I hate it when companies do remakes or new CG art of old media cuz they usually lighten dark skinned characters and make characters’ distinguished nose smaller. LIKE HELLO?? THESE CHARACTERS WERE CONSUMABLE WHEN U ORIGINALLY MADE THEM!!

Long-ass post about what the fuck this machine might be:
Tumblr media
Screenshot by @geddy-leesbian and sent to me for research by @courtofparrots
So, what the /fuck/ is this damn thing? (And it’s side-quest: This fucking /shoot/):
Tumblr media
At first I thought the machine was some form of Vacuum Furnace since the shape and the possible intake shoot (which will give me hell this entire research process) looks like an incinerator and something to suck things into the incinerator:
Tumblr media
(Source.)
But the shape isn’t 100% right, and as CAPCOM need something to do a 1:1-ish model for the game, I scrapped it and moved on.
The next candidate made my heart hurt since it’s a Marine Waste Incinerator:
Tumblr media
The shape is similar, it has a box-like connection that I wasn’t able to find almost anywhere else, but no fucking shoot.
/However/, I think I’m onto something here’s a couple other models I found:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this heartbreaking? Because Luis is not only on a shoe-string budget in the middle of noplace, but he’s also having to use whatever the cult can scrounge up for him. I’m convinced he brought his little autoclave from a mainland somewhere, but he needed an incinerator.
They’re off the ocean.
Where there’s a will there’s a way, and Lord Saddler is demanding he makes a way using this hulking machine that isn’t even meant for use on land.
However, the one in Luis’ lab doesn’t look like it’s meant for use on a ship, and there isn’t that fucking spout.
Next, I followed the little tubes on the sides:
Tumblr media
And it looks a lot like they’re meant to be on a locomotive or a boiler:.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why would he need a boiler? I have no idea, ask a scientist. But, visually we’re getting closer.
I looked up what that black piece is for, since I initially thought the piece on Luis’ machine was for some sort of vault technology, housing a locking mechanism for keeping a vacuum seal in the case of the vacuum furnace.
Tumblr media
^This thing.
In boilers however, it tends to contain an exhaust fan/motor (iirc). Again, having a fan could work for some sort of incinerator and there’s no real point in having a vent/air filter right below it (the cylindrical thing) unless it’s dealing with something that needs a lot of air.
Now, on boilers and incinerators there tends to be some sort of (usually red) component on the front that /could/ be something that damn shoot connects to. Ex:
Tumblr media
That is a burner/igniter.
Tumblr media
^This is what it looks like on the inside.
Could the shoot be a hookup? I have no idea. I don’t /think/ so though, since the shoot looks more like a place to expell something (think coal from a coaling tower on a railroad). (In fact, this thought momentarily brought me down a rabbit hole of ‘what if it’s for some sort of coal refinement’? But I rejected that idea because then it would be more of a grinding machine and this is more boiler-incinerator-type-deal.)
My friend brought up a good point that maybe the shoot is for sucking up waste material.
Using my own knowledge of trades, I’m not sure that’s the case? Usually, if something has to go down then the spout will be tilted up so that it’s not fighting gravity. However, I am a city kid with a business degree, so we can safely shelve that idea since it’s outside my wheelhouse.
It was at this point that I realized the box next to Luis’ machine could be part of the whole device:
Tumblr media
The only times I’ve seen something like this with an attached cube it was on an electric steam boiler:
Tumblr media
And on the vacuum furnace, marine waste incinerator (already mentioned), and this medical waste incinerator:
Tumblr media
Which brings us right back around to incinerators.
So while I can’t find anything that has the damn shoot, here’s what I /think/ all the pieces of the machine are. (Again, I am not in sciences or in trade, so this is all I could find after a three-hour research stint that ended when I got too frustrated.)
Tumblr media
AND COMPLETELY EYEBALLING THIS NEXT PART:
The items on top of it are these little crates that I’ve only seen in workshops but the ones I’ve seen are roughly 26” across. Which makes this mystery machine ~78” Tall and ~91” Wide (not accounting for the angle it seems to be at).
Tumblr media
In closing, I think this is some sort of incinerator (wow, three hours of research just to be back at square one? First of all, rude. Second of all, I now know more than when I started so that’s fun for me!) and for storytelling purposes I want it to be a marine waste incinerator, built for burning waste onboard a ship or for getting rid of oil waste. This way it illustrates just how resourceful and flexible Luis had to be in order to /try and get his fucking tools to do what they’re supposed to/. His autoclave isn’t a true autoclave and it’s /tiny/. He’s working with an old acrylic glove box. He’s been given an oil waste incinerator off a boat and he has to make it /work/.
In short, this is what I do for fun and now I have to get back to work. 😊

so this whole thing with the RE9 leaks has put me in the unfortunate position of actually looking at REtwt and phew
some of these kids are really performative with their character preferences, huh.
"sheva rly needs to come back she's such an underrated character fr" no she very is not. sheva only exists to quell the outrage that happened when RE5 was revealed to be White American Chris Redfield going to a poor, urban part of africa and getting chased by "savage" black people and slaughtering the locals there. capcom has never said this outright, but i would bet all three of my cats that sheva did not exist until after the reaction to that very first RE5 reveal trailer happened, and that's why it took that game four more years to come out after that.
i totally understand the desire to have a badass black lady in the main cast, but we can do better than a token character who only got created for the purpose of making the white male protagonist seem less racist. actual literal "i have black friends" behavior behind her design and conception.
i look forward to seeing what RE5make does with her character because there's literally nowhere to go with her but up, but this whole "bring back sheva" thing is so
out of touch
with the reality of what this series should actually do in order to be more diverse.
give sheva the luis serra treatment in RE5make for sure. she deserves that much. but the focus should really be on crafting a black character that the devs actually care about and is integral to the story in a meaningful way -- possibly after the torch is passed from the legacy cast to the next generation so that that character can be part of the new flagship cast.

Holy Hell Capcom, You Did It.
Tumblr media
I didn't go into the Resident Evil 4 Remake with pessimism. If anything, my hype for the game had been pre-validated by Capcom's near absurd run on the franchise since it's soft relaunch with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. Coming into this remake we'd already been shown a mastery at both creating new experiences in this classic franchise, and reimaginations of two of it's older games (Say what you like, I think Resident Evil 3 Remake is a hell of a good time.), so why should we be surprised that Resident Evil 4 Remake is perfect? And it is perfect, a word that I often use to describe some of my favorite video games, but still a word I don't use lightly. It is a word, however, I would use to describe Resident Evil 4 Remake, and I'd use it in a multitude of different contexts. The games new tone is a perfect blend of the 2005 cornball adventure we all love, and the slow simmering horror that it was always obvious that cornball adventure was trying to create as best it could. Leon and Ashley's far more balanced dynamic is perfect, with Ashley now feeling like an actual character, rather than a slate to be looked after, which she sadly rarely rose above being in the original version. Luis is just perfect, and still a huge cornball, albeit, a cornball with some real pathos somewhere among the kernels. Every single one of Leon's goofy roundhouse kicks, and German Suplex moves, leaps off the screen with a perfect screwball energy that never stops being simultaneously hilarious and electrifying. Capcom took a masterful knife to the original Resident Evil 4 experience in ways that often seem to defy logic. As someone who has played through Resident Evil 4 an absurd amount of times, I never stopped marveling at every correct decision Capcom made in cutting out, or around, the different parts of that game to create this new experience. For every classic section that's in here fully remade with modern graphics and design sensibilities, there's an entirely new section or level that fits in so well with the game, you'd think it had been there all along. I don't know how they did it, or what amount of intensive playtesting it took, but Capcom seemed to inherently understand every fond memory I had of Resident Evil 4, and crafted this remake to those specifications. Every section, encounter, or weapon I liked, was here and ready for me to re-experience in stunning new fidelity and enhanced game feel. Every mildly annoying part I could take or leave, was left, leaving me with a veritable greatest hits collection of one of the greatest video games ever made. The pacing is immaculate, I never once got bored, and during every section I assumed I knew front to back, Capcom surprised me again and again. Even the games semi-infamous final third, The Island, that often gets cited as the only time RE4 went wrong, is edited down so incredibly, I was left stunned by the result. It's almost absurd to think that just a little over ten years ago now Resident Evil was in such a dire place, many of us were wondering if it'd ever be good again. We're now five games deep into an incredible renaissance for the series, and only just now have we hit new heights that I wouldn't have even thought possible only a few years ago. Honestly, if we can see something even half of this games quality, bring on Resident Evil 5 and 6 Remakes next. I have nothing but faith in Capcom's ability to knock these things out of the park. After Resident Evil 4 Remake, I have nothing but faith in Capcom, period.

Is it me or do some fans scapegoat Ada for Capcom not doing anything else with the RE female characters? Even though Ada isn't even allowed to appear in media without Leon (and even then, she doesn't always appear with him).
I wouldn't say it's just you, but I would say the latest Resident Evil content this year is stirring a pot much faster than when RE7 dropped when it comes to how they handle these characters and the franchise as a whole. They want to make everything more serious. They want to pander to certain groups of fans when it comes to character direction. They're trying to bring back the horror without understanding the spikes of comedy and cheesiness whether or not they were accidental is what makes the series so iconic, but that's a slightly different conversation. So, let's focus on Ada.
Listen. Ada has always been a character in a precarious situation when it comes to fandom. There's a lot of "interesting" qwhite people who love Leon so much they see her as a personal threat with their misogyny. She's a visible woman of color, which gets her hit with the racism. She's allegedly Chinese, as she could also be Taiwanese or Cantonese, or a different ethnicity since we don't even know her real name, so she gets hit with xenophobia overseas. She's also not a "nice" person who babies Leon, so she gets hit with the double misogyny from those same "interesting" qwhite people who never draw Leon with brown hair even though that's his canonical hair color. She's a woman so showing her as capable without the sexiness slapped onto her makes her "ugly" and makes the 3% of fans who yell about it the loudest cry and scream so much that Capcom will rope it back into her character however they can.
Then we have current fandom itself, and how it's changed, and how it's not changed at all. I saw a post I can't find at the moment stating the current waves of fandom have this new pattern with people who don't want to seem like they're misogynist or sexist, so they'll say the women characters are great and then do nothing for them. No rambling about them. Barely any fanart. Very little headcanons. The tiniest amount of fanfic, and if they get any of these things there has to be a male character the artist clearly favorites in the spotlight of the piece. The pieces of art that are women focused get half as much attention as the male focused pieces. Those same fandom pieces get 1/4 of that attention when the characters are visible women of color not at their sexiest, cutest, or palest form. The original poster I spoke of was obviously right. If you don't believe me, look at how many notes any "good" Leon post gets compared to the other women, and you'll start to see a pattern very quickly.
Ada is the easiest to vilify because fandom always hates "mean" women, women of color, and women point blank. Hell, the racist's vitriol was so bad they removed Sheva from various editions of the game cover of RE5 and left it as Chris or put Jill there when you can only play with her in the DLC. It doesn't help with how Ada's writing is handled over the years, that fandom loves to put her on a proverbial stake saying she took attention or a possible role from Claire, or Jill, or even Rebecca now that she's getting more attention. But they'll more loudly say how Ada is taking attention from Piers, or Luis, or even fucking Birkin. It's not entirely about how they diss and scapegoat Ada, it's the bullshit all around the diss they're making. It's about who they would personally slot in to replace her or any woman character, and why they would do that which speaks the loudest to me. If you pay attention, you'll see what wavelength their brains are running on when they drop that nonsense.
Now hear me out. I came into Resident Evil after watching all of Lupin III. Quick summary, it's an old manga that got an anime in the early 70s, and is still getting remade today about a group of thieves who steal expensive shit.
There's only 1 woman in the main recurring cast, Fujiko Mine, and since everyone has a gimmick, her's is sex appeal and that there's a 50/50 chance she'll steal the treasure from the group of men for herself at the end. No matter how many times she does this, Lupin III as a character loves her regardless. He knows that changing her means he'd have to change himself, neither of which would be a good thing, because change doesn't always mean improvement. She has been handled by so many men and a few women writers for the last 50 years I've seen all the possible ways a femme fatale can be written super well and super poorly. And even though she does all of the exact same shit as Lupin does, fans(new fans especially) will still call her a bitch. And I've had to call people out a million times with 1:1 canon comparisons to make them see it's the misogyny glasses they're looking through when they make this judgement about her.
This also means I came in looking at the Leon and Ada relationship from a completely different angle than probably 99% of the active members of the RE fandom on this site. I can see where she's written improperly for the chances she does get to appear, but I can see the potential in it, and I can see and understand how their relationship is structured the way it is. I do believe that Ada having time to herself without Leon in the game or Leon even being a priority is desperately needed for her character. I also think this narrative decision will scapegoat her further because fandom will say that attention should've gone to [Insert Male Character Here] that is an old character brought back or a completely new white guy in his 30s on the side of good who talks to another main dude for about 2 times if that much.
However, if anyone who read this far would like to see who's actually taking all the attention in an RE movie or RE game, feel free to do a tally for how many times each character gets to speak and compare the final numbers when you're done. For the games, repeated lines do not count to make it a little easier.

I gotta say I love that RE gets new fans with the remakes, but with some of these newer RE fans have also brought in the concept of “stans”, which I am now completely categorizing in a different group from fans. I am a huge Ada fan, but these Ada stans on Twitter are making it hard to enjoy Resident Evil content on there.
In Stan world if I want say I don’t like Ada’s new voice, or prefer OGRE4 Ada over the remake, or don’t love her new outfit then apparently “I have no right to call myself a fan” if I vocalized these opinions. I am Asian American myself and I did not enjoy Lily Gao’s performance as Ada. In my opinion, she had a few passable lines, flat and awkward delivery majority of the time, no chemistry with Leon, and most importantly NO charisma. Doesn’t matter how much much time Ada had in any form of RE media, she has always had presence and impact. In RE4’s main game, Ada didn’t have that many scenes either (although technically more than the remake), but even to people who didn’t bother to play Separate Ways, she always left an impression.
When the first RE4R trailer of her speaking dropped A LOT of people didn’t like her voice acting from the beginning. Then Ada stans would say “you can’t judge based on one line, wait until the game comes out” (as if that would somehow make her delivery better?), then the game comes out and a lot of people still didn’t like her performance, now it’s “she barely had any screen time, wait for Separate Ways”, moving the goal post again. Or it’s “she’s suppose to sound flat because she’s now a serious mercenary” Like was Ada not already cold and serious in RE2R?? I don’t remember her “sounding flirty” in that game at all, that was literally one of the reason people didn’t like RE2R’s Ada, for not being as nice as she was in OG2. Now there’s this belief that most people only didn’t like it because of some RE influencer and blamed her to take accountability for the harassment and bullying Lily Gao got, then the next day the Ada Stans go on to harass, bully, and passive aggressively hate on accounts that ship Cleon to the point they end up closing their account. I super ship Aeon too but jeeze. It’s just so hard to take seriously, but I guess that’s the current state of fandom culture now: “can’t take the toxic behavior of me defending my fave, then gtfo”.
Lily Gao 100% did not deserve to be harassed, I put all blame on Capcom. If they wanted to cast a new Asian VA for Ada they should have put in more effort to finding THE BEST fit person for the job, not the most convenient. I wish there was more noise on Patricia Ja Lee being Jill Valentine’s previous VA and mocap, because there’s a VA who did a great job, maybe they should have just gotten her to be Ada, but doubt Capcom considered any Union VA. Capcom in general after the VA Union strike have been cheap, and Capcom USA especially have been lazy. They have no respect for VAs, you expect me to believe they didn’t cast Lily Gao for convenience sake after not even bothering to bring back David Vaughn for RE8’s Chris Redfield and reused Jeff Schine instead?
Look, you can like Ada’s new voice, but to not understand why others genuinely don’t like it makes no sense to me.
Capcom nerfed Ada so hard in this remake but every Ada stan can make so many justifications for Capcoms shit decisions, writing for her, and having one of the weakest VA performances despite being a main character and one of the most iconic female characters in video games? The only time “Ada Nation” can band together for anything is when Ada is left out of stuff so long as she girl-bosses and serves cunt right? Who cares she has less screen time, who cares there was no Assignment Ada and she’s not in Mercenaries at Launch even though all that was included in the Game Cube release, who cares they gave Luis Ada’s moment of saving Leon from Krauser, who cares she was left out of all the promotion of RE4R, who cares that she keeps telling Leon to leave Ashley for whatever reason when she never interferes with how Leon does his job in the OG. Leon literally throwing real knife stabs that could actually kill her, he hasn’t seen her in 6 years, he has no idea if she could block them or not, but I guess all that is suppose to be visually appealing than him being able to disarm her. Oh Ada can’t black flip kick the gun out of Leon’s hand bc it’s not realistic but Leon can jump around like he’s Cloud Strife in the saddler boss battle? And Ada offered a ride to Leon at the end and not Ashley, I don’t know how Ada stans can see where it implies that Ada offered a ride to both of them? And why do we have to read in between the lines when they could have had her ask if they were both coming in the script? They had no problem putting that badly written scene of exposition with Wesker at the end to show players how much of a “good and reformed” person she is. I wouldn’t give Capcom that much credit. Why does them improving Separate Ways, which should already be expected of a remake, justify cutting/downgrading everything else?
You can say you like her new outfit more than her OG, but then to go and say it’s more practical now, when really it’s still unpractical as hell too. Say you like RE4R Ada but then to say she’s less sexualized than OG4? Lily Gao implying she characterized Ada to be less sexualized, when her Ada basically offers Leon sex if he drops his mission and leaves Ashley. Past Adas has never propositioned anything like that before EVER. Like ok RE4R Ada doesn’t wear a cocktail dress now, but instead now has hella ass shots for days, they made her boobs larger, and gave her character model boob physics, all of which wasn’t in OG4.
Had to get this off my chest, if you made it this far congrats lol. This is just all my opinion, you don’t have to agree with me, I’m sure a lot of you don’t.
