I cant stop thinking about trolls, specifically Floyd. Finally decided to just go wild and draw fanart. Im going insane over this little guy
HE IS THE SIZE OF MY FINGER
Pretty short theory/rant under cut
I also really love the idea that he’s been hanging out with the rock trolls since the brothers separated. It could even kinda make sense. His looks kinda remind me of something you could see a rock troll looking like, just mess up his hair a bit. Ofc he has wayy too bright colors to be a rock troll, but he was born as a pop troll. (I can just imagine how much he would stand out oml.) Not to mention, Prince D said in the second movie that trolls can enjoy more than just one type of music. He was also apparently kidnapped 2 months prior to the movie, and the second movie was just a week before the third, meaning Floyd had been missing for 1 month and 3 weeks by the time of the second movie. Someone would probably try to look for him, but after a while of no signs they could’ve just assumed him dead and given up. By the time of the movie the rock trolls wouldn’t even think to ask anyone of the other tribes about him, because he’d been missing for a while and because the whole rock-apocalypse was going on. Only reason i can see it not working is if the rock trolls were against any type of music the entire time and either would’ve just kicked him out or forced him to only play rock (which i don’t believe Floyd would be able to do). Really going into theory mode here: Floyd showing up could be what made Queen Barb find out about the other tribes and first get the idea of the world tour, but only starting to plan it after Floyd disappears and they fail to find him.
I would also love if this was true and every time Floyd plays rock music he gets aggressive and scares the sht out of his brothers lol.
I literally came up with the oc as i drew this, i just wanted some random guy for the pose and suddenly i had a character. He’s just someone that basically clung himself to Floyd immediately when he got to the village. Bro’s kind of a bully but he’s also a loser. (Just wanna say I’m not the type of person that ships ocs with canon, and i’m not doing it here) They end up having a sort of rivalry, as Floyd gets better at Rock and manages to mix it with his pop, he gets a bit popular. Meanwhile Brick has never really tried to gain an audience, but when Floyd gets followers and Brick was already challenging him, he ultimately gets some attention too. They sort of team up and become a duo, but they ensure that they’re still rivals. Inevitable though, they become friends, hang out a lot, sing and dance, like normal trolls. Brick teaches Floyd some specific things about rock and Floyd tells him about his tribe and brothers. Brick would be the devastated when Floyd got kidnapped and would be the last to stop searching. (Never stopped hoping he was alive though). Of course though, he is a rock troll and theres no way he would show how much he cares about Floyd.
Im currently working on colored designs of Brick and Rock!Floyd

i only read tumblr once a day because i [try] to stay sane so only just caught up with the art discourse, which I do have some bits n shit I want to add: a bit fasile for one but, dont you as an artist have upkeep and resource needs to produce? even if its just like...computer, tablet and necessities to continue existence because art takes time to make, those are real, and cost money. "art" in an absolute sense can be made for free with minimal time through just thinking, but like, a webcomic that is a physical thing made of electronic patterns and hosted on a server, takes time and takes stuff. "Webcomics" isnt a free infinitely repeating resource, and you are more than a machine to create webcomic, and none of us are infinite as a resource! at worst, art hits public domain eventually. that said even from that place of survival in capitalistic society it DOES make sense to at least have free public facing art as PROMOTION even if its just idk downtime sketches, doodles, memes, fanart etc so like im not 100% disagreeing yknow, and I am not and artists cant be a paying consumer my/their own art, art has to exist for the self too, the self that isnt a "paying class", or i just start making marvel movies and then its time to find my cool wet hole in the dirt and express my creative individuality like im a mathmatician of statistical analysis of fluid dynamics.
now that im awake i was going to answer these point by point, but this kind of flies past my point that making art exclusively for those who pay is abysmal and treating your audience like they're thieves is a poisonous and off-putting response to one's perceived "loss of income" (which is not even theft because the item being "stolen" can be reproduced infinitely. im talking about like a digital image like a comic page and not a physical item where there's limited copies lol). people either want to pay you or they dont; you can't force people to pay you by making access to your work harder, worse, more inconvenient, and more degrading to your audience. you can't induce artificial scarcity and be a good person.
like yeah obviously art production takes money. that's why most artists work desk jobs instead of trying to make it a solo venture and just expecting the world around them to pick up their slack. i didn't come out of a lotus blossom with a tablet ready to go, i worked desk jobs from age 15-24 in order to have enough savings to cushion myself if need be and pay for base supplies. i use tablets and items gifted/sold to me at a steep discount by my friends. i lived really poor in order to have the life i wanted. and i really loved it lol. i still think of that time so fondly.
once the comic is produced and posted, it is free for my audience to look at and the reproduction costs of the finished image is 0 dollars. it can be copied and reposted freely without charge. it costs me basically nothing to host. the production costs are currently covered by patreon donations. if they were no longer covered by patreon donations i would get a desk job instead of making my choice to go into the financially unsuccessful field of the arts my audience's personal problem to solve. if i don't make things people want to buy, that's my problem and not my audience's.
yeah, it would suck to have to stop doing this because its no longer financially viable (it is really financially hard right now; the state of the world around us is not conductive to the patreon life), but i wasn't entitled to it anyway. i get to make art for a living bc i have an audience that permits me to. why would i start treating them like dogshit or lying about value of my work to squeeze extra money out of them after what they gifted me?

hi okay i was meant to sleep like an hour ago this is going to be so fucking incoherent you have been warned
first off the timeline divide in the epilogues into meat and candy is so fucking interesting to me because its like. its so clearly a reference to the meat/candy binary of storycrafting that hussie talks about in the [s] descend author commentary iirc - meat as action heavy content that drives the plot forward, and candy as lighter less heavy content (usually focused on shipping which matches with the candy timeline being represented with the sucker juju or whatever the fuck its called). caliborn is meat calliope is candy this is simple this is basic.
*BUT* - if you look at calliope and caliborns roles in the narrative of homestuck itself theres some really interesting shit there right - caliborn is the meat. he drives the plot forward he wants nothing but action he literally tries to steal the narrative and recreate it in his own image. calliope is the candy the focus on shipping. in universe shes explicitly written to be a fandom stand in, especially obvious in how she draws fanart of the kids right. caliborn = meat = canon (also side note i cant fit anywhere else - the meat timeline is the one where john kills lord english, which has to happen to preserve the timeline, arguably making it the 'canon' timeline). calliope = candy = fandom. obviously the two timelines are representative of those two binaries, and alt calliope controls the candy timeline (which has a much heavier focus on shipping/fan kids/relationship drama/generally the type of shit you see in fanon content) but theres no caliborn right? hes dead.
enter dirk. unfortunately one of the most interesting fucking characters in this entire shit heap i hate it here. hes clearly the caliborn stand in for post canon - he controls the meat timeline, he and alt calliope keep trying to kill each other, he hijacks control of the narrative homosuck style and arguably pushes his friends and family to act out of character to 'fix' the narrative (second side tangent here but to me thats why everyones so. gestures vaguely at post canon. not themselves yk. theyre either in the fanon timeline or the 'canon' timeline thats being hijacked and controlled just like homosuck i swear theres a reason theyre like that guys- (<voice of a guy desperate for post canon to have anymeaning)). not to mention all the connections dirk already has to caliborn theyre basically splinters in law at this point
so everything lines up pretty well so far right. candy is the fanon timeline, the focus on shipping and interpersonal drama as established in the meat/candy storycraft binary, controlled by the character written as a stand in for fans. meat is the canon timeline, the focus on action and conflict, controlled by (a stand in for) caliborn. its all normal and great and fantastic if you just ignore the burning trash heap that is the actual content of post canon.
and then the dirkjohn propaganda kicks in /hj
but fr though this doesnt even have to be in a shipping way its just. jesus fucking christ these two have so many parallels its insane.
winding it back to og homestuck for a moment - john arguably *is* homestuck right. hes the audience surrogate, the first character we meet and the last we see, the guy that gets retcon powers and literally rewrites the entire narrative around him - literally leaving his mark permanently on the rest of the comic (the arms and oil retcons on the early pages). john as homestuck is i think a fairly common reading and also makes the rest of my argument work so lets just accept it and move on okay <3 okay. also, the way he becomes the narrative is incredibly heir of breath coded - he literally inherits/becomes the narrative, and the narrative changes around him to protect him (all ways heir interacts with aspect), and he does all of this almost without realising it. he never wants the narrative, and he barely uses it once he has it - honestly, hes pretty detatched from it, just kinda... breezing through yk. breath coded behaviour
so. johns homestuck - or homestuck proper at least. and what does john do in the epilogues?
...he either dies or becomes a depressed repressed mess going through a midlife crisis that basically just drifts through life doing fuck all. yyeah. homestuck aint doing too great in post canon (Which. checks out). him dying in meat specifically though is really fucking interesting to me, *because*-
i think. ult dirk is post canon. or at least, he is to post canon what john was to homestuck. he literally kills john (homestuck) and takes his place as the bearer of the narrative - and hes entirely fucking aware of what hes doing (yet another fun parallel between them - john never has to face himself (not even an alternate self - one of very few characters in the comic to not have one), and if you consider him the narrative then he never has to face the narrative. dirk *constantly* has to face himself, which means if he is post canon, hes constantly aware of it. theres also potentially smth here with heirs being a passive class while princes are active but i could be wrong ive never cared about +/- alignments LMAO). dirk's also the narrative in an incredibly prince coded way - he destroys the narrative, and he destroys *through* the narrative. he kills the very thing he wants to become more than anything because thats the only way he *can* become it.
so. dirks post canon. he and calliope had split control over the epilogues, but now hes almost completely taken over control of post canon (and im tempted to say thats commentary on how much influence the fans had on the epilogues, following the calliope = fandom reading, but im not gonna put much weight into that because i have no fucking clue how things went down behind the scenes). calliope can definitely still be read as the fandom in post canon though, which makes her hatred of ult dirk and everything hes doing even better because like. yeah! look at the fan reception to everything in post canon! we do want it dead the way she wants ult dirk dead! (also really fun in how it matches up with cherubs fighting for domination - dirk being the caliborn stand in and alt calliope being the calliope that *did* fight her brother and win). also ult dirk (canon) hating alt calliope (the fandom) lines up really fucking well with how bitter and cynical post canon was towards the homestuck fanbase but again thats probably not intentional
so. ult dirk is canon and fighting to 'fix' the narrative/continue its relevancy (could be seen as a metaphor for how capitalism insists creative properties continue on into infinity with pointless sequels < absolutely a fucking reach). alt calliope is the fandom and would Really like him to fucking stop please. john is homestuck and is just fucking dead
(side note pt 3 electric boogaloo but i dont think its a coincidence that the only surviving jegbert (the only one that can crack her egg barring any weird corpse revival bullshit) is in the candy/fanon timeline. it also might not be a coincidence that the only strider to not be ascended and/or turned into a robot is roxy (also transed gener in the meat timeline). ult dirk gets his ass kicked by the power of transsexuality real)
anyway tldr because its 2 am but post canon is just an extended metaphor for sequels killing their sources, mocking their corpses and then trying and failing to fill their roles while the fandom tries to murder them and everything after the paradox space comics was a mistake thank you and good night
ok firstly: who are you and what are you doing on my blog. secondly: thank you for this it's everything i was hoping for when i asked for you to hyperfixate on BC in my inbox.
i fully agree with this reading + appreciate the nuance that BC brings to the table. I think Hussie coined and embodied the term "suicide of the author" by explicitly turning canon over to the readers and allowing the concept of canon to become dubious. it was an extremely risky move that paid off in some ways and flopped in others. much like most other risks hussie took with hs. i find BC so compelling because it is simultaneously flogging a dead horse and creating interesting arcs and futures for beloved characters. Like thats the thing i cant say i love BC and I can't say i hate it, compelling has been the most descriptive word i can come up with for it lmao.
I want to extend and highlight the calliope/caliborn(dirk) metaphor in regards to the ultimate fate of canon. we know that cherubim have the double sided childhood where one is active while the other sleeps, and we've explicitly seen that calliope represents candy and caliborn represents meat. also i could be delusional but i feel as though there's been foreshadowing for a while that the timelines will at some point converge. there are many unanswered questions about the state of the new universe and the cracks in the sky, and i feel this is representative of the cherubim reaching maturity. at some point i think the meat universe and the candy universe may crash into each other so to speak, and perhaps one may destroy the other. again this parallels dirk and calliope's fight across both timelines.
i also heard a theory some time ago that in the meat timeline, dirk and rose on their quest to create a new session of SBURB to continue the reproductive process of the universe (lowkey a noble pursuit sans the evil controlling shit) , will create the 48 player squiddle session thus completing the giant time loop theyve been slaving under this whole time. and as we hear enough about from dave, serving time loops can be an exhausting feat of self fulfilling prophecies stacked on top of each other. It seems that the characters were under the impression that the great time loops were complete (or at least escaped from) when they created Earth C but I believe they were mistaken. What happens when the loop is truly complete? does True Free Will finally begin to take effect? Do our protagonists travel to the new universe too or are they destroyed with the old one? does the story end or does it loop back around forever and ever?
I think that the decision John made at the beginning of the epilogues had that ultimate outcome. Both decisions led to the characters escaping the time loop, but for the meat timeline it means they have to complete the time loop and for the candy timeline it means they have to escape the time loop. Is the candy timeline a doomed timeline? perhaps. but we know from Davesprite that it is possible to escape doomed timelines and enter the alpha timeline, you just have to change yourself somewhat so from a narrative perspective you're a different character from your alpha counterpart.
much to think about.

my fucked up way of making s2 ep7 work without changing the way fizz acts:
make it so that mammon made fizzarolis robo limbs, instead of ozzie.
fizzarolis prothestics made by mammon could work like an apple phone: they work slower over time and after a year, they need to be replaced. and every year, after the competition, fizzes prize for winning mammons clown pageant is a new pair of robo limbs. his payment is basically a necessity thats treated like a privilege by mammon. its obvious to anyone who finds out (like blitz and ozzie) that whats going on is REALLY fucked up.
itd justify all fizzes anxiety in the episode. you could even keep the line of fizz saying to oz "mammon gave me this life. he gave me security, wealth, and i wouldn't be here without him", and itd be all the more bittersweet.. because to an extent, itd be true. fizz probably thought his career, his LIFE was over when he lost his limbs, and mammon couldve been a light in his darkest moment, being kind for a brief moment, just to manipulate him for the rest of his career to make up for that one act of kindness.
in this rewritten version, fizz won't let oz make him new prothestics. he tells oz that his prothestics were given to him by someone "special and important to him", but never says who. since oz said "not my story to tell," i think oz would 100% respect this boundary.
.. until he finds out WHO has been gifting fizz these limbs. maybe he finds a trash can full of unusable, unsafe mammon made limbs under the pile of fizz merch in his dressing room. maybe oz is angry at fizz for lying to him for nearly a decade, until fizz explains thru tears that he cant lose the ability to move like he used to before the accident, and he HAS to do this. because yeah! of course hed feel that way! oz offers to make him a new set of limbs again, without wanting anything from fizz.
the episode could stay almost exactly the same with these changes. the only thing id changed after crooked is to have ozzie ACTUALLY hit mammon, at least once. id make it play out like that one scene from south park, where kyle slaps cartman ONCE, and cartman starts wailing for his mom. replace kyle with ozzie, and cartman with mammon, and itd play out perfectly. i just really like fanart where mammon cries tbh
you could even keep blitz (who isnt 100% necessary to the plot despite his connection to fizz), and the twins, creepzo, oliver, and theyd feel a lot less useless with higher stakes relating to fizzes disability/abilities to perform.
this episode always felt really weak to me on a first viewing and rewriting it made me figure out why. the stakes are REALLY low, compared to how the episode (and fizz) insists that theres so much on the line to lose. fizz was always going to be ok if he quit working for mammon since he has ozzie, and that fact is painfully obvious to the audience and blitz. it crushes all the believability of fizz acting like he does in the actual episode.
anyway thank you for listening to me ramble about my blorbos :3
Oh, my heart.
Those are some thick, juicy stakes, Anon, the kind Fizz's conflict with Mammon so desperately needed. Thank you for sharing this!

IM LOSING IT OVER YOUR RECENT IKE FIC. LIKE OH MY GOD. its so sweet and heartwrenching i felt just as nervous and anxious as reader the entire time, and when ike reciprocated my heart MELTED AHHH his freckles!!! how kind and beautiful he is, and his confusion turning into acceptance and his SQUEALSSS AAAA. i cant take it this is my fav ike and probably luxiem fic of all time. all of your hard work paid off so well, it was so well structured and emotional and everyone felt so real!! like they arent characters, theyre actual people!!
ahh, now i wish i knew ike's perspective during those stream moments and his reaction to pen and paper ship content HAHA. i imagine he swiftly bookmarks it on his private account but he keeps blushing and his hands shake whenever he sees any fanart WAAAH. maybe one time he sees pen and paper kissing and he cant properly look at the notifications from reader's chat without FLUSHING RED i love them so bad
i love whenever i'm reading a fanfic and it's so sweetly emotional that you feel your own emotions kicking in. so whenever i hear my work has that effect on someone else it's one of the nicest feelings in the world and WHAT DO YOU MEAN FAVORITE IKE AND/OR LUXIEM FIC EVER. that's super high praise thank youuuuu sobsobsob
i mean this is the kindest most /posi way possible but "they aren't charcters, they're actual people" is the scariest compliment i've ever heard. like on one hand i'm genuinely happy! i worked really hard on keeping multifaceted personalities in mind even for the minor characters! but also Oh No. I'm Writing Vtubers. We Need To Play This So Carefully And So Conscious Of The Creator/Audience Boundary Or My Ass Is GONE
real talk one of my most favorite ike things is when he squeals at something cute or because he's embarrassed ahhhh. and his speaking voice gets so high pitched and soft when he's flustered too like?? it's probably my favorite charm point of his
the ogs remember the poll i ran like a month ago about if ike should have freckles or not. shoutout to the landslide victory, if i remember correctly 97% of voters wanted ike with freckles! so glad that worked out, it works so well with the star theme and the difference between an online friendship meeting irl, and how reader loves them because it's a reminder that they have so much to learn about ike and are ready/willing, and also, freckles are just plain adorable. ike is just plain adorable. put them together and if i were richer and thirstier i'd be commissioning an artist
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
real talk tho i feel like ike goes from 1 to 100 whenever he catches himself simping over reader before the off-collab. either he's really good at acting composed, being normal, just interacting with his best friend like best friends do... or he's a stuttering, blushy mess that wavers like jell-o.
ike's the type of guy to sleepily check twitter before going to bed and whenever he sees pen and paper on his fyp it's like he snaps awake. maybe even squeaks or goes "a!" if it's especially.... you know. sometimes he can't even comprehend that people want him and reader to. well. his mouth goes dry.
and then he feels so dirty and embarrassed just because it's there, but... he's still looking at it. is it bad he's still looking at it? it definitely is but it's captivating, in a way. somehow. the artists are so talented, and somehow they nail your body language to a t, and the way your hair swoops above your eyes, and draw you with the cutest little expressions, and—
ah, who is he kidding.
in moments of weakness it triggers something in him to bury his face a little deeper in his blankets, pretend the screen's light would cool the heat pooling over his cheeks, and search the hashtag himself.
not even three pieces of fanart later, he has to throw his phone face-down on the mattress, cover his blush with a pillow, and now he's definitely squealing. it's healing and it makes him ill. it's... pretty. you're pretty. and he's pretty dumb for letting a silly crush distort itself like this.
the worst part is that some of these line up a little too well with daydreams he wanted to lock away until the end of time. he likes when he takes the lead. the stunned, puppyish expression so rare it only shows up on your face during the biggest plot twists during a stream, but coated in a darkened blush as he pecks them on the cheek, elegant and composed. calm.
ohhhh, this can't be good for his heart. especially when ike himself is so red-faced just thinking of it. calm, his foot.
still with the pillow over his flush, ike feels around for his phone and sets it on his nightstand. he chides himself. that's enough internet for the day, eveland! now quit acting like a shoujo high schooler in love and go to bed already, it's not going to happen!
he sets his face into a determined frown as he lifts the pillow and sets it aside. with any luck, he'd go the rest of the night without thinking of reader and his feelings for them.
the frown eases as he nestles into his blankets and tucks himself in. soft sheets and warm comfort greet him as he shuts his eyes, and he enters the fluffy haze of sleep as he slips into dreamland...
...is what he'd like to say, but not even ten seconds later his eyes snap open and jerks upright in bed. wait, i'm acting like i'm in love?!
he sits with the thought seeping through his brain like a corrosive acid, filing through every little moment he daydreamed about you, and when those don't paint him a picture he likes, he tries to recall the moments he shared with you instead. those are even fonder, and even worse.
he slaps his hands over his face and sighs, and when it sounds lovesick he sighs even more.

Hi, not sure if you remember me, but i sent an ask a while ago saying how i love the Incadescence of a dying light and that i talk about it with my friend and how we both really liked the story and are juts you know discussing it well update to now. we still do that lol. i cant stop thinking about it, i listen to the firewatch OST on the daily, resonating with each track at a time. I love it. I live it. I am enamored. Everytime Im studying Polish (my native language) and revising each epoch for my upcoming finals i cant help but connect themes and motives to that wonderful story of yours. If i land on a fitting topic in my oral final exam (like pop-culture, creativity and arts, certain themes in modern media) you BET Ill be talking about this fic (with all the credit I can give of course!) cause USARWSETDYRVUHUISC I cant get it out of my head. Its such an amazing example of how the media of fanfiction elevates the story to its maximum potential. How knowing the characters makes it so much easier to connect and resonate, even though Mumbo is absent from the majority of the fic, we still feel hurt after finding out whats happened to him. Like, its such an amazing creative medium I love fanfiction and TERSSXEFJNKVCRXSERARXSXERCDJNGIKKDc  oh gosh The Incadescence of a Dying Light. yeah so fun fact i actually had to look up what it means cause i didnt know the word before and oh. oh. oh its so much worse and more painful. really love it, i do, oh i do! I now have acquired (idk how to spell it lul) the never subsiding lust for nature and outdoors and hiking and being a part of it. I love it, you made me regain my love for it. I loved it before, yes, but i was caught up in my own head and had so much stuff i had to do, but now i love to look out my window even more, i love strolling in my garden. i love it. thank you, thank you, thak youuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So yeah, this fic is one of my faves of all time, i like it a lot, it has inspired me to live more and be alive basically and also. and for the end a fanart of an alternative ending where Mumbo somehow survives and just lives in the forest like a wild animal, living his best life, eating berries (i decided on drawing him eating berries [peace love and plants] instead of chowing down [is chowing a word??] on some rabbit lol) and then grian finds him and its super awkward
HI! Yes, of course I remember you! First of all, had a really wild day yesterday at work, but I read this at soooome point on my phone during the middle of the day and it made me smile :)
This ask is just so??? AAAAAAA???? I almost don't know how to respond, because it's just SO wonderful to hear this about something I created. Like I did that? I made a thing that is sticking deeply with people? I'm just soooo <333333
I like your point about how fanfiction can maximize story potential! I think it'd make a wonderful essay topic honestly. I have thought about this in connection with fanfic a lot--specifically, the divide between original fiction and fanfiction. In original works, you have to make the audience care. You have to introduce me to a character, setting, and story I will be interested in. I've read a lot of negative book reviews that start off with "the author didn't make me care about the characters" (i have also...said this myself about books I ended up not liking.) With fanfic, you skip that step! It lets you jump right in. I don't have to explain Mumbo and Grian's friendship or demonstrate it to you. You just Know. Someone reading it fandom blind would get the implication about how important they are to each other simply by seing the depth of Grian's grief, but for my intended audience, I can do whatever I want because I trust you to already have the background information you need.
The title is from a line I really like in a song (Post Humorous by Gus Dapperton). It just...painted such a nice word picture. Especially for a story about grief death and fire!
I just. Love that this fic helped you regain a desire for nature? That just makes me feel...warm, I guess, to know that I was able to spark that with something I created. I hope it goes well for you, and you get to take many walks. This spring I've been using the trails near my aunt's house (not.....hiking paths. too urban.) much more. I wanted to walk this week but I was too busy lol. I hope you have many wonderful experiences out in the Great Outdoors <3 one of these days, I swear I'll up and move to a place with "better" nature and "real" trails close by.
Also, SKFJSLFJSKFLSJKF your fanart made me laugh so much. I have like. Entertained this idea. Not as an actual or serious part of the story but I was like man wouldn't it just be off-the-wall if he was just vibing Out There 😭😭😭 You've caught the vibe perfectly LOL
this was all around such a special message to hear, thank you SO much!
#fave#save#hc_firewatch_au#quara asks#again <3333333333#i feel like this response doesnt really adequately express how much this ask means to me i'm just really tired sorry <3#i lvoe how many people i've induced firewatch brainrot into slfjsklfj

canon
look when i say canon aint no thing i dont mean there isnt a shared. body of work from which we do interpretation, fanfic, fanart, whatnot.
what i mean is that text doesnt exist free from interpretation. these things didnt actually happen. art only exists insofar it is interpreted by subjects. is a author interview canon? that is a tricky question. authorial intent can inform our interpretation of media. but it doesn’t have to. so things that are extra textual can inform our interpretation and they also can not.
even limiting our selves to the things on the page, was that decision from set design an indication that the machine actually works this way, in a technical sense, or was it a limitation of budget, and is actually grander? or is it only symbolically that way, to evoke mystery, but doesnt mean future writers cant change it?
did an actor make a particular choice bc that is unchanging characteristic of the character? did they have a bad day, or was the scriptwriter that day wonky? and if they are part of the text are they valid?
i guess what im saying is that the audience is part of the general machine of understanding art. it isnt static. what brings you the most in depth understanding of the world, the most enjoyment, the most potential to tell more stories? i dont like the word canon bc it somehow mixes the idea of the text of the story and the interpretation of the story in a weird way so there can only be one.
I can tell you very clearly what the text is and what is extra textual, for sure. but i dont think that is the same as what people imply when they say canon… i feel what they mean when they say it is that only a strict literalist reading of the text is canon, and like… im not a fundamentalist in real life, why would i think that way about fun happy art?
because the implication is that if something is not canon it is just a headcanon… and like, no? that is the paradigm i think is not useful. there are things that are extra textual and subtextual that totally help in media interpretation. and contradictory things can coexist. but also, if they arent helpful then ignore them.
#media analysis#fandom#canon#look im a nobody#with a minor in media studies#but really who cares what i say#i never subscribed to literalist theology i aint doing it for fandom

Man, earlier I saw a post about how games don't respect older art choices and Hades II was an example because the God portraits were different and it's haunting me.
Like...ngl I expect to see people praising Hadea over Hades II cuz that's how people work. They like the og thing so any mis step or change is tarnishing it. Will say having early game available to a wider audience with the popularity Hades established will make things interesting for the team. Cuz yknow, during Hades og development it wasn't like the internet was overflowing in Transistor or Pyre fanart. But Hades got so much attention.
That being said, the person who commented on Hades II ignoring older art details didn't like the newer portraits. Valid to dislike something but the reasoning and talk around it really put me off. Saying it looked like AI? Asking if a newer artist took over and if the old one left???
Im taking a stab in the dark as someone not on their team, but the new direction feels intentional and meant to compliment Melinoë's story. She's not in the underworld for her journey, which could explain lack of harsh black shadows. Everyone is dressed in armor which suggests they're all at war. We don't see Hades, Persephone or Zagreus and trailers suggest Chronos did something to them. That probably has the other Gods pissed and alert as opposed to vibing like in the first game. First game, Zagreus was basically calling random family and they really had little stake in it beyond 'yeah man, you're family! :D cant wait to see ya' whereas now, seeing how one God is actively on the field and implied to have more interaction with our lead, we're actually in their world and able to chat them up directly and they have a common enemy.
Again, anyone can feel free to dislike the changes but I really don't like this assumption that this is a downgrade and the team is forgetting their style or whatever. This isn't a studio that's rushing to meet deadlines like a Pokemon or Sonic game. This very much reads like intentional art direction to match the new tone and story.
...I will though, say that the complaints about Artemis' new portrait is hilarious after how many people complained about her og portrait and kept mistsking her hair for a wig or hood.

for that ask game! 13, 20, 24, 36 :D, 40, 65, 74!
oh god okay lol
13. What’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?
if you find yourself bored with what you're writing, your audience will likely also be bored reading it. write the interesting bits, cut the un-interesting bits, and everything in between should move through from interesting scene to interesting scene as quickly as possible.
20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?
haha. hahaha. for themes, "no one will ever love you and you have to learn to live with that". also avoidant attachment issues.
for settings, japan! but that's i write canon universe BNHA fics.
24. Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?
"you don't have to try so hard." (i do actually)
36. How do you write kissing scenes?
karma strikes again…
i largely,, don't. sex? ok. murder? great! kissing? 😬
sometimes i just say "their lips touched"/"and then they were kissing" and move on very quickly. i do have a real kiss scene i cant skip past coming up tho and as much as i want it to happen it's going to embarrass me to write.
40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?
something from "the rot in your sympathy" lol jk, unless 👀
i feel like this has already been fulfilled by my friend who drew me a himiko/denki scene 🥰 i think more people should draw them <3
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.
the overarching plot in my genshin fic only exists because i thought of a really funny joke that i needed ~50k words to tell. i am so, so excited to write that punchline. (the joke might not even land and it might take me a year or more to tell it, but every time i think about it i giggle.)
74. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?
you wouldn't.
one of my anon fics was written as a prompt fill--on behalf of a friend who had signed up for an exchange and then gotten too busy to fill the prompt themselves. i don't know what the exchange was called, i don't know who submitted the prompt, i just filled it. it's not for a fandom ive ever written for before or ever will write for again. i didn't even POST IT, my friend did, so not even my IP address would do you any good. i am the ghost in the machine.
well actually you'd ask @voiider and voiider would say "yeah that was jihn"
#writing#my writing#answered asks#while it was still a wip i almost submitted “the rot in your sympathy” for a big bang just so i could get fan art of it#and then i decided that might make people too uncomfortable so i did a different project instead#i like seeing hawks having a bad time#i have more asks to answer but i might not get to them right away sorry about that#i only have enough spoons for one ask at a time

Hey! I have a quick convention question. There’s going to be a con near me soon(driving distance, won’t need a hotel) and I can’t afford much more than general admission. Do you think it would be worth it to just go for the panels and maybe sns? I’d hate to miss the opportunity to see the cast in person but if I cant have the “full” experience of getting autos and photo ops is it better to just stay home? Thanks!
hello! i hope you don't mind me answering publicly with a very long answer to your very quick question, but i wanted to give my honest review of going to a spn con as someone who loves spn and spnwin, but did very few ops. as a disclaimer: i am not criticizing folks who get a lot of auto/photo ops (a lot of my friends get them and enjoy them! i love seeing ppl's photo ops and hearing auto op stories!) but it's just not something i'm super interested in for myself.
short answer: my favorite part of the con was getting to meet ppl who i don't get to see much/hadn't met before and the general feeling of being part of a community. (if that sounds like you, definitely go!) doing a photo op with a group of friends and the spnwin actors made for a cute memento and we had fun with it, but i don't think you need (m)any extras to feel like you had a "full" experience unless you really want to spend a few minutes with the actors. but again; i'm not someone who cares much about directly interacting with the actors.
even more in-depth response plus some recommendations for if you go:
the panels were really fun and i highly recommend the ones with kim & bri, ruthie and dj. my understanding is that they're almost always all on friday for 3 day cons. the "ladies of spn" panel is also a good one and was on saturday. karaoke on friday night is free and super fun as an audience member - i highly recommend it! i recommend SNS as well, but also i got to be there for the rare occasion that jensen sang lol. unfortunately i was a bit out of it bc of anxiety meds so i don't think i got the "full" experience on that one, though i still enjoyed myself!
i will say that if you aren't interested in either walker or spnwin and don't have (m)any ops, you're gonna have a lot of down time so definitely take that into consideration. the only panels i was interested in on sunday were mark s and j2 (the gotham screening was a nice bonus bc otherwise it would've been a really sparse sunday for me). bc the first half of the j2 panel was almost entirely finale Qs, it had really weird downer vibes (the crowd/Qs really impact the panel vibes). once they started getting more general questions about spn and their other work it picked up a lot. jared and jensen both talking about their kids was really sweet and was probably my favorite part of their panel.
** unfortunately, both sp8 and rob had to back out due to conflicts/illness which was a bummer and i think i'd have enjoyed the con a bit more if they'd been there. but also jake abel filling in with a solo panel was fun and why i decided last minute to do jake and chill that evening.
all in all, i think the best part of cons is seeing friends who you may not usually (or ever!) get to see normally. and as fractious as the spn fandom is, we all love the same show and it's cool to see how many other ppl love the show. i really don't think auto/photo ops are necessary for a "full" con experience. m&gs might be worth the money if you wanted to get some actual time with the actors but those can be $$$ and stressful to get due to the auction process. photos are a cute memento but they are very rushed due to timing with panels/autos/m&gs. i didn't do an auto op but my understanding is that while it varies person-to-person, usually you only have a minute or two with with j2m; things are more relaxed with the rest of the cast. if i were an artist/had spn fanart i was proud of making, i'd probably do an auto op tho! (i mean, i do have spn fanart i'm proud of. but bc of the media i used, it would feel more like getting it defaced vs acknowledged lol)
side note: i do some event organizing with tight schedules as a part of my job and seriously, hats off to the scheduling folks and organizers at these events; the actors really do love engaging with fans which means almost everyone runs over and somehow the staff manage to keep the wheels not only on, but turning.
for reference, these are the "extras" that i did:
friday night karaoke (free with fri/full weekend admission - highly rec & did i mention it's free?)
SNS (definitely rec!)
jake and chill (fun, but not a "must-do")
group photo op with spnwin cast and friends
group photo op with baby and friends (v affordable and relaxed!)
i mean this in the kindest way; if you really feel like you're going to be missing out not getting any direct interaction with the actors, then i'd say skip it and save up for next time if you can. the worst feeling is paying the top of what you can afford for something that isn't quite what you wanted.
one crit thing i will say tho and i feel kinda bad about it: i thought i was prepared for how personal fans were going to get with the actors during panel q&a and... i was not. afaik CE no longer screens Qs and i don't want them to, but i wish some fans would keep in mind that their catharsis might be someone else's trigger. it's not like it happened a lot or destroyed my experience (i'm planning to go to another con in 2024), but i've never needed to take that much xanax over the course of 72hrs before.
#i know you asked such a short question but it's all very fresh in my mind and i had a lot of folks surprised how few 'extras' i was doing#when it was my first ever spn con... and i still very much enjoyed myself!!#now. if there had been writers. i'd have been picking up any and every opportunity to talk to them#y'all think folks pay obscene prices for jensen and misha m&gs? hold my fucking beer.#callout posts would be written for the amount of money i'd pay to meet robbie glynn or dabb

the thing is that no matter how much you try to give the advice that artists need to create for themselves it just will never ever hit or work until they find and experience it for themself because of the way that most artists live we’re all just growing up online on social media where the only judgement of your talent and worth is via likes and shares and when you don’t get any of that attention it makes you feel like your art has no worth and very suddenly the only reason to ever create art in the first place is to post it online to feel like it means anything in the first place when worth shouldn’t be gauged on art like that. and when you begin to rely on likes and retweets and reblogs to measure the worth of your art it very suddenly sets this idea in people that there is no point in creating original content be it stories or ocs, to the point that i see most creators i follow feel shame in themselves for bringing up their OC content instead of their usual fandom content whenever they feel the desire to. and it just beats this idea into people that you’ll never ever be able to reach the following the fandom content you draw does, even though everything you draw fanart for was made by someone with as many stories as you, and your original content will never ever mean anything to anyone that follows you, but all that fanart does. and maybe im being too nihilistic, because being a fanartist gets creators off their feet and allows them to introduce their growing audience to their original content, but i just hate that it has to happen that way in the first place. i dont really want to feel guilty for drawing what i want to draw, be it that i draw some fanart for something and it gets a bunch of attention and i start to fucking hate myself for it because i get this unrealistic and awful idea that nobody cares if my art looks cool or if im good at what i do its just about when its what other people want. and the idea of ‘creating for yourself’ as a creator becomes a very very far away goal to reach with this mindset that i cant shake. i dont really know what point i want to make here, i suppose this is just something ive always and will always be depressed about, but i guess really im very thankful to everyone that likes what i make and sees it truly with care. not out of a sense of friendship but for admiration of what it is and that maybe its interesting or something like that. and i want to do better on my part to support and bring up these very small and personal creations that we all have that its hard to feel confident about with the way the art world is, i dont want to live in this world where every artist is fighting for relevance and hating eachother when someones original content gets attention and yours doesnt when we all barely have 10 active followers. i love artists, i love writers, i love the worlds and things that people create and i want it to be shared more. i dont want to live in a world where people feel guilty for making what they want to. i guess i just wish it was easier, or that i didnt feel guilty for hating what i make in the first place like im not allowed to, i want to be kinder to myself, and love what i do more. i want everyone to be kinder

not to keep sinking into a monster high shaped hole or to bring that wednesday series topic again but yknow since i had to see dull memes about the avatar sequel stuff guess this is my revenge
anyway. millar and gough who are the actual showrunners of the netflix wednesday show, not tim burton, and who wrote and produced the series, also produced and wrote the monster high movie so many people were pissed off by at first and slowly, i think? they came around to. and i find this interesting bc these are two franchises/properties which i see a lot of similarities between but that in the end i feel like should be treated as different things bc of their respective tone and general audience.
monster high in general is meant for younger kids especially now that it has softened its image to relatable instead of aspirational, which to me is fascinating from a marketing toy line perspective. the addams family was alwys meant as skewing older. i really assumed that the series would be about riverdale/teen wolf/supernatural level horror/suspense/adult content, and having a meaner edge and really much darker humor. in the end bc of the need to have stakes in the netflix series a lot of the humor was softened in a way that it doesnt really appeal to me/becomes a character quirk of wednesday instead of something that its normal inside this universe, the sort of casual cruelty and cartoon logic of the 90s comedy movies cant apply when you also have to be worried about characters dying tragic deaths and there are harry potter-esque mysteries and drama going on. that change in tone to me was what really killed it, it took away what made the addams interesting and left it at a level in which it was purely aesthetic surface. im not saying its completely unenjoyable, after all it has millions of fans who seem to vibe with it. im just saying that it doesnt really carry the spirit or the tone of the 90s movies, or even the 60s tv series, which was more focused on comedy overall and was much better at it.
with monster high the movie though, i think the gothic magical high school mystery works much better since it already has a few animated movies that have that sort of tone. the franchise itself works with issues of adolescence and therefore identity, self-acceptance and friendship (issues that the wednesday series wants to give to the protagonist, to varying degrees of success). and i find it really interesting that ive seen so many posts that say something like "oh the outfits are so bad, the fashions all wrong, why didnt they get actual cosplayers", etc. i dont expect everyone to know this but tv movie budgets, especially channels like nickelodeon or disney channel or the like, are pretty small even compared to streaming movie budgets. they usually recycle sets and costumes from other series by the same production company/costume company in the area, and between preproduction and shooting there is barely any time or budget for customized pieces. this isnt an excuse as much as reasoning. and apart from that there is also the nature of the new generation which is more focused on relatability and being appealing to a wider demographic than the first generation, which was more aimed at shocking and calling attention to itself. in that sense im kinda happy with what they went with, the clothes looks kinda cheap but it also looks like what kids in the 14-15 year range would believably wear to look cool and that remains accessible while also being fashionably easy to identify and distinguish themselves and their tastes. the actors are all Very Much covered in makeup and wigs but there is a difference in the styling of the generation 1 dolls/fanart/restylings that make them look much much older, and that would probably spark more controversy that mattel might not be super keen on rn. so unless they literally went the riverdale route of hiring actors in their mid to late twenties to portray fourteen year olds, dress them in miniskirts and risk losing that 8 to 11 year old audience to upset parents, what we ended up with is next to the best we could have hoped for.
apart from that, what im most curious about is how they will touch upon the issue of the two worlds in conflict, monsters and humans. the wednesday series didnt quite work it out in a way im satisfied with, partly bc of burtons and burton properties' own difficulty applying crítical thought to the very concept of "outcast" and marginalization, and partly bc of a tendency of wanting to apply allegories and analogies to these matters. you want to create meaningful comparisons to real feelings of alienation to emotionally appeal to the audience. but also you as a writer have no real experience reading about real actual marginalized identities and just have a general idea that things were bad and people are angry and people protest about it and also that the Teens™ are complaining in social media using new terms you can stick in the mouths of your characters. in that sense monster high's aim at the younger audience saves them from embarrassing themselves too much, which i cant say the same for wednesday (or the winx netflix series, and a bunch of other teen-aimed media, for that matter). so what remains for the monster high franchise is to figure out how to properly handle something like the idea of the two worlds of humans and monsters needing to find some common ground (something i think its really cool in the way it could be sparked by clawdeens new status as a werewolf being half human half wolf), though its the sort of thing that the writers of future iterations should be careful about and really just not be afraid to shake things up a bit and defy their own narrative status quo. like not be scared to have characters like claire the goth girl from that one animated movie, or the jekyll/hyde kid that was also technically half "normie", to explore further aspects to the idea of identity and marginalization that have a much more appropriate home in something like monster high.
#. 🦴#full disclosure i havent finished the wednesday series i dont have the energy in me to invest that much attention in boring subplots#i saw a recap and know what happens and im sad that bianca doesnt appear so much later on#netflix wednesday#monster high the movie

it's been a while since i checked this thread out. i was offgrid for a few days because of uni but im back with more Opinions
see now some of yall are still not getting the point of what im trying to say. "fanfiction is written for fun" is true but you just cant use that to absolve yourselves of the responsibility to pay respect to the very real identities you are trying to write. would you still say that if people are misrepresenting your cultural identity or someone else's cultural identity?
the entire point of my post is how people choose to write mlm relationships consciously or subconsciously based on heteronormative gender roles, and that they should reexamine that. is it fun to misrepresent queer relationships? is it fun to consciously keep doing it?
I do have a theory why Draco over Harry is the one we see this a lot with, but it's not because of writers using heterosexual relationships as a template.
like it or not, a lot of us grew up with heterosexual relationships as the primary influences on how we view relationships as a whole. there will be times that it will influence what we're writing because what we know is part of what we can write. maybe this is not the case for you or some others you know specifically, but this can be the case of others. especially others who are not well informed of the nuances that are in queer relationships that you cant find in cishet relationships.
Fanfiction isn't published work. It's not a transaction between creator and audience where the audience can be let down. Fic/fanart is shared with fellow fans.
yes it is shared with fellow fans, but it's fellow fans who might identify with the identities you are misrepresenting. youre certainly not obligated to do anything but it is just human courtesy to be aware of who is impacted by your works that you willingly share to the public.
Criticism, especially criticism that a writer is enforcing negative stereotypes or enforcing heteronormative gender roles, about a fic they wrote for fun does feel like we're assuming the worst intentions of the writer.
Attributing negative social consequences to their works, or assuming they are writing from a place of ignorance feels wrong.
literally nobody is saying anyone is the bad guy with the worst intentions here. what we're trying to examine is if yall still have things you have to unlearn. you wont grow as a writer, whether professional writer or fanfic writer, if you still hide behind "fanfiction is made for fun" blanket for everything.
fanfiction is made for fun. write what you want, write what you love, write what makes you happy.
but that doesnt absolve you from the responsibility to be respectful of the identities you are representing in your work.
additionally, it is not "fun" to not even try to represent identities respectfully. especially if youre writing about identities you yourself dont even identify as.
fanfic is not magically exempt from consequences. fanfic writers are not magically exempt from accidentally writing from a place of ignorance.
just because youre a fanfiction writer doesnt mean you are exempt from chances to learn and grow.
if you dont want to do that then let's be on our merry, separate ways. i will continue to advocate for what i believe in, you can continue to advocate for what you believe in. the internet is a vast space, after all.
alright kiddos buckle up, cloud has Opinions today
let's talk about the alpha douchification of harry and baby girlification of draco, as blackcathjp so wonderfully said
i will tell you that this isnt my first rodeo when it comes to mlm ships being shoved into heteronormative gender roles. ive been in the yaoi fandom, ive been in the BL fandom, ive been a weeb since i was aged single digits. im perfectly aware of how deep in mlm ship spaces this issue is. but today's subject of interest is drarry, and why i dont like a certain popular characterisation of drarry.
first of all let's pose the question : why is harry the manly alpha head honcho douchebag dumbass jock ? why is draco the naughty bratty overdramatic babygirl princess ? why do yall feel the need to push harry and draco into these stereotypical gender roles, especially in smut ? whats up with that ?
yes harry is a quidditch guy but that doesnt automatically make him a dumbass jock ? the guy's not stupid. i wont elaborate because i and several others have discussed harry's intelligence in other posts already (will link if asked), but yeah harry's not a "dumbass" or a "himbo", at least not in the way you people love to characterise him as. hes not even trying to be a dominating presence. hell, the guy wants to skeddaddle out of situations 8 times out of 10. hes a rough kind of dude, sure, but thats more for his own protection and not out of a need to dominate or control other people. it's weird and stupid to reduce harry's character just to make him fit yalls' homophobic and heteronormative view of mlm dynamics.
SPEAKING OF THAT, what is up with people overplaying draco's overdramatic tendencies and tying it to being a sub and/or a bottom or being the 'feminine' one in the relationship ? i love my bratty subs as much as the next person (my no.1 blorbo rn is a bratty sub who BITES), but if draco's only a bratty sub because hes an overdramatic princess diva who is so, so helpless without the presence of testosterone in your eyes, you need to reevaluate. yes hes a bit helpless in canon but again he was a kid with no pratical combat experience caught up in a war. + his parents' safety being dangled in front of him who wouldnt be helpess in that scenario ?
people absolutely love to explore draco's gender beyond being masculine and theoretically i love that because i love seeing people interpret characters all over the gender spectrum but there's just something about the popular draco gender exploration that just ,,, irks me, for the lack of a better word. people make him smaller ??? than he actually is ?? more helpless ??? like the height and size difference between drarry in canon isnt that noticeable but by god do people stretch it out to infinity and beyond. to make the fem-coded half of the ship smaller and more helpless and more dramatic is, frankly, toeing the lines of misogynistic if it isnt there already.
and why is it that it's always harry who is hypermasculine and draco who is hyperfeminine ? why not have both be feminine ? both be masculine ? both be all over the gender spectrum ? whyyyyyyy do they have to be male x female coded ??? hello ?????? if i wanted a heterosexual ship, i wouldnt be here
like come on guys, theres a bunch of different ways to write mlm ships and a bunch of resources out there to help you get going. why are we still sticking with the heteronormative gender roles in this day and age ? have we not grown out of it yet ?
THIS DOESNT MEAN I DONT HAVE AN ISSUE W HYPERFEMININE HARRY AND HYPERMASCULINE DRACO TOO. i despise heteronormative gender role coding. let queer ships be queer without the lens of heteronormativity.
