Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 14 - Favorite Series
I have a lot of series bookmarked, but due to time constraints, I often default to shorter stories. There are a few series that I devoured though and I'm grateful for @hprecfest for reminding me to rec them. All of them have excellent podfic versions too!
Do It All Over Again by @dracowillhearaboutthis (Podfic read by @sandstripe) Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 468,229 Length: 34:34:15 Rating: E
This is a canon rewrite beginning before first year, when 11 year old Draco receives a letter from his future self. I found it to be well thought out and developed Draco's character in an interesting way.
As for the podfic, the narrator themself states in the notes that the read fast, and they absolutely do. But they speak clearly, recording quality is good, there's no bumps or breathing or other unnecessary sounds, and if you slow it down to 75 or 80 %, I find it to be totally listenable. I honestly don't know how they speak so quickly, it's superhuman!
The Mirror of Ecidyrue by starbrigid (Podfic of the first 4.5 books on Spotify by starseeker) Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 1,219,490 Length: long Rating: T to eventually E
This is also a canon rewrite, but with Draco going unwillingly back in time. He doesn't immediately become buddy-buddy with Harry; it's actually Hermione who befriends him. There's funny and angsty and really thoughtful canon adherence and divergence. I haven't finished the series yet, but I've enjoyed it so much. Starseeker reads it very beautifully and still updates sporadically (believe me, I know what a massive undertaking it is to record a series like this of 1.2 million words!), so I'm kind of holding out hope that they'll finish and I'll be able to listen to the rest. They're currently abut halfway through book 5.
************************************************************************
A couple of self-recs for @etl-echo-audiobooks, not for my own recordings ...
Rights and Wrongs series by @lovesbitca8 Podfic read by @beatificbean (with @etl-echo-audiobooks) Pairing: Draco x Hermione Word count: 698,707 Length: over 50 hours Rating: E
Pick your poison based on your mood:
A little angst but mostly fluff: The Right Thing to Do (Hermione's POV)
A lot of angst and redemption: All the Wrong Things (Draco's POV)
Dark, Voldy wins alternate universe: The Auction
@beatificbean reads all three of these stories beautifully (not a surprise). I love a Draco redemption, so all three of these stories hit the spot for me. Mind the tags for The Auction.
Wait and Hope series by @mightbewriting Podfic read by @beatificbean (with @etl-echo-audiobooks) Pairing: Draco x Hermione, Theo x Blaise, Pansy x Neville Word count: 389,063 Length: over 35 hours Rating: E
@heyjude19-writing already said everything I would say about this series, and much more eloquently (obviously). I'll just add that I almost used this rec for both Comfort fics and Fics that make you cry (porque no los dos?), and that @beatificbean does a beautiful job with this series as well. She just cranks out the top-tier drama and romance; I aspire to someday be so prolific and talented. I mean, she recorded over ONE MILLION words just for these two recs, and there's lots more where that came from.

Timing Ramble
I was going to ramble about reproduction, complete with cute drawings of babies, but I started writing a little note about time, and then I got distracted. Let's tackle this first.
I think I speak for a lot of us when I say the timing in Bionicle is kinda annoying. This is generally the way I handle it:
(Sorry that my maths are probably garbage. Knowing me, I probably messed up one number and then threw off everything else. I tried to keep it simple.)
One of the biggest sticking points to me is that Kiina was described as "in her mid 30s", yet she was in the Core War, AND Gresh was considered too young to have been in the Core War, but old enough to have experienced it.
Bionicle characters process time differently than humans do, and/or their words for passing time aren't the same as ours. Canonically, Spherus Magnan days (and MU Days) last 36 hours split into morning-noon and noon-midnight. We don't know how long an "hour" or "year" are, though, as far as I know. We don't even know if a "year" refers to a full rotation around Solis Magna. It could refer to something else.
Cervatus lived for about 265,000 years before dying of natural causes. Let's say he lived longer than the average, and the average is 250,000 to clean the numbers.
However, the Great Beings also extended the lifespans of SMnans. Let's say they slowed down the adult span, so an SMnan is an adult for twice as long as a human is. At age 20, you would feel 19. 30 years later at age 50, you would feel 35.
Human lifespans average about 85ish- 3 of infant, 9 of child, 6 of adolescence, 50 of adulthood, and 15 of seniorhood.
One year for humans is 1.2% of our lifespans. Presuming a human gets that lifespan increase, they now live to 130-140ish, so now one year is .71% of their lifespan.
.71% of 250,000 is 1,775. They process/pass about 1,800 years as we pass 1, or in other words, when they say something took "1,000 years", imagine having done that thing for 5.5 months. The Island of Mata Nui was inhabited for about 5.5 months, which isn't too bad an idea given how low the technology they had and how little of the island they had tamed. There were supposed to be 1,000ish Matoran on Mata Nui, and in 5.5 months, 1,000ish people working that diligently could likely accomplish what we saw there.
The one downside to this is when things happen in month or single year increments. I don't think Farshtey, or whoever else picked these numbers, can really comprehend how long this time takes.
Generally, I read "one year" or "one month" increments the same way I read "one foot". We know there is a standard unit of measurement (Bio, Kio, and Mio), but we also know that, as Farshtey put it, "things don't translate properly" to chalk up why occasionally characters reference things out-of-universe, like foot/mile. I honestly loved how he was roleplaying as just some scribe translating and transcribing a story.
Anyway, for small ranges, I would compare them more to human experience (translated poorly) while for large ranges, I would take them literally. In other words, 100,000 years is 100,000 years (56 years to us), while 1 year is 1,775 years (1 year to us). This would mean the events of the book took place longer than the Matoran were on Mata Nui before the Toa, which given how quickly they changed the Toa's mask statues to match their Nuva masks, isn't actually that farfetched. Matoran move fast.
An Agori, if their child development was similar to ours, has the following aging:
1 year = 1,775
Infant until 5,325 years
Child until 21,300 years
Adolescent until 31,950 years
Adult until 209,450
Average Death by old age around 248,500, give or take a few ten thousand.
This means the Core War was about 56 years ago. Presuming Glatorian are expected to fight basically as soon as they can keep up with the other warriors, let's say they start combat equivalent to age 10. We'll put Kiina around 13 in the Core War, or (in story: 23,075), and around her mid 30s now (123,075). Farshtey's estimation was her being in her mid 30s, so this weird math I pulled out of my ass coincidentally works perfectly. Gresh was 6 or 7 (or in story: 12,425) and around late 20s to early 30s
Any time I mention "years" after this, presume I am running off of this math. I will use the human comparisons (ex. Gestation takes almost 1 year) when rambling, but in the actual fanfictions and/or comics, I may switch back and forth if I don't remember to exclusively stick to in-story timing (ex. A pregnant character describing their gestation as having taken almost 1,700 years) and in the same vein, if a character in the story said, "Makuta take 9,000 years to wean and Skakdi take 600 years". The reader would know (presuming a human weans at 1.5 years) "Makuta take three times as long as a human child to wean, and Skakdi take 1/3rd the time a human takes to wean".
At the current point of the story, the first generation of MUian Second-Gens have just reached young adulthood. Presuming this means they are in their early 20s, they are around 40,000 years old. Kiina is 163000, or in her 40s.
I started my Headcanon in 2009, and didn't actually read the Bara Magna stories until years later, and even then, literally only started caring about them this year. That's why the BMnans, save Malum, Sahmad, don't appear in my HC at all (those two appear prominently because I actually got their sets, so I had reason to care about them). This is also why I accidentally gave Chirox's daughter the same name as a Glatorian: Tarix, although given that the Glatorian's name is pronounced Tah-rix, and the Makuta is Tehr-ix, I might just retcon her name to change the spelling.
Terix sounds too close to "Teridax" though.
Also of important note, the MUians weren't really aging before, and in their new organic bodies, they started out physically younger. The MUians were set to a physical age of between 25-40 depending on how experienced the person had (therefore how much more of a developed brain they need).
TL;DR
In order to get a Bio-Character's comparative human age, divide the number by 1775, unless their age is over 40,000. If it's over 40,000, then subtract 40,000, cut that number in half, divide by 1775, then add 18.

Deliveries of the Su-57 to the Russian Air Force with second-stage engine "will occur in the near future"
Fernando Valduga
Russia's Rostec State Corporation is prepared to deliver Sukhoi Su-57 combat aircraft with the advanced Izdeliye-30 (Product 30) or second stage engine.
According to a Rostec statement of May 12, the Su-57 is currently in testing with the second-stage engine, with plans to deliver aircraft equipped with these new engines in the near future.
“The Su-57 is being tested with a second-stage engine. Deliveries of aircraft with new engines are planned for the near future,” the company said.
Although not confirmed, it is expected that all future Su-57 will be equipped with the Izdeliye-30 (AL-51F-1) engine, marking a crucial step to the full realization of the Stealth capabilities of the Su-57 in series production.
youtube
Since the end of 2022, the Russian Aerospace Forces have received several batches of Su-57 aircraft, some with the new engine, promising greater thrust and supercruise capabilities.
The Izdeliye-30 engine has a post-combustion thrust of 18,000 kgf and a maximum thrust of 11,000 kgf, resulting in a 1.2-fold increase in the thrust-to-weight ratio. This increases the ascent rates to 330-350 m/s and agility during maneuvers. It also raises the service ceiling and supersonic cruising speed to 2,150-2,200 km/h, with a maximum speed of 2,600-2,700 km/h.
The introduction of the Izdeliye-30 engine is expected to improve game thrust, fuel efficiency and reduce weight and maintenance requirements.
A striking feature of the Izdeliye-30 engine is its exhaust nozzle that increases thrust efficiency, stability, maneuverability and reduces engine noise. The addition of chevron-shaped exhaust nozzles significantly reduces the aircraft's infrared (IR) and radar signatures, improving its stealth characteristics.
The AL-51F-1 (Izdeliye 30) is an advanced turbofan engine with two-axis, low bypass post-combustion design. Notable improvements over its predecessor, the AL-41F1, include fiberglass plastic IGVs and convergent-divergent nozzles with serrated flaps to minimize radar visibility. The AL-51F-1 engine also shows a 19% increase in the thrust/weight ratio, a 6.4% increase in specific thrust and a 9% reduction in specific fuel consumption.

Google Planned to Sponsor IDF Conference That Now Denies Google Was Sponsor
New Post has been published on https://sa7ab.info/2024/08/06/google-planned-to-sponsor-idf-conference-that-now-denies-google-was-sponsor/
Google Planned to Sponsor IDF Conference That Now Denies Google Was Sponsor
The “IT For IDF” conference in Rishon LeZion, just south of Tel Aviv, brought together tech firms from across the world to support the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza and beyond.
Many of the assembled companies are not household names in the United States, but several multinational firms — like Nokia, Dell, and Canon — were present at July 10 event.
The mission they had gathered to support was clear. Onstage, a brigadier general with the Israeli military gave a presentation that connected the Nakba, the 1967 Arab–Israeli War, the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, the current war on Gaza, and more wars in the decades to come. His call to action splashed across the big screen: “Each generation and its own turn — this is our watch!”
One company, however, was conspicuously absent: Google.
For the last two years, Google had been a marquee sponsor of IT For IDF — the company is a natural partner for the event, given Google Cloud’s foundational role in Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract aimed at modernizing cloud computing operations across Israeli government that it shares with Amazon.
This year was supposed to be no different and, until just days before the conference started, a Google Cloud logo was displayed alongside other sponsors on the IT For IDF website. Then Google abruptly vanished from the site without explanation.
When asked by a news outlet about the logo’s disappearance, the conference organizers claimed they weren’t aware Google had been on their website and suggested its inclusion was an error. “It’s possible that we used their logo by mistake but they are not a sponsor,” a spokesperson told 404 Media, “as far as I know.”
Google’s own corporate schedule, reviewed by The Intercept, seems to contradict this statement. The document includes upcoming Google events in Israel, and IT For IDF 2024 is on the list. On this internal schedule, Google is explicitly labeled as a co-sponsor of the conference in partnership with CloudEx, an Israeli cloud computing consultancy.
CloudEx CEO Ariel Munafo moonlights as an adviser to the IDF’s Center of Computers and Information Systems, known as Mamram, where he is helping other IDF units build out their cloud computing operations, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Google did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Read our complete coverage
Israel’s War on Gaza
The apparent about-face on Google’s sponsorship of IT For IDF is just one recent example of companies seeking to distance themselves from Israel’s brutal assault on the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians. Though much business has gone on as usual amid the destruction, some companies have, at various times, and to various extents, shifted their business plans in Israel.
Google continues to work with the IDF, as it has for years on the Nimbus contract. The company’s odd vanishing act from a conference focused on a lucrative customer relationship stands as one of the most high-profile examples of what appears to be PR anxiety.
The tech giant has shown some squeamishness over some of Nimbus’s objectives in the past. The project has drawn international criticism and prompted a dissent campaign among Google employees, over 50 of whom were fired in April for protesting the contract. The Israeli government emphasizes Nimbus’s military dimensions, but Google has persistently tried to downplay or outright deny that its contract for Israel includes military work.
Close-up of an official photo from the IT For IDF event showing the painted-over sponsor display. Photo: IT For IDF
Official event photos posted to a public album and reviewed by The Intercept suggest that Google’s connection to the IDF networking event was literally whitewashed before it began. Official photos of a step-and-repeat backdrop for the conference contains all the event’s original sponsors’ logos, sans Google — and includes one square that appears to have been hastily painted over. Neither Google nor People and Computers, the conference’s organizer, responded when asked whose logo was underneath the paint.
The logo of Cisco, which claimed to 404 Media that it was “not a sponsor of this conference,” remained on display.
Even without a presence at the conference, Google loomed over an event dedicated to the prosecution of a war from which it has struggled to distance itself.
One of the event’s big draws was a presentation by Col. Racheli Dembinski of Mamram, on the Israeli military’s use of cloud platforms during the war in Gaza, during which she highlighted the role of Google Cloud, according to Israeli press.
A later talk presented by the “technology lead for Google Cloud Platform and CloudEx” noted that CloudEx’s partnership with Google entailed “working closely on several production cloud-hosted projects” with the Ministry of Defense.
Commit, another cloud computing reseller that was recently named “2024 Google Cloud Sales Partner of the Year for Israel” for its work implementing Project Nimbus, took to the stage to hawk its battlefield management software.
Related Documents Reveal Advanced AI Tools Google Is Selling to Israel
Google’s insistence that Project Nimbus is peaceful in nature is at odds with the public record. Nimbus training materials published by The Intercept in 2022 cited the Ministry of Defense as a customer. Recent reporting by Wired detailed the project’s connection to the IDF since its inception. When it was announced in 2021, Project Nimbus was touted by the Israeli Finance Ministry as serving the “defense establishment.”
In May, journalist Jack Poulson reported on Google’s long-running collaboration with IDF information technology units like Mamram, noting an intensification in such work since October 7.
Despite all this, Google has routinely refused to discuss the Nimbus work or its humanitarian implications with the press. The company generally responding to inquiries about the project or criticism of its military nature with a boilerplate statement that Nimbus is “not directed at highly sensitive or classified military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services.”
The Intercept revealed in May that Nimbus requires two prominent Israeli weapons manufacturers, Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, to use Google and Amazon cloud computing services in their work.

Do I have great news for you: I’ve taken a look at Semeru’s canonical dialogue post 1.2 update… and tossed a good 50% out the window. My version of Semeru is pretty different from the other fanfic versions of Semeru, and they’re also distinct from each other. And it’s all great!!! Fanfic is perfect for doing your own thing! Sure we use it as a base, but don’t be afraid to get experimental with it 😄
(And as someone who is also in the weird in-between with CI and BG3, please do share!)
Would you guys mind if I plug my (mostly empty currently) baldur's gate 3/DnD OC writing blog here? I also keep wanting to write for Coral Island but I keep getting too afraid of mischaracterizing characters since there isn't exhaustive lists of their dialogues and cut scenes and such

I’ll be taking the filter off the 1.2/50 more often. Obviously it’s a no-brainer, but we say we’re gonna do it and then don’t. Take the filter off when it’s safe. Like in a cushy studio.

nah there’s massive flaws with that. 1) america’s standing military is craaazily massive for a country on Earth, but we actually have little-no idea what a standing military would look like for planets in the GFFA. 2) Military personnel includes all the support staff (who mostly weren’t clones)
3) .41% x 195.0 trillion is 0.799 trillion, or 799 billion. (They accidentally did 41%, not 0.41%) 4) Using a figure for a standing military is a bit pointless as we know that the Galactic Republic didn’t have one. I don’t remember any of the individual planets having one. I wonder if planets/systems/sectors were even allowed to have a standing army and be part of the republic? I know the Galactic Senate is loosely modelled on the US government, and each state doesn’t have their own army (right?) they all just make up the country’s army.
5) there are way way more than 24,372 planets, as ‘system’ here means star/planetary system, which means more than one planet (though obviously not all inhabited). That being said, there were likely to be more that 24,372 systems; on Wookieepedia: “There were 7,100,000,000 stars in the known galaxy, with approximately 3,200,000,000 habitable star systems. Only about a billion of these systems had life. Only 69,000,000 of those systems met population requirements for Imperial representation.” The GL estimation came from 1977. It’s likely to have been later retconned to mean 24,372 sectors, with sectors made up of multiple systems. ~25,000 senators makes sense to me (though I can’t find a definite figure online, only ‘more than 2000′, which is incredibly unhelpful) as there was the whole deal with the delegation of 2000, if that’s roughly 8% of the senate that’s a damn big deal (as Padmé made it seem) but nowhere near a majority. Let’s say the 69 Million figure is correct, and you need 1 Billion sentients to get senate rep (though, important, not your own senator, just to be able to vote for your sector’s senator) that makes 69′000′000′000′000′000 which is (I think) 69 Quadrillion sentients in the GFFA. I’d go for somewhere between 40 and 50 Quadrillion being in the Republic, as Hutt space is quite big.
6) Calculating by population isn’t going to get us anywhere because huge swathes of the galaxy saw no fighting at all, especially inner core (the most populous), so I’m going to look at individual battles. At the battle of Coruscant there were over a thousand venator class star destroyers defending against Grievous, with the majority coming from the open circle fleet. The venator class SDs have an attachment of 2000 troops, with a thousand in the open circle fleet/armada that means that, at full population, there would have been 2′000′000 troops in the OCF. Obi-Wan commands the OCF, and also commands 1 of 10 system armies. Assuming his fleet is unusually large (apparently it gained a lot of vessels over the three years) let’s conservatively assume most other high generals only have 200 venators. That’s 400′000 troops, times nine, so 3′600′000, plus OWK’s 2′000′000, so 5′600′000 in the Navy on board venators alone. Pretend we started off with this many, after 3 years a good amount will have died and been replaced, maybe 50%? Taking us to 8′400′000 troops. Then we’ve got so many troops not on board the SDs, training on Kamino or permanently stationed on a planet, also I’m ONLY looking at SDs, not any other type of ship in the fleet. We’re then looking at at least 10′000′000 troops...except: 7)“200′000 units ready, with a million more well on the way” - Lama Su to OWK. No way in hell they managed to ramp up their production that much, especially since it was only double-speed aging. This is canon, so there’s no getting around that initial 1.2 million figure, despite it being absolutely ridiculous.
(7.1) Fighting a droid army with cloned soldiers is stupid and doesn’t work at all. The Kaminoans had 1 little planet on which to do their cloning and raise their army, with all sorts of things to consider like food, clothing, defective products, etc. The CIS had an almost infinite amount of planets on which to build and store their droids, with significantly less limiting factors. Droids, once built (quickly and by other droids at that) could be stored and turned off, requiring no further expense other than storage space. Any defective units could be recycled. The only real limitation is resourcing the initial components, but in the GFFA there is just so much of everything that it doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. The CIS droid army should have absolutely crushed the Republic in days. They had almost no constraints.) I know I had other points, but my brain has run out of energy for the evening. regardless, 3 million is ridiculous and way too little.
I have a baseline level of annoyance directed at Karen Traviss that exists at all times, but I am so annoyed at her 3-4 million clones estimation and how it's just turned into the fandom's canon. Like, the gffa is massive! Does she have any concept of space/numbers??? Because there were 70 million soldiers fighting in WWII alone, and if you multiply that by multiple worlds and multiple fronts and whole sectors of space with dozens or hundred of planets, 3-4 million people fighting across all of that territory is laughable, even if they are all technically supersoldiers. And that doesn't even account for losses, when we know from canon that there were losses of over 30k soldiers in a single day.
Just. The lack of logic is infuriating. Traviss pulled that number out of her ass, and fandom just rolling with it makes no sense if you think about it for even a few seconds.

Greece evaluates sale of Mirage 2000 jets to India 🇮🇳
Although the expected selling price is modest, Athens sees an opportunity for broader strategic cooperation with New Delhi.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/08/2024 - 19:28in Military
The leadership of the Hellenic Air Force is exploring the possibility of selling the 18 Mirage 2000 EGM/BGM to India, a proposal that was communicated to the Prime Minister's office and the Ministry of National Defense of Greece.
The aircraft served until 2022 in the 332ª "Hawk" Squadron, and most of them are not in flight condition, while some were cannibalized to keep the others flying. However, it seems that there is fertile ground between the two parties and do not rule out the possibility of the subject of the sale of the fighters to be discussed during the future visit of Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis to New Delhi.
Squadron 332 struggled with problems of availability of the Mirage 2000, resulting in the abandonment of some aircraft on the runways of Tanagra and others cannibalized because they were beyond the operational life.
At the end of 2023, New Delhi decided to communicate its interest to the Greek part in acquiring used Mirage 2000, as it plans to keep these fighters in service for at least another decade. Athens, aiming to further strengthen defense relations with India, has already decided to sell the retired Mirage. The Air Force General Staff expects to profit
However, the criterion for its sale is more political than economic. In the General Staff of the Greek Air Force, which is directly involved, they do not expect profits. On the contrary, they maintain modest expectations regarding the selling price of aircraft, which are unfortunately in poor condition. The experts' estimate is that, at best, they will be sold for a few million euros.
These 18 Mirage, which carried the weight of the interceptions in the skies of the Aegean Sea, were withdrawn from service in January 2022 with the arrival of the Rafale. The aircraft were inactivated due to lack of support long before the arrival of the new French fighters. However, there are still users of the French delta fighter, such as India, which maintains about 50 aircraft in three combat squads and may be interested in supplementing any losses or renewing its stock of spare parts for existing ones.
The Hellenic Air Force is also evaluating the future of the newest Mirage 2000-5 operated by Squadron 331 "Teseu". Although the support contract has improved its availability, concerns about its compatibility with evolving technologies and high integration costs, such as the proposed Link-16 terminal, have led to a reassessment.
