Mapping U.S. State and Canadian Province data. Part 31: Poor Health.
turbopony:
I am doing a series of maps to compare Canadian provinces with U.S. states. I hope you like them and if you have any ideas of maps you'd like to see, feel free to suggest in the comments!
This map shows the percentage of the adult population (18+) who report that their health is poor or fair (as opposed to good, very good, or excellent). About one in six Americans and one in ten Canadians are not in good health. In Canada there is very limited variation from Quebec west, it ranges from 10 in Quebec to 12 in Saskatchewan. The Atlantic Provinces are the least healthy, with the worst overall being Nova Scotia (16).
Rates of bad health in the United States are higher in Appalachia and the South and lower in New England, the west, and around the capital. The healthiest state is Connecticut (12) which is still below Canada's average. In the most unhealthy states about a quarter of the population are not in good health: West Virginia (26), Pennsylvania (25), and Kentucky (23).
The degree to which national differences reflects differences in measurement rather than differences in culture, diet, climate, healthcare, and so on is unclear. What constitutes poor health is subjective to the respondent, but when the maps of diabetes and obesity come out, you'll see clear parallels.

The Segal Group’s Model Multi-Employer Pension Fund Decreases in Fourth Quarter of 2018
Poor Asset Performance and Increased Liabilities Contributed to Decline
NEW YORK — The funded status of The Segal Group’s model multi-employer pension plan (MEPP) decreased by 7 percentage points to 95 percent during the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2018. Over the quarter, assets decreased 4 percent and liabilities increased 3 percent, as shown in the graph.
“The Canadian equity market continued to decline during Q4,” said Ruo Tan, President of Segal Rogerscasey Canada. “The U.S. equity market also had a negative quarter, and international equity markets had a poor result as well.”
Cameron McNeill, Segal’s Canadian Business Leader, noted, “The benchmark discount rate used to develop the MEPP’s liabilities decreased by approximately 11 basis points in Q4.”
Segal also noted that there was a modest 0.9 percent increase in actual hours worked year over year for all industries combined. The table shows differences by industry.
Percentage Change in Hours Worked, by Industry, Q4 2017–Q4 2018 Construction 1.8% Manufacturing -2.1% Transportation & Warehousing 5.0% Utilities 20.9% Wholesale & Retail Trade -2.1% Source: Statistics Canada, CANSIM table 282-0092

1 Databases for Eco/Finance Papers
1. World Bank,
2. Fed. St. Louis or FRED,
3. OECD Data.

Statistics Canada: Labour Market and the Economy and Cannabis
Canadian Economy
“This article in the Economic Insights series provides users with an integrated summary of recent changes in output, employment, household demand, international trade and prices. Organized as a statistical summary of major indicators, the report is designed to inform about recent developments in the Canadian economy, highlighting major changes in the economic data during the second half of 2017 and early 2018. The article is accompanied by a chart book that provides additional information on recent economic developments. Unless otherwise noted, the tabulations presented in this report are based on seasonally adjusted data available in CANSIM on April 6, 2018.”
Statistics Canada, April 23, 2018: "Recent Developments in the Canadian Economy, Spring 2018,″ by Guy Gellatly and Elizabeth Richards (13 pages, PDF)
“Jenn McRae, B.C. lead organizer of the Urban Worker Project, said labour market indicators measured monthly by Statistics Canada — which include employment, unemployment, and full-time versus part-time job numbers — aren’t enough to paint a picture of jobs in Canada. ‘The labour market has changed drastically,’ she said, but the way Canada measures the health of that market hasn’t kept pace.”
The Star, April 23, 2018: “Broaden labour market stats to include job quality indicators, advocate says,” by Alex McKeen
Urban Worker Project website
Labour Market
"Annual review of the labour market, 2017, released today in the Labour Statistics: Research Papers series, analyses the Canadian labour market in 2017 using a combination of major indicators from the Labour Force Survey; the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours; the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey; and Employment Insurance statistics. The focus is on national trends, as well as on key provincial and industrial sector changes.”
“Employment growth outpaced population growth among all major demographic groups, with record-high participation rates for the core age population (25 to 54 years) and for people aged 55 and older, driven mostly by women. Despite relatively strong employment growth among youth aged 15 to 24, their participation rate was little changed in 2017. There was also strong employment growth among Aboriginal people and recent immigrants.”
“Several longer-term labour market trends continued in 2017, including increasing employment among older workers, a decline in involuntary part-time work, and an increase in temporary employment.”
The Daily, April 24 2018: “Annual review of the labour market, 2017,″ by Andrew Fields, Emmanuelle Bourbeau, and Martha Patterson (21 pages, PDF)
Cannabis Producers
“Statistics Canada conducted a survey Canada's licensed cannabis producers in the fourth quarter of 2017 and early 2018. Businesses in this survey are cannabis producers that are licensed by Health Canada as of September 2017. The survey collected information on production, inventories, revenue, expenses, employment and capital expenditures for the years 2015 and 2016. Additional information was obtained from the Canada Revenue Agency's corporate income tax and payroll deduction records and from Health Canada's regulatory data.”
Statistics Canada, April 26, 2018: “A snapshot of licensed cannabis producers,” by Ian Donegan and Philip Smith

The Cost of Being A Skilled Professional
Sitting with my grandmother listening to her stories I often hear her mention how she never used to need a license to drive, she never had a cell phone and she didn't need to graduate from high-school to get a good job. When she mentions her education and the levels present in her era I often find myself comparing current times to hers. As it stands now you have very limited options for work if you don’t have a high school diploma, and even more so you're required to have some sort of post secondary education to get a well paying job you can sustain off of. When I graduated high school I knew that I wanted to go to college, but the cost of it scared me. I had never had large amounts of debt before so the idea of going thousands of dollars in debt for education wasn't my ideal plan. I ended up settling for a shorter course that would get me a job but wouldn't put me too far under. However the economy wasn't so kind and the availability of jobs I had trained for was very limited for a fresh 20 year old with no previous experience. I realized then that I needed to go back to school to get a more secure job. When I first started browsing new careers I was horrified, not because I would be stuck going to school for a few years, but because I would be selling my soul to Canada/Alberta student loans for years to come.
I almost didn’t take the jump into the Bachelor of Science Nursing program at Red Deer College because I simply could not afford the schooling, but with student loans and a part time job I am some how making it work. Money, it controls everything. So the question popped into my head, if we are requiring that so many people have a higher education, why are we making it so expensive? I am fortunate enough to qualify for student loans but I know there are many who do not and post secondary education is simply not an option. In this generation we are requiring that our citizens have a increased education and yet we are making it so expensive we are losing out on many people who would like to obtain a higher education and thus would increase the amount of skilled professionals we have.
In the past decade tuition costs has increased 40% (Cain, 2016). Stats Canada also released information that stated “ Canadian full-time students in undergraduate programs paid, on average, $6,373 in tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year, 2.8% higher than the 2015/2016 average ($6,201)” (Government of Canada , 2016). It is shown that education costs has increased each year in the past decade, making it even less of an option for those already struggling. Follow the link to see the increase of education costs since the 2013 release.
http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a26?lang=eng&retrLang=eng&id=4770122&&pattern=&stByVal=1&p1=1&p2=31&tabMode=dataTable&csid=
In order for Canada to continue progression we need our citizens to have better access to education so we can have a steady influx of trained professionals. If we continue increasing the cost of education we may reach a crisis point where we do not have enough trained individuals to meet the demands of society. An article published in 2015 discusses how tuition costs may affect a students decision to go to school or not, and as a personal experience I understand this entirely. (Atherton, 2015). However, studies have been done that contradict this directly stating that tuition costs do not affect a students decisions to attend college (Rivard, 2009). Although the statistics are there it is my personal belief that tuition costs does deter people from attending school, maybe not forever but at least for some time. I am a prime example, situation forced me back to getting a better education and the only way to get it was to acquire more debt in student loans.
When I consider my grandmothers stories about her time, the education required isn't the only difference. The cost of living is much higher now than it was back then, requiring society to constantly be pushing and straining to stay afloat. The cost of education is not the only problem Canadians can have, but it is one we could do something about. The video below is a proposal for the way free tuition could be achieved in the states, if Canada could do something similar we could make it easier for Canadians to progress. Now some limitations to the video below do exist in that it is a US video, and the economy and logistics are different in each country. However, the same idea could lead us to a tuition free country, find the allocated resources and pool them into education.
youtube
Free tuition may not be the solution to maintaining a steady stream of skilled professionals with a quality education. Some could argue that with free education there is the potential for abuse of that system which is understandable, but the work required to get those degrees is still the same. I believe the key to advancement is free tuition, making education more accessible to those who otherwise wouldn't be able to go or would drown in student loans as I am. I will come out of my program a trained and skilled professional, but I will also be over $85,000 in debt.
