like making the first night between lamen a romantic, sacred, precious thing between them; laurent telling damen he’s his slave by feeding him as a slave would, damen calling himself laurent’s slave as a sign of submission/love/romance before their first kiss, laurent saying damen is still his slave before sleeping with him… the narrative still eroticizes slavery to some extent and uses it as a vehicle of romance.
the thing is, laurent finding enjoyment in these practices is not the problem. when the fandom loves to pretend like laurent would be so disgusted by the idea of slavery (even though the text repeatedly shows he’s not) , that he; a perfect civilized blonde veretian angel would come to akielos and educate those barbarians about how horrible slavery is and damen would only open his eyes to the truth through laurent’s guidance, that’s when my issues start. because, like i said, this was never laurent’s battle and it pretty much reads like laurent is some sort of white savior, someone who comes to damen’s country to “fix” the problems of akielos without understanding their history, needs, or the region’s current state of affairs.
another very important thing to underline is that the whole slavery ordeal in the series was damen’s character arc, not laurent’s. he’s the actual slave in the scenario, and as much as laurent doesn’t like slavery, damen didn’t come to the conclusion that it was bad because of laurent’s preachings. it leaves a bad taste in the mouth that damen was the one who actually experienced slavery and faced countless humiliations in vere and yet people still insist on making laurent educate damen about why it’s wrong, even though he himself has never experienced slavery in his life. (one might argue in aus where damen was never sent to vere as a slave he wouldn’t come to the same realizations but that still doesn’t mean laurent would have a passionate agenda regarding slaves. at best i believe he would demand damen to stop sleeping with his slaves as they are monogamous.)
choosing laurent as The One who firmly stands against slavery is bad from a narrative pov too. making this specifically about laurent makes no sense because it's got nothing to do with him. it's not his country! he doesn't care about akielos the way damen does. everything about it thematically relates back to damen; who exists as a metaphor for akielos - any insult or injury done to him is an insult to akielos. he embodies it’s values and it’s people, and by becoming a slave he’s reflecting the current slave state of akielos, and through finding liberation for himself he’s also finding liberation for akielos. it’s a powerful symbolism for how akielos is changed and freed directly BECAUSE of his own personal liberation. laurent has nothing more than an intellectual interest in anti-slavery and he only ever begins to care about akielos because he cares for damen. but damen was raised with it and experienced it and cares very deeply about it. it’s his country! it's his story!
tldr; through the series, it was damen’s journey to experience what it was like to be a slave, to see the true horrors of this practice and decide he doesn’t want to rule his country that way anymore. so taking his agency and giving it laurent, someone who was neutral at best about slavery, feels incredibly insensitive and wrong.
#💬#meta#?#captive prince#like what is with this obsession on making laurent the perfect activist who’s always on top of current events#and damen the dumb ignorant jock who’s clueless about life#why is this such a common theme :)#also a reminder that i’m not targeting anyone specificaly!! this is a common trope and i just wanted to rant#shout out to my amazing girlies for helping me write this post ily angels

Capri II & Capri II S, 1976. The European Capri was marketed in the US via Lincoln Mercury dealers but it was simply badged as a Capri wearing neither Ford nor Mercury identities. The first generation had sold well but as the German-built models price increased with the increasing value of the Deutsche Mark against the US Dollar, sales dropped away and the Capri was discontinued in 1977

I need book recommendations please. I read captive prince and I’m losing my mind.
ooooh gladly!
so first of all, nothing really compares to CaPri, however i do have some - imo - very good recommendations that might have similar vibes.
The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley - historical (18th and 19th century) Fantasy. Amnesia and time-travelling, with a veeeery Laurent-coded love interest.
The Scottish Boy by Alex De Campi - historical (14th century) Captive/Prisoner and (reluctant) man who has to hold him captive, secret identity, political schemes, revenge, war
Solomons Crown by Natasha Siegel - historical (12th century), Crown Prince of England (Richard Lionheart) and King of France (Philipp II) falling in love despite their countries being enemies, political schemes, strained family relationship to the point of going to war against family members, allies to enemies to allies again
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland - not my personal favourite but still good, Fabtasy, outstanding non-european-centric world-building, anxiety rep, queer-normative, Disgraced Prince and his guard(s) having to uncover a political intrigue that could dethrown his sister, the monarch, nightly shenenigans in taverns while hiding their identity, forced proximity, kinda co-dependent relationship
Winters Orbit by Everina Maxwell - SciFy, Prince has to marry the widow of his cousin for diplomatic reasons who then gets accused of having killed his first husband, political intrigue, past abuse
Fence by CS Pacat and Johanna the Mad - graphic novels, sports (fencing), YA?, might be an entirely different setting but the character dynamics are reminiscent of CaPri/ you can tell Pacats writing
The Aeneid by Virgil - the great Roman epic. to this day im convinced Pacat might have drawn some inspiration from this (or possibly the Odyssee and the Iliad)
I hope that helps. Thank you for your ask!

TVR Vixen
Although the Vixen used the same chassis as the outgoing Tuscan, the significant change was the use of the 1599 cc Ford Kent engine, as found in the Ford Cortina GT, developing 88 bhp. The Ford unit was selected in order to keep prices as low as possible and because of supply problems from BMC.
The Cortina unit was less powerful than the MGB engine which developed 95bhp, but it was also lighter. To use up remaining supplies, the first twelve Vixens built still received the MGB engine.
The Vixen’s bodywork was also slightly revised, with the bonnet having a broad flat air intake scoop and the rear of the car was fitted with the round “Ban the Bomb” Cortina MK I tail lamps.
The S1 was replaced by the heavily modified TVR Vixen S2 in October 1968. The S2 was built with a longer 90 inch wheelbase chassis, introduced on the Tuscan V8 but which TVR had now standardised to address complaints about difficulty of ingress. The bonnet was restyled again, with some early cars having a prominent central bulge and later cars having twin intake ducts at the front corners of the bonnet. The tail lamps were updated from the round Cortina MK I style to the newer wraparound Mark II style. Also very significant was the fact that the body was bolted, rather than bonded to the chassis, meaning it could be easily removed for repairs.
The interior was improved, with a leather-skinned steering wheel mounted much lower than before. In a further attempt to improve the quality feel, the body was thicker and panel fit was improved.
In December 1968, TVR announced that two more models, the S.2 Sport and S.2 Super Sports would be available as standard. These models came with an uprated engine from Speedwell including fully balanced bottom end, ported cylinder head and two twin choke Weber carburettors, with the Sports producing 100bhp and the Super Sports 115bhp. Both of these models came with seat belts and leather steering wheel as standard.
The S3 continued to improve the car with a number of detail changes. The heat extraction vents on the flanks behind the front wheels were decorated with “Aeroflow” grilles borrowed from the c-pillars of the Ford Zodiac Mark IV and the Ford four-cylinder engine was now in the same tune as in the Ford Capri, producing 92 bhp. Instead of wire wheels, cast alloy wheels were fitted as standard.
The S4 cars were an interim model that used the TVR M Series chassis with the Vixen body shell. Apart from the chassis, there were no significant mechanical or cosmetic changes between the S3 and S4. Twenty-two were built in 1972 and one in 1973.
The 1300 model arrived in late 1971 and was built in an attempt to fill an “economy” market segment for sports cars. It was powered by a 1296 cc Standard SC engine from the Triumph Spitfire engine making 63 bhp, and its lack-lustre performance limited its sales success. Top speed was barely 90 mph. Only fifteen were built, all in 1972. The final six of these cars were built on a M Series chassis and the very last 1300 was also built with M Series bodywork, although it never received a “1300M” designation.

‘I’m sorry?’ ‘You sure are,’ Laurent agreed, ‘because if you’d looked any further down than my face, you’d have seen the very obvious rings on my finger.’ Jord looked down, and the way his eyes widened again was almost comical. ‘You’re engaged?’ ‘Count them, that’s two rings. I’m married.’ ‘Married?’ Jord scoffed. ‘To who?’ ‘To me,’ Damen said, appearing at Laurent’s shoulder.

Booklet featuring an essay by critic Jeff Chang
In the early 1970s, a kung-fu dynamo named Bruce Lee side-kicked his way onto the screen and straight into pop-culture immortality. With his magnetic screen presence, tightly coiled intensity, and superhuman martial-arts prowess, Lee was an icon who conquered both Hong Kong and Hollywood cinema, and transformed the art of the action film in the process. This collection brings together the five films that define the Lee legend: furiously exciting fist-fliers propelled by his innovative choreography, unique martial-arts philosophy, and whirlwind fighting style. Though he completed only a handful of films while at the peak of his stardom before his untimely death at age thirty-two, Lee left behind a monumental legacy as both a consummate entertainer and a supremely disciplined artist who made Hong Kong action cinema a sensation the world over.

The Porsche 924 was a much better car than it got credit for, but everything about it was a source of friction at Porsche at one point or another. It’s development, with VW, was a Wagnerian drama. Porsche purists hated it’s VW engine. Sales were good, until they weren’t. There would be no such histrionics when Porsche evolved the car into what became its second generation, the 944. Faced with a big dropoff in sales, Porsche upped the ante with a new engine and chassis and style updates which turned the rough-hewn 924 into the polished 944. This a nice early one, though sapphire metallic was a long-running color on U.S. models. Developed in concert with VW but ultimately sold only as a Porsche thanks to upheaval at VW, the Harm Lagaay-styled 924 was an excellent handler and pretty when it bowed in 1976. It just wasn’t very fast. It’s LT-van derived 2L four and high price were sources of constant criticism. In 1979, Porsche added a turbo, which helped, and until OPEC II it sold very well. Porsche immediately set up racing programs, but they didn’t get much urgency until sales began to slow in 1979. That very fall Porsche showed a Group 4 racer that became a homologation special and the best 924 - the Carrera GT. This flared, spoilered, seriously fast car set the template for what was to come. The 944’s styling, worked up by Roland Sternman and Steven Derrida working under Tony Lapine, looked a lot like the 924 racers. The racing program didn’t yield sales improvements, as the 1980-81 recession knocked Porsche for a loop. There was more to it, however. The 924 was too expensive to compete with cars like the Ford Capri or VW Scirocco, and when Porsche chairman Ernst Fuhrmann was replaced by Peter Schutz, the latter thought Porsche should put more value into the car. Furhmann’s arrangement with VW dictated buying 100,000 of the LT-sourced engines, a milestone that Porsche would pass in 1981. To reinvigorate sales, Schutz gave the 944 a Porsche engine, a 2,479-cc four derived from the 1981 Carrera GT LeMans car. It also used the GT’s suspension geometry. Despite it’s obvious 924 origins, the 944, which arrived in the spring of 1982, was popular from the start. https://www.instagram.com/p/CHyFBErlXW_/?igshid=v49s612jfh3e
