SonSon (1984) ソンソン
Date: June 1984 Platform: Nintendo Entertainment System / Arcade / Wii Shop Developer: Capcom / Micronics Publisher: Capcom / Romstar Incorporated Genre: Action / Platformer Theme: Fantasy Franchises: SonSon Aliases: SonSon / Son Son II / Capcom Generations / Capcom Generations 3: The First Generation / Strider 2 / Capcom Classics Collection / Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded / Minna to Capcom All-Stars / Rockman ×over / Capcom Arcade Cabinet / Street Fighter X All Capcom / Capcom Super League Online / Capcom Fighting Collection / Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium Type: Retelling / Crossover
Summary:
Son Son is Capcom's tribute to a Chinese legend called Xiyou Ji, meaning 'Journey to the West', considered to be one of the four classic pieces of Chinese literature. The main character in Xiyou Ji is Sun Wukong, or, when the words are pronounced as if they were Japanese kanji, Son Gokuu (hence the name Son Son).
All of Son Wukong's companions besides Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) are snatched by a demon and it's up to the two of them to chase after the demon and rescue them. The game auto-scrolls with multiple platform "tiers" and the player must switch between them and attack incoming enemies with their weapon. By switching tiers, the player can collect score items.

Top-down Planes Galore
Over the last few years, thanks to my wife's English side of the family, I've visited a fair share of interesting British museums. One of these is the Shuttleworth Collection, a neat place that features an array of planes from the early half of the 20th century. If you're ever in Bedfordshire and have a hankering to see biplanes from the 1920s, I really can't recommend a visit enough. I wouldn't call myself an aviation geek, but there's something about seeing a World War II aircraft in person that stirred my imagination, and one of the souvenirs I bought from my visit was a cool pair of socks that had pixelated biplanes on them.
I specifically bought the socks because they reminded me of Capcom's 1942, the first entry in the 19XX series of shoot 'em ups, AKA shmups. Honestly, I hadn't played much of 1942 at the time, but I've always known enough about shmups to think of the game when I see pixelated biplanes. It probably stands out in my head as an interesting example of a Japanese company making a product where the whole goal is to blow up the Japanese. Yep, 1942 puts the player in the role of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilot maneuvering his aircraft through the skies of the Pacific Theater, on a mission to reach Tokyo and blast the heck out of everything. Apparently the game was made with Western audiences in mind, so I suppose we have capitalism to thank for a game that is both historically accurate and not historically accurate at all. (Yes, Japan lost the war, but I don't think any of the Lockheeds in the Battle of Midway had spray guns capable of shooting a billion bullets at once.)
I recently dove into 1942 and almost all of the other games in the 19XX series, mostly because I was inspired by my British nephew, who's recently been going on about planes for hours on end. You can play almost all of them via the Capcom Arcade Stadium compilations on Steam, which repackage classic arcade games and make them easily playable without the hassle of needing to fiddle with MAME emulation. (The decision to make each game DLC that you have to buy is probably questionable, but putting that aside, these packages are pretty okay.)
Anyway, I soon discovered that the original 1942 is the epitome of a 1980s arcade quarter gobbler, with a staggering 32 levels of monotony and some of the most annoyingly tinny background music known to man. It's fun to do loops around Japanese bombers for the first ten minutes, and I've always loved the power-up that gives you two flanking planes that help soak up extra damage, which would go on to be a series staple. Beyond that, 1942 grates at the soul and has not aged well.
1943: The Battle of Midway, and its slightly remixed semi-sequel 1943 Kai, are much better. Here, we bear witness to screen-filling tsunami attacks that can instantly wreck all enemies, a more forgiving difficulty level, and varied stages that don't consist of simply flying over the ocean and rice paddies. Everything's faster and a good deal more fun, and instead of solely taking down planes, now you've got boss battles against Imperial Japanese naval fleets, ending in a fight against the battleship Yamato. And thankfully, the tinny music is gone and replaced by battle-ready tracks that are nicely catchy.
This formula is refined even further in the later games, all of which loosen up on the feeling of "one American plane versus Japan" for a progressively zanier feel. 1941: Counter Attack ditches the Pacific Theater for firefights over European skies, and despite taking place in the earlier years of WWII, your pilot goes up against enemy crafts that are so extreme in size and flavor that they border on science fiction. You'll fire away at German rockets that look like they're designed to fly to the moon and tanks that take up a quarter of the screen. The end boss is a Horten Ho 229, the German prototype bomber that never went into mass production, yet is a formidable foe in this game that is sleek and almost alien-like in its movements.
19XX: The War Against Destiny takes that science fiction appeal to the maximum and says, "To hell with a historical shmup, let's go to the future with two X's, baby!" In an amusing move that would later be replicated by the Call of Duty series two decades later (when they jumped from WWII to the arena of Modern Warfare - and later Advanced Warfare), 19XX sees you taking on the Outer Limits, a terrorist organization that somehow has a futuristic army with hundreds of expendable fighter pilots. For the first time, you can choose between three different planes: the old school Lockheed P-38 Lightning (the well-balanced one), the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito (the heavy firepower one), and the Kyushu J7W Shinden (the speedy one). All of these planes are worthy options against enemies that scale in a ludicrous fashion, and one of the bosses in the later levels is basically a mech. It's great. And because the game runs on Capcom's CPS-2 arcade board, which also powered the Street Fighter Alpha/Zero series, the action is fast and clean to a degree that's very reminiscent of the company's fighting game output.
1944: The Loop Master is the last 19XX game I played, because it's the last one available in the Capcom Arcade Stadium. It takes the action back to WWII, but the gusto and fury of all the futuristic stuff exhibited in 19XX: The War Against Destiny is present and accounted for. Hello, my biplane can shoot lasers? Sure, why not! Technically, this one was developed by Eighting and not by Capcom, and all I know about Eighting is that they made the Bloody Roar games and Battle Garegga, another shmup with a cool soundtrack that samples the techno track "Jupiter Jazz," by Underground Resistance. They did a good job, and while 1943 and 19XX: The War Against Destiny stick out in my memory more than The Loop Master, I can safely say that this one features a little dude who parachutes out of your plane when you die. About time I finally saw my pilot!
Honestly, I'm not a great shmup player. I played all of these casually on my Steam Deck, and I never would've made a dent in them in the arcades. But there's something about the 19XX series that's appealing to me, at the very least on an aesthetic level. It's probably the highly detailed 2D pixelated artistry that goes into the top-down depiction of these warplanes, which are given the same slavish fanboyism that you see in Japanese mecha franchises. I think back to the several times I've visited Japan and been to antiwar exhibits like the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Minus a few groups of nationalist nutjobs, Japan's by far and large a deeply antiwar country - but there do exist otaku who nerd out over WWII-era tech, usually not in a "the Imperial Japanese Army was right" sort of way, but in a way that basically says, "the Yamato was one of the biggest battleships ever constructed at 70,000+ tons, I shall now proceed to write an essay about why that was cool." And you know, I can appreciate that attention to technical detail, just like how I can respect the planes on exhibit in the Shuttleworth Collection. So give the 19XX games a whirl if you like planes or simply dig fine artistry - and go visit the Shuttleworth and buy those socks while you're at it.

Xbox 360 XBLA titles without Xbox One /Series X Support, still available to buy!
Following our latest video on the Xbox 360 store shutdown, here is the full list of Xbox Live Arcade games still up to buy on the Xbox 360. If you haven't seen the video you can watch it below.
youtube
With the Xbox 360 store closing on the 29th of July, this list baring the odd error shows all the XBLA games in the United Kingdom Xbox 360 Marketplace Shop. That don't work on Xbox One or Series X and will be lost for good at the end of the month. Some have Xbox One releases, but many are Xbox 360 exclusive. Now the final price drop event on 360 is due to happen on the 16/17th of July.
It seems unlikely any DLC will get reduced so the expensive Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends DLC you will just have to pay through the nose for! If we get time we will try to cover on Demand Games and DLCs next week.
Note at present we are still notes games not all games with extra download content on XBLA are listed correctly yet same with Xbox One versions of some games. As we discussed in our previous videos using the website to buy content is next to impossible and we are buy content via the Xbox 360 in console store.
Warning as per our previous video about the problems we had with the Rabbids Invasions Season Pass. We advice users avoid season passes on the service most are broken.
Any mistakes or omissions please do let us know. Drop us an email, comment or send us a tweet. Also let us know about any Japanese, North America or other games not available in the UK on XBLA and still up and we will add them. Ghosts ‘n Goblins (Arcade)
Developed/Published by: Capcom Released: 7/1985 Completed: 02/08/2022 Completion: Beat both loops (with save states and rewind, yeah.) Version Played: Capcom Arcade Stadium Trophies / Achievements: n/a
Super Mario Bros., released a scant few months after Ghosts ‘n Goblins, has undoubtedly the most famous opening of any platformer ever. I mean, you can visualise that first goomba encounter perfectly, can’t you? I mean, it’s probably taught in every class on level design you’ll ever sit through.
But Ghosts ‘n Goblins has to have, if not the second most famous opening of any platformer, certainly the second most burned-in opening of any game in the minds of anyone who has ever played it. You know it–the gravestones. The endlessly spawning zombies; the ladders that lead to that second level, and, of course, the Red Arremer that kills you.
I don’t believe, honestly, that before playing this through now, that I’ve ever personally seen Arthur past that Red Arremer, and I’m sure I’ve played this game (and I guess, all the sequels that all open basically exactly the same) tens of times. I actually only have one memory of ever seeing beyond that, and it’s so vague–still being in university, being somewhere that had a Ghosts ‘n Goblins machine (unusual) and an older student mentioning that he used to be “really good at it” and getting to the beginning of the second level and no further.
(I can’t remember if he ever claimed to be able to complete it. My brain wants to fill in details like he had access to the machine because his family owned a chip shop or something that had it, but I think I’m making that up entirely.)
Basically what I’m saying is: everyone these days is saying Dark Souls this and Dark Souls that, but no one is saying Ghosts this ‘n Goblins that!
Because this really does live up to its reputation. I suppose before I go into that I should mention what a stunning release it is in context. It’s 1985, Super Mario Bros. hasn’t come out yet, so when we’re talking platformers you’ve got basically Pac Land to compare it against, and if you’re talking run-n-gun games, well, I don’t have to hand an earlier side-scrolling example, with only Sega Ninja (or Capcom’s own Commando) really something you can compare this to–even something like Konami’s Rush ‘n Attack wouldn’t be released for months.
And the above frankly don’t hold much a candle to this if you were walking into an arcade, with Ghosts ‘n Goblins featuring some stunningly detailed and varied graphics for the time. It’s not just that you saw the opening of the game a hundred times without ever getting past it–it’s that it’s dripping with a sense of place. There’s even that iconic opening!
I’ll admit though… I’m pretty sure I’d rather play Pac Land, and even Sega Ninja’s level of brutality is preferable to this. I’ve read that the version of Ghosts ‘n Goblins I’ve played (Capcom Arcade Stadium) suffers some input lag, which might be partly why I found this so, well, unpleasant, but it’s also just that this ain’t no Super Mario Bros..
I do love to point out that the original Super Mario Bros. has pretty quirky movement every time I mention it, and I’ll do so again here, but Ghosts ‘n Goblins, for all its visual flair and level variety, does unfortunately feel like the pre-Super Mario Bros. game it is, with clunky, slow and difficult movement. Hero Arthur might be able to throw lances like nobody’s business, but he’s slow to turn, his jump is static, and climbing ladders is an insane risk as he loves to not actually fully get off them.
Honestly, this isn’t so bad for the first four (of six) levels, which I managed to finish with practice and letting myself save after each level. The game is insanely stingy with checkpoints (no checkpoints before bosses. Come on!) and barely ever hands out replacement armour, but all hell breaks loose on the fifth level as you have to deal with climbing a tower full of flying enemies where you literally can’t take a hit or you just won’t survive the final boss, Satan (basically just Red Arremer, but a bigger pain in the arse.)
It actually gets worse because I was playing the version Capcom Arcade Stadium defaults to: the US revision, which goes out of its way to not be finishable. Once you hit the sixth level, you face off against two unicorn enemies at once (where it’s impossible to not take a hit) and then have to face two Satans who have twice the hit-points of the Japanese Makaimura! And you have to beat them with the shield weapon, which has barely any reach!
I won’t lie. I was able to make it to the first Satan with saves, but after a while battering my head against that brick wall I had to bring out the rewinds… and bring them out I did. I just abused the shit out of them and still barely managed to finish this, it’s so stupidly hard. I probably should have played the easier Japanese revision (also available on Capcom Arcade Stadium) but more fool me.
I will say this–I do think the AI of the Red Arremer and Satan enemies is interesting; they genuinely seem to react to your actions in unpredictable ways, and it is quite a thrill when you take them down, even if for me at times it was like playing Braid. However, I keep imagining how this game must have felt to play back in the day if you were invested in beating it and not just a wee guy with a cup full of twenty pence pieces playing machines at random in Blackpool. Getting all the way to even the first Satan, dying and having to do that entire level again. It’s honestly abuse. Creator Tokuro Fujiwara should have been arrested. Maybe he still can be? I’m in favour.
Will I ever play it again? I have the NES version coming up in 1986. Now the question with that one is if I can be arse to do both loops… or even one loop.
Final Thought: Fascinating to consider that I imagine the game being this hard as being just as unpleasant to gamers of the era as it is to me, but Ghost ‘n Goblins’ long life of sequels and status as one of the top sellers of the era (“among the top ten highest-grossing arcade games of 1986 in Japan and the US, the year's sixth best-selling computer game in the UK, and NES version sold over 1.6 million cartridges” sez Wikipedia) so it’s obvious that gamers of the time were all masochistic perverts, essentially Capcom’s pay-pigs. Well, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Games Played in 2023
New year, new post where I humiliate myself by posting everything I played this year! And actually? I'm pretty proud of myself this year! If you look at 2022, I bought a LOT of games! A crazy amount! But this time, I actually didn't spend nearly as much this year. My purchase list is pretty short, and I actually barely bought anything during Steam Sales! I actually did not buy ANYTHING during the autumn and winter sales and I'm genuinely proud of myself!
And I managed to play a BUNCH of stuff! I really tore through a lot of games and had a lot of fun even with the ones I had to play on super easy difficulties cause I suck at games lmao. If you're curious what I spent time playing, you can take a look under the read more!
Key
Present - Game was given to me by someone else
Gift - I gave the game to someone else, but I can still play that copy
Free - I got the game for free
And as always I only put games on here that I played for the first time or had the intention of beating for the first time or reached a big milestone in for the first time. I won’t include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for example, I played it a lot this year. But I played it a lot last year too.
I also removed stuff like itchio bundles and subscription services because it bloats the list and... I'm a little embarrassed haha.

===========
And there you have it! Everything I bought, beat, and tried through the year! As always, I'm certain there's stuff missing that I didn't intentionally axe. I keep track of this stuff kinda closely cause I'll completely forget otherwise but even I make mistakes or play stuff that's forgettable lol.
As for next year? There's a few things I'd like to play in 2024, a couple of series I want to continue and a couple of new things to try, as well as a lot of games I wanted to play THIS YEAR but didn't get around to it! My only real gaming resolution is to play less Fortnite. I'm serious!
Looking back at my goals for 2023 I actually did get through a lot of them. Megaman, God of War, and Enchanted Arms were all games I mentioned wanting to play. And I said I wanted to play more meaty RPGs and wouldn't you know it, my top 5 old games I played this year were ALL RPGs! So I think I did a good job!
I also did a lot of emulating this year and had a GREAT time with it! I experimented with a ton of consoles and it's interesting to see how certain things work for more complicated stuff like PS3/360. It really did open up what I can play and I can't believe I just stopped doing this for a while! Glad to be back! NOW I CAN MAKE GIFS!!
That should be that for 2023! Here's to a fantastic year full of fun and video games for everyone! Let's head into 2024 blazing!
