The Art of Hiroshi Yoshida
Hiroshi Yoshida was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock print-maker. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is noted especially for his excellent landscape prints. Yoshida travelled widely, and was particularly known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done in traditional Japanese woodblock style.

How I Study Japanese Texts
Right now I’m mainly reading Level 1 books of the Japanese Graded Readers series (which I talk a little about in this post). It’s fairly easy for me to understand, so rather than just reading it, I go through a few more steps to learn from what I read.
Read without looking up words. The first time I read a book, I avoid the dictionary and just try to get the gist of what it’s saying through what I already know and the pictures provided, if there are any. This is a good way of measuring your level.
Transcribe the text line by line while looking up words you don’t know and looking out for grammar points. On the second read, I write down a line of text after I read it. I’m not too nitpicky about my stroke order because it’s not too hard to guess a kanji’s stroke order. I bought a notebook with squared boxes for this since I believe it helps with handwriting and spacing, but regular notebooks are fine. After writing down a line, I look up words I don’t know from that line, if any. I write the reading and definition on the side. For grammar, I take note on grammar points I’m currently studying by circling it. If there are any particle usages that I don’t understand, I look it up and jot down the usage on the side.
Write a translation. After I finish transcribing the entire book, I write a little summary of translation on the bottom. It isn’t really necessary, but it’s helpful for me to write out exact translations rather than just having it in my head.
Have a space to practice kanji characters. I always pick out ten or so kanji characters or compound words to practice my writing. It helps with memorizing the vocabulary as well as what exactly the kanji looks like so I have better recall when I reencounter it.
Read the book a third time, out loud. This time, I know pretty much exactly what every line is saying, so it’s just a final review. Reading it out loud is just helpful for speaking.
I hope this was helpful! I feel like I’m getting a lot more out of these books through this process. What do you do when you read a Japanese book?

Beginners Japanese textbooks
So I get a lot of questions here and on Instagram about the books I use for Japanese and what I would recommend to beginners. So I thought I’d put together a little list of books I would suggest you start off with as a beginner in Japanese (these are all books I have used myself or had/would consider using) Obviously I’m not saying you need all of these books, pick one and see how it goes (although I do recommend using more than one resource)! I may do another post like this for intermediate learners if there’s enough interest (with the textbook series they will take you to a higher level, but this is just recommendations as a starting point) ^^
Learning Hiragana and Katakana Flashcards

ASKING ABOUT JAPANESE (IN JAPANESE)
****If there are corrections or additions I should make to this list, please send me a message!****
So I just started using HelloTalk for Japanese, and found out pretty quickly that asking people to help you IN Japanese gets you MUCH better answers so long as you’re up to the challenge of figuring out slightly more complicated explanations! Here are some ways to do that:
THINGS TO ASK
Can I ask you a question?
ちょっと質問していいですか?
How do you say “_____” in Japanese?
「___」は日本語で何と言いますか?
日本語で「___」はどうやって言いますか?
What does “_____” mean?
「___」の意味はなんですか?
「___」って、どういう意味ですか?
Could you please correct my sentences/check them for errors?
文章直してください/くれませんか/もらえませんか
間違いがあるかどうかチェックしてもらえますか?
What is the difference between “__” and “__”?
「__」と「__」の違いは何ですか?
Which one sounds more natural?
どちらがもっと自然に聞こえますか?
どちらの方が自然ですか?
What kind of situation should I use it in?
どんな場合に使いますか?
Is there another way to say it?
日本語で同じような言い回しがありますか?
How would you say it?
___さんなら、これを何と言いますか?
Do people normally use this word/phrase?
このフレーズ/言葉を普段使いますか?
How do I use (this word/phrase)
「___」をどうやって使いますか?
Is it similar to/Is it like “_____,” for example?
「___」という事ですか?
「___」と同じような意味ですか?
AND IF U DIDNT REALLY GET THEIR CORRECTIONS/COMMENTS:
I’m sorry, I didn’t really understand “_____.” Could you explain it to me?
(すみません、「___」はよく分からなくて)、ちょっと説明してもらえませんか?
I’m sorry, would you mind explaining your corrections?
すみません、訂正を説明してもらえませんか?
OTHER TIPS
Say thank you afterward!
The sentences above are mostly starting points. The more you talk to people, the more you’ll notice how people ask things like “Oh, can you explain that thing on the bottom?” or “So it’s okay if I say this instead of this?” etc. etc. But these sentences will help you get on your feet!
What I sometimes like to do if they’re using really complicated Japanese to explain to me, it try to explain it in my own words and then add っていうことですか? to find out if I’m understanding right!
Challenge yourself by answering Japanese-speakers’s questions in Japanese! You’d be surprised how much you can learn about explaining just by reading explanations!
Good luck! Please let me know if you have any questions! <3 頑張ってください!皆さん何か聞きたいことがあったら、何でも聞いてくださいね!<3
