On Saturday morning I was up at the Cape Kidnappers plateau Gannet colony for a sunrise shoot. Ian Cooper, another local photographer organised the visit with the farm and asked if I fancied joining him. As the saying goes… It would have been rude not to! The morning was perfectly still without a cloud in the sky. As the sun rose the horizon turned all peachy in colour… Truly stunning! The image below was shot at that time and you can just see the suns first rays beginning to kiss the land. The Cape is world renowned and is home to the largest population of Australasian Gannet’s (Takapu), numbering 20,000 plus at peak times. The Takapu is one of three species of Gannet which belong to the Booby family and is spread over four main nesting sites – The Plateau, Saddle (this image), Whalebone Reef and Black Reef colonies.
