Activity Within a San Jose Party Hub on a Costa Rican Friday Night.

One must enter a spontaneous and impulsive mindset if interested in understanding the habits of a Costa Rican partygoer. Fully submitting to the experience is crucial, especially regarding new experiences. In this case, I was lounging in my home, sedated by inactivity in previous hours. This was disrupted by a call from a close friend of mine. She was in the neighborhood, and invited me to spend a night on the town with her. Naturally I told her to say no more, I’d be with her shortly.

First was beer, always beer. It’s important to lubricate the minds thought processing capability by diluting the consciousness. To be an impartial observer, alcohol is a great help. One liter in, the idea of making the trek about one kilometer west to “La Cali” came about. Neither one of us had any opinion on the matter, although a subliminal curiosity was present. Without much thought at all, we began walking in that direction.

La Cali is a street lined with loud bars and clubs of assorted themes. There’s something for a wide range of socialites. Reggae, Rock, Hip Hop, ect. Any mainstream entertainment seeker would find themselves right at home. For a person like me, a place like this is intolerable without first dissolving any concept of sobriety. 

Such a place, on such a night, attracts large flocks of traditional members of the mass mentality. Immediately after penetrating the anesthetized crowd countless red faces and glazed over eyes inspect you from head to toe, silently evaluating the random individual who has just entered their vicinity. Clouds of low-grade marijuana smoke came from unknown sources. They mingled with clouds of tobacco smoke coming from less clandestine regions. These predominant smells were joined by those of vomit, beer, sweat, and a hint of sewage. The few of those who did not have some sort of psychoactive substance in their system were feeding off the turbulent energy of the environment. This scene was scored by the unsettling loudness consequent to all of the locales’ sound systems operating at maximum capacity. 

The one kilometer walk to this strange place had made us dangerously sober and the smell of ditch weed triggered a craving. Our funds were severely limited, so the low-grade cannabis would have to do. We spent the next 20 minutes or so infiltrating the congregation from multiple angles. Periodically asking suspected stoners for some weed please. We asked multiple watchymans (Costa Rican term given to men who watch parked cars) and each time we were told “Wait right here while I go visit the doctor.” Often they would come back empty handed.

The lack of luck in comparison to the abundance of odor was mildly frustrating. If we were crack users we would be in a much different situation. Every time we would stand on a certain corner to assess potential marijuana users, we would witness countless crackheads coming and going contently. Each time saying hello to what seemed like old friends, handing them a bundle of coins and leaving with a couple loose pebbles of crack in their palms. I figured this out by asking a particularly shabby looking individual who had just exchanged a suspicious hand shake with a redheaded woman on a street corner. I asked, “Just out of pure curiosity, whatcha got there?” He proudly opened his hand and presented to me a small crack rock. “Crack! Hey, you want some? What do you need? I’ll get it for ya!” I kindly declined the offer.

This interaction raised suspicion in the dealer, who was now looking over at us frequently. She was surrounded by men within the next few minutes, all notably interested in our presence. We decided the area, although highly populated, was potentially dangerous and relocated. 

After we left we met a lively individual by the name of Ivo. He was selling lollipops for a living. This did not trouble him however, he was an extremely joyous man. We asked him for some weed please and he said he would go visit the doctor at once. To make sure we wouldn’t leave this business opportunity he left us his jar of lollipops as a certain binding contract. After a few minutes, he returned with a small twisted piece of plastic that contained what resembled a brownish-green pebble that weighed no more than a quarter of a gram. It also contained a balled up rolling paper. He charged us 2,500 colones for said brownish-green pebble. We refused and negotiated the price down to 1,025 colones. 

Now completely sober, we fled to the near by Parque Francia. We sat at a picnic table and I produced the twisted plastic containing the brownish-green pebble and rolling paper. I inspected the surface of the pebble closely, looking for any sort of unwelcome powders or particles. I deemed it OK to smoke and broke the pebble into minuscule crumbs. I rolled the pebble crumbs into a joint, and requested a light from a nearby couple. After introducing flame to flower, I smoked it viciously. My friend took much more modest drags. 

I hadn’t smoked in weeks, and the alcohol had expanded my blood vessels. There was no doubt in my mind that it was coming. The experience. The high achieved by ditch weed is very rough around the edges, negative side effects are often expected. While the effects where gradually overcoming me, I decided it would be best to do something pleasant as soon as possible to keep my mind off of these overwhelming side effects. I had remembered a large Datura plant in the vicinity of the park, and the signature sweet, aromatic smell that they release in the night to attract nocturnal pollinators. In this case the plant attracted a severely uncomfortable drug user. 

When we got to the tree, it had no flowers. I realized the dry season was upon us. As I looked up to the branches in disbelief, somewhere down the road a man began screaming. Threatening to kill something or someone. He was in a vehicle and his piercing screams amplified by the second as he seemingly accelerated towards us. We ran. The responsible man and his vehicle passed through a nearby intersection at fantastic velocity, and as the distance between him and us increased his voice faded. 

The panic did not fade. We continued running back to the park. By the time we got there I was completely overwhelmed. My heartbeat was pounding through my eardrums and I felt as if I was about to collapse. Beads of sweat ran down my forehead and beliefs of unreal dangers and threats bombarded my mind. My friend was not affected as severely as I was. We sat on a curb for several minutes while my debilitating mental state came and went in a series of waves, each diminishing in intensity. 

The effects subsided completely after about 30 minutes, and we walked home where it was warm and safe and abundant in delicious food. There was no more talk of the night that had just occurred. All we knew was that it was a great success in every strange and uncomfortable and sadistic way.

The Rambling Man Travel Review: Reno, Nevada

Reno, Nevada…  The Biggest Little City in the world, located mere miles from scenic Lake Tahoe.  Reno, known for so many things.  Yes, gambling is probably the first thing that creeps into your head as you begin the initial descent into Reno / Tahoe International Airport on the East end of Reno.  But, Reno is so much more!!  And, to be clear, because in an odd way I get this question more often than not.  “No, Reno is not any where near Las Vegas!” Frankly, Sin City is a 6 plus hour car trip away.  And, yes, the two Old West towns have some things in common, but the truth is they have more uncommon than you would expect.  This is the Silver State, Ramblin with the Rambling Man, checking out the dudeability, the hang outs, the good time, hidden gems….  Rambling, walking, eating, drinking, fishing, hunting, sporting…   Rambling into town, and taking in the town for all its worth.  From local sporting events, to grabbing a cold beer, or strolling a midnight street in search of every dream inside my soul.

If you want to double down on 11 in a game of black jack, sure…  You can take lady luck for a twirl at most locations in Nevada.  Heck, you can gamble in the grocery store! I woke up a bit foggy… I think I got home around 3:30 AM, an UBER brought me from Mustang back to my downtown Reno hotel room at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino.  I was nude, my clothes from last night thrown over the chair adjacent to my bed, I could still smell the stench of Mustang and Crown Royal bellowing from my garments. What a night…  I need some coffee and to walk some of the haze from behind my eyes.  I take a quick walk upon exiting the casino doors at the Eldorado, moving South down Virginia St.  I then take a right turn on First St.  

I arrive at Hub Coffee Roasters on Riverside Dr in Reno.  I sit outside, a round table with an extra chair my only company.  I sip a tall black coffee and pick at my cheese Danish. My view is of the Truckee River and the adjacent walking trail and park.  The trees scream early fall as I sit still listening to the peace of the morning.  

On foot one can embrace a new city on a much more intimate level.  You can walk almost in slow motion as you take in the new sights, smells, and people.  My walk today has a walking path that winds around the Truckee River directly West towards the Keystone Ave Bridge, the Booth St. Bridge, and Idlewild Park.  The orange, yellow leaves under my feet, as cool mountain air surrounds me.  I hear chirps from a few birds, and the 10:00 AM train and its screech and horn.  The water from the river heads East, against my walk.  It is a most perfect morning, and I am stoned immaculate in my city by the big lake in the Sierras.  You can almost smell that the snow of Winter is near, I walk.  My head phones in both ears, music plays, song after song.  I hear my playlist, my shuffle playlist. The many songs from Apple I-Tunes subscription.  

Three miles is a decent introduction walk to Reno, as I start my daily stroll from Hub Coffee Roasters by directly heading west on the adjacent walking trail…  I walk with the morning sun on my back, music keeping me company.  Beck, REM, Pearl Jam, Band of Horses, Elliot Smith, Mount Eerie, Bob Dylan….  The Truckee River from the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountain range brings fresh and clear water from the tops of elevated peaks seen in the distance, the river keeps me company as I ramble on.  It is a most perfect walk, a mix of solitude, water, fall, and some strange faces.  My own music allows me to not skip a beat.  

I have a personal tour of a local Cannabis Dispensary at 4 PM.  And dinner with an old friend, Clint Cates.   Yes, above and beyond gambling and prostitution, Nevada has recently legalized cannabis.  Yep, you can literally go pick up a sack at a local retail weed dealer.  What a country?  And they deliver…  

The inner workings of a cannabis dispensary, a bit underwhelming.  It is all about security in a cash only business… And, the chronic has some street value, no doubt.  So, bullet proof sheet rock, big safes with secret codes and levels of management. Not to mention, a big wall of people. I thought “Starbucks but weed” after 15 minutes into my tour because the Mynt Dispensary in Downtown Reno.  The place was packed, all sorts of sour faces and young people alike looking at such a variety of products.  Heck, when I was a kid, getting a sack of weed was a crap shoot. You would get a plastic sandwich bag with something green inside, and you would pay the man the cash.  Today, its sativa or Indica.  It’s oils, wax, vape pens, and don’t get me started on the names.  Pot can’t just be pot anymore.  Marketing has invaded the space, so pot now is Orange Krusk Kush, or Spiral to Insanity. Regardless, Reno has it all, and the Mynt Dispensary is close and will satisfy one’s curiosity on what is recreational legalization.  Check it out….  

Mr. Cates urged me to see the Grow Facility, the actual place the pot is grown.  And, talk about impressive…  To see such a green forest of pot inside the facility was one most unique experience.  What a country?  And, Nevada, Northern Nevada.  This place is lit, no pun intended.  

And, when you are stoned? Besides taking a walk and being outdoors, I enjoy food, duh…  I think that is the pothead mantra, let’s get high and eat are faces off.  For Clint’s chronic hospitality, and world class tour of the Mynt Dispensary facilities, I offered to buy the pot entrepreneur dinner.

Clint, he suggests a local staple, but a Cougar Stop first.  

We walk into The Polo Lounge with glazed eyes and an unquenchable thirst.  We pull up to seats at the bar, we were Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in a pair of cowboy boots galloping into this local dive bar. And, we were looking for a cold drink.  

The Polo Lounge located in Midtown Reno is a retro and freaky dive bar with strange faces everywhere. The bar, however, is first and foremost a place to drink in a town of drinkers.  Did I mention?  Reno can drink.  I am feeling a Vodka and Tonic with a lemon night is on the horizon.  I am in the land of milk and honey, as this dive bar is also a Cougar den.  Hot, horny, older women.  And like fine wine, and vodka to my tongue, an older woman is truly as sexy as a woman can possible be.  Especially, if the music is loud, the drinks are cheap, and last call is just a rumor. That’s right, you can drink all day and all night in the Biggest Little City.  No last call!!  What a country bro!!!

Clint stumbles back from a food run, we lost most of the night in a haze of laughter, pick up lines, and bar games.  We even missed the food reservation.  Clint finds a solution!  He brings back some food from Miguel’s Mexican Cantina, a short walk away from The Polo Lounge.  I am mouth first into an onion and cheese enchilada and a chili relleno in the most elegant egg crepe as 2 AM reared its ugly head.  I order a cold beer to wash it down, The Polo Lounge happily accommodates our request to bring in outside food.  Dive bar, check.  Great company and laughter, check.  Great Mexican food, check!!  The Rambling Man thinks highly in regards to the drinkability and Eatability in the Biggest little City…

I sleep until high noon. The partly cloudy fall day brings a day to catch up.  I have one more night in Reno, what will the last day of my weekend getaway bring.  I hope more laughter, and more food.  

What will today bring, a Sunday afternoon and night in Reno.  I stick to my vacation theme, let’s walk, drink, eat, and find some laughter.

I start my last night with a Sunset Walk at nearby Virginia Lake.  The manmade lake is exactly one mile around, it is a big oval walking / running path near the intersection of Virginia St. and Plumb Lane in Reno.  It is a most beautiful walk and sunset.  I start my walk, set for 3 laps, at approximately 5:45 PM, sunset set for 6:20 PM, and the sky was set ablaze with all of autumn’s glory.  The lake is full of aquatic life, ducks, geese, turtles, fish.  With the best feature of Virginia Lake, a forest of sage brush. As dusk approaches, the smell from the sage brush is worth a billion silver dollars.  The smell of sun fading from summer, the old west meeting the fresh air of ancient mountain shadow.  Air so still, my heart beats in rhythm with the season.  

After the walk, I go to the nearby Atlantis Casino….  The Atlantis, less than a quarter mile from Virginia Lake, is where I will partake in the Steam Room with Eucalyptus spray and a world class massage.  I feel like I am made of rubber, I feel happy.  So, I make my way down to the sportsbook within the bowels of the Atlantis casino.  I grab a beer and a nearby handicapping sheet, I am going to bet on the NFL Sunday night game of the Week, it’s the Patriots vs the Chiefs.  What a game!!  I put $500 on Tom Brady, the old man from Nor Cal, to win the game by more than two points.  

At halftime, I stagger over to the Purple Parrot restaurant within the Atlantis to get my all time favorite sandwich, The Monty Cristo.  This fried sandwich with a side of strawberry preserves is not something I eat, nor even have the option of ordering.  The Monty Cristo with a side of fries, I sit at my table, lost in the casino carpet, and flashy neon lights, my eyes fixed upon the next numbers in the never ending run of Keno games on the overhead TV.  In my head, I keep wishing for eight numbers to match, a dream of wealth and fame surely awaits if I can only just get 8 numbers correct.  

The night fades into the swallows of tomorrow, I make my way back to downtown and the Eldorado.  My flight leaves tomorrow at 10:15 AM….

Hue of the TV radiates upon my tired and sleepy head, a weekend in Reno.  I spark my lighter, weed set aglow, I inhale.  Stoned immaculate, I am the Rambling Man.  Reno ENVY… Reno, Nevada…  Walkability Score:  9 out of 10,  Drinkability Score:  7 out of 10, Eatability Score:  7 out of 10, Overall Value:  8 of 10, The Ability of the City to Provide a Unique Experience:  10 of 10.

Or course, my weekend getaway is meant to start a conversation regarding travel.  Reno has so much more to offer, like most cities, it would take multiple trips to take it all in.  I, do however, list below some activities or events to consider when traveling to Reno.  

1.       Fish for Brown or Rainbow Trout in the Truckee River. Entrance Point at Mayberry Park west of town make this easy to access.  Artificial flies, a Salmon Egg, or even a piece of Bacon on the end of the stick will find success at dawn or twilight.  

2.       Check out a University of Nevada Football game at nearby Mackey Stadium in the Fall, a Nevada Basketball game in the Winter, or a Reno Aces Minor League Baseball game in the Spring or Summer.  Hey, we love our sports, and checking out a new venue is always cool.  

3.       Walking Options: Mayberry Park, Downtown Reno, Virginia Lake, Rancho San Rafael

4.       Harrah’s Auto Museum – This is a legit place, full of classic cars that will blow your mind.

5.       Rib Cookoff, Balloon Races, Hot August Nights, all tourists traps but a place to start a weekend to Ramble On…..  

Finally, and in closing, what is the soul of the city, what is the Soul of Reno?  Reno has two faces, and contradiction surrounds.  The beauty of Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, alongside the despair of prostitution and gaming.  The city is the chain of vice, and the elegance of a perfect small town.  It is the old west, yet modern day growth and opportunity abounds.  It’s the Wild, Wild West, it’s the Biggest Little City in the World.  Regardless, Reno is a fantastic place to Ramble On.

Typical Battles with RAS

        Morning of July 3, 2020. Friday.

        Dream #: 19,555-03. Reading time (optimized): 2 min.

        This dream is typical pre-liminal modulation (which I informally call wall mediation with preconscious personification) as the common imaginary intruder scenario. My identity is present to a point, but the setting is erroneously the Stadcor Street house (which has the wrong layout in my dream to prevent associating it with waking life).

        My dream follows my usual modulatory RAS processes but is bloodier and longer than usual. The main scenario involves an unwelcome visit from Zsuzsanna's friend Tash (whom I have never seen in waking life) from Nimbin and at least two of her unfamiliar male friends. I am with Zsuzsanna in the kitchen in the first segment. (The personification of preconscious cerebral "intrusion" and the RAS mechanism is simply the result of wanting to sleep longer but ultimately stems from natural threat assessment whether or not there is a real threat. I do not see strangers or intruders as such in a deeper level of REM sleep, even when they enter our home without explanation, as there is not as much liminal modulation.)

        When Zsuzsanna and I walk into the lounge room, I see Tash and two unknown men standing behind the sheer curtain that otherwise covers the door. The imagery is ambiguous (and impossible) at this point. I call out with annoyance that they are in our lounge room. Additionally, the door is in the wrong location (as a part of the west wall rather than the south). Another erroneous implication is that the front of our house is at ground level (with no high stairs).

        At one point, there is a transition where Tash is outside the front door. I see her through the screen, and Zsuzsanna and I talk. We do not want to let her in. I think she is on drugs. With annoyance, she mentions something about cannabis and having hash. I absentmindedly say "cocaine" and keep the door closed, also thinking she might have taken some illicit pills.

        Somehow, the door is open later (somatosensory anticipation), and two of Tash's male friends each have a switchblade. They come near me, where I am standing near the kitchen doorway. I grab them and make them stab each other. I pick them up, carry them through the lounge room, and drop them on the (fictitious) sidewalk outside so that one is on top of the other. There is an extensive trail of blood to the front door, but I mentally erase it. I consider the police will think they killed each other and will not suspect any other possibility.

        Later, I go into the kitchen and hear a lot of noise, including doors slamming and people yelling. Eventually, I see the same two men alive again and climbing through the (fictitious) jalousie window, between the louvers (which, of course, is ridiculous and impossible, but my dream somehow compensates for them entering the kitchen in this way).

        I wake while strangling each one in each hand, but they are now only a few inches tall. Their heads become ratlike.

On the road in Jamaica: Blue mountain coffee, Reggae and Bob Marley - travel

On a dull and overcast day in San Francisco, my friend Ron informs me that he has decided to spend the upcoming holidays with his family in Jamaica and asks if I would like to come along. After months of unremittingly grey weather, I do not need much persuasion to head for sunnier climes. A week later, we are on a flight to Kingston.Ron’s sister, Estelle, is waiting for us when we walk out of Manley airport, after an eight-hour-long flight. We settle into the backseat of her 4-by-4 and set off on a two-lane highway running parallel to the sparkling azure waters of the Caribbean. With 2.8 million people, Jamaica is the third-most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. Kingston, the capital, is located on the south-eastern coast of the island. It has two major sections: ‘downtown’ and ‘uptown,’ also referred to as ‘New Kingston’. Ron’s parents reside in a comfortable villa in the affluent part of town. He has three siblings: a brother and two sisters including Estelle. They are a Mullato family, and like many Jamaicans have white, black, Indian and Chinese blood coursing through their veins, making for a striking combination. The following morning, after a sumptuous breakfast, we set off on a trip to the Blue Mountains, Jamaica’s longest mountain range, to visit a friend of Ron’s who runs a coffee plantation in the region. The area is known for the famous Blue Mountain Coffee, which commands premium prices on world markets. About thirty minutes later, we leave the flats and start chugging up into the hills. The road is scooped out of the rock as if by hand. It seems barely wide enough for one vehicle, let alone two passing from opposite ways. We drive around numerous hairpin turns and are constantly bouncing on potholes. Just when it seems like the road couldn’t get any worse, it turns to dirt. Finally, after two hours of driving, we arrive at the plantation.

B07MJ9NPS5Daniel is a grizzled, serene-looking Rastafarian dressed in loose white clothing, with a beard and long dreadlocks collected under a white turban. He greets us with hugs. “Holy Emmanuel I Selassie I Jah I Rastafari. Welcome to my humble abode” he says with a beaming smile. We climb the steps of the porch and seat ourselves on a long bench running along the verandah. The large two-story wooden home is painted in white and brown and has a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the mist-shrouded peaks and deep valleys encircling it. A tall white woman with blonde dreadlocks comes out with a tray bearing fresh fruit and steaming mugs of coffee. She introduces herself as Gretchen, Daniel’s wife. Three children ranging from ages four to ten are trailing her. I look around and can’t help but notice dozens of tall marijuana plants growing wild all around the house. Then it strikes me. We are smack in the middle of a cannabis plantation. Daniel notices my gaze and explains that he grows both coffee and cannabis on this piece of land. He cultivates coffee for export while the cannabis is strictly for personal use. As night descends on the mountain, he builds a bonfire on a grassy knoll behind the house. We huddle around as he lights a clay pipe.

A cannabis farm in Jamaica. Daniel belongs to the ‘Bobo Ashanti’ sect of Rastafarianism, one of the more orthodox lineages within the larger movement. Bobos take their name from the Asante tribe in Africa, the original source of the majority of slaves in Jamaica. Several well-known Bobo Reggae artists have passed through Daniel’s home including Sizzla Kalonji, Capleton, Anthony B and Ras Shiloh. The next day arrives bright and clear, and after a meal of watermelon and pineapple, we bid our hosts adieu. Estelle is in the driver’s seat as usual. We head towards Trench Town. Trench Town was notorious for political gang violence during the seventies, forcing Marley to leave after an assassination attempt. Sadly, not much has changed since then. Today it is carved up into different zones, each one controlled by a leader or ‘don’. Political parties created the gangs in the 1970s to rustle upvotes. The gangs have since turned to drug trafficking, but each remains closely tied to a political party. The hostility between these rival gangs and ensuing urban warfare has turned the area into one of the most dangerous places in the world. 0805080864, 0007255535We stop in front of an unassuming restaurant with ‘Jerk Chicken’, ‘Oxtail Soup’ and ‘Red Stripe Beer’ printed on the wall in large red letters. A group of kids are kicking around a soccer ball on the street. It’s nearly lunchtime and we have decided to stop for food. We order beers and two portions of each dish with salads on the side. Jerk chicken is the de facto national dish of Jamaica; aromatic and smoky, sweet but insistently hot. All of its traditional ingredients grow in the island’s lush green interior: fresh ginger, thyme and scallions; Scotch bonnet peppers, cayenne peppers, black pepper, onion, garlic, nutmeg, paprika and cinnamon. After lunch, we walk around the neighbourhood, strolling past hard-faced youths lounging in front of shacks boarded up with planks of wood. Boundary walls covered with elaborate street art proclaiming the glories of Bob Marley and Rasta culture mark the periphery. Clothes are hung up to dry on rickety poles joined by a plastic string. Dogs sniff around piles of smouldering garbage.

A white couple, clearly American, wearing brightly coloured Hawaiian shirts, stand in front of a statue of Bob Marley, having their picture taken by a local. They are grinning idiotically with hands upraised in a victory sign. We walk back to the jeep wordlessly. Bob Marley’s voice blares out of the speakers as we drive towards the beach. Fittingly, the song is Trenchtown Rock, penned in the early seventies while he was living in the ghetto with his mother.In the Third World, especially where liberation struggles were underway, Bob was seen as both a popular musician and a revolutionary ally. When Zimbabwe won its freedom from the white Rhodesian regime in 1980, the Wailers played at the independence celebration. Nesta, as he is affectionately known to his legions of fans, succumbed to a malignant strain of cancer while at the peak of his career and passed away at the age of 36 on May 11, 1981. It is nearing sunset when we arrive at the beach. We sit on the white sand at the water’s edge and gaze at the setting sun, a perfect orb on the pink horizon shot through with streaks of gold and scarlet. Let me start off by saying; if you’re not ready to try it, don’t do it.

Part of the experience is to be completely at ease and go into it with an open, positive mindset.

I can’t stress it enough that it can change your perception in the matter of hours— and if we’re being honest: it has been years since I’ve had it.

This was also the first time I had a joint in over a year. Everything leading up to the trip was completely dry from anything and the clarity I obtained whilst clean was undoubtedly the best I’ve felt in a long time..

But you’re probably wondering how it went...

I took one, my friend took three— mainly because he didn’t believe it was real, in-fact the first half hour after he had his first two, he kept telling me he didn’t feel anything, i warned him that it would creep-up on him and it would only be a matter of two hours before he’d peak.

Mind you, we’re going through Daylight Savings Time, so time itself was going really slow, I guess he got impatient and took another one.

I took mine with a swig of orange juice around 9:35pm and within minutes I started to feel a bit of a glowing sensation. Like a small spike in my awareness of what was going on— no introspective thoughts but aware that if I took two, I would not be going to work the next day (I had work at 11am the following morning) and I told him that it would be a strong sensation that would come up gradually. Believe it or not minutes after I had taken my first and only tab of the night, I took two small puffs of a joint and got baked instantly, it was somewhat overwhelming because it was as if the synapses and receptors in my brain usually occupied with fueling my medication (Lamictal 100mg, Invega 3mg and Vyvanse 50mg) was now slowing down and now combined with an unknown amount of THC, I felt stoned but at the same time kind of sore, naturally one should take into account that cannabis is a depressant and the combination of two mood-stabilizers (antipsychotic) and a stimulant with a hallucinogen is bound to make anyone feel kinda sluggish especially if they haven’t done anything like this in a really long time. It was only 9:45pm when we were talking, my voice sounding like I was balancing a coin in my mouth, but he was on the phone most of the first half-hour so we weren’t talking directly to one another but an occasional snide-joke was to be expected from him because he’s facetious as hell.

By 11pm, I could tell he was peaking— he was smiling and laughing, we were giggling because our voices were ridiculous sounding with his dissolving on his tongue. The thing that might’ve thrown him off thinking it was bunk was because sometimes in rare cases, you’ll get the kind that doesn’t have that distinct chemical taste that makes up the compound. For a first-time, you’re going to have to expect the unexpected.

My friend had turned on blue Christmas lights on in his room, which gave everything a bit of a sharpened outline, if you stared at something too long and closed your eyes you’d see the imprint of it on your eyelids and that’s how I know I was already gone. Not only did I see the imprint of these objects but at the same time I was also feeling like Jello, my body loosened from its tenseness it felt a half hour before but my heart was pumping quicker, I couldn’t really lay still and I wanted to cuddle something or someone because it made my tactile senses feel incredible; his bed felt like a cloud since it was memory-foam and I started to sprawl out and close my eyes to enjoy the closed-eye visuals which had a kaleidoscope-effect now. I grabbed one of his pillows and held it at arms length and tried to wrap one of my legs over it, it legitimately felt like I was cuddling another person because my breathing felt like someone else was in my embrace.

By 11:35pm, he turned off the blue-light and turned off all-lights in the room which amplified his trip tenfold; he tried to get up off the recliner he lounged in but couldn’t— just like me he felt very Jello-like and was both comfortable and taken by surprise by how it hit him like a ton-of-bricks. At this time I grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around me because he had his window-open and the cold breeze was coming into the room or maybe it was just my hypothalamus unsure of what temperature I was feeling because I went from cold to warm to cold to hot. I decided this was the opportune moment to play some trippy music, I picked Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective— which is PERFECT to play when you’re on any kind of trip, I had the volume on my phone set to two-clicks above silence, which normally wouldn’t be that loud (I mainly did this as to not stir my friend’s step-dad and to be respectful) but even two-clicks made the music sound like an amphitheater and really time-stretched it, a few minutes into one song felt and sounded like an eternity where you could truly appreciate the amount of work that went into making their album as mindblowing— as I laid on his bed, my brain disassembled some of the synthesizers and other sounds that made the song and could feel their unique distortion. I wanted to listen to the entire album but after a while with how time stretched it was, I had to turn it off because it only intensified and became almost too mellow.

We sat in silence for a while, maybe like another hour or so. I had brought my PlayStation 4 over his house and asked if we could play it, because I have never tried playing a video-game whilst tripping (I still haven’t) but he said no because he made it pretty clear to me he didn’t want to be staring at a screen all-night which partially made sense as it would’ve consumed a lot of time and the blue and white-light would keep us awake longer than we needed to be which would’ve ultimately made us completely sleepless— he just wanted to relax and so he asked if he could lay down on his bed, I let him lay down and I’d sit in the recliner he sat on for the past three hours and he sighed of relief when he got onto his bed, I tried to get comfortable on the recliner but it was difficult; to go from a really tranquil bed to sitting upright was by no means producing the same blissful effects as laying down flat.

I tried to get relaxed but it wasn’t easy, I laid my head on the pillow he gave me but as you can imagine, reclined on one of those chairs plus resting your head on a pillow on one of the arms of it is quite awkward and trying to find a way to curl-up isn’t pleasant either but this didn’t give me a bad-trip, I’ve never had a bad-trip.

Eventually I found my comfortable position and took a few hours nap while my brain basically started thinking about my life— what I’ve accomplished before all of this, a year of sobriety which now had to reset, but I somehow felt okay with that— to take a year break from cannabis and LSD didn’t seem to bother me, my brain thought of this trip and toke as a reward but I also thought about how some of my friend’s I’ve known for years are now doing alright for themselves and not doing this kind of thing which kind of made me feel sad and hopeless, I wanted nothing more than to have my own space where I could be cuddling and making love to someone passionately and slowly, bonding over the hallucinogen as you should— yes this is one of those things where it’s setting and individuals that factor into how much fun you’re going to have and how relaxed you’ll feel, if you’re tripping with someone you genuinely love and appreciate romantically, those feelings will be cranked to the max-level they can be; but sadly I’ve never experienced that either— and I really want to but it’s not easy at all to find it and you may or may not get opposition.

The next morning, literally around 8am, I had literally what felt like two hours of sleep— but I didn’t, I had six hours— I felt extremely deflated and sluggish as all hell; virtually no uplifting energy as I had the night before and even before I embarked on my trip. I had work at 11am, so I started packing my belongings and drove home— which surprisingly had no negative effects on my driving, if anything I was driving the posted speed-limits and didn’t make any mistakes, that alone kind of made me feel accomplished that I somehow managed to pull that off despite being lethargic and foggy-headed.

When I got home, I took my morning medication, took a shower and hoped for the best— that I’d go to work feeling fine and go about my day as normal as possible— but it didn’t go nearly as well as one would hope, because on-top of feeling the comedown and afterglow of the substances, my mind kept racing about things that were going sort-of awry in my life, I thought by doing what I did last night made me a failure in my family’s eyes— it’s bad enough that I had to hide behind the guise of a strong anti-smoke scent spray so I would come home and go to work inconspicuous but I couldn’t shake these thoughts and when I did finally get to work (earlier than scheduled) I got there at 10:15am, I decided I’d relax in my car for a while and try to meditate these racing thoughts into more composed ones, but I still felt scattered and drained of any kind of rational thinking.

I work at a bowling-alley which for the most part is pretty quiet until leagues or open-bowlers occupy the lanes we rent out. Around the time I clocked in, I paced around some to see if there was anything that needed to be done, we had a children’s party being held in an hour or so which occupied four lanes; while I was looking to see if there was anything I could do I still can safely admit, I was underperforming, nowhere near my seemingly manic energy that I had the week prior; my manager must’ve had some idea something was-up so she set me up with a challenge— to rearrange all of the balls on the floor in size-order, which is really counterproductive because no matter how you’d organize it, anybody who does open-bowl will almost never put them back where you organized them. I was with another coworker when my manager made us do this which required a lot of exertion and moving back and fourth between lanes and memorization, something my brain could not quite compute because I’m being told several different ways to organize them and we have so many different weights that it felt futile but I still tried my hardest, while this was all going on, the first league started coming in on the low-side of our building which began slowly increasing my anxiety so I stopped and began doing another task— degreasing any glass we had (usually the pictures we have hung-up around the center and the arcade machines and windows) but even then I’m told by my coworker that it isn’t necessary to do that: “We do that once a month” yet I do it mostly every shift I’m scheduled just so I can occupy any idle time I have because I know part of my job is to not stand-around and you have to be constantly moving...

Then the party came in, holy hell, this is where the center went from slow to now becoming gradually packed with patrons so I was stuck just doing tedious things like “mopping” the approach which is basically spraying alcohol on the wood approach and moving a rag attached to a stick to-and-fro, I tried doing so but I couldn’t quite grasp that either, my anxiety was getting in the way of doing anything right and it really began to become obvious something wasn’t right and I felt like my manager knew that— she offered lunch to me but I politely declined, something I wonder now if it would’ve had any effect on how I felt, she didn’t really have much to say— I think it might’ve made her upset to be honest.

After that I went into each of the rooms we have mats where my coworker suggested we power-wash them which was a much easier task and didn’t require nearly as much effort as you’d think— but still the center itself was packed with people and even when I finished doing that task I couldn’t quite figure out what to do next, so I waited some, took the garbage out, set-up some ramps and sat down to take a breather— it was only 1pm and 5pm felt like eons away— as soon as I stood up my manager startled me because she was right behind me, she claimed to have radioed me “5 times.” But the radio she gave me had a busted antenna and only gave me static, I explained this to her and again she had nothing to say, so I also explained that I was feeling anxious and overwhelmed about what truthfully has been troubling me— my father, which is partially true, he had gotten seriously injured by burning his hands on November 2nd and hadn’t told anyone, I brought him to the hospital on my birthday and he isn’t really doing too well mentally. Presently, he’s in a rehabilitation clinic recouping but I can see that he’s making small progress, this alone was a lingering thought all throughout the day.

My manager told me to clock-out and go home— “Maybe I’ll take you off the schedule for a few weeks..” she threatened, which would’ve been terrible given the fact that I have just started working here fairly recently and the last thing I’d want is to go without any income for a while.

So, all of that aside— today I feel somewhat more level-headed then I did yesterday and I’m hoping I can perform better at work today, I had two cups of coffee and I feel like a 7/10, which is waaaayy better than I did yesterday, I mean literally yesterday I felt like a 2/10.

My advice to anyone— if you’re going to do anything like this, make sure you don’t have work the following day.
