My take on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. P2, Positive review!

I included the pros and cons on the previous slam- but I didn’t really give it too many pros. I decided to make a part two because ima admit- I was harsh haha

ROTTMNT is fashionable, aesthetic, fun, colorful, and so much more. I was hyped to find out that Nickelodeon was making a new TMNT series. I still believe that the personalities of the turtles are really different, but it doesn’t make them terrible! I mean Donnie is literally a genius, Mikey looks so much more huggable, Raph literally is boyfriend material, and I KIN to Leo.

Even though I described it as “the high school girl” side of me, it is still a big side of me. I cannot with that fashion episode- my greedy hands can’t wait to draw Leo in a suit. I already drew Donnie (I used a reference- I didn’t trace. Just in case you find something similar to it. I don’t use refs anymore, but I drew that when I need refs. Of course I need the occasional pose and anatomy help- but that’s really all.) I also made an animatic on scratch on the ye old days of ROTTMNT.

The aesthetic of Rise is unmatched to any other show. Literally cannot find any tv series close to it. It’s original- and that’s why I slammed so hard on it. With originality, comes infinite pros and cons. I am speechless with this show for the most part- and that slam I made was a mash up of a lot of different opinions from multiple people. I read articles before I made it, then finalized it in my own words.

I have one guilty wish to all ye animators and artists. Please do more x YNs. I’m kinda tired of seeing post apocalypse headcanons lol sorry. I also live for the New York aesthetic and the bright lighting and colors.

I know this positive review is short, but I am writing this at a restaurant currently and don’t feel like looking up articles with opinions on ROTTMNT. That was a lot of research I did.

Once more- i truly love Rise and I hope you understand that the slam was just exactly that. A slam. Despite that, I truly want to know your thoughts on upcoming content: should I do a movie review for rise? Want some headcanons? How about art? And because I’m currently vibing with four followers, I’ll take in free self/OC inserts and draw you with your favorite turtle or April! As well as headcanons. I’ll also take in ideas for a one shot book, Quotev quiz, fan fiction, and a possible animatic.

Can you please advice me on how you draw poses?

oh god this is going to be difficult because i consider myself Bad at this but I will try!

so im one of those people who honestly cannot draw anything without a reference pic, so step one is get a reference. it really depends on what you’re drawing, whether it’s full body, half body, dynamic pose, etc, but always try to find a reference!

after that I’ll usually do a quick sketch, not getting detailed at all just to make sure the spacing/sizing is correct. this is esp important if there are multiple different people/poses being drawn in the same pic. so like

just general shapes. shapes are SO IMPORTANT to me. because we’re focusing on poses specifically, i’d say try and note weight distribution and angles. these are all fairly simple poses but they also carry a lot of weight, especially jimin’s. his hips are tilted towards his left and the way his opposite foot is pointed tells us the majority of his weight is balanced on his left. it seems like a small detail but a lot of the character of his pose is based on that. jhope’s body is curved towards jimin in a slope while jimin’s body is much more angled and sharp. these are all important things to try and capture in the loose sketch. like i said the sketch shouldn’t be detailed but to really capture the pose you want to try and grab onto the things that make it special

after that i make a second sketch layer, and depending on how im feeling or how much im like the drawing i either keep going or end here. still, the second sketch layer is where i add all the details.

fix the foot placing, fix the forward/behind issues, focus on specific limb placement. in this particular case i might have even added a third sketch layer, but probably i would have just worked with this layer to clean it up, taking advantage of the lasso and transform tools to shift things. im not overly happy with jimin’s pose here but I do want to note that the clothing wrinkles add to the pose as well. they follow the direction of his body and makes it easier for the eyes to see it and think “oh, a good pose”.

oftentimes, i combine step 1 and 2, and simply clean and add to my first sketch layer until im satisfied with it, but i honestly would suggest mapping it out first and then going over it with more detail on a second layer. i get lazy. dont be like me.

and then obviously adding colors and effects and stuff

in general im pretty bad at coming up with poses myself without ref images, so i cant really offer advice there, but its definitely something im trying to work! practice makes better so i just gotta practice

it’s been a while perth! i’ve been pretty tired recently and i’m trying to let go of the unhealthy coping mechanism kpop is to me but i wanted to say hi hello and how are u etc <33 i’m also facing a kind of artist’s block because i want to be able to draw more complex things like backgrounds but i don’t want to practice or use references so it never turns out how i want it 😞. it’s okay tho.. improving is a gradual process! plus i’ve been looking at ur newer art and it really is improveddd you have a better handle of digital art techniques and your poses and expressions are good!! we will become stronger artists together i decree it! love the new url btw… what else… oh omg i loved the rcpc comeback! i wanted to listen to the songs u recced me but i Cannot find the ask with the recs so i’ll just listen to a bunch of their stuff. that’s it! have a good day for me! -tt

i just realised i lost the sketches i did of another friend's oc bc it was on the same layer as the lineart & when i covered up the sketches with the background colour i did it on the same layer as the lineart *forced smile* whatever anyway... yeah like clearly this isn't bad NDSKJNFKSJDHF i just had mental illness in my brain. i may need to change one of the teeth's position but like that's fine... in any case yeah i was just having a Moment but i do hope we will become so much stronger together!!!!!!!

i'm an almost complete beginner artist and although i've learnt the steps partially from watching youtube videos once i've drawn the basics i tend to get stuck (and or lost) and give up but my question is how did you first learn to draw full figures? and do you have any advice for realistic drawing? traditional drawing as opposed to digital, i think if i start with tradition it may help improve digitally if any of this makes sense, thanks in advance!

Oh man drawing full figures is still a challenge for me even now ;-; I used to only draw busts because that was the only thing I was confident in but then I extended to the waist because there was a period of time where I got really into drawing torsos for some reason haha. Even though I still don’t particularly like drawing a full body, I would 1000000/10 recommend using refs to practice since it just makes everything easier having a visual aid to guide your drawing :)As for advice for realistic drawing - refs! Honestly I cannot stress how useful refs are, if you’re going for realism it’s always better to use a ref than drawing from pure imagination! As a biomed student I own a couple of anatomy textbooks and I was given an anatomy book specifically for artists for my birthday from a couple of friends a while ago so I use those sometimes for reference :D If you don’t own/can’t find anatomy books don’t worry, google is always there and is good if you’re looking for a specific pose. If you’re just wanting to get familiar with the human body and how it works though, I’d totally recommend having a look at some anatomy books for artists! The same thing applies for drawing specific people, look for photos of their face and use them as a guide while you’re drawing so that you don’t stray too far away from what they look like :)I started with traditional too! I reckon it’s always better to have a solid grasp of traditional before transitioning to digital, since you can always use the two together as well (e.g doing a traditional sketch, taking a photo and then finishing it digitally) I reckon adjusting to digital drawing is easier if you’re all good with traditional drawing beforehand. The biggest way to improve your art (spoken from experience) is honestly just to draw as often as possible! It doesn’t have to be an amazing piece, it could just be doodles while you’re bored but I found that keeping the momentum going is what really helped me to improve a lot over the past few years! Though keep in mind not to push yourself too much, it’s good to keep going with the flow but if you hit a wall and art isn’t coming out like you want it to, don’t force yourself! It will only end up making you more frustrated. Take a step back and remind yourself that it’s ok to go at your own pace~
