it was unfortunately a nearly-full moon tonight, but it was beautifully clear and i did just get my coma corrector, so i decided to go out and get a picture of M44 (the beehive cluster) :3

unfortunately i found out after processing it that i used the coma corrector wrong (apparently you're supposed to remove the extension tube when using it with a DSLR... whoopsies ^^'). so that's why the star shapes are Like That

this was also the first time i took flats and it definitely makes a difference, the vignetting is greatly reduced (tho still kinda there? i guess it'll take some experimentation to figure out the best process for taking flats + processing)

anyway this night has definitely been a helpful learning experience and oh god i have work at 7:30 am tomorrow and it's almost 1 am why did i do this

taken with an apertura 6 inch F/4 imaging newtonian with a (wrongly used >w<) coma corrector, an HEQ5 mount, and a canon EOS rebel T5

I have a little Canon Rebel EOS T5 that I got at a pawnshop a few years ago. It was $100 and came with a scuffed 50mm lens. It works great. I meant to use it for getting pictures of fursuiters at cons, and I had also been thinking about maintaining a Youtube channel for a bit. Obviously that never really came to be, but I decided to finally get a little more serious about using it. I snagged a cheap 75-300mm lens off of ebay and took it for a spin at a park. Turns out when you get pictures of things, you also gotta edit it to make it look good. Here's my attempt.

I use a Canon EOS Rebel t5 that I purchased used, as DSLR cameras go it's a better affordable beginner model than some of the crazy expensive ones. I recommend checking ebay/craigslist/etc for deals if you're like me and don't have a lot of money to spend. But as digital cameras go a DSLR is really good for high quality photos as well as flexibility with different kinds of lenses. I'm fairly new to photography, I've only been trying for about a year, so I've been happy to notice that a lot of the frustrations I had with my work were mostly because I was using my shitty Android phone camera and not because I'm not cut out for it!! You just have a lot more to work with when using a camera that was designed to capture images well and not, yknow, fit in a phone. And with a camera that has a larger and more nuanced file output than a jpeg image.

went out again tonight and got a picture of the star clusters M35 (center) and NGC 2158 (the lil fuzzy patch down and to the right of center)

M35 is a 175 million year old star cluster about 3000 light-years away, and NGC 2158 is a much older (about 2 billion years old), more compact cluster about 15,000 light-years away

still learning things as i go along! this time i realized my telescope's collimation was a bit off, and i wasn't able to fix it while i was out, and hopefully once i get that done the stars will be looking sharper and more nicely-shaped :3
