Realized I had enough to say about this to make it it's own post.

I realized my least favorite part of the musical is the section from the beginning of act 2 until Ruth's big performance. I went to rewatch npmd and when I got to act 2 I just put my rewatch on hold for a couple days 'cause I was putting off watching that part. It's such a slog to get through for me and I think that's cause the plot just gets put on hold until Max gets back?

I agree about hatchet town not landing. I like it in isolation but with the context of the rest of the show it's very weird. And I think that's cause nothin' fuckin happens!! You'd think all the stuff about paranoia building and Soloman Lauter turning the townsfolk against eachother would go somewhere but no??? It just never comes up again and has nothing to do with the Max plotline. And then it just cuts to the school doing a theater production?? It's very jarring and just feels out of place.

Just for once has grown on me 'cause I really like Ruth and the insight that song provides for her character, but it feels out of place. After all the intensity of hatchet town and the implication that things are getting out of hand it feels so weird to just cut to the students of hatchetfeild high doing normal school activities. Sure they mention the school is under lockdown but we don't really see how that effects the lives of the students.

I guess you could say the segment before Richie's death is pretty slow too, but that had a point in showing how the school had changed after Max left and was before anything supernatural had really happened, so taking a moment to show the nerds going about their lives normally and showing Richie's life before he died to make his death hurt more made sense. The mundanity of it was kinda the point. Ruth's segment just felt weirder to me.

After Ruth's performance ends though...yeah I disagree act 2 rules. Max is such a fan antagonist and it's really great to watch things crescendo as Max gets more bold and picks people off.

I really like Lautski and if I loved you is a BANGER. Maybe one of my favorites in the show. And well...anyone who's familiar with my blog will probably know I REALLY disagree with Grace not being a compelling character. Watching her unravel as she loses control is REALLY compelling to me, and THE SUMMONING???

Oh my god act 2 is a blast after the first section. The song I have beef with is actually best of you it's SOOOO boring and disney channel-esqe in a painfully generic way. I get nothing out of it. It's a good thing dirty dudes must die exists 'cause it would have been a lame really final song. conveys NOTHING of what the musical is actually about or what makes it unique.

Man I have a lot of thoughts on this musical.

kind of a hot take, but I vastly prefer the first act of npmd (up to the song npmd) to the second act so much so that I like never watch the second act..

I actually don’t know why this is, but it might be that lautski doesn’t hit for me like it does for some people (don’t get me wrong I still like it a lot), Grace isn’t a compelling enough a character for me, Richie and Max are my favorite character and one doesn’t appear in act 2 at all while the other maybe gets a collective 8 minutes or screen time, or that the songs in act 1 are all bangers while act 2 has some that just don’t land for me (looking at you if I loved you and hatchet town)

if I need a brain break from college, I might post a song ranking of the hatchetfield trilogy cause that’s where the really hot takes would come out

also also this isn’t meant to like start fights or anything, but I would love to know people’s thoughts

I know there's a lot of people who like the time shenanigans in regards to time+wars+wind thanks to hyrule warriors
